I've seen in another video, a mention to raja strop (if I remember the spelling) this is a dense wool cloth nailed on balsa and put in a storage box. I've made one and this is for me at least a game changer.

Flat on the stone. Definitely not free-hand. Hope this helps

He's pulling, but not straight back, he's also moving it toward the spine, if that makes sense.
It’s a V pattern where he is leading with the spine of the razor.
