- Mario Del Monaco in Aida in Tokyo in 1961 singing "Celeste Aida". He is obviously struggling this night so please take that into account before making a negative comment. This is one of the most difficult arias in the rep.
He seems ill. Still heavenly singing. And what a handsome Radames!

Si è risparmiato. Avrà avuto i suoi motivi. Ma che importa. Ne ha fatte di esibizioni spettacolari dell'AIDA. E comunque è sempre emozionante ascoltarlo e vederlo. Notasi anche se è stanco e fa un po' di fatica, la sua voce non cede ne di timbro ne di volume ne di tono. Ne anche con le cannonate lo butti giù. Pure con 2 di pressione, l'acuto sfolgorante ci scappa sempre.
Vallo a dire a questi che scrivono senza cognizioni di causa.

The measure of the truly greats is how they sing on their "off" nights. For Del Monaco, this is perhaps slightly below form, but for any of the current crop of Verdi Tenorini this would be a gala evening.
...even in "bad shape" he sings more secure than many others you can hear on youtube. Just here the last "sol". Do we know a present/today tenor with that Power?

@@Valentino_Cammarelle Sure he can sing and act but not resonant, free nor beautiful, and the fact that his technique is not operatic based on my standard. Papasodero is a great lyric/leggero tenor i like him, I'm looking forward to his success.
@@mariofilippeschi4855 Not resonant? His voice was full of squillo. Corelli said that MDM's voice was ''molto squillante''. I saw MDM at Carnegie Hall 1962 and his voice was large and resonant. He was better in the house than on recordings. Del Monaco was a master of his complicated technique, using the Melocchi Method that other tenors used like Limarilli, Cecchele and Giacomini. MDM had impeccable diction, endless breath, and a beautiful masculine quality of voice. His non operatic technique stayed with him for a 35 year career. Leggero tenor's are not suited to sing Aida.

La Sua voce,è tipicamente Verdiana ma,non possiamo confrontarlo al grande Mario Del Monaco.
La voce di MDM era unica oltre che potente.
Poi,ognuno è libero di criticare e ascoltare chiunque.
L'unica critica,la faccio ai critici colti,quelli,che vanno sempre dove soffia il vento,ovvero,burattini dei discografici.
Bergonzi dopo averlo ascoltato,fa venire la voglia di ascoltare un tenore...

@@Carlskwell I vaguely remember a story of how Bergonzi sang it as composed in Verdi's birthplace instead of blasting out the last note. He was booed and he vowed never to sing there again. Possibly true. Also, the near-legendary story of Gobbi actually sounding as though he was dying in - was it Ballo in Maschera? - He did it "straight" on the first night to much applause, but brought the house down the next night when he faded away on the last note. Not that opera singers regularly avoid showing off instead of singing the high notes loud, but there are some wonderful exceptions.
@@davidgould9431 Dear David, Bergonzi actually cracked on the diminuendo off the last B-flat in the aria. He was a fine singer and tenor but did have an opaque top with an absence of squillo. The only tenor I can recall doing a diminuendo impressively & successfully off the last B-Flat was Franco Corelli and he was born with the mezza voce and diminuendo. I don't believe it's a failure for not singing the B-flat diminuendo off the last Bflat in this aria. Many great and good tenors have also taken liberties with the music in live performances.

If you actually listen to, or are lucky enough to see "Live" not studio recordings, Mr Del Monaco very much sounded and acted like the above video. Its not Bel Canto singing or technique displayed, but a Heroic Tenor Style. The Lowered Larynx technique Del Monaco and even Franco Correli used made for a very powerful sound. The technique was not the best for delicate sound or long slower phrasing, but man can you produce Power!

There are many things said here about his problems that seem to me correct. But one other thing should also be pointed out. Even if a tenor is in excellent voice figuring out how to manage the phrase through the passaggio ‘Celeste Aida, forma divina’ is a big problem. Even Corelli could not always do it and often flatted, which was not at all a fault of his singing normally.
I think, if you see carefully, he had a cough here, or something like that.
Para mim a melhor gravação de Aída é de Gigle com Maria Caniggia , também com Dino Bechi. O Del Mônaco é o melhor em Il Trovador Otello and Lá Forza del Destino. Insuperável a Voz com a Orquestra. Torna-se mais um Instrumento adicionado a Orquestra e o Casamento com as outras vozes. Não posso esquecer em André et Chenier de Giordano.
Ha stranamente qualche difficoltà nella distribuzione del fiato. In ogni caso, anche se inferiore al suo abituale standard, la prestazione è dignitosa.

una vez mas Corelli aunque alargue las notas , muy sperior añ maestro Del Mónaco, para quien la sutileza no existe.
Sono d'accordo in parte con il suo commento...la prima parte di Aida e il finale dell'opera,sono più liriche a livello vocale e di conseguenza una voce più duttile interpreta meglio...per il resto dell'opera Del Monaco è un Radames eroico e perfetto!!! Tornando a questa performance, Mario esegue con incertezza fiati corti e poco fraseggio...gli acuti sono folgoranti...tuttavia l'ho sempre ascoltato meglio che in questa performance...saluti
@31122051 Domando scusa ma un tenore con una tecnica BUONA non è in grado di cantare l' "Esultate" legando "Dopo l'armi lo vinse l'uragano" come faceva il maestro Del Monaco anche dopo 30 anni di carriera, sostenendo una voce decisamente enorme per 21 secondi netti senza calare di una virgola...
Dire che IL discepolo di Arturo Melocchi aveva una tecnica "buona" e inferiore di una spanna a quella di Corelli mi pare decisamente eccessivo.

Del Monaco always had an A class solid dramatic tenor instrument but even the most dramatic needs to stay discipline and in shape, especially with this demanding aria that so heavy everywhere.

I believe he was a last minute substitute for another singer, so that has to be taken into consideration.

Io,purtroppo non ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltarli dal vivo però, molti dei quali hanno ascoltato i due grandi tenori,hanno asserito che dal vivo,era come ascoltarli in un disco.Non facevano nessuna piega.

Tough aria because you have to sing it right away and most singers warm the voice up to their highest notes before the show. But now in this opera you have to go sing those Low notes right after you have stretched your voice, its really hard.

Del Monaco qui è in crisi vocale(che si riscontra anche in molti momenti dello Chenier eseguito sempre a Tokyo).Del Monaco non cantava Aida da parecchio tempo e mi risulta che avesse sostituito un collega.Perciò aveva meno tempo per riposare tra le recite di Chenier e Pagliacci.Dopodichè le difficoltà nei Fa naturali(emessi "aperti")fanno si' che risultino calanti d'intonazione.
Come ho scritto altre volte,a mio avviso,il VERO Del Monaco è tale fino al 1959/1960.Gloria al grande MARIO!!!!!

@federic017 beh probabilmente è stata una scelta di repertorio. Molti criticano MDM per il fatto che interpretava con assiduità un numero ridotto ruoli, ma a mio modo di vedere questo è stato il suo più grande punto di forza: concentrarsi sulle opere più adatte alla sua vocalità e diventarne il Re. Lo si può criticare finchè si vuole ma sfido chiunque a trovare, ad esempio, un Otello o un Canio migliori e non sto a tirare fuori la canzone napoletana...
Del Monaco era grandissimo in Sansone e Dick Jhonson...
Adoro Mario del Monaco,ma penso che in questa Aida abbia cantato male...fiato corto,acuti non controllati e altro ancora....comunque puo sempre capitare anche ai piu grandi di avere una serata storta!!!!

I have a Cd of very old recordings of Verdi arias with Del Monaco, where the orchestra has a very low volume; his vocals are still phenomenal.
This performance is poor indeed, but does not set his standard, at all.
Still I can't get what people detest in this recording... Bflats are good. No reverb on this rec, that's the point - the voice does't sound as splendid as at other recordings, which production was controlled by MDM himself.

HammondDER Im a huge fan of MDM and I think this recording is pretty bad other than the b-flats. He is singing here as if he is anxiously waiting to sing the high notes and just skimming the middle and lower sections of the music. His mid and low voice seem pretty weak, high notes still phenomenally powerful. I would definitely say it was an off night for him or that he was getting too eager to sing the high notes

Actually, this late recording is also made with Japanese audio technics, but MDM sounds here much like on the Western recordings. (but still it is not his best, he is quite old here)
He probably was ill, when he peformed in Tokyo in 1961 years. (you even can hear a hint of wheeze in his voice here)

sono d'accordo con lei che questa non è certamente una stupenda esecuzione: fiati corti, vocale non sulla giusta nota per potere prendere di corsa un fiato che urge e quant'altro..... tuttavia le chiedo dove lei sente la stecca, poichè io non ne ho sentite nella maniera più assoluta. per cortesia mi dica dove Mario stecca.
L' ho ascoltata tre volte e non ho sentito la stecca. Che non sia stata la sua migliore esecuzione è palese

"Besserwissers" are here I can see! The Right operasinging stopped when directors wanted "filmstar bodies" on stage! Before that, the Wienna school, don´t sing too loud, it coul´d damage your voice etc...What is needed and wanted in operas from Verdi, Wagner etc. is the full voice, otherwise you can´t hear it out in the crowd! C'mon people, yall might love del Monaco but it is clear he was way off on this one. We all know he has the 'high' notes; it is his singing in the lower register and passagio that's horrible. He has grave aire problems, a side from the fact that his legato is so bad he sounds like a cow in several instances as he passes through the notes. Anyhow, this aria is crazy difficult; it is incredible that the easiest parts to many are in fact the most problematic for del Monaco, and vice versa.

Non mi piace Del Monaco, la sua voce non ha corposità, robustezza, solo note alte. Preferisco di gran lunga e senza alcun dubbio Carreras, Corelli, Di Stefano...
Blimey! What a terrible director! Made him look like he couldn't act (to be fair to the director, I haven't seen much of MDM with pictures). Sounds like he's got a cold or a cough: he aspirates throughout - "Ai-h-ida"; "tu se-hi" and others. Not his best effort. And can't read music: there's a diminuendo on the last note. Bergonzi refused to perform in Verdi's birthplace (I think it was) after he performed the aria as written and the audience booed. Good on him! MDM wasn't doing anything unusual, but it wasn't, perhaps, artistically sensitive to the intentions of the composer. [tl;dr] loud and boring.
In fact, this is bad singing. del Monaco was off in the late 50s and early 60s unfortunately.
