  • Mark, Daisy, and Jay head out into the Adirondack High Peaks to continue their journey to become ADK 46ers! In this video, the crew heads up Esther Mountain (4,239') and Whiteface Mountain (4,867') for numbers 25 and 26 of 46 High Peaks.
    These were the first two high peaks of 2019, and the trail was an excellent combination of steep ascents, deep mud, and awesome scrambles. Whiteface, the 5th tallest mountain in NY, is also a ski mountain with a very popular access road (Veterans Memorial Highway) to the summit. Once we reached the top, we were greeted by hundreds of people, warm sandwiches, and ice cold sodas!
    NOTE: it was recently brought to my attention (thanks Elie) that the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) does not allow folks to walk up/down the shoulder of Veteran's Memorial Highway while during business hours due to the increased risk this presents. I was unaware of this regulation, and I wanted to share it with you all as soon as I found out so you can make informed decisions! Be safe out there!
    Please consider subscribing to the ADK Woods Walker channel for weekly videos of Adirondack adventures!
    Don't forget to try and do something awesome every single day!

    Have you been on top of Whiteface Mountain? Did you get there on your feet or in a vehicle? Either way, the views on top were amazing on this beautifully clear day. Thanks for watching!

      I finished my 46R on Esther and Whiteface on September 17, 2017. I was lucky enough to have my son come along with me on that hike and turned out to be his first 2 high peaks and turned him into wanting to hike with dad.

      That's awesome! My kids love hiking with me, but my daughter (9) isn't interested in big mile days, and my son (14) isn't interested in waking up before the sun to drive 2 hours north for the hike ;)

      @@JayMorrisonOutdoors My son (16) doesn't have an issue getting up. It's tough finding the time with his and my daughter's (9) other activities that gets in our way. Check out this hiking challenge that seems very much family/kid friendly and doesn't require those very early mornings: www.adirondack.net/hiking/challenges/moriah-challenge/ I've been wanting to hit this one with my family but need to fins the time.

    23:00 Sorry, that's not a Lot of Mud, that's STANDARD Mud! I ended up doing this as two hikes (long story): Whiteface from the Reservoir, and later, Esther via Marble Mountain. Esther is very nice, and definitely underrated. My buddy Ferd, having trained in the Alps, simply went straight up the side of the highway retaining wall. I was looking for the super wet area on the ridge, after the Esther cutoff--maybe we were there in a wetter year (?) Nice vid, Good Climbing!

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. Do you keep mileage and time for your hikes? Just curious

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put together, what is affectionately called, "The Plan" for every hike that has the mileage on it, and I always estimate 1 MPH for the hike (usually it's less, but that affords us extra time to sit and enjoy the views). The actual mileage is usually pretty close to The Plan, and I do keep rough track of the actual time from car to car. For example, this hike was ~9.5 miles and we took 9 hours (car-to-car).

    I want to bring my kids up WF this summer, this will be our first. Are the trails marked pretty well or is it easy to get lost? Awesome video!!

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trails from the ASRC are well marked and easy to follow. If you are planning on doing Esther as well, just know that there aren't markers, but it's a very well worn and obvious path.
      Good luck and thanks for watching!

      Try not to leave some lf the less desirable hikes until the end of your journey. They're all beautiful in their own ways, but some of them are tough to stay motivated when you know the trail is a slog and there isn't a view on the summit ;)

      As of today, I have 10 more High Peaks left to climb before I become a 46er. Unfortunately, the pandemic's effect on the Adirondack region (and the world) in 2020 pushed my plans back a bit, but there's no rush - the mountains aren't going anywhere ;)

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had a nice sized black bear come out onto the Northville Placid Trail about 30 feet in front of me and John on Day 3 of that adventure. I haven't seen any rattlesnakes, but once when we were hanging out at the lean-to near Brown Mountain (in the Tongue Range), another hiker came up after us and mentioned that there was one sunning itself on the side of the trail - we just didn't see it! They're out there, but thankfully we have given each other enough space to avoid issues.
