I get it, Tayler. I have a cardigan and a Ranunculus on the needles and I want them both, but don’t want to knit them. My friends I share a podcast with seem to get all the things done and I’m like a crow, looking at all the shinies. ADD is real, people.

The sweater you are wearing is gorgeous!!😍I love the wide sleeves and cuffs and the split cuff. It looks like you may have purchased it from a store, but, if you know of a similar pattern . . . Please share. I would love to knit a sweater like the one you are wearing. Thank you!

My take on your dilemma, for what it’s worth.
People make a big to-do about process vs. product knitters. I watch podcasts where the presenter checks off a list of everything they’ve done since last you saw them, with an overtone of goals achieved. Checking the box and having the finished product really drives them.
It seems to me that you have so many balls in the air, all incredibly fulfilling projects, esp your kids. So your knitting time is precious.
The next cast on? I vote for the one that gets your engines revved!!! The one that’s the most fun to knit and keeps you inspired. ❤

I am a monogamous knitter, but I use the itch for a new project to push through tricky parts of my current pattern. So, if I'm feeling sluggish, I'll scroll Ravelry for inspiration, pick a new project, and finish my current one.

Nothing like a good cardigan! I’m not a monogamous knitter unless a project really makes me want to keep going so I can wear it. Usually I keep socks as my portable knit, I keep a complicated knit at home, and I try to keep charitable knits going. All different yarns and needles so my hands stay healthy and my brain doesn’t get tired.

Hey, About the shawl. I was never a shawl person until I joined the Stephen West Mystery Shawl KAL several years ago. I never wore shawls and I didn't wear it for a couple of years after I made it. I thought I would but ya know how that goes. Anyway, when its chilly in the morning or in the evening when I only have on a little cotton tee and I'm chillin' on my porch or my fave chair in front of the tv a light weight shawl is just perfectly cozy around my shoulders. I suggest that you keep on knitting your lovely shawl until its the recommended length. Trust me you will LOVE it. Forget about wrapping it around your neck, save it for those chilly times when your shoulders need a little something, you have a nice hot cup of tea beside you and knitting in your lap. Trust❣

I’m just on the other side of figuring out what to do knitting wise. So it was a choice of finishing one of 3 pairs of socks that are on needles, or the MoonSet tee shirt. But, I want to cast on the Big Love cardigan or the Weekender pullover. 🎉🎉🎉 and the winner is the Big Love cardigan. Although my husband asked what happened to the Moon Set tee I was working on.😊 on your shawl how about one more eyelet then bind off. Hopefully that would be a halfway point compromise. Stay safe from the storms. And, I look forward to seeing you Wednesday.💕 Iris

Message from Sharon England.I think some people are happy to plod along with a project. I'm kinda like you, I get impatient to reach the end. Knowing that it may be too small or too big just kills me! I think that's why I like smaller projects like bottle holders or toys. We're all different.❤

I’m a monogamous knitter. It has never occurred to me to cast on multiple projects at a time unless there is a reason to do so ( I want to give a gift and need to start and get it done). You have made me realize that there are actually some really good reasons to cast on multiple projects and I am going to start doing that. You mentioned always having a pair of socks cast on and I love that idea. I think I will knit more socks if I have some cast on and ready go be worked when ever I get some time. There is also the fact that sometimes I won’t knit at night while watching tv ( my prime knitting time) because I’m in the middle of a part that takes concentration. If I have multiple projects I cast on chances are one of them is going to be simple mindless knitting. I also hate casting on projects while I’m trying to relax at night so having multiple cast on means that even if I finish something I have something to work on. There’s no virtue in being a monogamous knitter. As long as you are finishing things I think having multiple projects is a great strategy.

Cast on whatever you want. BUT dedicate hockey practice to the black t-shirt only. It will grow slowly but not with the drudgery. And it might be time to let the shawl be done. You are little so it might be big enough for you. Remember, all of this is for fun and you’re the boss!❤

I think you might enjoy casting on everything you're thinking of, then every time you're ready to sit down and knit, line up all the project bags like soldiers at attention, open them all up and peer inside, and pick the one that's calling to you the most that day (notice the omission of any "shoulds" in this advice). 🙂

I get it! I started knitting a child’s dress for my granddaughter. She was here recently and I showed her mother the back that I had finished and I could tell by her expression that she didn’t like it - she doesn’t like homemade garments. Since then I haven’t wanted to work on it because I know it will never be worn. I had a hard time knitting anything for a while when I decided I needed a comfort knit so I started a knitted blanket using Vanna’s’ Choice white and the Row One mini skeins so it’s changing color all the time. I’m loving it and it’s giving me back my desire to knit!

  • @minseycrafts5099
    @minseycrafts5099 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Throwing in my fifty cents. I also try to be conscientious of where the yarn I buy is manufactured in, but on the other hand, it's just people trying to make living there, and the average person probably doesn't have much say in how their country is governed, they just want to feed their family. So I really struggle with it.
When it comes to that itch to cast on a new project, I have that frequently, but since I can't handle too many WIPs at the same time, it actually turns out into a delayed gratification when I do get to cast on the long awaited project, it is so much sweeter :)

I'm totally with you on the new cast on. I try to always have a fingering weight sweater (that is usually more complicated like lace or cables) on the needles and then also have a DK or aran weight sweater going at the same time for that quick satisfaction of seeing real progress from my knitting. Sweaters are my favorite things to make, so having those plus a few other small things (like a pair of socks, a shawl, a toy, etc) make it so I have something to grab for any occasion that I want to knit at. Its like diversifying your knitting portfolio lol

I understand too! I've challenged myself to be monogamous and I made it through 2 prs socks, shawl and a cowl. Now I got the itch. My PYE gave me a pin that says castonitis😁 I would use a progress keeper to motivate my work on the black tee. I did the same, turned a black tee into a long sleeve top and I wear the heck out of it, especially under cardis or my Jean jacket. Sending you good vibes.

So, first can we talk about your sweater? I LOVE those sleeves! Had to keep rewinding because I was focused on how to make those sleeves! I screenshotted them to study them more, hope that's ok? And second, it's like you're inside my head! I have a pattern I just cast on, couldn't wait. Something I wouldn't normally wear, but looks like a fun knit. It's the Berroco Desertstar, which is a sleeveless hi-low sweater. I've gone back and forth with adding sleeves to it. So I combed through my patterns for the perfect sleeve, and am thinking about a peek-a-boo sleeve, which I've never done, so we'll see. I hesitate because after having worked a few rows, I'm worried that although I went with the largest size, I'm not sure it's going to fit. I'm hoping it drapes more fully, the more fabric is created. I'll probably leave off the ribbing at the arms, try it on, and then decide on the sleeves. By the by, my go-to patterns are bell and mermaid sleeves, anything that generates movement.

Love how honest you are with your struggles when it comes to your wips - thank you for that
If I had your wips i would probably:
    Cast off the shawl
Have the T actually stay a T (cuz the idea of a knitted shortsleeved T is great and something that you can’t really buy)
Start a cardigan with some unique style element like cables so it is actually worth knitting

I'd throw the shawl on a lifeline where you think you want to be done and try it on from there. I personally use interchangeable needles, so typically I'll just connect a few cables to try things on. Super helpful with adjusting sweater patterns too.

I just finished my black tee yesterday. Sort of cheated cause it's crocheted. Took less than a week to make the panels, then I watched it collect dust for 3 weeks before seaming. Love it so i will be blocking it quickly to wear it. There's my reward.
Sat down with a list projects to bust through my stash. Only working on a brioche scarf/shawl but need another project to maintain my sanity. Socks are my go-to but i need 1 more. My decision making device is simple - roll dice or flip a coin. Legally binding in my eyes and no best 2 out of 3.
Take care out there - CA/Mexico hurricane and Canadian wildfires.

When I hit a slump with a project I like to do a palette cleanser knit that is literally just for fun. I may not need it, I may not ever wear it, it just to get through the creative slump. Sometimes I need something with colour or texture or patterning that makes a knit fun. Lately it’s been hats with colourful hand dyed that are my palette cleanser. They are great gift knits too. I try not to cast on another large project if I have a large project that is the cause of my “meh” feelings toward knitting. Because they are a time investment, if I’m already in a bit of a slump, I will likely lose interest before I’m done and then I’ll feel worse for having two large projects sitting without much progress. I sometimes just need that quick, pretty, fun and FINISHED project in between

I think the fuzzy grey needs to be that split hem pullover. And yeah I have to always have something that's just a boring knit-working on a body, so I can get away from sleeves. But I've discovered something about myself-I LOVE to work on visually stimulating projects, like colorwork or Noro, something where it's always changing, but what I love to WEAR is beige, grey, dark grey, taupe, charcoal grey and black pullover, and the more simple/plain the better (I have knit I think 6 "Forager" by Melody Hoffman.) Those get really boring to work on though. So I try to always have a colorwork something and also an afghan (currently working on 3 with color) going at the same time.

In my head and to my students, my advice is always that patterns are suggestions for your own garment. If you do not wear large shawls, bind off before the next eyelet pattern section. You have put lots of hours already and when you wrapped it around your neck, it looks great. If you are not going to wear it as a wrap around your shoulders, make sure to have something functional for YOU..... just my opinion.... Judi from Virginia.

This is 100% a therapy thing, but I’m noticing that you’re “shoulding” on yourself a lot when talking about what you want to start. I think you could try and word things with “want” and that may help you discover what you want to cast on next or if you want to cast something on. I frequently have to do this in my life and it has helped me a lot especially in my crafting life. ♥️

The shawl progress issue is real. You have a good feel (I think) for sizing for yourself and for the modifications of projects. I think you can always trust your gut! As much as I love wearing black, the idea of knitting (fingerweight!?!?) with black yarn is a hard No Thanks! I salute you for your black tee-> sweatshirt 👍🏾😊👏🏾 If I can buy products locally, I do. Yarn is another story. Not much is produced near me but I like to look for yarn at least processed in the country tho the fleece might be imported. Much depends on my budget. [I have two shawl WIPs that are languishing simply because each row is now so long, it takes a while to make noticeable progress. I just this weekend tho finished my Vitis shawl (Lisa Mutch pattern) that was very fun to knit...and I'll definitely make another. I just last night cast on a sleeve for a cardigan (adapting a pattern I'd used years ago from the Yarn Girls). Using LB Fishermen's Wool with a strand of mohair/silk. It's far too warm (hot) to be knitting this now so I may go back to my latest sock WIP... for the time being.]
P.S. the sleeves on your top are fabulous❣

I am a monogamous knitter, but I understand your thoughts about casting on something new. As I get closer to finishing something, I find my focus shifts into what I want to make next. I know that I cannot have more than one large project going because I will never finish. So, I set little goals to keep up momentum, like knit an inch or two a day, reach the sleeve divide, color/skein change, ribbing, one sleeve, etc. I'll place a progress keeper so I can actually see and measure my progress each day. For example, I am currently knitting the stockinette body of a fingering weight tee. I know I need to knit 12 inches before the ribbing. So, I set my goal to knit 2 inches a day, which means I will be done in 6 days. My reward for finishing, is casting on my next project AND an FO that I will love.

Hi Tayler, I am usually a monogamous knitter but lately I am starting more projects at once (right now I have 2 pairs of socks, a cumulus blouse, a Tolsta in fingering weight and a Cecile top going🙊) I am not sure why I am doing this, but it is what it is. i want to make sure I finish them all so I alternate and do not feel guilty 👌 I too would like to knit a cardigan and will this fall I think 🤗🤗 I think your Isager yarn would be great for that, go for it!

I forgot to mention that knitting black is hard on the eyes and slower as you don’t see it as well so, for me, that is what makes it hard to knit black

i live in So. Cal. and the lack of cold weather can be annoying for a knitter. I plan to knit all my cardigans and not have any store bought... that's the plan. I am knitting lots of cotton baby projects lately, but a trip to Chicago is making a change on my needles and cardigans cast on! Also, want a big oversize sweater... or several

I am attempting to do the same with my cardigans in the coming years! So far I’ve replaced my favorite yellow cardigan with a wool/cotton blend because that was the one I had worn through the elbows first! This one was DK weight, but I think I want to do the others in an untreated/non-superwash fingering weight for a more versatile wardrobe piece.

Ha! I’ve never been called a monogamous knitter but I am! I totally dream about my next project almost constantly once I hit the halfway point so I get where you are even if I don’t have multiple WIPs on the needles at once. I just use that excitement to finish the project I have going so I can get to the next one! I love your black long sleeve and if I were you, I’d focus on it since it’ll be the perfect time to wear it soon 😊

Good Monday Morning! A few thoughts. Shawl: the way you are planning to wear it should dictate the length/ width. You are petite and shouldn't be swallowed up by a garment. Is it possible to do one moe eyelet, five rows and then picot? If not picot away.
Black sweater: maybe 3/4 sleeve. If long, then work for an assigned number of inches or minutes each day.
Cast on: itchy fingers/fall in the air/whatever.....all lovely ideas.....you have been talking about cardigans for some time now. Just do it.
Save the yarns for Terrazzo and pick a color to match your eyes for Eclair.
    New cast on:

the shawl is coming out beautiful, love the color....think of it like a blanket and just work on it when you need a mindless change. I totally understand about the feeling of a large project. I actually did that with a shawl and ended it early but it totally did not work so I'm going to start it up again and finish it so it's finished the way it was meant to be. and I think if you do this Hallows shawl at the full size you can use it on cold nights maybe just over your shoulder or you can wrap it differently instead of around your neck...but it is coming out pretty.

I never feel guilty for starting a new project when I have other WIPs going, which I always do. I love to knit and sometimes I like to knit for the sake of the craft and not worry about finishing things. That said, I do set small goals for myself with projects, and that satisfies my "finishing" projects guilt. Go for it and cast on another one. We do this because we love it and sometimes we just need a new feel on our needles. Love your candor!

So…I’m committing to finish the one that I’ve lost the most interest in so that…I can reward myself by working on the one I’m most excited about!

I completely relate to your struggle. I always want to start new projects. I once saw a cartoon that said something like “Cast on 536 stitches. Knit each row until you have lost the will to live.” You have reached that spot with your UFOs. What I find that helps me, is I will cast on that new project, but I will designate a chunk of time each day I want to work on that new project (can be as little as 5, 10, 15 mins or maybe just 5 rows] to continuing work on the UFOs. That way you are doing something more interesting and continuing progress because you know you will hit the wall on the new project, too. Maybe by then you will be back to the interesting bits on the other ones. I hope the rain doesn’t stay too long!

Knitting black or any dark yarn is never that much fun, you don’t the pleasure of seeing your stitch work. I knit a bit for kids in refugee camps . This is so much fun, as the charity wants colourful individualised items, so you are free to play with colours and textures. Choosing and planning what to knit next is fun as well. I find it harder to knit wearable cardis, than pullovers. So it seems to be harder to choose the right cardi pattern and yarn. I do love the Eclair sweater, looks very elegant

Dew it, you already have the yarn, if it brings you happiness, then do it! Also same for shawl, if ur gut says stop then do, otherwise u’ll just wish you did when you finish. We all have different preferences for length etc, customising for u makes sense. Thank you for sharing these thoughts, makes my own feel normal haha.

I totally know what you're talking about. I like to enjoy the process of my knitting and crochet. I like seeing how the fabric works up or the yarn knits up. It's so satisfying. And that is why I tend to knit pieces with texture, patterns, and color. But functionally I would want more neutral sweaters in my wardrobe, but they just don't inspire me at all to work on.

  • @hyggekrogknits

You should try a pressed flowers cardigan - everything you described about the fascination of watching the fabric emerge is how I feel about the pressed flowers pattern! Also, it would look beautiful in your hand died and a neutral main color.

Cast on the Noro and mohair yarn. I want to see that knit up. I think it will be beautiful. I just balled up some Malibrigo in the Solis colorway and I'm going to start a short sleeve pullover. I've kind of not knit for the past month. Just crocheted on my blanket. I say jump into the pool with both feet! Start the Noro sweater. Your shawl and your black pullover looks great. I hope the storm goes around you and you stay safe. I'm in Washington state and in Eastern Washington near Spokane, a fire has broke out and has gotten bad. Here in Western Washington, we can't see the sun because of all the smoke from that fire. And you can smell it too. I think the rest of our summer will be in a smoke haze.

A few thoughts: 1.Follow that gut and cast on a new project, this will give you a boost!
2.I usually end up shawls and wraps earlier, because I'm a tiny person and the visual expression of the project is way more important than completing the whole recipe, because usual these projects are written with all sizes in mind, so some people suffer from the complex that taller people are prettier, but no they are just more proportionally dressed up. 🤭
3.On black project adding colorful stitch markers or at least golden Light bulb Stitch Markers on every 10 or 20 rows keeps the visual excitement from the progress. 😉

I think the Isager would be best for a jumper (sweater) and the Noro would make a lovely cardigan. And I think the reason you want your black tee to become a long sleeve is because you seem to enjoy the process of “creating” not just “executing”. 😊

I feel your pain with the Black yarn. It took me a year and a half to finish a black cardigan 😂 I told myself I wouldn't make anything else in solid black! & here we are... I just finished a beanie hat and a double beanie in, you guessed it, black yarn! I had to start a few other projects with light colors to work on to satisfy my need for color. I would work 30 minutes on the black beanie and then reward myself with knitting time on the pretty color yarn. Start the new project, it will help you to get through the black "tshirt", which is gorgeous, by the way!
