The 'Black Pyramid' on K2 is a small part of the route, shaped like the great pyramids at Giza- but, imagine climbing one of those, far steeper, often vertical, and over twice as tall... at @20,000 feet! I've had some friends that have climbed that high (though NOT on K2!), and they said that that altitude feels like trying to breathe through a straw, and when they got down to base camp, the air felt like it was breathing soup! (And their base camp was at like 16k feet!) I've never been higher than 14,400-ish feet (Mt. Rainier), I'm sure I could go a lot higher, but: I can't imagine being TWICE as high, on a slope TWICE as steep, with a 'you-fall-you-die' level of consequence... I'm an experienced climber, at least enough to know how exceptional this kind of mountaineering is!
This mountain shouldn’t be open to people, it’s way more dangerous than Everest and Everest should be shut down too. Those are the places that you should get close to, contemplate and go back, maybe write a song or a poem, cause it’s something so powerful… but never climb…

perhaps they are regarding K2's normal route , the polish line on K2 is harder than any off the ones you menitioned , theres a reason why its only been climbed once and never attempted again..... lets not forget K2's east and north face have never been fully climbed, rupal face has been climbed by 5 different routes that i know off minimum 5+ succeful attempts.
@@washburnb1 Ive heard about that route being attempted by a polish team but they turned around at 8400m, i didint know a american team just traversed to the normal abruzi route , yet i think that route was considered the north east ridge by looking at the line the proper east face has not been attempted directly, but its a shame these hard ascents get so little recognition i never even heard of that attempt till now, these days just going up normal routes with a gopro holding a fixed line is considered cool, its just clear that the old timers really did something in thes mountains no one takes risks anymore.

They all would pass. If you aren’t fit you’re not making it anywhere on the mountain. “Unfit” people would tire out from the slopes and the altitude before they could get anywhere.
@@Hugh-Glass Do you think some physically unfit climber could even make it to base camp? The altitude and steep slope would tire them out immediately. The climbers that reach those summits are all at least somewhat fit. Some climbers are more fit than others, but there is a high standard of fitness required if you want to make it anywhere. Most “unfit” people probably can’t even hike the height of Everest if it was laid out on a gradual incline.

It's like any sport or job that is arduous and it doesnt happen overnight. Unless you are disabled you could likely attain the strength and endurance required. I've read stories about unfit (for climbing) "vacationers" being tugged up the hill by Sherpa teams and I wonder how they crossed the flow in the first place. When I was a teen I did roofing work all summer between classes, I would carry 2 bundles of shingles up a ladder, walk it across a sloped roof and place them accordingly to be installed by the waiting mechanics, I didn't realize until after I was in engineering school that each of those bundles were 85lbs, 2 of those were 20 lbs heavier than i was at a soaking wet 150lbs. I joined the army at that level of capability and got much stronger. I know all about conditioning and body mechanics. The only climbers that I view as "capable" are the ones who could make it up and back on their own, without any base camps, that probably seems harsh but if someone carries you or your gear are you really even climbing? How long do you suppose before there is a Hilton atop Everest? Lol

We'd climb these huge mountains w/ full gear....I was around 24 years old and in the best shape of my life and I thought this was the most physically brutal training - I cant even imagine climing mt everest at 50 years old. No way in hell would i make it past the first base camp 🤣

Getting adequate sleep is such a problem In mountaineering! I feel it’s one of the most overlooked factors.
At such an extreme level of exhaustion,one might think crashing for awhile would be easy. Nah!
