I was just thinking that too. I was looking at it and thinking to myself "That looks too husky and broad to be a coyote. That's not a coyote. That's a wolf!" Look at the carving of his ears and the lining around the eyes. That's definately a wolf, not a coyote. Which I know you already knew that, lol.
I saw something that looked similar to this in Greenburgh NY. Everyone kept telling me that it was probably a coyote but he looked big, longer than a coyote, fatter and had more fur than coyotes. I was convince it was a wolf from doing a little research and reading some of the comments here i now believe that it was a Coywolf.
Beautiful! I would bet the farm that this is a coywolf (Red wolf/coyote cross) and an absolutely gorgeous specimen! Glad you taped it instead of killing it, like so many others would have done. He was doing what he was supposed to be doing- hunting in the woods. Thanks for sharing!
A study showed that of 100 coyotes collected in Maine, 22 had half or more grey wolf ancestry, and one was 89 percent grey wolf. And that's just in the sate of Maine. The theory now is that the large eastern "coyotes" are actually hybrids of the smaller western coyotes and grey wolves that met and mated decades ago as the coyotes moved toward New England from their earlier western ranges. DNA testing on western Coyotes shows little or no DNA from Gray Wolves.
@wicaco You are correct, Most Eastern Coyotes are hybrids and of the Eastern Coyotes that have been genetically tested, some groups have as much as 80% wolf genes.
OK... That was one of the best videos I've seen on here for awe factor. I loved every second of it. What a beauty! I've walked in the woods since I was a young and love seeing the wildlife around me. I was truly mesmerized. Thanks for sharing.
Commere, puppy!!! Coyotes are so cute and fluffy...almost worth getting scratched and bit just to snuggle with one. I'd be just like Lenny...hug him and squeeze him and name him George
Coywolves have benefited from the wolf genes they acquired from wolves from the standpoint that they use their environment differently and now hunt larger prey because they themselves are larger and bolder. While it might help to thin deer herds, I think this is also why you are starting to hear about more incidents involving coyotes stalking humans and even attacking them.
Wow, that's a huge coyote. His face an snout look more german shepherd like. He's a beauty, but I'd not want to face off with him. You are brave, and glad you were able to capture and share. :)
The reason I think this isn't an ordinary coyote is that it's looking staight at the man like a dog. Coyotes mostly aproach with their noses pointed down, it's unique to them. This one's gotta be a hybrid of some kind. He no doubt heard those tantalizing turkey calls and thought he was gonna get dinner.
LOL have you ever seen a wolf / yote hunt? they crouch and stalk their victim, this was just a curious animal. Note the flickering of the ears and stuff, if he were planning to attack he would have his ears back and tried to be more stealthy.
My guess is that the coyote was thinking "What is THAT silly looking thing? Oh my goodness I think that hes about to soil himself, I'm getting out of here"
Matthew Steele I enjoy eating wild turkey and venison, so that is why I always spend time, usually January thru March calling in coyotes and shooting them. We have way too many predators and it helps the deer and turkeys out. Coyotes eat a lot of rodents, true but they also kill squirrels, rabbits and pheasants and quail. There are many benefits for all wildlife when you kill a coyote. Im
It's proven that they breed with the red wolves..... I live directly south of Lake Michigan in Northern Indiana I've seen Transiant wolves 3 times here, two times they were Mexican wolves, one time was it an actual Timberwolf
@@dons8992 Interesting. Although Coywolves can get rather large so it is possible that is what you saw. I believe the Mexican wolf weighs between 50 and 80 lbs. Although unusual, Coywolves can get as large as 70 lbs.
That's definitely a coyote, in winter coat, which makes it look larger. The long skinny muzzle when it turns it's head sideways is a dead giveaway. A wolf has a much beefier head!
LOL. He almost messed his drawers, but the coyote probably did mess his. That was one of the best coyote "Oh crap, it's a human" clips I have seen. Good job getting him in that close. Did you get a turkey?
great vid did you get a turkey, Last year i was calling turkeys and a coyote came in and it had a redish coat, must have been mixed with a dog at some point maybe, wish I had a slug
Silly people, this man knows what he saw, and what species he has in his area. It's a yote.. No doubt about it. You can get a good look at it's coloring in 1:36. See the red behind the ears and on the muzzle? The saddleback dark grey and you can see the dark tipped bushy tail when it runs down towards him. Just a great furred yote. Wish the fur got like that on them down here in the south. I've never gotten one that nice looking!
What a beautiful coyote! He does look kinda wolfish, really just because of his size. But look at look at his snout....way too long and narrow to be a wolf. Wolves are alot stockier than this and their faces are much larger and more square. Gorgeous animal, what a cool experience for whoever got to film this.
For the people saying it was too brave to be a coyote, coyotes are the ones that are not so afraid of people, who have adapted to even living in the suburbs with people. Wolves are very shy and you would be very hard pressed to see them approaching a person at all. Even the researches who follow wolves with tracking devices barely ever get a chance to see them cause they are very shy.
Mmm. All of a sudden I am less and less keen to go camping in the USA. I think I'll stick to the UK where we are more likely to bump into geography teachers in our forests. I would have pooped and used up all my ammo if I was faced with that.
Good job, that Coyote looked a bit like a hybrid (wolf/coyote). I’v seen animals behave this way if your in full camo and remain still. They see you but don’t know what you are.
I have 40 acres near White Cloud, Mich, and lots of woods around us, we also have a pack of coyotes in our area, and they tend to stay away from us, and if they see me out back, they run away. They have been around our area for years, they will go after small animals "small dogs, cats, or fawns". Never had one attack a human, had one in a party store in Grand Rapids, poor animal was scared to death, but DNR caught him safely and took him back into the wilds.
WOW........ beautiful animal ! Saw one totally and completely blonde with a luscious mane... like this one...., but no markings at all. Probably 50 -60 lbs. Do not know about it's DNA, and don't care. BTW - for anyone to say that there are NO wolves, and NO mt. lions, in NYS.... they'd have to have 100% perfect knowledge. In other words, they'd have to be able to see into every cave, brush, forest tree, rock outcroppings and meadow all at the SAME time. or they 'just might be mistaken' !!! This canine had long ears and snout and wasn't too long legged .... altho hard to tell height..... makes me think either hybrid, or a young wolf. Just SO pretty ! Very sweet video ! Thanks for posting.
saw a coyote 10 mins ago. I live in central new york about 1 hour north of binghamton. Left my dog out on the deck to get some fresh air and heard him starting to bark aggresivly. hes a 120lb German Shepard. walked out onto the deck to check it out and there was a coyote looked 100% just like the one in this video just trotting along 5 feet from my deck paying no attention to me or my barking dog. was a cool sight to see him. he looked around 80 pounds full white thick coat.
Where was this footage shot? Cause if you were in North Carolina or near there, theres a good chance that's a red wolf or red wolf/coyote hybrid. The two species interbreeding has been an issue with that reintroduction.
Yeah... ...that was awsome. I am an avid coyote hunter in New Mexico and have had them come within 10 yards... but NEVER at a run to within several feet. Wow! That'll give one a primal instinct to fight. What an adrenaline surge!!!
I'm no expert, but that looked to me like it may have been a hybrid. Of course coyotes may look a little different in different parts of the country. A beautiful animal. Nice video.
@marmorala The most noticeable difference is the size. Some coyotes can still be equal in size to your average size dog. If you come across one you don’t have to worry as they are usually very shy. This hunter was in full camo so the coyote did not recognize him to be a human. If you just yell of wave your hands they should dart away.
Coyotes are breeding with Red Wolves in the East. If you go from East to West, across Canada anyway, the hybrid Coyotes get smaller and small to the West.
That really does look like a wolf, the snout seems much thicker than a coyote's. Well, at least the coyote in my yard. And the marking are different than my area coyotes. Where was this video taken? Thanks for sharing. I'm so glad you didn't shoot it!!!
@Cntryby86 how about stepping foot into a zoo where wolf and coyote's cage lines up and has a big board providing their info for u to learn and practice to visually distinguish their kinds? Would that work?
This has definately got to be a Coywolf! It's not pure wolf as it's ears are too pointed. Wolves have rounded shorter ears. Coyotes have much skinnier faces and look more like a fox. However I live in Saskatchewan and our coyotes are tiny compare to the Eastern Coyote or those that dwell to the west of us. Excellent Footage and there is no way I'd have held out sitting that long!
actually, Coyotes are dangerous when they get accustom to humans, so if you are in a suburban setting and a coyote is wandering into your backyard, you could be in danger. If you live in a rural area, and the coyote doesn't usually see humans, and you run into one in the middle of the woods, it'll just walk away, or RUN away. I live in the country, and I've literally been in front of a pack of 6coyotes, up here, stamp you foot and make a noise, an they run like hell. It depends where you live.
This coyote is truly beautiful. all dogs are related to the coyote as a coyote & red wolf mated & all dogs are a result of this match but this coyote is the real thing & has not been bred to suit mans needs as dogs have. The dogs ears flop over because man fed them the hearing lost importance.
I recently moved to the central NY state area and just saw my first coyote in our backyard. How worried should I be? ..there is a small child in the house.
I seen one once in my backyard, we looked at eachother (I was on my front porch, it was standing on a snowbank), and it looked away and continued on hunting. It looked like it was chasing the scent of another animal. Very powerful experience to come face to face with them in the wild.
Most Coyotes, especially in the Woodlands of the East Coast, range between 30-55 lbs. This Coyote looked fairly big, almost like a Wolf. Usually they are a lot easier to distinguish from their larger cousins, but this one was really filled out. "nicholasbhicks", I've never heard of a 75 pounder, but if they are in fact interbreeding with Wolves, I can see some achieving that size. That's scary to be honest, a 75 lb. Coyote, you might as well be going against a small Timber Wolf.
Agree. It's got that distinct broad wolfish "U" shaped muzzle & "smile"; front view. Its side view is more pointed & narrow - coyote-like. (The old filming makes the animal look heavy so it's hard to say it's part wolf with absolutely certainty.)
@zivstarosta what are you talking about? what does that have to do with games, i have a remington 870, and the gun looked alot like it, from what i saw. i don't get what that has to do with games
I read your post. but not sure if I'm interpreting correctly. I *thought* the guy was using a turkey call (though I don't believe I heard one). Combine that with camouflage and the hunter's ability to freeze. That coy/dog/wolf was highly curious (and probably very hungry as usual). I speak coyote too. It was a cautious, natural reaction to the call of potential prey. Nothing more. There was no malice in that animal toward the hunter.
Same thing happend to me at night. I was trying to watch the meteor shower and thought I heard something. I just turned the flashlight on and maybe 5 paces away on my front lawn was a yote stalking me. I think the sound of me smoking coupled with the small light it gave off attracted him. I live in the middle of the woods and I didn't hear him til he got real close. If that isn't a display of discipline, I don't what is.
That was awesome I like that you did not shoot it.That one looked alot like my German Shepherd;I hunt small game but I could never shoot a coyote or a wolf.
Amazing video. I'm awestruck he didn't shoot the wolf. I think I would have, just out of fear of being killed.. Beautiful animal, I had a hybrid, 25/golden retriever 75/timberwolf. Best dog I ever owned, different color but other than that they both look the same- so cool!
@philaheen i agree phil. what is very common now due to lack of natural environment is wolves mating with coyotes, this animal has a heavy head, thick set upper body, and 'CLEARLY' a wolf muzzle, zygomatic arc, and broader spread between the eyes! Though the ears look longer, they are not held at an angle. Most coyotes have ears pitched out to the side and slightly backward, like a jackal. Im going with 'wolf' on this one..if not a wolf/yote hybrid!..good call!
I was just thinking that too. I was looking at it and thinking to myself "That looks too husky and broad to be a coyote. That's not a coyote. That's a wolf!" They (coywolves) are out there and they are increasing in number. Day's comin' when have the M57 with me is going to be de rigueur.
I was thinking the same thing. It wasn't quite a coyote and not quite a wolf!
You gotta love the honest hunter. "I was this close to soiling myself". Yup I would have had the same feeling lol.
Thank you for not shooting it just because it's there. You're a respectable and worthy hunter.
Hunters do not do that. You can get in some serious trouble. Poachers are a different story.
He didn't shoot because it was a small predator. He won't think twice against a bear 😂. Even I won't.
Beautiful! I would bet the farm that this is a coywolf (Red wolf/coyote cross) and an absolutely gorgeous specimen! Glad you taped it instead of killing it, like so many others would have done. He was doing what he was supposed to be doing- hunting in the woods. Thanks for sharing!
Valerie Hunsinger ......I would of blown it's head clear OFF.😎
That's the most wolf looking coyote I've ever seen.

@wicaco You are correct, Most Eastern Coyotes are hybrids and of the Eastern Coyotes that have been genetically tested, some groups have as much as 80% wolf genes.
That's so beautiful! Looking into the eyes of a good ol coyote! A fascination with nature itself!
I'm a zoologist, that is most definitely a wolf. You can sometimes tell just by the sheer bulk, husky size of the animal.
Once that coyote realized it's mistake, it was like "HOLY CHEESEGRATERS", and beat the heck out of dodge...
That wasnt attack mode. More like curiosity on the coyote's face!!! Such a sweet face. It was as if he was smiling at you!!!
Coywolves have benefited from the wolf genes they acquired from wolves from the standpoint that they use their environment differently and now hunt larger prey because they themselves are larger and bolder. don't worry about not soiling yourself....several of us did it for you by proxy.....
got to go !.
thanks for the video young man.
How were you able to hold the camera steady when he charged?
The reason I think this isn't an ordinary coyote is that it's looking staight at the man like a dog. Coyotes mostly aproach with their noses pointed down, it's unique to them. This one's gotta be a hybrid of some kind. He no doubt heard those tantalizing turkey calls and thought he was gonna get dinner.
He looked just like my cat when she's playing! She's like "Ready, set, go, turn"! >
That's an amazing level of restraint. And honesty too
Beautiful creature. Thank goodness you scared him off and no casualties. Like newwolf1998xd, thanks for not killing him.
That's either the biggest, healthiest coyote in history, or it's a wolf.
That is one gorgeous coyote that's so wolflike my gosh:)
Good video. A little glimpse of the personality of a coyote.
It was all like "Imma Fire'in meh laser" and then at the last minute it was like "do not want" and turned around.
You are lucky to share your world with such a beautiful creature.
Oh my goodness I think that hes about to soil himself, I'm getting out of here"
A curious young wolf, not sure what he is looking at. "Oh, crap! It's a human!"
Around here the coyotes are very skittish... EXCEPT when they're not. Great video!
I love seeing these guys when I hunt. Truly beautiful animals. I don't kill what I don't eat...

Matthew Steele I was not opposing your view, just wanted to explain why I do shoot them. Be safe out there.
Coyote makes the best jerky I have ever tasted from wild game. Just saying try it once and you will be hooked.
Wow! That was beautiful, You got guts man. Good job!
Love this video. Can we get copy for The Wild Center?
Very interesting that you bring this up. It's been theorized that there may also be some cross breeding with red wolves as well.
That is a Mexican wolf, they're actually known to be kind of docile and not aggressive and actually not very tough either
It's proven that they breed with the red wolves..... I live directly south of Lake Michigan in Northern Indiana I've seen Transiant wolves 3 times here, two times they were Mexican wolves, one time was it an actual Timberwolf

Yep, if a coy wolf mates with a wolf, you’d easily get something this big or bigger, I think.
That's definitely a coyote, in winter coat, which makes it look larger. The long skinny muzzle when it turns it's head sideways is a dead giveaway. A wolf has a much beefier head!
At the end he was like AHFARK< A PEOPLE!
LOL! He didn't mistake you for "food", rofl! He was curious as to what you were.

Nice yote, did the shotgun mess up the hide?
such a beautifle creature three of them usually come by my house and hunt the rodents. iv seen them hunt a deer b4. very successful creatures.
I have to admit that that coyote is adorable.
its not a wolf, its a damn big foot I tell you

Almost certainly a coywolf. Too small for a wolf, but too husky for a pure coyote.
thats no coyote thats a wolf!
I agree
don't wolves travel in packs
Morion Bardwell ever heard of the term "lone wolf"
yep

Are you sure this ain't a brush wolf? Cause thats a big ass coyote!
Coyotes are breeding with Red Wolves in the East. If you go from East to West, across Canada anyway, the hybrid Coyotes get smaller and small to the West.
thanks for letting it live
props to you dude for not shooting the coyote. MUCH RESPECT.
probably my favorite video of all time.

That's a wolf. Coyotes have thinner muzzles and much pointier, triangular ears. This guy was close to a lot worse trouble than he realized.

Coyote attacks on humans are pretty rare, they're so scared of people. My uncle is a doctor and he says he's only had to treat a coyote bite once.
that was amazing, you never know what's going to happen in the woods!
As others have said, and it's obvious to anyone who lives around them, this is not a Coyote, it's a wolf.
And probably some alien would say "Chill dude. Nobody cares. It's just a Human".
