  • This is a detailed process of styling a big Japanese white pine (Pinus parviflora) for the first time. The tree needs 2 years to set and produce dense pads. Thank you for your time!

    What a specimen! It's so refreshing to see a traditionally styled tree not having its branches destroyed for the sake of making deadwood.
    Another fantastic production. Possibly my favourite Arkefthos tree yet!

      Thank you Simon! Probably my favorite tree yet, as well. As you said, I'm trying to use every branch in the design, trying to avoid Jin in pines. Best regards!

    I love all the Pinus parviflora cultivars. I'm collecting seed again this fall on 'Aoi' and they take 1 to 2 years to germinate.

      I agree John! I have about 20 seedlings from "Negishi". Unfortunately, out of the 30 cultivars I grow here in the garden, only Negishi is mature enough to bare female cones. Cheers!

    I have a Pinus Rheinhaus, is it a White Pine tree also?, it looks thr same. Great video thank you for sharing.

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Elizabeth! "Rheinhaus" is a cultivar of Pinus strobus, from the USA. While it is a five-needle pine like Pinus parviflora, there are some big differences. Longer needles, more heat and humidity tolerant. It could be a convincing bonsai, if needed.

      Really exciting decision. This time of the season, just fertilize and watch it grow. Nothing more you should do. First week of June, that's when you can make pruning decision and cut up to 40% of the foliage (if you need to). Just water for the rest of the summer. Late October, is wiring time. After that you are going to have a basic structure and you can call your tree a prebonsai. Details on every procedure are all over TH-cam. I wish you luck!

    Is it possible with the white pine's close relative, the Korean pine (pinus Koraiensis)? The thing is, it's cones contain nuts and my children were given some as a Christmas gift. I planted one as an experiment and now it has sprouted. So I am wondering what to do with it now.

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very much possible! All the pine species are good material for bonsai, especially the 5 needle ones like parviflora, koraiensis, pumila, cembra, peuce, strobus, flexilis, reflex a, longaeva, aristata and some Chinese. Now it is too soon to do anything. Depending on the growth, probably first wiring will be necessary in autumn of it's 3rd year. Now good, fast draining substrate and water. Organic fertilizer in autumn, late September. Cheers!

      @@ArkefthosBonsai Thanks for the advice! Is it a good idea to water pine bonsai with aquarium water instead of normal watering and fertilising?

    • @ArkefthosBonsai
      @ArkefthosBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it depends. In aquarium water there chemicals that regulate the pH and I don't know the influence of every mix. But I know that even if it is OK, the fertilizing effect will be kinda week. For developed and old trees that will be fine, but for young trees still in development, you are going to need something stronger, to save some time. Definatly can be used as a healthy supplemental to organic fertilizing.

      @@ArkefthosBonsai Can aquarium water cause imbalance of nutrients? For example, excess of nitrogen and lack of potassium? Leading to, maybe, long needles that then brown quickly? I don't know, I am just guessing.
