My older brother had Raw and Delirious on cassette tapes back in the the day and when he was not at home I would sneak a listen to them. Those were Eddie Murphy gold.
Beverly Hills Cop 3 was ok. I did see it a second time in which I liked it more. However a better movie is Metro. He still has some comedic chops here but plays it more serious here. It is way better BC3.
_"Only a man...who's heart is pure, can wield the knife. And only a man...who's ass is narrow, can get down these steps. And if mine is such an ass...then I shall have it."_
Eddie Murphy was offered the role that was eventually filled by Bill Murray in Ghostbusters (the names of the characters changed), but he turned it down to do this film instead.
Damn i miss the 80's. As a young pre-teen i grew up with the likes of Beverly Hills Cop, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, A-Team, Knight Rider... great times.
Midnight Run is an under-appreciated Brest movie. DeNiro and Grodin make an unlikely pair, but they work together beautifully. And John Ashton (Taggart) plays a great, but very different character. An 80s action-comedy with heart
A few fun facts about this film, Eddie Murphy was originally going to be in Ghostbusters but bowed out to be in this at the last minute. A good choice for Murphy because this lunched his career. Fun fact two: Sylvester Stallone originally had this part but wanted to take it in a different direction which didn't match the vision of the film makers, so he left the project and took those ideas of what he wanted to do and made Cobra, which is as tonally different from Beverley Hills Cop as you can get.
Shaneel: "Two shots in the back of the head... execution style." Er, something you want to tell us, Shaneel? What exactly DID you do before you made this channel? ;) This flick seemed to come out of nowhere and blew up that year. This and Trading Places really helped cement Eddie's genius comic timing for a worldwide audience (and those that may have missed his time on SNL and his stand-up). Even the soundtracks numerous tracks were getting lots of airplay.
Great reaction and this is one of my all time favourite movies, I saw it in America when I was 17, I'm English and 52 now but I still love this movie. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic movie and you have to watch it, no self respecting film critic can say they are a film buff unless you've seen it! Judge Reinhold (Billy) also starred in a film called Vice-Versa, an age swapping movie which is worth a watch. Tom Hanks also did a movie of the same genre called "Big" which is also a good film. It was one of his first movie roles if not his first. Both just fun movies!!
Hi Shan, there's a great Martin Brest film called Midnight Run starring Robert DeNiro as a bounty hunter. Tons of action and comedy and also a lot of heart. Plus I haven't see any other reaction channels do it.
Soundtrack of famous songs: Neutron Dance - Pointer sisters, The Heat is On - Glen Frey, New Attitude - Patti Labelle, and Nasty Girl - Vanity 6 (Prince).
Another fun movie I highly recommend by Martin Brest is Midnight Run with Robert De NIro and Charles Grodin. It's very similar to Beverly Hills Cop with the mix of action and comedy.
Another movie with Eddie Murphy a couple years earlier is "48 hours" (1982), which I think was his film debut, he plays alongside Nick Nolte. Check it out if you have a chance :) Watching the scenes with Taggart, I remember him in "Midnight Run" (1988), starring Robert DeNiro and Charlos Grodin, another one I would recommend. :)
I was one of 3 Location Managers on the film. The opening sequence was filmed in Detroit, and Directed by Tom Wright, a 2nd Unit Director... a fabulous job! Martin Brest, who was the original Director on WarGames directed and to his credit, brought the best out of Eddie. Originally, the film was for Sylvestor Stallone but he was guided by his mother who was an astrologer who said he shouldn't do it if it started in a certain month...so he left the project.. When Eddie became attached, the writers re-wrote the script for humour which the previous script lacked. Brest recognized Eddies ability to improvise and got repeated 'takes' from Eddie...much of what was improvised. All scenes of Eddie in Detroit were filmed in Los Angeles...using a double in Detroit. There were a lot of rewrites on the film so the crew had little clue about whether the final film would be funny. Eddie was full of himself in those days and kept to himself rather than associate with the crew...not that he was a jerk, but chose to ignore the crew...which didn't endear himself to people. The producer, Jerry Bruckheimer deserves a lot of credit for the music and editing...he knew how to make it a fast paced film. The exteriors for the mansion were filmed in Rustic Canyon (Pacific Palisades) because it is part of Los Angeles where the noise was more tolerated than in Beverly Hills...the interior of the mansion was filmed at another mansion in the hills of West Hollywood. It wasn't an easy going set and had the feeling of always going off the rails...but didn't. The fast pace directing and Eddie's performance was pivotal to making this a classic. -Robert Decker, Location Manager
Midnight Run by Brest is the first one you need to see. It's a classic. This was right in the middle of Eddie's golden era. Eddie was amedy god at this point. I think he was 19 when he saved SNL singlehandedly (some say Joe Piscapo helped but.. nah), then for the next 4 or 5 years he was unstoppable... 48 Hours, Trading Places, Delirious (concert film), and This movie one after the other.. all big hits. I think "The Golden Child" in 85 was his first dud. He was gonna be in Ghostbusters.. but that role ended up going to Ernie Hudson. That would have been interesting but I think Eddie would've tried to steal the show too much.
Dude. You mentioned Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Yes, it's a great film. But it made me think of The Sting, a film starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman which is unbelievably, amazingly great! If you haven't seen The Sting then you MUST watch it. SO DAMN GOOD!! But, yeah, Butch Cassidy is also great, so you should watch it. WATCH THE STING!!
Meet Joe Black is a stunning film, I was going to use some more adjectives to describe it but feel they could be a spolier as this is a film that is worth going in blind on. That’s how I first saw it, as despite liking The leading actors it wasn’t something that appeal from the movie poster. I finally caught it years later on TV and even though I’d missed. The first 20 minutes or more I was captivated, in no small part to the amazing score by Thomas Newman.
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is DEFINITELY worth watching on the channel! Paul Newman and Robert Redford are the most iconic duo ever. And if you react to "Butch Cassidy", then you also have to react to "The Sting" afterwards-- Newman and Redford team up again with the same director, George Roy Hill. Both amazing movies. Also, other Martin Brest films to check out are "Scent of a Woman", "Midnight Run" (with De Niro and Charles Grodin, has a similar tone to "Beverly Hills Cop") and "Going in Style" (one of his first films, a very underrated comedy). Also, "Beverly Hills Cop 3" is crap. "BHC 2" is not very good either, some like it. Probably not worth reacting to.
0:20 - absolutely worth watching, specially Scent of a Woman with fantastic Al Pacino. Brest also make great but underrated action comedy Midnight Run with Robert De Niro.
Midnight Run is an all time favorite of mine! I recently found out there was at least one made for TV sequel. That isn't as good, but it was made for tv.
Love this movie! Did you know this was supposed to be a much more darker and serious action adventure film with Sylvester Stallone? That's right. He was offered the role of Axel Foley, but turned it down when the screenwriters had a falling out with him. The action scenes were used in another movie with Stallone, COBRA.
"48 Hours" is my personal Eddie Murphy fav film starring also Nick Nolte . As for Martin Brest other films like Scent of a Woman" , its intense -- Al Pacino gives a powerful performance that's on the verge of frightening as a very angry, depressed man. The performance earned Pacino his first Oscar. "Midnight Run" is probably Brest's best work starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in an action, comedic, buddy cop film, my fav next to buddy cop, action dark comedy "48 Hours" which wasn't directed by Martin Brest.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a masterpiece. One of the greats. One of William Goldmans best scripts, has a legendary soundtrack, two stellar performances by Redford and Newman and director Roy Hill is at his peak. This and The Sting are absolute musts.
I remember seeing this movie in theatre at the age of 6. Some older kids from my neighbourhood took me in, telling my parents that they would take care of me and we would visit a specials holiday-kids-theatre in a nearby town. :)
Last one, LOL: The role of Axel Foley was written for - wait for it - Sylvester Stallone. The film was originally supposed to be a drama, but Eddie Murphy became a HUGE star with "48 Hrs", so his name was floated. He took the role, it became a comedy, and his fantastic improvisational skills ended up changing the dialogue because what he came up with was so much better. :D
Thanks for another great video Shan! Beverly Hills Cop was a super huge hit when it came out, across audiences. To the point that it was widely regarded as a cornerstone movie of the time. And beyond its own success as a film, it also slammed an already popular (and already niche superstar) Murphy into that solidified iconic general audience superstar "it guy" status. BHC also was a specific blend of comedy, action, and drama cop movie that really exploded as a popular and successful template in the 80's and beyond. Murphy had already been part of tinkering with this formula 2 years earlier in "48 Hrs." (48 Hours), but BHC slightly rebalanced that comedy-action-drama formula into a more general audience and fun tone that has been repackaged and sold ever since. (though notably we continue to see films that play with changing that ratio of comedy-action-drama) Comedy-Action-Drama cop films have been a great launch vehicle for many actors. In large part because it is a familiar and fun genre that will get lots of people to watch, a type of film that really sportlights its star(s) performances, and a film that provides a proof of concept for its stars being able to nail comedy, action, and drama performances. Sometimes it puts an actor on the map, sometimes it just shows an already known actor can handle a genre they weren't yet known for, sometimes it just reboots interest in an actor, etc.
Bronson Pinchot (Serge) was such a scene stealer here that he was given a starring role in the TV series Perfect Strangers (1986 - 1993) that ran for 8 seasons.
"Axel F" pops up in the most unexpected places sometimes. I was at a farmers' market recently. They had some guy playing live music on trumpet with some sort of electronic accompaniment, and at one point he started playing "Axel F". Not a great rendition, but it was the one thing I recognized.
Other classics : The Great Escape Dirty Dozen And some more recent classics Snatch Training Day Classic comedies : Office Space Super Troopers Clerks Always enjoy your intelligent breakdown, and thoughts on the entire movie, as a whole. Lookin forward to seeing more of your content.
Butch Cassidy is definitely worth a watch and also 'The Sting' also starring Redford and Newman also directed by George Roy Hill is another worthy film.

You gotta watch Beverly Hills Cop 2. It is a worthy sequel. Billy and Sarge return and we get to see more background and development for them. Great video as always.
Midnight Run is another fantastic Martin Brest comedy. I don't really know what happened to Brest. His movies gradually got longer and less funny, and then he apparently torpedoed his career with Gigli! Okay, Gigli was a pretty poor movie, but it's crazy that it came out in 2003 and he never worked again.
Great reaction. Thank you. 😊 Billy was played by Judge Reinhold.. You gotta see two of his best films... Fast times at Ridgemont High, and Ruthless People... If you haven't seen those... Great movies..
Another truly underrated Cop-film by Eddie was Metro. It co-starred Michael Wincott who played Top Dollar (the big bad) in The Crow. Another great film by Eddie is The Golden Child. Finally, as others have said, the 48 Hours movies were right up there. As for Butch and Sundance, fantastic film on every every level. If you haven't seen it I'd also suggest Three Days of the Condor with Robert Redford and Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman. Some other greats from the same time-frame include The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood and The Parallax View with Warren Beatty.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic western starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford who were considered one of the great duos in film history. You definitely need to watch it.
Great reaction and review! This was the first film with Murphy at the top of the bill, and he really knocked out of the park. Beverly Hills Cop II has him back to take on a bunch of robbers and gun runners who've targeted a friend of his. In that sense, it's much like the first film, with a lot of the same elements - just on a grander scale, with more stunts, stars and a much flashier style. However, its overall tone is less lighthearted and the cinematography is classic late-'80s Bruckheimer, which can get in the way of the performances and a be oppressive at times. Still, while not quite as fun as the first film, it's definitely worth a watch, even on your channel. You'll be able to contrast it with the first film quite readily. Do NOT waste your time with the third film, especially on your channel. The story (dealing with criminals at a Disney-like theme park), sight gags and action scenes are all lousy. Murphy's performance is particularly lethargic and played way too safe, missing much of the cheeky dazzle of the first two films. It's barely watchable.
So glad to see you react to this, such a fun movie and unashamedly 80’s. The other are not quite as good and there are some weird changes to characters, but still pretty fun to watch
The second film from 1987 was pretty good as well. The director in that one was Tony Scott, but it still kept the epic "Axel F" theme by Harold Faltermeyer. The third from 1994, however, was a different story. Even with John Landis directing, Faltermeyer's theme didn't return, so the music was done by Nile Rodgers, who was previously a guitarist for disco band Chic.
Good luck deciding on which Eddi Murphy movie is the best. You'll need it. By the way, the music was a breakthrough in digitizing music for the computer back then on the legendary Commodore C64. Just to be clear, the music existed first done with a synthesizer, then programmed, yes, programmed (if I remember right) on the C64. We were so proud at the achievement of our computer.
Inspector Todd (I think that was his name) who reamed Murphy out in the beginning was a real Detroit police commander. The early parts of the movie were filmed in Detroit.
I LOVE this movie. It's got the humor that you would expect from an Eddie Murphy film but it's also got the grit of a Clint Eastwood film which is a hard formula to concoct

@@scottjo63 The interrogation skit where Conway plays a Nazi with a hand puppet trying to get information from a POW is probably legitimate torture as the other actor tries to keep from cracking up.
The guy who plays Taggart is in another great film called Midnight Run, starring Robert De Niro. Highly recommended.
This movie so many great things, after the stripclub arrest, Foley makes a speech about the officers being "Supercops" was entirely adlib you can see all the actors start to crack up laughing during the speech.
Yep when someone's hand goes up to cover their face. Watch some of Carol Burnett videos, the bloopers on TH-cam, Harvey Korman was very experienced with that mostly with Tim Conway, (who also has some movies under his belt with Don Knotts. Harvey Korman too, Blazing Saddles, and High Anxiety, a take on Hitchcock movies).
@@scottjo63 Judge was pinching himself to stay in character. You can see him sweating bullets and turning bright red. After the shot he had a bad bruise. He looked like he had to go to the bathroom. But he is desperately trying not to crack up.
Butch and Sundance is worth watching, yes.
Definitely
Great movie. Eddie Murphy is great and was at best in the 80s. You should watch the sequel Beverly Hills Cop 2 and skip the third movie which is horrible. I also recommend the movie Golden Child. Also I know its not stuff for a reaction video but I highly recommend for you personally to see Eddie Murphy old stand up shows Raw and Delirious they are hilarious
@@MrDabulls23 Goonee, goo goo
The Golden Child is one of my favorites of Eddie's.
Murphy would be blacklisted for raw and delirious now but yes it is funny as hell
Glad you've got round to these films. If you haven't seen it you should watch The Golden Child. Eddie Murphy at his funniest 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the recommendation!
Seconding The Golden Child, juxtaposing Murphy with the fantasy adventure genre is genius!

@@PhantomFilmAustralia lol. A great line from the film. One of many 👍👍👍
12:38 - Richard Pryor was Murphy's stunt double ?
Eddie Murphy was offered the role that was eventually filled by Bill Murray in Ghostbusters (the names of the characters changed), but he turned it down to do this film instead.
Not a bad career choice if you ask me
And the original actor they wanted for this movie was in fact Sylvester Stallone.
The amazing thing is back then you could watch two iconic movies like Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop debut in the same summer.
@@thewiseoldherper7047 that is incredibly true.
BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID is my favorite western, and it stand up to time very well.
"Guns or Knives Butch?"
Also, Beverly Hills Cop edged out Ghostbusters to be the No. 1 movie of 1984.
48 Hours and Another 48 Hours are excellent films as well!
your description of this movie was perfect " that was a great time " that describes the 80s pretty much as far as movies go for sure thanks again !
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is definately worth watching!
"You know. . I think that would be best. " Cannot tell you how many times I have quoted that.
Meet joe black is an excellent movie.
The film's screenplay was nominated for an Oscar that year. Eddie Murphy was allowed to adlib a few scenes as well.
Shaneel: "Two shots in the back of the head... execution style."
Er, something you want to tell us, Shaneel? What exactly DID you do before you made this channel?
;)
This flick seemed to come out of nowhere and blew up that year. This and Trading Places really helped cement Eddie's genius comic timing for a worldwide audience (and those that may have missed his time on SNL and his stand-up). Even the soundtracks numerous tracks were getting lots of airplay.
Seeing this in the theater in 1984 was a tremendous experience. Every time I rewatch it I remember the audience reactions.
Other classic Murphy films worth checking out are “48 Hours” and “The Golden Child”.
The Golden Child 👍
Agree awesome film
🎶Iiiiii want the knife 🎶.... 🎶pleeeease 🎶
It's hard to go wrong with any older Eddie Murphy film.
_"Yo, Teddy can kiss my ass!"_
Your laugh is the best part of your reactions, it gets me going every time lol
Loved the reaction, another Martin Brest film to watch is Midnight Run, that one was a classic I recommend watching it Shan
Jonathan Banks with hair is like a curse, I'm used seeing him old, dressed in all black, bald and packing a gun.
And someone even Eddie Murphy could not even handle.
National Lampoon Vacation is funny AF. It's the best of the Vacation flicks.
Soundtrack of famous songs: Neutron Dance - Pointer sisters, The Heat is On - Glen Frey, New Attitude - Patti Labelle, and Nasty Girl - Vanity 6 (Prince).
I was very impressed when you knew who Jerry Bruckheimer was. I'm a huge fan of his flicks. Especially the ones from the late 80s through the 90s.
Another fun movie I highly recommend by Martin Brest is Midnight Run with Robert De NIro and Charles Grodin. It's very similar to Beverly Hills Cop with the mix of action and comedy.
Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot) was amazing as Serge in this movie!!
Whatever happened to that guy?
@@unclerojelio6320 Comedy shows, voice acting and guest starring roles in movies and tv shows, I think.
I highly recommend Beverly Hills Cop 2 another great story and it shows just how far Axl Taggart and Billy's friendship have grown
Another movie with Eddie Murphy a couple years earlier is "48 hours" (1982), which I think was his film debut, he plays alongside Nick Nolte. Check it out if you have a chance :)
Watching the scenes with Taggart, I remember him in "Midnight Run" (1988), starring Robert DeNiro and Charlos Grodin, another one I would recommend.
Great 80s Soundtrack !
I'll add it to the list Dan!
You should check out 48 hrs with Murphy and Nick Nolte
Beverly' Hills cop is a great movie. Great reaction and comments.
And, yes, you have to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.
“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” is definitely worth reacting to. Also highly recommend “The Sting”
Yes, another comment pointed it out! Thanks for the trivia Shaine!
This movie was why Eddie Murphy wasn't able to do 'Ghostbusters' so they got Ernie Hudson instead to play Winston
Didn't know that. Was the right call, while Ghostbusters was an equally great movie, this was a much better part for an actor.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a masterpiece. One of the greats. One of William Goldmans best scripts, has a legendary soundtrack, two stellar performances by Redford and Newman and director Roy Hill is at his peak. This and The Sting are absolute musts.
Your selection of movies is just fun to watch! And that one is a true classic of comedic action. Eddie Murphy in his prime.
(though notably we continue to see films that play with changing that ratio of comedy-action-drama)
Comedy-Action-Drama cop films have been a great launch vehicle for many actors.
Other classics :
The Great Escape
Dirty Dozen
And some more recent classics
Snatch
Training Day
Classic comedies :
Office Space
Super Troopers
Clerks
Always enjoy your intelligent breakdown, and thoughts on the entire movie, as a whole.
Lookin forward to seeing more of your content.
Burch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is great. So is the Sting. Highly recommended.
9:32 As someone born and raised in the Cleveland suburbs, I've always found this joke hilarious.
Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a worthy sequel I suggest as well
Definitely, just as good IMO. But the 3rd one, definitely skippable.
Second one is my personal favorite out of the series.
Action is certanly better in the second one.
@@preacher3670 the second one has the woman that played Dolph Lundgren’s wife in Rocky 4
Watch "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid"..."Cool Hand Luke " Too!
Butch Cassidy is definitely worth a watch and also 'The Sting' also starring Redford and Newman also directed by George Roy Hill is another worthy film.
It's been so long beginning of your video I was contemplating *Beverly Hills Cops 2* took me a minute to realize you should definitely do that one next
Hi Shan! I like your reaction! This was a very good film! Please watch Groundhog Day with Bill Murray!
Another great Eddie Murphy movie : "Life" from 1999 together with Martin Lawrence !
Highly underrated
Great reaction. Thank you. 😊 Billy was played by Judge Reinhold.. You gotta see two of his best films... Fast times at Ridgemont High, and Ruthless People... If you haven't seen those... Great movies..
The origin of what will eventually become Balki Bartokomous! Don't be ridiculous! Also, "Look, man, I ain't fallin' for no banana in my tailpipe!"
You're on a roll with these movies! Keep it up. Great to see your perspective as always.
Scent of a Woman is a MUST!!! Do not miss that movie.
That was a great review from you. I greatly enjoyed watching this movie along with the latter two Beverly Hills Cop movies.
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid is a classic great film! Paul Newman (Butch) and Robert Redford (The Sundance Kid) are a hilarious team. Highly recommend it. Classic line from the film: "Who are those guys?"
it's always a joy watching you watch those old movies and see you enjoy them and laugh whole heartedly.
i like the whole trilogy of beverly hills cop, although the amazingness does decline, i think they're worth watching and lots of fun!
Director cameo: At the end of the movie when Axel is checking out of the hotel, Martin Brest plays the desk clerk that takes his room key.
Definitely watch Beverly Hills Cop part 2! We'll pretend part 3 never happened. Watch Murphy in 48 Hours, Another 48 Hours, and The Golden Child! YES, watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! SO glad you did this.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic western starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford who were considered one of the great duos in film history. You definitely need to watch it.
2:48, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor, while the film was nominated for Best Screenplay at the Oscars.
YES! B.Cass & the S.Dance Kid IS very much worth watching 👍🏼
Thanks for the infor on the soundtrack man!
Such a classic movie, I can't remember how many times I watched this movie as a kid.
Awesome video sir
Hi Shan. Just found your channel. Liking your reactions a lot. You seem well above most other reactors in you perceptions. I ran a film school in London for years and knew a lot of the cinematographers and directors you've been commentating on. Interesting to hear your perspective. Anyway in a n the UK and thought I'd recommend some British films for you to react to (even though many you have reacted to have English crew) my first three that no one reacts to are Scum, The Long Good Friday and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. See what you think.
Harold faltimyer's score was produced on a Fairlight cmi synth! THE synth of the 80's
Bronson Pinchot (Serge at the Art Gallery) became an overnight superstar because of this roll and Beverly Hills Cop 2
