Sir you always & I mean *ALWAYS* deliver quality lessons that make an old frustrated guitar player like myself sound reasonable. This channel & your old one are chock full of quality. Respect from Sydney Australia.
Great lesson. I thought this would be much harder. Of course in the song the organ does a lot of it. Truly one of the best rock songs ever. I remember when it came out and couldn’t get enough of it.
Thanks for sharing this one with us. A typical Petty tune - not particularly complicated but sounds so sweeeeeet, especially that little riff. Really enjoyed it!
I know I'm late af with this comment, but I appreciate the video. I love this song and think Petty and his band were underrated musicians. God job, I learned a new song tonight!
I watched most of this cover about 5 times before I realized there was a lesson here (normal for me to be slowww). Nice cover and good instruction! TY!
Excellent! Great tune - great tribute - great memories! I know that ended up only on Stevie's "Bella Donna" album, but I remember I made a Tom Petty compilation ages ago, and included it - so I have it in both places! Good job, James!
How has this video been out for two years... and not one like? Wait. I'm gonna fix that. C'mon people. Show some love. This is actually pretty good. (And a great song) 😊
I agree, TP & the Heartbreakers are one of the great ones. They keep it basic and true rock n roll. And when they think a song needs a certain tone they grab a fender or Gibson or ric etc to keep their tone basic and true. I learned so much over the years and will miss them Thanks James!
Thank you for the lesson. I would love to do a cover of this song. Since i have the shitiest voice in the universe! Hey if Tom Petty can hang with Dylan... Then me wrecking this song should be alright! Lmao
If I remember the story correctly Tom and Stevie wrote several songs together during this time and Tom said Stevie could do "Draggin'..." on her album on the condition he could do "The Pretender" (I think that was the song) for his album because he felt it was a stronger song than "Draggin'..." was.
Petty wrote it and had already recorded it for the Hard Promises album, complete with his own lead vocals. "Outsider" is the other song you're thinking of. Petty wrote it for Stevie, then took it back. Here's the whole story: americansongwriter.com/2016/02/behind-the-song-stevie-nicks-with-tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers/
Thank you Professor; I am 62 and have been watching your work for two years now. I am getting my gear outta da closet and back in my hands again.
That’s the whole idea of my channel!
Love it! Thanks! I've been on a Mike Campbell kick lately.
That was straight forward great lesson. What a banger guitar tune. Tom petty was bad to the bone
Another classic done beautifully - dancing across the same old chords and finding bold originality.
Well put

Tom made Stevie an honorary Heartbreaker.
Right on the mark! Great Job!
Link Wray had that riff long before the Doors. Rumble, 1957. Thanks for great lesson.

I don't have the like/dislike buttons activated for my videos. I'm not engaged in a talent contest, so I don't really see the point. :)
Thank you!

These are great as always but the timeliness adds to it. Thanks. (sad face emoji)
I believe the short traid lick is at the intro and the end, not the middle. Good lesson!

James, do you ever play a Fender -- strat or tele?
Watch enough videos and you'll see that he's got just about every guitar known to mankind. Tee shirts too.
Nice ! Almost nobody who covers this bothers to play the right chords.. I mean the G/B and Cadd9 :)
Just how many guitars have you got? .......Lovin' your work😃
Hi James. Just because I like to know. What pedals and amp did you use when recording this? r/ Jim.
That’s through a Peavey Vypyr 100.
Muy parecida la tonalidad a La ciudad de la furia
Thank you for the lesson. I would love to do a cover of this song. Since i have the shitiest voice in the universe! Hey if Tom Petty can hang with Dylan... Then me wrecking this song should be alright! Lmao
What amp??
Peavey Vypyr 100
Thank you, sounds great!! I have a friend that plays in a very good TP tribute band and I shared it with him!

"Insider" I think. Provides the title of the Hard Promises album. Who is that on the t-shirt?
