    I actually like the old screwdrivers better with wooden handles. This one came out great. Thumbs up to your man Mark for keeping up the good fight. That is a real man.

The lathe machine and I think the work marks close to the manufacturer name make more personality to the screw driver because is. A part of his history, the paint looks awesome!!! Good job friend!!!

    Out in my backyard I have a shed that we use to store a lawnmower, snowblower, various gardening tools. In addition I have a couple of old beat up rusty screwdrivers that I basically don't care about, and have suffered years of abuse. Well they are exactly the same kind of screwdrivers you have been restoring. Now I realize they deserve a better fate. So I'll bring them in and fix em up as best as I can. Only problem is I don't now have any beat up rusty screwdrivers in the shed when I need one. I guess I better get to Harbor Freight four a replacement!!!!!!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jim! You are so right! I have a bunch of Harbor Freight screwdrivers that I will bang on, pry with and use as scrapers!!!!! I also have some older Stanley 100's that are too hard to restore I will use for dirty work like clearing plumbing fixtures and sewer blockage... However it's nice to be able to bring these older American icons back to their original beauty! =) Good call Jim!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!

    You said you are not a fan of wooden handles on tools but before the 1970's and plastics, wood is all we had. More comfortable than plain metal. That screw driver brings back memories and turned out very nice indeed. Most screwdrivers of that era were wood working ones with pear shaped handles, that one is an engineers one with the tang going to the end so that you can hit it with a mallet. The large pear shaped screwdrivers were expensive but you got a lot of torque on them.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tony! As a collector I like the wood handles but anytime there is wood coupled with metal the wood always gets banged up or damaged... I prefer materials that are composite and aren't effected by moisture or humidity. If you look at all the vintage tools from years back the wood is always the problem, cracked, dented, dinged, split, worn... When I restore them I keep them separate so they don't get damaged. They still use Wood screwdrivers in the aerospace and aviation industry! The wood handles are good against transmitting heat! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    As to thwther it was worth the time and effort on this screwdriver - most certainly. Its a piece of Americana, if it could talk, I am sure would tell some amazing stories - plus the education we all get by your channel has turned it into an amazing object lesson that likely will inspire other such tools to have the same done to them. As always - great job! Checking out Wire Works now.

    The stain on that handle is absolutly beautiful. Im im love with wood handle tools. My tool bag i use at work everyday has Felo woodhandle screw driver set and some old mosc wood handle screwdrivers. Use em everyday. Now the Felo drivers are new manufactured tools, but they are a beachnut wood i believe. Made in Germany, very nice tools

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Kevin! Most wooden handle screwdrivers are still used in the Aviation industry! Lots of people prefer them! It all depends on why type work you do... I worked in a Bus facility and the mechanics tools there were filthy! Drove me nuts!!! LOL Thanks so much!

    • @tmgallday1
      @tmgallday1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScoutCrafter they can deffinitly get filthy, but when it comes to gripping the screwdriver, wood handle beats em all.. Oil, grease, water, chemicals, ect are no match for wood handles. Anyways, beautiful job Scout, I love this one!

    I'm so glad you went back to find and claim this piece! You're right that it's hard to find the longer screwdrivers in decent straight condition. The temptation is just too strong to use them as pry bars, I guess. Great work on the lathe and on making that dingy handle look money!

      Hi Christina! You're so right, a 50+ year old screwdriver that is 16" long and still straight?!?! How did that happen!? LOL Those Tap-Caps on the back are usually an invitation for someone to use it as a chisel! This really was a hidden gem under years of "patina" lol Happy Halloween!!!! Thanks!!!!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Kathie! Those little ferrules are just stamped out steel cones that cover the end of the wood handle to prevent splitting from the side forces of the shank. On the cheap asian knock-off screwdrivers they are paper thin and tend to get dented and look crapy, the older, well made screwdrivers and chisels had were very thick and well made! They didn't skimp of material! =) Thanks so much!!!!!!!

      Hello Tron! You know, years back they restored the ceiling Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo, over the years the soot from oil lamps and candles left a brown film over the entire ceiling. It took years to remove the "patina" using toothbrushes and special solvents... When finished it looked just like it did when Michelangelo painted it... Awesome!!!! However don't you know there were "critics" complaining it should have been left brown! For the life of me I can't figure some people out... LOL Thanks very much!!!!!!!!!!
