    In 1984 I bought a 64 t-bird for $50.00 because the guy thought the rear end was bad. All that was wrong was bearings. It was white and in really nice shape. I drove it for a few years as a second car to my daily truck. It was a great date car and cruiser. I miss it, would love to still have it.

    I’ve always said that 1964-1966 were the most desirable years for Ford.

    Imagine the joy of having a time machine to go back to those years!

      If I had a time machine First place I’d go 1940 packard dealership and then international dealership lol
      I have the 1964 issue of road and track the mustang issue in the classifieds there was a ad for 1926 Bugatti didn’t say what type $5,600 granted that was a lot of money but only a fraction of what that car is worth now would have been an excellent return on investment

      Me too! But all my $100 bills I could bring back with me to buy a good used one would show they were printed in 2022 and I'd would end up in the federal pen for counterfeiting. At least Marty had Doc Brown to provide him with some 1955 cash.

    Hi, new subscriber here. Love your channel. We have a 64. The lock unlock above the window switches are to lock out the rear power windows. The vent under the rear window is the intake for the flow thru ventilation, and it works great, and actually helps defog the rear window. Forward motion of the car also pushes air through the cabin when you open the vents, and can be pushed through the heat, and defroster, without using the fan, when set properly (according to the manual).. We've tried it on cold days, and it works.

    Back then T-Birds had a unique aura. Just about everyone would gawk when a new T-Bird would drive by. Thunderbird interiors were modern, futuristic, intended to remind you of aircraft and space age controls. An example is the vent controls you mentioned. All of the 4 seater T-Birds had the curved back seat. It made the car feel more unique and exclusive. You mentioned the 390, 427 and 428 (ThunderJet not CobraJet). A 427 . . . same 427 as in other high powered Fords, such as a Cobra. Too bad Ford followed the “ lower, longer, wider, heavier” thinking with the T-Bird. Although they did indeed sell more, until they didn’t. Some of the optional extra cost features like emergency 🚨 flashers are required by law now. Thanks for another video and your perspective.

    I was around to see those cars new. I loved the style back in late 1963 when they hit the showrooms. The coolant filler is on the surge tank which is the highest point in the cooling system. It cannot be filled from a lower point and the radiator was lower. The place where the glove compartment should be is where the heater and air conditioning stuff was. The C6 transmission came out in 1966 (1960s part numbers start with C and 6 denotes sixth year). That's why it was a C6. I had a "64 Galaxie with the same mirror. I had to replace it. There are three cables that tip the mirror around. It feels a little funny now, but back then it was great. In 1970 the whole mirror assembly with the cables, mirror, and little handle was nine bucks at the Ford dealer. I thought it was too expensive. Great review. Thanks!

    Great video. In 1986 I bought my second car-- a 1966 Thunderbird, and two years later, I bought my third a 1964 hardtop. I had them for years but sold them when I started grad school. Hated myself for doing that until last year when I bought my 1964 Convertible. It's a completely restored-- red with white top and interior. Her name is Wanda, after the red witch. I saw a burgundy roadster for sale a few years ago---Burgundy with a matching burgundy interior--it sold before I could snag it. It was stunning. I also ran across a 1965 with the factory 427--one of of about 20 known to exist. The colors were just like mine, red, white interior, with a white top. The owner said it would cover the quarter mile in about 13.5 seconds--which is mind-boggling for anyone who has ever driven one with a 390.

    Even though this video is a year old I had to comment and share a unique story about our 64 T-bird. My brother won a 64 T-BIRD and a lake cottage from Ford, he was about 13 or 14 at the time and entered the contest using my dad's name. The car was worth over 7k, not the 4-5k you spoke of. People would stare at us when we drove by. I was little and sat on my mom's lap in the front seat. It was very fast, my dad opened it up on the highway. My oldest brother took the car out without permission in 1967 and totalled it😢. Our next car was a 68 Beetle...true story.

    Great video, but I wanted to make a couple of corrections to various statements you made: 1) The Thunderbird Landau model had a full vinyl roof...not the half-vinyl roof that you mentioned. The model was named Landau because those elongated-S-shaped bars on the rear pillars were called "landau bars". Landau bars were originally the exterior folding mechanism for drop-top vehicles. They were often applied as ornamentation on hearses before Ford introduced them on the top-of-the-line 1962 thru 1972 Thunderbirds. To your point, a "landau roof" in the 1970's did mean that the rear half of a car's roof was vinyl-covered while the front half was "bare"; if the front half of the roof was vinyl-covered while the back half was bare, it was called a "canopy" roof. 2) You mentioned at the end of the video that the 1965 and 1966 T-Birds could be had with a 427 or 428 cubic inch engine...which is not true. Ford never installed a 427 in the Thunderbird. The 428 was available in the T-Bird, but not until the 1966 model year (the 428 was then replaced by the 429 at the end of the 1960's); like the '64 T-Bird, the '65 could only be had with the 390-4V engine. Again, very entertaining video!

      According to Wikipedia 427 was an option.. I saw it on a few other sites as well because Wikipedia isn’t the best source to get info from

    • @bobcarlino7280
      @bobcarlino7280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@What.its.like. You're quite welcome! And you're right about Wikipedia not always being accurate. During the course of its life, the 427 was installed by Ford in full-size Fords & Mercurys; a select few Fairlanes and Comets; and then in the '68 Cougar XR-7 GTE...never in any T-Bird. I noticed within Wikipedia mention of Ford's "Tilt Away" steering column being continued and being a recognized feature of T-Birds...which is not exactly true. From 1961 thru 1966, all T-Birds had Ford's "Swing Away" steering column. With that feature, the steering wheel didn't tilt at all; instead, the entire steering column would swing to the right once the transmission was put into Park. The Swing Away steering column was optional at extra cost on full-size Fords and Mercurys, but only in the 1963 & 1964 model years; other than that, it was unique to the T-Bird from '61 thru '66. In the 1967 model year, the Swing Away steering column was dropped entirely and replaced by the Tilt Away steering wheel. The Tilt Away steering wheel lasted for the '67 & '68 model years only, and was only available on the T-Bird, Mustang & Cougar (full-size Fords & Mercurys got the more-basic tilt steering wheel as an option). What's the difference? The Tilt steering wheel operated like any other tilt wheel; the Tilt Away wheel, however, not only operated like any other tilt wheel, it also had a feature whereby once the transmission was put in Park and the ignition shut off, the steering wheel would automatically (mechanically, not electronically) tilt all the way up, then to the right...which greatly facilitated getting in and out of the car. The engine could not be started again until the steering wheel was pulled back down into the position it was in before the tilt-away feature kicked in. I always thought the Tilt Away wheel was an awesome feature, but like I said above, it only lasted two model years. My guess is that it was too expensive to continue offering and/or it would be challenging to offer it along with the new column-mounted ignition interlock which debuted on Ford products in the 1970 model year.

    I would have sworn that was a 65 until I saw the advertising you showed for it. I thought the first year for the rectangular tail lights was 65. Learned something new on that. As for the antifreeze tank, my guess would be that it was an early attempt at a recovery reservoir like all cars have these days. Back in the early sixties, cars didn't have recovery reservoirs. They had a hose that ran from the radiator filler neck down the side of the radiator. So when you shut off the engine and the pressure relief valve built into the radiator cap opened, it spilled a little bit of antifreeze on the ground. Over time, the antifreeze level in the tank got too low.

    Love the Thunderbirds from '61 thru '66. Many people don't realize that these 'birds shared their platform and assembly plant with the Lincoln Continental. The tank with the radiator cap? Ford was among the first to add coolant overflow tank. Decades ago, when radiators were too full or very hot, the coolant overflow poured out on the ground. Eventually, people realized that dogs love to lap up spilled anti-freeze, and it can kill them. Keep up the fun vids.

    Man, I love so many cars it is always hard to pick a favorite but...the '64 - '66 Thunderbird (especially the '66 (428)) is a homerun car for me. If I had to choose only one car that I could have, '65 - '66 would be it. I left out '64 because of the disc brakes and sequential turn signals but if that was the only year of the 3, I would say yes. 1964 had, as you say, the name spelled out on the hood and the bird in the taillights and "Thunderbird" in between the taillights. That gave that year a special look which is hard to beat. I suppose you could convert the brakes over to front discs. I'd leave the turn signals as is. Thank you for this video and the reminder of how much I love these Thunderbirds! Oh, and thanks for the old commercial introduction of the car.

    My mom's sugar daddy gifted her a '64 Thunderbird in Samoan Coral (not the Landau), which, after watching your well-done video, was much better equipped than the one in the video. I loved sitting in the car by myself as a kid. It was like sitting in the cockpit of an aircraft. The car had almost every option offered: a/c of course, speed control, power seats/windows, door ajar/low fuel lights, emergency flashers, and all the ones in your video. Also cool were the variable-speed windshield wipers. When the speed control was engaged, you could control the speed with a dial. We took a cross-country trip in it from Fort Worth to Disneyland that year. I loved that car.

    Most beautiful example of this car, IMO, are the White/Black soft top '64/'65 versions which appeared in the Bond films Goldfinger and Thunderball. Would love to see/commission a restomod version with suspension, braking, drivetrain, paint and materials upgrades.

    Beautiful example! Remember admiring these as a little kid. Sexy interior esp with those rear coach seats. And watching their convertible tops go down was a beautiful sight. Thunderbird was unique from 1955 to 1962 vs it's competition, a pocket-sized powerful American luxury car. Studebaker had the GT Hawk & the Avanti but they were headed off the auto-manufacturing stage, unfortunately. Too bad that Road & Track and Motor Trend boys didn't like the soft suspension, those guys have been playing that broken record for 60 years because not enough US cars corner like a Aston Martin or Mercedes.

      I hope one day I can have the opportunity to compare this with a Gran Turismo hawk the Gran Turismo hawk is better in every way in my opinion and it’s amazing that more Thunderbird sold they sold I think it was almost 20 to 1 Thunderbirds I’m not entirely sure it might be more than that but it just blows my mind because the Studebaker was a far superior car in my opinion

    • @billolsen4360
      @billolsen4360 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@What.its.like. You're definitely right about that. It was public perception that killed Studebaker, the idea that all independent manufacturers would soon go bust as had happened to Packard, Hudson, Kaiser & Frasier in the recent past. It's funny that at the same time, VW, MG, Triumph, Mercedes and Jaguar were making inroads into the American market and Studebakers were just as well-built & engineered as most of those with better reliability. Public expectation of Studebaker's inevitable bankruptcy led to their sales crashing and income running lower & lower each year.

    Nice video on my 1st car...but the ONLY powerplant offered in 1965 was - again - the 390cid V8. Only in 1966 was there an engine option, a 428cid V8. The car was a bit ahead of its time, and the reason you top-off engine coolant in the little tank, is the same reason it is done today...it is a coolant recovery system design. No different that what my 2002, 2005, and 2007 model cars have. Except, of course, the fact that today's tanks are all plastic.

    I had a '64 Thunderbird and loved it. It had been pretty much abused by the time I got it, but it still was elegant and powerful. This was my favorite year of the Flairbirds (aka Jetbirds). The Landau option did not have a partial vinyl roof. It was a full vinyl roof with landau bars on the roof pillars. I now have 2 1966 Thunderbirds, one a convertible and one a Town Landau. I just love this generation. They made a few movie appearances, too. Romy Schneider drove a Diamond Blue convertible in Good Neighbor Sam. Dean Martin (as Matt Helm) drove a gold Town Landau (a twin to mine!) in Murderer's Row, and a white convertible made a very short appearance in Goldfinger. I really enjoyed this video and have subscribed to your channel.

    Actually 390 engines were the only engines available in 1965. Never a 427 in a T Bird. Those pre 1965 T birds and full sized Firds were horrible on brakes. They had lousy front ends and they plowed through corners! Good looking cars that didn’t hold a candle to the Buick Rivieras that they competed against. The one you featured is especially nice but it lacks air conditioning which is expected in a car of this caliber.

      I honesty think the most junk America produced car wise was in the 00 era 90s is pretty close as we’ll be the 00 was just depressing. Yes there are some cool cars to come out of that era but the plastics were worse then plastics used in kids toys from the 90s
      Worst car I ever owned 1996 Pontiac sunfire the lights where activated once one put car in drive, they were as bright as candles in jam jars. With the bright lights on I was able to see 5 maybe 10 feet in front of the hood it was slow got crappy gas mileage for 2.2 liter I will say it was great in the snow.. and the owner before me must have chain smoked in it could never get that smell out it was the worst in summer smell never came out, my friend in 2008 -09 somewhere in there bought a brand new colorado truck extended cab I don’t remember what he paid but that truck had 3 miles on it when he took me for a ride in it smelled like someone chain smoked in it for years just like the Pontiac sunfire but it was brand new (nothing against smokers, I’m not, don’t like the smell) I honestly think the Colorado especially first generation was a bad truck. Build quality materials were terrible. I think the engine Chevy put in those trucks used harden tempered plastic as valve guides... lucky for Chevy ford offered a truck that was just as bad stay away from 5.4 triton engine not worth it run away.
