I mean, to be fair, you see some of the stuff Luffy's had to face on his journey, and you would have to basically put yourself at death's door every day. Garp was making sure he could at least handle anything in the East Blue
Well not sure that garp really want him to be a marine.... If he wants to be a pirate... Luffy might need to experience the dangers of all environment... It's like garp trains koby... He did not throw him to any dangers like luffy experience... Koby might die 😂😂😂😂... Pretty sure when he connered gold Roger he would have some rum and conversation with him of how hard to be a pirate... He has to face enemies, hardship, betrayal and so forth...
So when garp knows luffy really wants to be a pirate then he got no choice to let him experience what it's like to be a pirate and start when he's just alone

I love how Garp is just old-man Luffy but in Marines. I don't hate the live action, but they failed to capture Garp's charisma. There, Garp looks just like an abusive grandfather, a villain.

@@SCOOBYGD the difference is not whether or not he is or he isnt. What was lost, as I said, was the charisma of the "Old-man Luffy". What was left was the abusive grandfather. If anything, there was also a tinge of Akainu's self righteousness in there.
That is what Garp is in the show because he has to be. In the anime, at this moment, he goes after Luffy on a essentially a whim, never actually seriously trying to stop him while he was already a pirate.
The show’s Garp on the other hand, very clearly wants to stop Luffy from continuing as a pirate because he knows what happens to them (executed like Roger). In this scenario, hes trying to save his grandson who he thinks is too weak for the grand line.
In the anime, Luffy just escaped Enies Lobby, so all the heavy handed protective parenting doesnt exist because Luffy has already proven himself strong. Garp is sure that Luffy is strong enough to pave his own way, so he doesnt need to show tough love (or i guess toughER love)
Once you get to luffy actually standing up for himself is when the la garp shows love also keep in mind they are showing him super early in the LA so they had to show him with some authority
