In my experience it's harder to come across a fake than the genuine article, but I've seen huge differances in quality even with the genuine teapot. I have one beauty that has one cartouche on the bottom, one on the handle, and two inside the lid. The lid fits so perfectly too that it completly seals the top and stops the pour when you have your finger on the button. I also have a very cheap one - still genuine purple clay - but you can tell by the ill fitted lid that its a low quality moulded one, and the single cartouche on the bottom is almost unreadable. Look for what I mentioned above and also the price. Pay cheap and you get a cheap pot.

I have the green cut-glaze teapot with flower/leaf motif that you show at 0:20. Are you describing that as an authentic Yixing teapot or a fake? Please and thank you!!

when you say ' a non-authentic Yixing teapot will have droplets of water running down its side when you use water to wash it out" what do you mean? Are you saying that water from the inside will seep out? Or that an authentic pot will absorbs the water? Can you please elaborate.

Its been a while since you asked, but I believe they are talking about the beading of water on the surface of the pot. One of the signs of real zisha yixing clay is the general lack of beading on the surface if you wash the pot.
To test this, hold the new pot completely under water for a few seconds, and then lift it up without shaking it. If the teapot seems waxy or water proof, becomes dry almost instantly, or the water all beads off quickly, this may be a sign of fake or low quality clay.
A legitimate or high quality yixing pot will instead have at least some of the water stick to it like a film, and be slower to dry off.
However, like all tests, this one is not 100% accurate. Older teapots especially can develop a enamel like coating from years of tea brewing, and often will repel water in a similar way to fakes. I've also seen some very expensive (>$1000) teapots behave in a near waterproof way, even though I personally know the sellers were using high quality clay from well-known artists.
Its more of a general principal, to be used along with the smell, touch, and look tests, for a quick way of eliminating low quality and fake teapots on the fly.

I'm looking for an authentic Yixing tea pot set and wish that you could tell from on line otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to have to buy one and then find out that it is not real purple clay after purchasing it.

+oolongdragon1 I recently visited your website, surprisingly when I clicked on a link the website oolongdragon.com asked me for my computer administrator name and password - that is surprised and it was on an unsecure server. I did not give out this information but would like t inquire why your website asks for such details?
