When I did in-ground gardening, before moving entirely to raised beds, I did a lot of trench composting. I dug a trench 12" wide by 12" deep the entire width of the garden. When the kitchen waste bucket got full I would dump it in the end of the trench and cover it with dirt, then start collecting scraps again. When the bucket got full again I would dump it in the trench next to the last batch and cover it with dirt. That process would repeat until the entire trench was full, and then I would start with a new trench. When vegetables were planted on top of the filled trench, they would grow unbelievably well! But, since moving to raised beds, all of the kitchen scraps just go into the compost tumblers to make some great compost.

Once you place veggie scraps in the hole, mix some soil through them before covering, I also mix through sheep poo etc. I will sometimes dig the hole deeper and place small pieces of branches at the bottom, these take a long time to break down but the process adds to the soil biome...

all my food scraps go to my chickens, who then give it back to me as really rich fertiliser (poop) which I add to my mulch (Ruth Stout style gardening)

How should this be adapted in cold climate like Montana or Canada? If there is winter below zero for 5 months, would you trench deeper? I need to use all beds every year.

I live in Calgary, Canada and the stuff I bury usually break down in less than a year. I do trench composting from June to September, when the ground doesn't freeze.

Bokashi cold composting might be suitable for you to keep your food waste through the winter months :)

Hey Phil, good to see ya.. I have something you might be able to help me with. I ended up with a large amount of nitrogen in the form of amino acids (AG Mino) from down to earth. I use it on plants but I was thinking I could use it to compost leaves or make some other product with it. If you have any ideas let me know. Thanks

Composting leaves is a good idea. If you get get your hands on a big pile of wood chips, like from an arborist or from the municipality/county, that AG Mino would be helpful. Otherwise, you can save it - I expect it will last a while.

Hey I'm looking at your neem oil products, but I've only seen the 8oz size. Is there a larger size?

That's the first thing I thought as well. Kinda sounds like him too, only a more masculine version.
