Japanese history comes to life in this exciting and informative new movie starring the great Yakusho Koji as Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu must face his greatest foe, Ishida Mitsunari on the battlefield at Sekigahara. Based on Shiba Ryotaro’s three volume historical novel this movie brings to light many of the events leading up to this famed battle of destiny, and then portrays the action in the most realistic manner ever shown. A true masterpiece by noted filmmaker Harada Masato, depicting the quest for ultimate power in ruling Japan. As the two armies with combined troop strength of 180,00 men prepare, there are others on the sidelines waiting for a chance to pick one side or the other!

Everybody knows WW2, but Hollywood still makes war movies about WW2
And we would accept it if someone wanted to make a series abiut the events leading up to ww2 with out the main action
People always overlook the final battle that ended the Sengoku era: the siege of Osaka castle. The nhk taiga drama Sanadamaru portrays it well. I just wish that if they were gonna tell the story of Shogun, they finish it all the way up until The fall of the Toyotomi.
I agree
I guess the reason behind it is because Sekigahara is the battle that rose the Tokugawa from a normal dimyo to the most powerful clan in Japan.
So sekigahara really was a gamble for Ieyasu.
Whereas by the time the siege of Osaka took place, Toyotomi had lost most of its influence. So it really was siege where the result was pretty much decided before it began.
True, the story of Nobushige Sanada is a goated one.
Koji Yakusho is a veteran actor.
His career took off in 1983 because the taiga drama show “Tokugawa Ieyasu” needed to find a replacement actor for Oda Nobunaga after their first choice actor was too busy. Koji was just a nobody at that time so he got the role but because of his over-the-top energy, his Nobunaga became a fan favorite and Koji became an a-list actor in Japan ever since.
And it’s funny that both Koji Yakusho (Ieyasu in this movie) and Junichi Okada (Mitsunari in this movie) both had played as Oda Nobunaga in taiga drama about Tokugawa Ieyasu at some point in their life. Koji Yakusho in 1983 while Junichi Okada in 2023 (40 years after Koji) so this movie is simply Nobunaga vs Nobunaga.
I knew him from Shall We Dance (1996), then recently Perfect Days.
Good call! Sekigahara is a fun movie. Personally I didn't care if the Shogun TV series followed the book and I agreed with most of the changes they made (not all). I didn't think showing the battle would have made sense. I think the last episode was rightly focused on showing all the good that came of Mariko's sacrifice so showing the battle would have distracted from that narrative.
From a perspective of viewer who had no read the adaptations it was based on it did feel like the final episode was building towards even more to see, like a continuation to the story of Toranaga made sense in a new season.
Still a great show, one of the greats tbh.
The audio book of Shogun was enthralling. Mariko was a more substantial character in the book.
I'm listening to Clavells third book Gai-Jin. Good but not as good as Shogun

Nope. Still prefer the original! The reboot was woke!
Man, it was terrible. You know it. Clavell did SO MUCH building that turned into nothing at all. It was insane.
Let me tell you what happened. Guaranteed.
The publisher was freaking out about how long he was going and all the different storylines. They told him to wrap it up.
Some moron editor didn't understand multi part stories because this was the early 70's; so he wrapped it. I betcha anything theres an entire second half of the Shogun story somewhere. Unpublished and unseen. No writer does that much table setting for no reason. No way.
Since “Shogun” is completely fictional, the names and positions of the model characters have been changed, and the scenario differs from the historical reality. (For example, the Toda family is modeled on the Hosokawa family, but their positions, actions, etc. are very different. Fuji is a fictional character. etc.)
In the case of Japanese “jidaigeki” (historical dramas), the scenario is based on historical facts as much as possible, and entertainment effects and interpretations are often added to it. In recent years, there have been comedies such as “Kiyosu-Kaigi” (The Kiyosu Conference). Of course, there are “jidaigeki” works that are completely fictional, but most Japanese people can identify them. (Foreigners may not be able to).

No thanks to Kessen, whenever Sekigahara was mentioned. I keep thinking of Ishida yelling "The right is with me!" or Honda Tadakatsu "Let my Tonbogiri be your passage to hell!"
Shiba Ryotaro is a master at depicting turning points in Japanese history in the most dramatic and exciting way …
Saka no Ueno Kumo (Clouds above the hill) is another of his masterpieces
i had no idea about the movie for Sekigahara til now thanks
The samurai who assassinated Oda Nobunaga were.
Akechi Mitsuhide's (Mariko's father) theory of a direct motive and
Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) and
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taikoudenka) and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki, among other scheming theories.
The film「 Kubi」, directed by Takeshi Kitano, is based on the Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taiko Denka) theory. It is a very interesting film.
i been trying to watch Kubi for a while now, where is it available?
Well they just announced season 2 and 3
I only know about Sekigahara from playing Samurai Warriors lol.
Lol it was my first introduction too!
I knew it from Onimusha and Nioh! 🔥🔥🔥
@@twilight_mourner1865 oh interesting I didn't know Onimusha covered that subject. Tbf I've only played Demon Siege and Dawn of Dreams.
@@Dtzeo503 the best ones 😔👌
@@twilight_mourner1865 Yes the Nioh games are my all time faves.
Technically "Gai-Jin" would be the sequel to Shogun...Kinda...In a way...More of a sequel to Tai Pan really...But historically speaking you're not wrong. Also this film was great.
Shogun’s ending was prefect, the battle can not be shot because the show has changed so many things from history that in order to portray the battle so many other new characters need to be introduced.
Maybe we'll get it in season 2.
And Azumi 1 and 2 covers post battle of Sekigahara.
Very good movies too but I prefer Azumi 1 more.
最近、関ヶ原関連の動画に英語が増えたのは「shogun」の影響でしょうか?
9:34 While her level of plot armor in this film is enormous, the ones she (the actress Kasumi Arimura) had in Rurouni Kenshin and Dou Suru Ieyasu are practically non-existent. She got slashed in the back in Kenshin and slit her own throat in Ieyasu and in both cases, she dropped dead instantly.
And totally superior and straight to the point!
Do these movies come with English subtitles? Cause I would love to watch them but my Japanese is very poor.
Tokugawa Ieyasu is known to have employed the services of ninja during the events leading up to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Ninja, or shinobi, were skilled in espionage, sabotage, guerrilla warfare, and assassinations. They were often hired by samurai lords to gather intelligence, conduct raids, and carry out covert operations. One famous ninja associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu is Hattori Hanzō, who served as a samurai and ninja leader. so you see, showing Ninjas in Sekigahara is crucial to the story. They were even shown in the episode 9 of Shogun.
Thanks for bringing this to attention man. I agree with you on Shogun needing a bit more satisfying ending . . .
I'd love to watch this movie, tried to buy it in Japan but they only had Blu-ray copies (not much good on a zone free DVD player). Also Japanese releases are really not great for other langauage subtitles. A surprise given the there's usually about ten non-English options on Australian releases. Looks like Samuari DVD is my best option! Thanks for the great breakdown as always!
This was a good movie! I watched "Sekigahara" at the izakaya steaming on Amazon Japan Prime video.
Thanks for this movie recommendation. In Shogun, even though Torunaga has been 'presented' as the protagonist AND till the last moment, I rooted for him, I realised later it was all deceit, his ways are not samurai as he sought and succeeded to win the war by scapegoating and sacrificing all his near and dear ones mercilessly while meticulously saving his own hide. One could argue his methods closely follow Sun Tzu and if that was indeed a background, I'd be more accepting but Shogun was a Samurai story and what he did was not at all in line with Samurai doctrine. In the end I saw him as the wily antagonist. I will watch Sekigahara today and hope to feel refreshed.
Blood and gory excite. A tale retold may lose its lustre.
Samuraidvd! Got it, baby!❤
Enjoy!
This is how you adapt a book. Respect the author and the actual fans of the book. I wonder why Rings of Power seems to ignore something so basic and simple.
Because rings of power isn't adapting a book? There's no book that covers the second age in detail. The whole reason they chose that period is because of the freedom it gives them. Not saying what they did with that freedom was good but you can't accuse them of being failures at adaptation because there's nothing to adapt from that era
Question. You sent me a link before to this amazing DVD website, but I have a new phone, and lost my home page links. Did that make sense?😂. I had the site saved to my home screen, now it's gone. Would you be able to send me another link of that site, pretty please?
I agree with most of what you conclude with. As it was, I felt Shogun was quality, but was lacking in the end. Not by much, just enough to let me slightly down. But, I am not the audience alone, and I am happy that such topics and themes might come into focus again.
I'm just happy musashi miyamoto fought in sekigahara
Nah Siege of Osaka is the most im more hype.... The renew it for another 2 seasons so the battle of Osaka incoming
There is barely a battle in this movie, so if you watch it for the battle of Sekigahara you will be disappointed.
Are you joking? Have you even watched the movie? The battle goes on for about a third of the movie and very in depth and very lengthy. You're talking absolute bollocks
@@supremeworld87 You don't even see the conclusion of the battle. At the end it goes abruptly to afterwards. You should watch the movie again.
Nobunaga the great. The one with the idea to unify japan and almost make it.
Sekigahara show was decent.
More like Hillbilly Blues
Wait isnt Sekigahara fought before Blackthorne/William was shipwrecked?
oh man i saw this one,the only thing i remember is the scene where a korean captured POW joined into the rank blow himself up along with others as last stand
It just got green light for a second season guy. Don't you pay attention.
Your voice is so monotonous and crude. If you are gonna narrate or provide your opinions, you need to work on your delivery method. It was unbearable listening to your critique.
Sekigahara, released in 2017, is not very interesting as a movie.
Among works depicting the Battle of Sekigahara, the 2000 NHK taiga drama ``Aoi Tokugawa Sandai'' is more powerful and interesting, and is more faithful to historical trends.
Please also take a look at ``Aoi Tokugawa Sandai.''
日本の歴史は関ヶ原までは面白いが、関ヶ原以後の徳川政権をドラマにしても面白くないと思う。
いやいや、大河ドラマの「葵 徳川三代」は面白かったですよ。
rtw
日本人からしても観ても描写が変だとそこで鑑賞止める。忍は確かに人間離れしていたのは知ってるけど意味が違うしね。
Hardly works as a sequel since it makes out Ishida Mitsunari to be the good guy. Its portrayal of him is so counter to pretty much every piece of media about him thats its pretty bizarre
While it’s true that Ishida had some selfish motivations, he was definitely more so on the correct side of morality. Anyone can say what they want about him, but he was 100% committed to the family of the heir, unlike Tokugawa whom always had his eyes on the position of Shogunate himself.
To be honest he was one of the only honorable men of that time period
It's a shame then that he didn't win.
@@bushidoblues9302 Unfortunately, he was always seen as more of a bureaucrat than a warriors and so many wouldn’t respect him for that alone.
But you're acting like the Taiko ever had any kind of right to rule over Japan. He should have moved aside for Tokugawa after Nobunagas death as Tokugawas blood line meant he could be Shogun whereas Toyotomi was a jumped up peasant who made a grab for power after Nobunagas death.
There never should have been a taiko, had he moved aside then Tokugawa and his Shogunate could have come about alot earlier and his shogunare led to a lengthy period of peace in Japan. Toyotomi's heir was meaningless, as meaningless as his title of taiko that was only there because he couldn't be called shogun
@@supremeworld87 Bung Hideyoshi thought of many parties that would make Japan turbulent again, after Nobunaga's death Japan could have returned to the era of protracted civil war, Ieyasu could not do what Toyotomi Hideyoshi did, he could not even conquer Sanada's Ueda, nor could he defeat the Takeda Clan without the help of the Oda Clan. Do you think Ieyasu can conquer Japan like Toyotomi Hideyoshi?
