Beautiful shears. When it comes to sheet metal in a tight area they are my go to tool. That sound is hard to duplicate, quality. His 50 cent lock is very unique. You keep me entertained 3 days a week. Thank You

John, my grandfather's 2 brothers had a jewelry business in Midtown Manhattan in the 1st half of the 1900s. My dad studied with the uncles while in school until WWII when he enlisted & went overseas. He ended up not becoming a jeweler, but that's another story. In our home workshop in Flatbush, we had various tools from Dad's apprenticeship including a pair of snips similar to the ones you restored in your video. I understood they were used for cutting fine sheetmetal & never wire. Our snips had a straight profile unlike your curved ones. I enjoy your very practical tool rehabs, great work!

Another great video Scout, I love the red touches on the snips. That really made them look high end. The advice about having more than one hobby struck a nerve with me as the surgery I need soon is to have my right wrist fused and I’m right handed which will make using a screwdriver very difficult. Using the lathe and mill should still be OK but rewiring the milling machine that I mentioned in my last video has become a priority as trying to use a screwdriver in a confined space won’t be happening. Those rip-offs on Fleece Bay are called “shill” bidding and it was riff back then. Still happens but not so much. I got caught out by another dirty trick sellers use just a few weeks ago, I found a tool at a bargain price and I was the only bidder but a short while before the auction ends the seller pulls the item because he’s not getting the price he wants. 🤬🤬🤬
    Cheers Stuart & Lea 🇦🇺

Great show today! Those cutters are sweet! As for the Ebay warning, I had seen things like that on Ebay, but I never understood why anyone would list things for ridiculous prices. Thanks for explaining it. I have a neat pocket tire gauge that will be in a future video. I thought I paid up for it at $10, but there are two of them in worse looking condition on Ebay right now. One is listed for $60, and the other is listed for $175!!! I think the 175 price is fishy.

Hello there from Russia. We have a proverb here - A moron, not a mammoth will never die out. A few years ago there was a local boom in Soviet kettlebells of a certain year of manufacture. Somebody started to buy 16 kg kettlebells. People started looking for selling exactly these kettlebells. A little later, rumors began to appear that these kettlebells were cast not from usual iron but from the rare alloy and cost much more. The kettlebells price increased even more, and many people started to buy them. And those first people who started to buy kettlebells while they still were relatively cheap sold them for a lot of money. And before that, it was the same with Soviet axes of a certain year of manufacturing. And before that, with springs from KAMAZ. One way or another, this happens every 5 or 6 years.

I have always known that style of snip as jewellers shears. The kind where the handles meet gives you a nasty pinch in the palm which forms a black blood blister and generates some real bad language. Lovely restoration and looking forward to seeing more of Cliff's tools receiving the Scoutcrafter treatment.

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agreed. That can be a bad design unless you are ready for it. I have a pair of foot long tin snips from my dad and eventually I just went out and bought s complete set of aviation tin snips just to avoid getting that blood blister from dad's old tin snips. Not everything older is better.

    nice lock I'm really impressed.
Ive been shopping Ebay as long as you. 97% of the transactions have been fine( over 600 purchases) but a couple sellers have tried some sneaky tactics. Ebay used to be all about Standing behind the buyer and not the sellers. That has changed as Amazon has stolen lots of Ebay sellers and there are many ebay buyers trying to scam the sellers. I've had Ebay not back me on some bad transactions in the last year and have decreased my shopping there considerably.

That kind of bidding on ebay are shill bidders. Happens quite a lot and you’re right, it’s despicable. I’m so tired of eBay, OfferUp and Craigslist because they’ve become filled with businesses more than used items and makes it so hard to search for what you want. And prices for everything used has ballooned. Probably because everyone is sitting home collecting their COVID-19 checks instead of working while selling their stuff.
Great tip for grinding the screwdriver! I’m going to try that! I really like the old T-jet and AFX Slot cars and still have them.

Bidding on cars is extremely risky on eBay. I bid on several cars and knew for a fact that I was paying way over market value. The first time I did it, I stopped and figured I’d lost the car. Two days later, the seller contacted me and asked if I was willing to buy the car for my last bid price because the winner never came through with the money. This happened to me several times, so I decided to try out my theory. I bid on a rusty old F1 50, and the price got up to over $50,000. I was willing to sacrifice my eBay account to see if the seller was a scammer. Sure enough, another bidder won the truck for 51,000. I was contacted two days later by the seller to see if I was willing to pay the $50,000. I told him I was going to report him to eBay and I knew what his scam was. I did that, but I don’t think eBay did anything about it. I learned to never ever buy a car on eBay.

Claus Clippers from Cliff, well that's a mouthful! Excellent lock. I feel you with the medical issues. I lost the use of my left hand, especially gripping, after a botched surgery. The thing is cold now all the time. I wear 2 pairs of winter gloves even in summer and I have constant _funny bone_ pain going 24/7 from my elbow to my ring and pinky fingers. I realized the other day when I tackled a flat on my Ebike that the rear bearings should probably be removed and regreased & readjusted but I might never even try due to my medical conditions. It's not like me to avoid "basic" maintenance.
Joint problems suck. I had scoliosis diagnosed when I was 13 and its all gotten much much worse since. Truth be it told I could go on for like an hour about all my med problems and barely scratch the surface so I'll just stop now. I'll just say I hope you don't have any in your neck. The neck is the worse because I get pain just from sitting up, but I don't want to spend all day in bed either. I spend like 3 days in agony after snowblowing the property like I did this winter. Having more than my share of med problems really stinks. Sometimes I feel like I don't live at all. I am very grateful for the YT channel and interactions or I'd barely have a social life at all.
Nothing is a cure all but I've had some good luck with Solaray's "Joint Formula" SP-2 but for months now the stuff has been unavailable at every place I check. It seems they have a new formulation but that is very hard to find, too. I've been meaning to write the company to ask them what has happened. You might try an herb called "Devil's Claw" or the tart cherry juice. They work but like pills they only last about 4 hours.
You do adapt. I bought some silicone baking mats that I have on the arm of my computer chair so when my super sensitive elbow is on there its not so rock hard that it sends the nerve pain to the moon. It's worse neuropathy than even diabetic neuropathy. The meds dull my mind and I don't like that aspect of it.
Beautiful work on the snips, SC! I've always done my screwdriver tips on the side of the grinding wheel on slow, if I have that option available. Short touches. I've gotten good enough over the years that I can even do Phillips tips on occasion when I am in a patient mood. Patience is key, but I will try to remember to try your methods one day.

Amen to the caveat on eBay, John. Fads come & go and people see things selling for big money, so they jump on the bandwagon and it becomes the norm, so people expect to pay the stupid prices without batting an eyelid... 5 years ago they were like 1/4 of current prices.
Screwdriver tip - not strange at all, that's what I've done for years!
Nice saw sets from MDB365 - I collect them too...
I use small shears (not as good as these) for making replacement brassware on Mahjong boxes I fix.

Very useful advice about Ebay. I am protected because my tool budget is so low. Reality naturally sets in. Petroliana prices are also sky high. So much for that participation. Screwdriver tip restoration is also useful. No question that tip repair is the diciest part of restoring a screwdriver into a useful tool again. Regards

In 1909, $25 men made on average $1.50 a day. That means that $25 took over 3 and a half weeks of salary to earn assuming a 5 day work week. So, if you worked for a month and spent no other money for rent or mortgage or food or fuel, you could buy it in a month. But, everyone has other expenses and the reality is that the organ or gramophone was an extreme luxury item and unless you made more than average or came into some unexpected good fortune, the average person would have to take a loan for something like that.

In 1909, adjusted for inflation, 25 dollars was about 800 dollars today. Still a good price.

10/4 on the beats on Ebay. I was going to get a pickaroon and the so-called 'vintage' stuff wouldn't even make JUNK! So I got a new one from Forestry Products and let the junk dealers keep their junk. And we're all like Cliff in some ways. When we have to, we adapt to something else. I'm adapting from being laid up with gout to mowing grass again. Going slow but I've been a slow baby and got worse from then on. Rode the short bus and was glad I wasn't walking. Thanks, John CS! =Nice driver and cutter too! GBWYou!

I've got one I'm not using. It's just sitting in the long tool handle section of my shed. Got a double ended railroad spike driver, too. They are both heavy beasts with ample patina and solid handles. I imagine it'd be spendy to ship anywhere, though. Not to mention bulky. Come to think of it since the riots burned down my Post Office I am not sure where I'd even go to ship it out.

@@johnpossum556 I got the new one with a long handle that works fine but 9/10ths on EBay were not even junk. Vintage garbage maybe. Looked like a worn out mattoc or such. VERY worn out. If I need one I'll probably get another from where I got the last one but I think my firewooding days are past. Too old and geezerish for such any more. Be Blessed, Mr. Possum! An old pal of mine called them Poor Sams.

@@lewiemcneely9143 I don't think I am ever going to swing those again. too much weight for my old frame!
firewooding is a young man's game. I did it when I stayed up north for a year in an 1800s house with nothing but a wood stove. I got super fit doing all that work and weighed the least I ever have in my entire life.
I don't think they're very worn out, though. I think my dad got them somewhere and they've sat most of his life and mine.

@@johnpossum556 Between me and my folks and the sawmill where I hung out there was firewood to get from the teen years on till year before last when the gout set in with a vengeance. Now everything will go to the son-in-law. We still have a half a shed full of wood but let the heat pump take care of us with not a whole lot of cold weather because of all the hot air coming out of d.c. I can swing a sledge but try not to put myself in the position where I have to. And I can't swing it long either. I always liked getting firewood but just wondering if I can make it to the potty and back sometimes takes the fun right out of it. It's finally calmed down some, thank God!

Nicely done. That is some really fine tools that will turn out spectacular. Ebay's problems have always been there. Rob "Rabbit" Pits made a lot of money manipulating bids until he was banned for life. Amazon although you can get could prices has many that are inflated. Buyer beware everywhere.

What I don't get is this... when his friends bid it up don't they still owe a percentage to ebay? I have never sold anything on Ebay so I am not familar with the exact details.

@@johnpossum556 Yeah it costs a percentage. Spend money to make money or you could say the costs of the long con.

Hello my name is Matthew. I am 21 and I have been watching you channel for a while. (No a good idea because then I go to eBay and buy the tool I see you restore). I have a question for you. Personally I am a patina guy. I like thinks to be as original as possible. But each to their own. One think I greatly dislike is scratches in the metal. Often when your restore a tool I can see in the polish fine scratches. My question to you is why make it look like a new tool from harbor freight. I think you should try plating the tools to get rid of the scratches. I would love to see plating in the channel. I also have some tools that I would like to donate to the channel. As I am in college and don’t have access to a shop.

I don't have a 4inch sander. But not having any luck doing them on the small one. Mine has a gard over the upper wheel. Do you think if I removed the gard it would work to use that wheel? Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That guard is easily removed but you can also use a drum sander on a drill or drill press... Just keep moving as to not create any dips in the metal... Soft and easy. =D
