Of course. 🙄. I swear Sony is like the complete opposite they come out with some so infrequently while hifiman comes out with something every year.
I respect your findings, but my personal experience puts the perceptible **warmth** of this unit somewhere between my speedball and my d90. There is (again, in my opinion) a perceptible warmth available from this dac (and other r2r dacs) that isn't found in the cold/analytical delta-sigma dacs found in countless products out there.... all chasing the exact same THX target.
The difference is that in this case you get that warmth, and an insanely powerful amp, for what many people pay over 1000 just to feed signal to their amp of choice. You mentioned the power the amp has... but looking at something like bass specifically (for the bassheads out there)... this unit delivers a tight, controlled bass (through planar and dynamic) that simply can't be touched by counterparts in its price range (which let's be honest.. is 400 not 500... you've been able to find it at that price regularly [new] since 2022)
Golden sound reviewed this and found it had phase issues and output 3 watts not 4.4 watts
I was a little disturbed by Goldensound's findings too. I trust him implicitly (being a fellow Brit), but on my model I failed to notice the phase issues he had with his. Maybe mine didn't have the same issues 🤷🏼♂️
this has phase issues...i wouldn't touch it with a tentpole...lot of these are getting on the used market...
I got focal mg clear pro, ( and I am confused on what amp/dac to get ) any recommendation is appreciated (upper limit is 800usd)
Get any that fits your budget and gives you the features you need. Schiit makes good products for quite affordable prices. Same for Topping and SMSL. Worry less about these components and just enjoy your music.

I'd give the Fiio K9 pro ESS a try. I've been using it for a few months and love it. Coupled with either dynamic or planar cans it really shines. It's my endgame DAC/AMP

I found it to be a very pleasing sound, but not as laser-focused in the imaging as my Fiio K9 pro ESS. I wouldn't describe the sound as more "analogue", just maybe less analytical. The leading edge of high frequency sounds can seem a little smoothed over, but it's not necessarily a bad thing, just different. The thing I noticed most was that it lacks weight when compared to the Fiio. The fiio feels more engaging. Hope that humble opinion helps

So you stress the importance of volume matched testing and then you go ahead and break that rule by changing the volume.
Do you know why we volume match? It’s to start with a baseline. Changing volumes isn’t a departure from testing because we are still testing. If there’s a perceived difference when volume-matched, then changing volumes on one equipment may provide some additional info about whether that perception is a mistake in hearing, or whether that difference becomes more or less noticeable, or whether it is environmental, or perhaps even some issue with the setup. If there’s a difference when volume matched, don’t we need to figure out where that difference might be coming from? Just claiming there is a difference without putting more effort into figuring out if that perception is real is the actual problem-not modifying the tests to gather more info.
@@NoThemeReviews The whole point of doing a level matched test is to eliminate perceived differences from the things you mentioned. Otherwise, there's no point in even bothering with it.
So your argument is that once there’s a reasonably volume matched perceived difference, we stop and don’t investigate further? Seems a bit wonky, especially if we want to rule out any other potential contributors to the perceived differences. If you’re satisfied with just claiming there is or isn’t a difference after volume matching, that’s great. I prefer to take another step to verify. As you know, the scientific method requires that we alter and modify tests/hypotheses to verify results. Otherwise there is no scientific method. 🙄Disagree if you want, but I have valid reasons to do things my way. Thanks for the feedback.

With the way companies throw stuff into the market, yes, it is old now. Every month it's something new.
The channel imbalance is a deal breaker for me. After having the JDS element 3 I'm on my endgame. At this point I'm almost out of the hobby entirely.
I wouldn't worry too much about the imbalance. I have been testing the EF400 for a few months and haven't noticed a lot of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. Any slight imbalance at very low volumes (which also occurs on some much higher-priced units) can be solved by always reaching your desired volume from a lower level rather than a higher level (always turn UP to the desired volume). Apart from that, I've been happy with the EF400, in my humble opinion.
