Ok. I wanna correct you on something.
Yukino never wanted to run for president for herself. She was trying to run for president so that she can solve the problem in her own way and show Hachiman that things can be solved without him self sacrificing or using under handed methods.
And when Yukino said" here I thought that you would understand"
She thought that hachiman at least unlike Yui believed that their relationship won't be as shallow such that it would break apart if Yukino were to run for SCP. But, Hachiman was shallow enough to think that the club would be gone if Yukino became president. And Hachiman later comes to realization about this when shiromeguri senpai said that "it would have been great if Yukinoshita were to become SCP and that she(shiromeguri)would come to talk with them. And in her idealization, all three of them were there. Meaning that if Yukino were to become the president of SC, Hachiman and Yui could join student council as members. Only the room would have been changed. Not the relationship between them
But instead of protecting the relationship between three of them, hachiman (and yui) chose to protect that room
Now, Yukino realized that maybe her friends don't value or think that their relationship is as strong as she thinks.
This really hurts Yukino. She came to the realization that only she was stupid among the three of them to think that their relationship wasn't as shallow.
She loses all of her confidence after this and pretty much becomes soulless for the next few episodes.
And when she saw that Hachiman is overworking himself because of the club's situation. She tells him to take some time off the club.
But instead Hachiman not only comes to the club the next day but also says that"he want something genuine"(implying that he wants a stronger relationship).
Yukino had always been abandoned by her friends and bullied in her childhood. But it was the first time when someone was ready to cross a line with her . She becomes overwhelmed by her emotions and runs away from there.
(Which is mentioned in her character song, "with these new found overflowing emotions, I ran away")

I think there’s something very touching about this scene, something that I felt resonated with me personally.
Hachiman is a hardcore pessimist. He looks at things and picks them apart to find the ugliness in them, and he closes himself off from others because he gave up trying to follow the crowd that ostracized him, deciding that going against logic and following his feelings would only lead to more mockery, shame and problems. Because of this, he abandons the idea of complete trust in others, always searching for an ulterior motive in every interaction and action he observes, and decides that there is no worth in trying to appeal to anybody, so he acts only with logic, trying to reach benefits in any situation without the fear of losing his dignity because as far as he’s concerned, it doesn’t matter to anybody, not even himself.
In any situation, he realizes that pain is only an inevitable evil, and the quickest and simplest solution often involves sacrifice. And if it will be so, it should and will only apply to him and him alone because by that logic, nobody gets hurt except the one whose pain will hurt nobody. Thus, things can carry on for everyone as they know it, because he doesn’t apply to the equation once it ends. But even then, despite his ideas making logical sense, despite him saying he can have no consequence because he is a loner, he fails to see that he isn’t the only one hurting, because for quite possibly the first real instance aside from his own sister (and Totsuka, but he’s an entirely different anomaly in of himself), he has friends who don’t want to see him get hurt, something he has denied in his mind for so long.
In addition, he realizes by this point that his logic can only take him so far. He misinterprets the situation during student council runnings and manages to preserve the club, but fails to realize Yukino’s true intentions for running and the consequences she suffers in the aftermath since he projects his image of a “strong girl” onto Yukino, leading him to underestimate her true depths and drive a wedge between the club. This also is because Hachiman is so fixated on saving the club, he never once considers that the bond he has with Yui and Yukino won’t simply fade away with the room itself, partially because he himself never really considered it as a true relationship beyond being in the same club. He believes that this superficial excuse is all that allows him to even associate with the two of them, but that isn’t even remotely true, because he refuses to accept that his time spent with them both changed the formula. For the first time, what he sees as the logical decision is the less favorable for him, and he pays for it. In his method to save the club, all he ends up doing is threathening its union.
That being said, I love this scene because it finally shows our stoic, aloof and pessimistic loner finally letting go of his cold rationality and dark outlook. Even for just a moment, his voice cracks, his eyes tear up, and even if his mind tells him what he asks for is impossible, even if it defies everything he tells himself, Hachiman speaks from his heart, reaching out to two friends to help him, quite possibly the first time we’ve ever seen him openly ask someone else to help him with his personal problems.
For the first time since becoming a loner, Hachiman is tearing down the walls and exposing his vulnerability, allowing himself to place genuine, unconditional trust in another person to do the same to him, offering his back to them, hoping for a warm hand instead of a cold knife.
He finally admits his helplessness, asking his friends to help him lift the burden off his shoulders and to find something genuine together. They won’t just take the easy way out and stick with the status quo, instead resolving to struggle and suffer through any obstacle and consequence to achieve something that can truly last, something truly unconditional. No more compromises, no more bargains, no more excuses, no more strings attached. Nothing but trust and understanding in each other.

    • @supernalverse1050
      @supernalverse1050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

water exactly! That’s what I got from it too! I don’t think Hachiman doesn’t care about people’s feelings he just perceives that he has no value and gives into pessimism in general, in order to shield his own vulnerability but he’s slowly realizing that in taking that too far, there are imperfections in that line of thinking as well.

    • @waltercallearana8552
      @waltercallearana8552 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Excelent analysis. I kind of take Hachiman's pessimistic logic to the realm of Schopenhauer views on pessimism. Mainly because Schopenhauer says that happiness isn't a truly achievable mental state, it's just a tiny spec in a continuum of sadness. And to truly live and get by is to be stoic, not wanting anything in a strong demeanour so as to not getting hurt.

This is one of my favorite videos from you and on the platform in general. You've been a great help in my attempt at understanding this series, so has your comment section. I know Oregairu has a rather small cult following today than it once did, but I think that's because more people didn't watch your analyses of it. It's a show so easy to dismiss if you look at like superficially, but it's moments like these that make even the average viewer feel like this show is genuinely trying to say something, pun intended. I finished the series long ago, understanding some parts and not others. But I've never been able to get this show out of my mind. I'm on a rewatch now, and I will probably touch on the novels soon. Honestly, with a voice as good as yours, I'd even listen to you reading the novel out by yourselr lol, but what I mean is that I hope you think of diving back into the series sometime soon. Take care

I have something to say about the end scene of the second season, but this may not come out as accurate as it could be because it is years ago since when I've last saw the series. In the part where Yukino is about to give her chocolate to Hachiman, it is prevented by Yui indirectly (or intently?), twice. First is outside the school(?) and the other is at the aquarium. Yui knows that Yukino is making an effort to open up to someone, more so from the opposite sex, with the chocolate symbolizing her feelings but before she could do so at the end. Yui gone on rambling about how she wanted the three of them to maintain their relationship together in the future, thus preventing Yukino's 'confession'. However, this notion was rejected by Hachiman, something something genuine.
I'm very unreliable here but trust me, it's the subtlety that to me, made this scene caught me off guard and also what made me despise Yui a little.
Feel free to correct me or something, I just wanna discuss this lingering impression of mine for the past years or so. I may not be right, but thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I didn't see it as if Yui had a bad intention, but what I got from the scene was that while he rejected Yui's ideal, it seemed like a subtle way the author found to say Yui is out of the race to hachiman. (But now that u say that, the bad intention thing seems pretty reasonable)

For example: Text= The weather is nice today.

I may add that we will never get to completly understand another person, becouse of three reasons:
    1. we can't get the exatly the same expirience of beeing someone else, we can describe it but words are not experiences.
    2. People is alwais changing, learning new things, as in school and in life, geting better, geting worse. I feel myself realy diferent since i was a child, but yet i feel that something remains the same.
    3. The more we learn about someone the more we find things we don't like about them.
That's why it may be painfull, to try to know someone. To actually know them! But that is the exact same reason why we can be with the same person all life and not get tired, (some people do get bored but whatever) there is alwais something new to learn about someone else.

I'm amazed at how many different interpretations are spawned by the Fandom, but still remain under the same umbrella opinion of "this anime/manga/LN is fucking great".
Normally in these kinds of situations you see toxicity, but for some reason when a piece of media gains "cult classic" status, which I deem Oregairu to fall under, it seems immune to infighting. Intellectual debates and differences in interpretation sure, but not toxicity.

*This channel is so underrated,* and I don't say that very often, especially considering I've seen this expression countless of times throughout the entire web-- but regarding anime, I really just need to have to say, myself, that it's just really apparent how much quality this channel offers and how much value they take from anime itself. Though, one thing that is definitely not up to me, but especially the community as a whole, is that I guess these types of analysis or thorough-to-brief breakdowns of anime videos or content especially specializing in text/subtext particularly, are not the most renowned form that recognition takes extensively, that's why only a handful of people even get to consider looking into these sorts of things, which just goes to show how differently various and multitudes of watchers out there individually see anime.
But if it IS one thing I do have a take on... I think the form that content-bringing such as this takes is RATHER important and really compelling to a VAST extent, that *I sternly believe they should at the very most be recognized more by the community or moreover outside the culture as well,* for better or for worse.

another sub context is the two 'making friend' scene at the beginning and the ending of season one where Hachiman asked if he could become friend with Yukino and got rejected twice. first time he was rejected because yukino know the guilt of the car accident would not go away, and make friend at this point would just be a superfacial connection. the second time Yukino rejected the invitation to become friends but her body language showed that she opened herself up a lot more, and that she has begun to "know" Hachiman. they had come a long way to get where they are, made peace about the car accident and Yukino's lying part, and Yukino thought that the group's relation would move on to become something 'genuine' rather than 3 people making superficial friends because they were related to one car accident.
and then in the second season, when Yukino witnessed Hachiman's self-sacrifice way of solving problems, she wasnt just mad about Hachiman hurting himself and the loner way of doing things, but the fact that Hachiman chose to support a superficial group dynamic.

  • @Arthetraveler
    @Arthetraveler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My basic brain always played that misunderstanding as the fact that yukino has feelings for hachiman but doesn't know how to process that and yui is aware but isn't sure how to move forward. It would make sense since in the end of season 2 it's clear there's something to be said and saying it/confronting it would change the dynamic of their friendship. idk.
I never connected it to her real desire to be president since I pushed it aside as her conflict with following in her sisters footsteps and only doing so because it was the easy way out.
idk if I wholeheartedly agree with that being the foundation this scene was trying to portray but then again it might be a double wammy

I have to say that I truly appreciate this anime, never has a show, book, movie or other types of content made such and impact on myself as oregairu, and the best part was that I never really understood the reason, was it because I related to Hachiman, or did I yearn for these type of events in my life, but after watching this, I can conclude that it was really simple, I wanted to "understand", he said right there, no subtext, he just spat it out. It truly amazes me how everytime I reflect on content made about this anime or the show itself, it makes me sad, or want to cry, but it is at this times that I really feel "human". Sorry for the long post, just felt that after watching this marvellous video, I had to let it out. Keep up with the great content, congratulations on a fantastic piece of work!

I don’t think Hachiman doesn’t care about people’s emotions it’s that he thinks he has no value in anyone’s eyes. I think due to being cast off by his contemporaries and heartless rejections that didn’t ever recognize him as a person of value. That’s why he goes at great lengths at preserving other people’s feelings at the expense of himself or social image. Which leads to Hiratsuka-sensei and Yui trying to get him to realize that he does have people that care about him and by self sacrificing all the time he’s not sparing everybody because the ones that care for him(that he doesn’t fully realize) are the ones getting hurt.

Ever since the 1st Episodes and just watching the subtext, its quite obvious the dynamic of all the relationships. Yui never had a chance to begin with, just like in the club room, shes ALWAYS between Haichman and Yukinon, implying that shes the only reason they havent showed their true feelings for each other. Its amazing anime because not all MCs should try to be the hero!

HUGE props to @Lady Bug, btw.
This is copy and pasted from the same reply I sent over to @Lady Bug's original comment, to anyone wondering.
    *The "Genuine" Scene*
I: Problem/conflict arises after some normal storyboarding for quite some time
II: It just so happens that, and Yukino thinks, it would be best if she'd take matters to her own hands
III: Hachiman, while taking the subtext of this as Yukino really wanting to be Student Council President for herself, agrees with Yui, who, though earnest, just believed that this would mean the end of their club, where both individually thought it would be best for Yui to be president herself so that Yukino doesn't have to, because that way, the room would live on, especially because Yui thinks she'd at least be able to handle and retain the normalcy even with her being eventually and rather busy, while Hachiman, in clear Hikki fashion, would just go on to take matters to his own hands, succeeded in making Iroha as president, and leaving Yui and Yukino out of the picture, which if we already know by now, subsequently leads to Hachiman avoiding getting hurt by any means from any outcome otherwise.
IV: Yukino thought Hachiman at least, unlike Yui who just plainly put everything into text, would respect Yukino's promise that her being president wouldn't mean the club was going to die out. Since Hachiman's nature is clearly evident, his attitude and behavior, and dare I say expertise, in utilizing subtext to rather selfishly achieve his desires and wishes, was too much for Yukino to handle.
V: Yukino then came to the conclusion that if that was enough for them, to think in such a way and to especially take unnecessary action just to think there's a need for retaining the club's status quo otherwise, especially when Yui and Hachiman thought that Yukino being president would mean the end of their club, then what they've had this whole time wasn't anywhere genuine to begin with -- at least nothing as deep as anyone'd thought their relationships were. Yukino also "came to the realization that only she was stupid among the three of them to think that their relationship wasn't as shallow" at surface level. This took a toll on Yukino, and would leave her "soulless" for a couple episodes. // It's really compelling if you think about it. Rather deep and emotional if I had to say so myself.... //
VI: Yukino would seem like nothing mattered anymore between the three of them, or atleast only, but especially, towards Hachiman. If Hachiman was just regularly attending the club for the sake of preserving the status quo, then it would only be the best for Yukino to give *the* word and have Hachiman not obligate himself anymore further.
    *HOWEVER*
VII: AS YUKINO WAS BREAKING DOWN; AS SHE HAS ALREADY GIVEN UP ON RETAINING A CLEAR OUTLOOK ON WHAT SHE THOUGHT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS OUGHT TO BE.... *Hachiman would then go on and proceed to do her in a way that she,* who HAS been and who ONLY knows about being easily and generally ostracized from peers in the past, *had never seen, witnessed for herself, or experienced before:* Someone was willing to abide all the parallels and was prepared to "cross" the line with her -- to build something genuine, together, especially by someone who had recently realized as well that they were longing for the same thing, *Hachiman himself.*
VIII: Yukino is overwhelmed, for better or for worse; but
We all know what happened to the rest of the season anyways. And now we're left with a solid resolve done inexplicably by none other than the show itself. // I may not be one to say this myself, *but talk about good fucking writing, man....* //

I've been re-watching Oregairu as season 3 approaches and felt that revisiting this video with a fresher memory of the series was a good idea. Oregairu compliments the viewers ability to digest subtext more-so than any other anime I've watched. I often find it difficult to understand why others don't view the series as highly as I do, but I think that may stem from not appreciating these aspects or being frustrated that perhaps the show didn't fulfill the promise presented by its genre . I have a few friends that felt the show worsened as it went on, and that's okay, but I love how the series has progressed and am excited for season 3. Still on of my favorite videos you've made.

Man, you nailed it, specially at the part when you say that Hachiman is at his lowest, to me this is my favorite part of the series (referring to the light novel, since the anime cut what was in Hachiman's mind) it's such a powerful scene, to see Hachiman who hated the superficial now started to search for it in order to maintain his "everyday", and when he is confronted his mind just got blank, he didn't know what to do, he got hit in his weakpoint.

To bridge this video and the last, "do visuals matter?", here's another way they matter: I picked up on none of the subtext of this show, at least correctly, because of the visuals. Trying to appreciate the beautiful art and interpret the fairly fast paced, nuanced dialogue I was lost to what was really going on and I am someone well versed in metaphors, symbolism and subtext. I could tell there was stuff going on that I wasn't seeing but my eyes were so busy I ultimately was just watching to see what kind of train wreck hachiman was going to solve the problem with

I find myself saying genuine a lot more since I watched this anime, though I honestly desire that very feeling because to me society is superficial and I can't find myself wanting to be a part of something that isn't... well, genuine.
I'm a realist for seeing the world as it is, but a idealist because I know what it could be.
After all, how can one not come to this conclusion when you, yourself is scarified from the very group of people you though were friends by one person ( a single individual) claiming lies, turning the people you once called friends into nothing more lies themselves. Truly the individual is meaningless unless said person stands on top of the group itself... so, to me the group mentality is disgusting. I'd rather be alone than conform to such a idiotic concept.

I've written an analisys about the meaning of Growing up, maturity, and this anime. Yours is way more complete, although I feel the topic that I was studying still deserves attention. I think part of the problem with Hatchiman is that he doesn't have the willingness to fight for something he wants. Now that we saw the confession scene it is more obvious that he doesn't value himself.
Most of the others relations can be defined as people struggling to find their place in society beyond the school and the strategies they are using to cope with the stress.

Since the characters in Oregairu have taken a step beyond texts and subtexts, I can't help to wonder how the third season of the show is going to play out. Since I haven't read Wataru Watari's light novel, I'm pretty much blind on this. Will the show finally take a step forward in it's "Romantic Comedy" and stray away from it's initial direction? Will the characters find genuity? Can't wait to find out in a couple of days..

I remember you had a video of the Confession Scene of the series S3 Ep 11 where did it go? Putting that aside, I just want to say it took me a while to figure this part out but after reading an article about the Service Club from a google doc somewhere a bit and then overly thinking about this series even to now since Oregairu has been one of the few anime I have watched wholeheartedly but I think it's time after avoiding it for a while to personally break down this Genuine Scene thing with some of my personal opinions on everything with quotes from characters in the show itself.
This whole thing after the Kyoto trip where Hachiman faked that confession to Ebina and was right away rejected without a second thought. Though it did took care of the main issue where Ebina wishes for things to not change amongst the group as it was clued in by Hayama and Yumiko. Hayato certainly hated seeing him do that but so did Yukino and Yui who was watching. Hiratsuka-sensei warned Hikigaya before that although he is used to getting hurt there are people around him whose hearts would break seeing it. This was exactly what happened, though Yui and Yukino have heard of it, seeing first hand how Hachiman turns himself to a human punching bag to solve problems broke their hearts heavily, they hated seeing Hachiman belittle himself in such a way.
After coming back from the trip, they were tasked with something big by Ishiki Iroha who apparently signed up to be the next SCP unwillingly. Yukino automatically went against Hachiman's plan for a bad speech because that would mean once again getting ridiculed by people around him. Later, while Hikigaya was hanging out with Hayama who was hanging out with two girls from Kaihin one being Orimoto Sayori whom was the one who ghosted Hikigaya during middle school. While it was supposed to be an outing, Hayama in actuality set this up to berate Orimoto while also Hikigaya for his "martyr" approach to solving problems and actually value himself more. All this went on while Yui and Yukino were watching which he invited. After that conversation and being ragged on by Haruno who was there, Yukino opted to solve the problem by being a candidate for the SCP which was not well received by Yui who then decided to run for SCP as well because she believes there would be no Service Club without her. In my personal opinion, I agree with Yukino's plan although it doesn't have to be her but a worthy competitor. However, before her plan could even take shape Hachiman wound up stopping everything by underhandedly making Ishiki the SCP in is attempt to protect the Club. Yui was happy but Yukino walked off later saying to Hachiman "And here I thought you of all people would understand me" which gave Hachiman a thought he might have done something wrong. It was only later where Shiromeguri-snepai mentions how it would be nice if Yukino did become the SCP where she fantasizes that Yui would be the VP and Hachiman would be in charge of General Affairs. All three of them on the same room like how it was, nothing would have really changed, it was after realizing that where Hachiman realizes he messed up, in his attempt to protect the club he failed to understand what Yukino was trying to do. Whether or not Yukino really intended on becoming the SCP, it can't be denied that she most certainly had a plan if she was elected. She had a plan and thought ahead. Personally as a joke I made once is that Yui fits better as the Secretary all jokes and obvious reference considered.
From this, Yukino end up getting the message that Yui and Hachiman thought they aren't close enough friends to understand each other and that they wished for things to remain the same. Since then they all tried to get things back to normal but the air around them was stale. Yui tries hard to keep the mood up but it was obvious they had things they wanted to say but were afraid of things changing.
Things only got worse when Ishiki now SCP comes in for help with a Christmas community event which Hikigaya decides to help Ishiki with on his own as a personal favor. When watching I noticed how Hachiman looks at Yukino beforehand and it was clear he could not face her directly with the mistake he made. At least that was my take on it correct me if I'm wrong but it also doesn't help that he told Yui of what he was doing and not her meaning he had Yui help him keep the fact he was helping Iroha from Yukino. When Yukino found out what Hachiman was doing she tells him to not come into the club room if he doesn't want to and says "If this much distance could separate us then our relationship isn't that strong to begin with. Am I wrong?" I don't remember the exact words but that she leaves saying "Don't force yourself to come to the club anymore". Hachiman has no clue what to do until Hiratsuka-sensei happens to drive by where they then talk about the issue with the Christmas event and how the Presidents Tamenawa (tongue twister names not my forte) and Ishiki were afraid of stepping up to lead. At this part best teacher Hiratsuka-sensei talks to him about human emotions and how "you cannot avoid hurting people. You will hurt someone merely by existing whether you know it or not." Hachiman decided to handle this whole thing by himself and not involve Yukino and Yui because doesn't want them involved with something he caused to begin with but they don't know that it's because he cares about them that he goes this far. Sensei then tells him the ulterior purpose of the Service Club. Yukino and Shizuka set up this thing because that former felt guilty for indirectly robbing him of the first year meet and greet but sensei also decided on the club for Yukino to "come out of her shell" as in to eventually allow people into her life. Being isolated from her friends and people around her in the early years due to envy and jealousy lead to her ice queen persona. In a big way it's similar to Hikigaya's narcissistic persona due to having been ghosted and losing faith in the concept of youth. That was sensei's wish for Hachiman for him and Yui to be able to do that for her now and not later and leaves wishing the three of them a bright future. Later that night Hachiman thinks about what he needs to do. He knows what Yukino will say to him but he had to try at least.
The next day much to Yukino's surprise, Hachiman comes back to the club room on the very next day and requests her's and Yui's aid with the Christmas event fiasco that he admits his fault in causing. Yukino says what Hachiman expected and was about to leave but Yui stops him admitting they were at fault too for letting him handle everything. Yui then calls Yukino unfair which causes things to get a bit heated between her and Yukino for keeping a facade. Hachiman defuses things by saying of his inability to see things at face value where Yui tells him "people won't get it unless you say it" which Hachiman agrees with and admits it's difficult to do that before he says something he kept in the abyss for a long time. The inner monologue I think is a huge deal, there was something he wanted for a long time but only realized now, it's very out of reach but he wants to understand people around him while also being understood himself. it's very difficult to ask for something like that but he wants to know what people are thinking so at least he would have a peace of mind. He says to Yui and Yukino with everything he has "I want.....something genuine". Meaning he wishes to change the relationship between the three of them, he wants to make amends for straining it. Those words shocked Yui and Yukino in which the latter runs out of the room.
Yukino doesn't know how to feel about what Hachiman just said about "something genuine". No one has ever tried to approach her before like this nor did anyone want to go beyond mere acquaintances. But here was someone in front of her who was certain to be incapable of changing confesses to her that he wants to change their relationship for the better no matter how painful or weird it gets. She bursts in tears as she hugs Yui and then after calming down a bit wholeheartedly accepts Hachiman's request for aid with the Christmas event but also to one day achieve something genuine. Hachiman unknowingly while wanting to mend things between Yukino and Yui has opened the way to allow people into his life as well.
Personal thoughts: If I'm gonna have to admit, a lot of people think Hachiman during S1 and S2 was cool and him second half of S2 and S3 was bland. I do not think that, rather I was the opposite in terms of what I thought about Hachiman until this part. This part of the series was when I finally started to warm up to Hachiman because I certainly did not like how he before has solved some of the more personal problems like the one with Sagami where I was like "ok we get it, get to the point already". Though Hachiman and I actually think alike when it comes to life and people, even I was disgusted with how he handled problems people had up till this point. The reason why I started to warm up to him at this point, is because he was starting to realize the fault of the way he does things and is willing to be a better person not just for the people around him but for himself as well. So from this point forward I started to like Hikigaya more and S3 shows how much he really cares. Looking at Hachiman is like looking at a mirror, not only do I almost look like him but it's frightening how him and I actually think in similar ways. I am practically Hachiman if he hadn't met people like Yukino and Yui and I'm now an adult who has no pretense on life.
Maybe I didn't have to summarize everything but this was my take on the whole thing.

Oregairu is so subliminal that it’s unholy. Like the whole show you need to be able to interrupt the things that happen on your own, and they’ll never say it upfront in the anime. This is the first time I’ve seen it to this level in an anime, it’s a masterpiece.
