My old small gas engine teacher showed us a trick he would strip a wire bread tie and feed it through all the small holes and jets. Has worked very well for me. LIKE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!!
Had this exact problem yesterday. Got 8" of snow, tested the machine in October it was fine. Yesterday machine would not start. Snowing out ice cold, finally noticed the primer tube hanging and rotted at the end. Machine is from 1984 LOL. Taking the plate off to get at the carb, one screw stripped. Finally got it off and cut the rotted tube and reconnected it. Thanks to your videos, part 1 and this part 2 I know the seal on the carb is worn out. When I prime it it squirts out the top side of the bowl. I now think I can get it started and just need a total new carb. Just wish you didn't speed up the parts you did but the ones on regular speed were great. Wish I had a garage or shed rather than attempting to service in the open driveway LOL. Thanks for 2 perfect vids for my problem!! My machine is an ST24 Ariens with a Tecumseh 8 HP engine. Couldn't be more close. I also used the same flashlight, and believe it or not the same type of red handled phillips screw driver. Scary similarities. 👌👍👏👏🙏😉

i have the very same thrower, except Mastercraft from Canadian Tire 10hp 30" probably same year, i bought it a week ago, used. When you said premium gas, a red flag went off in my head, i was told all small engines like these and lawn mowers to never put premium in them, it messes with the timing of the spark plug. it's more expensive than regular, so regular gas is best. thanks for this video, glad you managed to fix her.
There is a very high volume of ethanol in regular fuel I use Premium. I have used it for more than 10 years and all my equipment runs great. These are not highly tuned engines. There is a sticker right on the newer ones to use non ethanol fuel. I am sorry I don't know what else to say. Ethanol left for 3 months leaves a sludge in the bottom of the carbs as they are vented to the atmosphere not like a car that is sealed from the air. Even a loose gas cap on a car will give you a check engine light. Just ask around to small engine guys.
I love two things about your video Bruce. 1)- I really love that dolly 2)- Wish I had a heated garage and large as yours too. Where can I purchase a dolly like yours? Are you living close to me? Montreal South West I own a small snow removal company and I have to bring my snowblowers up a flight of stairs Then into my kitchen to do repairs, and Duhhh no I never start my machines in my house.
Bruce, try cleaning your truck windshield with that Steel Wool (0000), it will look like a new windshield was installed. but do NOT use it on mirrors, they scratch easily.
Hello Bruce. I have a Sears Craftsman snowblower given to me, then I let my neighbor use it for his property. Every once in a while I have to borrow it back if my tractor has a problem. Are you saying we should be using premium 92 octane gasoline in this machine?

I use the 92 octane for all my Stihl products foe longevity, and ethanol eats rubber seals, hoses etc. I never thought about the more rugged type equipment like that Briggs/Stratton motor. OK, I'll let my neighbor know, and we should drain the old gas out of the carb so it doesn't jell up during storage. You're the best! And THUMBS UP!

All I can say is do your best when looking at them on line and check for different carbs on the fuel inlet's and control arms are sometime not compatible.

Bruce Pender Good job Inspector Gadget! I know what you mean on the disconnecting the linkage. I always mark where it is at with either a Sharpie marker or scribe the location. There is more room at the bottom of the carb on snow blowers than Lawnmowers to do the carb work.
Yet another "fine Mtd product" Snow Jet. That's another one to remember along with Yard works and Mastercraft. All bought out by MTD. What is MTD up to now about 20 different names to disguise themselves? Why can't they just build products under their own name? Because they know any educated consumer won't by an MTD product, so they go thru so much trouble to hide the fact its MTD. Their current motto for a growing world..... The worst was when the bought out Garden Way MFG. out of Troy N.Y. the makers or the true Troy-Bilt products. I had the pleasure of buying a Super Tomahawk Chipper shredder for $35 last month. The machine was a beast. Tuned her up and resold her for $450 a week later. MTD came along and purchased Garden way and that was yet another fine company that made fine products that they went ahead and boogered up majorly. Thank God Garden way did not give them the rights to the Tomahawk. Best damn residential chippers ever made. 8hp flathead Briggs. Damn thing had so much power bolts were rattling loose. All steel, no plastic, no fooling around. MTD is such junk. Now they're making and selling products even cheaper than them. But that's the bar. If you can buy something of higher quality than MTD your doin okay. You get stuck with an MTD or that quality that's a tough pill to swallow. MTD made decent products in the 80's and back. But even when they got their hands on the SNOWBIRD that piece of American ingenuity just vanished as well. From the mid to late 90's on MTD has done nothing but sell out, make their machines as cheap as possible to make as much profit as possible and they have outsourced the majority if not all of their operations overseas. Another company that sold out the American way of life for its workers to sell their products at a "bargain" but it's junk they are selling. Still can't get over the half the impeller belly on that machine their is plastic. They are all like that now. That is so piss poor. Major weak spot. Junk.... Yea Im not attacking you. Ive fixed a few myself. More power too you, they have to be fixed. That prior message is a general factual statement and I really hope people watching these videos and making comments or browsing the comments see's my post. MTD makes garbage. They are even worse now than that 15 year old unit in this video. If your going too buy a snowblower I would stay away from anything MTD. Or you'll having repairs done on it and no time. The older snappers are solid although I hear their arent many up there in canada. Ariens makes descent products vut I dont like how they are sticking tiny 254cc LCT engines on a 28 wide machine. If your going to buy a machine that large it needs outleast 318cc like the 8hp Tecumseh's that were installed previously. Snapper pre 2004 Ariens Machines in that quality range are what you want too look for unfortunately the truth is everything being built now, new, doesn't hold a candle to the older machine from the late 90's/ early 2000. That was the best time too buy a machine it had the combination of 100% American made, they were solid and the engines werent being downplayed like they are today. They also had snow kings on them which was a lot better but even if it had an American made OHV Briggs at 8hp you were in good shape, now................
MTD and the other brands have been low end cheaply built products for some time now. The old adage, “you get what you pay for” applies once again. You are right about people being shy about digging into carburetors. Either learn how to clean/rebuild carbs, or take it to the shop.
I'm thinking you got lucky on this one. The float "level" can not be adjusted the way you've removed it. Also small fuel holes in the throat of the carb were not cleaned. I will give you credit for a half as**d success.
Well Mark I have been doing this for a very long time. I have the Tecumseh tool for measuring the float distance. As well I can if a carb is full of gunk I have to go further. This one was better than normal. The small holes you are talking about were clear as i always squirt carb cleaner through them. Yes it may not be shown but they are the 3 tiny holes inside and outside the throttle butterfly. If you criticise you should be able to show how it is done. i challenge to make a video and show it. Good video, however, you don't have very good cinematography skills. You cover all the steps, but, for the novice like me I need little more show with the tell. You know what your doing and how to do it but you lost me part way through due to lack of visual image of what your doing. Ask some one to operate the camera for you to illustrate each step, please.
Well I went to your channel for some help as I am always looking to learn and improve my videos and saw you channels has no content. Perhaps you should do some videos teaching how to do produce and edit videos. I find it very difficult to do but I try to get through showing how to repair things.

In Mi we use Recreational fuel that has no ethanol. Works much better.

The don't have any air filters. But you can spray right into the carb if needed.

Mine only runs with the choke on and has no power. Good stuff. Only way to start it cold is to hold the fuel primer button in and don't let go.

I think my JD is an 85. There is a universal kit Tecumseh 631021B I think Here is a link..

I can never remember which way to orient those inlet float seats!
The point of the wire holding the needle points toward the choke but it works both ways.

they use brass on boats to clean metal so it does not rust from the steel. they have it at Walmart and ebay.
I'm thinking you got lucky on this one. The float "level" can not be adjusted the way you've removed it. Also small fuel holes in the throat of the carb were not cleaned. I will give you credit for a half as**d success.
Well Mark I have been doing this for a very long time. I have the Tecumseh tool for measuring the float distance. As well I can if a carb is full of gunk I have to go further. This one was better than normal. The small holes you are talking about were clear as i always squirt carb cleaner through them. Yes it may not be shown but they are the 3 tiny holes inside and outside the throttle butterfly. If you criticise you should be able to show how it is done. i challenge to make a video and show it. That carb still needed a lot of cleaning. You didn't get away with much of a shortcut. Better charge for full carb repair.

I dread when I see how a brass nozzle is cleaned with a wire brush. To put such a video on the web as repair instructions is irresponsible !!
You are right. I think you could be a bit more polite. But you are right, I did say to just touch it on there. Most of the comments that I get that aren't positive are from folks who have not made a video. But yes you are right

Good video, however, you don't have very good cinematography skills. You cover all the steps, but, for the novice like me I need little more show with the tell. You know what your doing and how to do it but you lost me part way through due to lack of visual image of what your doing. Ask some one to operate the camera for you to illustrate each step, please.
Well I went to your channel for some help as I am always looking to learn and improve my videos and saw you channels has no content. Perhaps you should do some videos teaching how to do produce and edit videos. I find it very difficult to do but I try to get through showing how to repair things.
We aren't Producers, Videographers or anything of the like Gary. If you want TV Quality videos, watch TV. Not having any content on your channel, yet being an armchair/keyboard master with NOTHING to back it up is so typical of critics. Think before you speak and ask your self....Would I appreciate such criticism? We've been posting videos for YEARS in the same manner and we're appreciated by the masses for the content, not the quality. We want people to feel like they're right there with us. We're Teachers. We Teach, Mentor and often build friendships beyond the confines of TH-cam. Post a few hundred videos of your own, then MAYBE you'll earn the rights to criticize others video quality. Bruce is a gentle soul which is why he was so kind in his reply. Me....I tell it like it is. You're an armchair Captain of your own domain.
