In the past 3,000 years, many populations have evolved genetic adaptations to their local environments. People in Siberia and the high arctic are uniquely adapted to survive extreme cold. The Bajau people can dive 70 meters and stay underwater for almost 15 minutes. So what are other recent changes? And will our technological innovations impact our evolution? Laurence Hurst investigates.

Something I recently learned about our evolution reason we need wisdom teeth taken out is due to the changes in our jaws. Since we have been eating softer foods our jaws have been shrinking which hasn't left the room for the wisdom teeth to grow in. This is due to not needing the teeth. The shrinking of our jaws have allowed more room for our brains to develop further.
That didn't take millions of years to happen, it due to micronutrients deficiencies. Look up Eric Berg , and others on U Tube?

A common misconception some of us have is that evolution is always progressive and gets advanced by every stage which is simply not true, we just evolve into a different form not always more advanced
More better possible
So is 'de-evolution' a form of evolution then?
Annie Hills nope, I meant to imply that evolution is synonymous with the progressiveness or development which is not always the case, you can’t say devolve but can’t prove how effective some methods are of modern times in relation to older ones if you get what I am saying
@@anniehills5919 De-evolution really isn't t thing. It's just evolving in a different way.
@@anniehills5919 There's no such thing as de-evolution. Losing parts or certain characteristics is also a part of evolution. Some species lose certain parts of their body when they no longer serve a meaningful purpose for the organism or if the environment changed. There are also some that lose parts and on the later generations, regain them back.
Throughout my life, I noticed a subtle and rapid change. I was born in 1956 and at the time, babies were born with eyes closed and it took a few days to open them. Our daughters, today in their twenties, were born looking around for everything!
I heard that this was already common, but my grandmother would be frightened. And it has occurred very fast, just a few decades.
As always, excellent content and wonderful animation. Congratulations and very grateful!
interesting!
Yes truly interesting.
This is false. What is true though is that back in the day doctors used to put certain chemicals in babies eyes to kill of bacteria and infections, causing the baby to have sensitive eyes. That could've caused them to close. But human babies eyes do not have fused eyelids (like dogs e.g) after birth that they need to remain closed for days. “It's a newly evolved butterfly spreading it's wings wide.”
Omae wa mo shinde iru
What I would like to know is, how are motor skills developed with appendages during the process of evolution? Things like wings evolved slowly, were the connections already somehow present within the brain of the animal during that process? Is the brain hardwired for potential appendages?
The initial wing-like appendages were only there to either assist animals in leaping higher or gliding down from trees.
@@khylaldana2757 the question would remain, at what point did the appendage and the brain connect?
@@khylaldana2757 and also, using an appendage to glide and flapping a wing are very different in terms of motor control. Did the brain already have that ability and the wing caught up to it, or was the wing difficult to control until the brain caught up with it?
Impossible to prove wings were "evolved" tho. Basing knowledge on theory aint gonna lead to the most accurate conclusions.
@@simplyengineering2350 I just used wings as an example. You can really use any part of the body. Your fingers are very precise, and don’t need conscious thought to function. Did that connection to the brain start with the digits, or the brain?

Sadly, we are selecting for stupidity these days. What goes up, must come down.
There is one person who talks about theory of the race horse but don't understand the genetic.
I believe we have slowed down our own evolution tremendously.
We have designed our lives to be as unproblematic as possible,
From the tv remote through to drone delivered pizza,
We are systematically taking the struggle out of life and replacing it with convenience and thus stalling our natural progress.
I think with everything there is balance and the further we make strides technologically,
The more we reduce our natural progression.
But the less we have to think about little things like that, it leaves us room/time/luxury to think about bigger things
Soon we will take the ultimate evolutionary leap when we effectively combine the power of technology with ourselves. Might not be in our lifetime, but I feel it's inevitable.
Also, genetic engineering
probably one of the more complex things not mentioned is the more complex part about genes in reproduction. I don't remember all of it but most multi cellular vertebrates have a very restrictive system for gene selection through the reproductive cycle and the RNA process of protein production. this results in a very strict set of possible mutations, this is still extreme but not as a extreme as invertebrates, who often have genes that allow RNA editing.
The way things are going, i’d say most humans are devolving.
@Erika5 What if Neanderthals are the extinct geniuses?
There's no struggle for survival.
We aren't acquiring any new Gene's.
The human race is most definitely not evolving anymore.
Well that might be true for first world countries as natural selection has almost dissapeared
@Erika5 yes I think we'll all be in two categories,,,in the prior stage stage of evolution it was "the stronger by body survived" but as in now it'll be "the stronger by brain will survive."
Agreed. Survival of the fittest doesn't necessarily exist anymore in most first world countries anyway
Humans are having devolution and machines are having evolution!
What?
What even is devolution?

Inb4 "Humans are devolving"
A species does not go back in time, however it can certainly evolve into something "worse" by our standards.
(Evolution was never about getting smarter or stronger.)
Well, evolution was about strenght and intelligence in the sense that these are helpful for a better spreading of genes
I believe technical progress will slow significantly our adaptation to our environment.
We were evolving by natural selection and from now by artificial selection. And we will question which we consider the fundamental now.
"Beak of the Finch" - evolution occurs much faster than we can imagine, when environment dictates it.
2:40 I think this can be used in the debates about whether or not milk is healthy because not any one human is the same so if you came from a lineage of milk drinkers it could be healthier for you in comparison to people whos ancestors didnt adapt to be milk drinkers.
