I feel like some people won't be happy that there wasn't riding in todays video, but I'm truly grateful for such informative content. Mike is a damn legend.
im super proud of my titanium frame from mike. he's a top guy, he was very patient with me asking silly questions about how to get my geo right. thanks mike you are the man! Ti57
Hell yeah. Ti 11 here. I’m pretty sure it was the first ti 22” ever made. I did have to send it back twice for cracks since I bought it in Nov 2018. Once at the seat clamp (no biggie) and once on the downtube by the gusset (much more of an issue). Based on what he said about frame life - esp. since this is ti we’re talking about - I’ll probably replace it next year.
Getting to actually sit with Laird and weld is the ultimate dream. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging with him doing photos with Keith king stunt shows and he is the raddest dude.
Not only is that titanium frame beautiful, BUT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING WITH WORKING WITH TITANIUM.IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY.AWESOME WORK BROTHER.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Mike at Eastwood skate park in wilmington nc the 1st time. I live about 1 hour from Greenville NC. I have run into him at other NC skate parks Greenville NC. Super solid guy. Very intelligent individual. Good to see he is doing well. May God keep blessing you Mike.
I started my career as a welder today I am a journeyman Tool and Die maker still welding once in a while tool steel now lol I appreciate this video and Mike's talents
This was such a great video, As someone who has weld experience I’d love to see a video where Mike really gets into detail and talks about the machine he uses, his hood, filler wire choice and anything else. I’d be curious to learn all that. I hope Scotty keeps putting out content like this and hope Laird Frames reaches the level of success Mike set out to accomplish.
@@TheShift1313 man I forget how spoiled my highschool weld program was over 1 million on our weld shop 60+ name brand welders most within 2-3 years old several brand new Lincoln smart welders that allowed you to see how your weld stacked up against the last (welder designed for human production) so the welder knows what areas he has to slow down in exc. Was pretty crazy had a robotic welder for us to learn on and program. Was pretty cool got to mess around with the auto pulse for aluminum and I was able to control a way better bead than everyone else because I would add my filler in as the pulse went lower and when it went higher it would spread the puddle out as I penetrate the raw base metal. For steel not much of a purpose for it but these sensitive metals the pulse is amazing to use to control a puddle. He could weld it without pulse but probably has his reasoning but the pulse is definitely a better setting to run to to the various angles he has to do pulse like I said allows for better puddle control
I’m a washed up BMX rider from the 2000s. I just received my Lairdframe and couldn’t be happier with it. He did a phenomenal job. It will probably be the last frame I will ever buy because I don’t get to ride as much or as hard as I used to.
This is a sweet link up between 2 legends, back in the day the Eastern grim reaper was the only Titanium freestyle bmx option, recently heard of Laird frames and am stoked to see they are still around.
Very informative video! Not just frame and tires it is much more technical to produce quality! I never thought that learning about a unfamiliar sport could be so interesting! Having had a few ladies pleasure riding bikes I had no idea what skill it took to create a sport bike! Thanks for sharing!!
This has some serious "Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe" vibes and it's great! This might be a new thing where you feature some of the people making the different components in the industry.
Great job on the video and getting time with Mike. First off, there are so many top quality stuff being made in inconspicuous buildings like this. You can see where Mike put his efforts and money. That frame jig it awesome. He is right, most framebuilders tack the frame in the jig. Mike's jig is meant to weld the whole frame in the jig. It was also great that he had a titanium frame in the jig while you were there. I'm not a BMX guy (I missed that era), but I was looking for bicycle framebuilding content and I found Mike to be insightful and generous with sharing his knowledge and even his business plan. Going from pro rider to pro frame builder for Olympic and Champion riders.
Awesome 👍🏻Mike’s frames are top notch….This video was edited/filmed extremely professional all around.. I appreciate the hard work and time into this video…
I'm taking a welding course in school right now, this is so inspiring to see. I make lot of the same mistakes a Matty haha, so its cool to learn from him as a beginner and see a different perspective from a professional.
The fact that you commented, makes my day. I've just started tig welding after years of riding bmx. It's a fine art. Your frames are some of the cleanest ones on the planet, you should be proud of what you do. Amazing👍👌🇦🇺
I love all of your videos, but this is one of my favorites. Some great information in here and it's pretty obvious you guys had a blast! Mike's work is amazing!
I️ love these type of videos where you just showcase the bmx world and show us the behind the scenes things that we don’t normally see. As a scooter/bmx rider, I️ am so grateful for how much I️ve learned about bmx from you scott
I rode a lot in Greenville coming up as a kid in middle/high school. My best friend moved there to ride full time and work at the bike shop there so I stayed with him almost every weekend. Mike was always around with the crew and to be honest he was not the nicest guy to us. After a while, if I saw that white full face, I would just leave my bike on the rack and go do something else. He seems a bit more mellow these days, I hope his business keeps doing well.
Great video, as a welder/fabricator myself I love looking at other peoples shops/setups, also great to see matty and yourself interested it the trade! Keep at it fellas
from a bike rider and an engineering student who recently picked up a 2009 Norco Ryde Chromoly 26" dirt jumper (so 13 year old bike), I'd love a video for those out there who don't know where to look and what to look for on a frame. During the pandemic, we all know supplies are limited. I always check for ovalized headset and bottom bracket, I also hunt for cracks. I guess this could also be a maintenance video for people to check their own bikes. Also what is a sign of a frame coming to the end of its life but has a bit of time left and what indicators say to replace it before it breaks. Love your work Scotty and this video was great.
Like the fact in the end he's telling us what to check regardless of who built it. Gave me a better idea what I'm already checking after a strange front end creak/click sound
Laird is a god! That man has done more for bmx than most. Great video..no riding needed..this information is great for people that are not informed..keep the great content coming boys great to have you guys back!
Awesome video! Love watching Mattie weld, as well as the work and fabrication that goes into the frames.I’d definitely in the future would like to purchase one!
very interesting. and for us old schoolers. we played as mike in the og mirra video game. he was one of the people you could be. i dont always comment but i had to for this in case mike is coming to see who is stoked on this video. good job mike.
this has been fascinating to watch . I've done a little MIG and TIG welding but no where near to the standard of Mr Laird . my dream would be to get one of Mike Lairds frames . a nice twin top tube flatland frame and maybe see if he can be talked in to making forks and bars all in Ti .
Mike laird is a legend. First time I heard of him was back in the late 90s when he was on a new bicycle company’s team name NIRVE ! The team consisted of (3) riders. Gary Ellis (racing) Stephen Murray (Dirt jumping) and Mike Laird (freestyle). I believe around that same time is when he moved to Greenville just before the explosion of pro town USA

Mike Laird was part of the original Greenville crowd and was featured in Dave Mirra Pro BMX.
That’s enough to make you BMX royalty.
Pretty sure there was a clip from the Dave Mirra Pro BMX game in the beginning of the viddo
My buddy who wasnt really into bmx back then even knew who Mike Laird was. Legend
Nice I remember him in the game 🤘
I'm pretty sure this guy could have excelled in anything he did. Just one of those people. Very very smart person talented dude. 💯
I’m just a tryhard

In a world so hyper focused on STEM, it's super refreshing to see some love given back to the trades.
underrated comment
The E stands for Engineering. What do you think this is?
@@daycowhite6947 you can engineer all day, but you still need someone who knows how to work if you want anything done.
Great point. Trades like metal work ain't going away for a long time yet and should be promoted 👍👍
Literally went over a ton of engineering concepts in this video. STEM and trades go hand in hand

Best frames I have ever ridden period
🙏🏻
What an artist with a welder. I've watched a lot of fabrication videos and that's the nicest titanium welding I've ever seen.
Man Mike’s frames are the sickest ones in BMX.
1/3 artist, 1/3 tradesman, 1/3 engineer
100% awesome
Doing it right, Mr. Laird is of a dwindling breed.
To all involved with this, I loved it. More of this kinda "behind the scenes" of bmx. Keep going Scotty ❤️👍

Are used to ride with him back here in Hampton VA. Awesome rider
What an awesome video. Love seeing what goes into fabricating a BMX frame. Gives you a greater appreciation for the bikes. Awesome job guys.
I love how Scotty has expanded his video to more than just the norm. The videos seem to just get better and better.

Laird is a frickin legend. Still remember the bmx games intos with his riding. Seems like an awesome guy and really impressed with his shop!
Man a Laird Titanium frame would be badass to have. Nice video as always guys!
LOVED this episode! Watching Mike and Matty get excited was pure!
This is such a good watch. Love seeing what goes into Mike's work.
This video gives me a whole new appreciation for my Dad. He was a welder for many years. Great video! Go Matty!

Great video. Awesome to see a behind the scene of what Mike does and building his frames.
My buddy Riley ordered one from him it's a dope frame super well done,!
Unreal video! One of the best

NICE!
Bro keep on the welding holy smokes ! That second weld was prime !!!
What a great shop and a nice guy. That home made rotating stand looks amazing
It's called a rotisserie.
I've seen ones for cars built in sheds. It's nice to see one made properly.

Best way to weld a frame! 👍 Had couple of custom bicycle frames made road and MTB surprised some one is doing for Modern BMX 👍
Thank you for sharing this guy
