I am a published poet, memoirist, blogger and children's author. I am so inspired by Phillis Wheatley the first African American woman poet. I am going to publish seven poems this summer/fall. I am so happy! I believe in God. I try to go to church on Sundays too. It was interesting to learn that Phillis Wheatley was a member of a church.
It breaks my heart....and pulls at my heart strings how she had to live her life. I'm Honored to have the opportunity to portray her at an upcoming festival in my city. She had to go through so much, and she certainly left her mark in this world. She certainly is an inspiration to me. Not just as a writer, and a poet, but a strong God fearing woman.
As a light sculptor from the Show Me state, I was not taught that Ms. Wheatley was a black woman. I did not find that out until 2006, and I'd been in school quite a while. My degree in political science from an institution of higher learning founded by soldiers who survived the not so civil war definitely has served to sharpen my focus on the way I see her place and function in all that sets a standard of excellence in verbal communication in its written form. Knowing that she was alive during the same time as Sally Hemmings speaks volumes on how people who Washington and Jefferson saw women like her. It is clear Washington at minimum wanted to see her with his own two eyes. Jefferson wanted to feel better about Sally, and simply chose to dismiss/deny and discredit her ability. Showing that when a man is in the presense of a Queen, he will submit to her Truth or scoff and/or show his ignorance/cowardice to face her gaze. When you really give it some thought beyond the purely superficial, Ms. Wheatley gave the people of her day the most gracefully beautiful way of putting in their face publicly how hypocritical they were in their CHOICE to fail recognition of the Truth that makes a human being as they are. Staying at just the superficial, Jefferson was just all pissy because he met a black woman smarter and better read and more talented than himself. His ego was a weak one.
Saint Phillis Wheatley ought to be in American history books but more importantly Church History books. Because she is a living member of the true evangelical Church of God in Jeus Christ. A member of a Calvinist congregational church while serving her Lord and Saviour on earth. The entire premise of her life and work was her devout evangelical faith as a born from above believer delivered from her sins. Phillis Wheatley never thought of her life as a victim of the evils of men as in the slave trade. Lie the story of Joseph God used her evil circumstances for good in order to bring her to America to hear the gospel and be saved. Unlike the phony gospel of liberation theology which places all of its emphasis and energy to write social wrongs and injustice Phillis was passionate believer of the truth that the greatest gift God can bestow upon a sinner even a slave is not his or her emancipation from temporal evils even of a slave but an emancipation from the evils of sin that lie in the heart of both slave and slave master. Hardly something you will ever hear from our most prominent civil rights champions who bear the title of Reverend today. Phillis Wheatly loved the evangelist George Whitefield for the truth of the gospel he preached to the blessing of many, many souls in American and England. This is this Saints first love and dedication not social causes. Phillis Wheatley belongs first and foremost to the company of elect sinners chosen in Christ from the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1:4,5; Revelation 13:8. As a member of God's redeemed adopted family not God's fallen, unbelieving and ungodly created human family Phillis Wheatley is an in tragal member of Christ's body the church. The first born from among the dead, the church of the first born whose names are written in heaven. Hebrews 12:22-24. It must be preserved in the interest of truth and history that this extraordinary woman saw her whole entire life and anything good she may accomplish as a faithful Christian. Phillis Wheatley was, is and will always be God's gift to His church and humanity. In that precise order. This is the difference between a real and heart felt righteousness, Ezekiel 36:24-27; Jeremiah 31:33 and the superficial and pretended righteousness of social reformers and abolitionists of her day as well as ours. This godly saintly woman would be severely injured, and her genuine legacy tainted and confounded if we do not set the record straight. I hope to do just that as this my sister in Christ must be recognized and remembered for what her real identity and legacy is for the people of truth and the nation where her God given brilliance ought to shine in a world where the darkness overtakes all who are without Christ who is the only way, the only truth and the only light leading to the Father! John 14:6 I say to all what Phillis would say to all, repent and believe the gospel and turn from all sin! Jesus is able to save to the utmost all those come to God through him!
Phyllis Wheatley inspires me so much. I thank God for her ♡
