After being persecuted in the newspaper for being incompetent, Senator Smith (James Stewart) targets the Washington press.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Frank Capra's classic comedy-drama established James Stewart as a lead actor in one of his finest (and most archetypal) roles. The film opens as a succession of reporters shout into telephones announcing the death of Senator Samuel Foley. Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), the state's senior senator, puts in a call to Governor Hubert "Happy" Hopper (Guy Kibbee) reporting the news. Hopper then calls powerful media magnate Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold), who controls the state -- along with the lawmakers. Taylor orders Hopper to appoint an interim senator to fill out Foley's term; Taylor has proposed a pork barrel bill to finance an unneeded dam at Willet Creek, so he warns Hopper he wants a senator who "can't ask any questions or talk out of turn." After having a number of his appointees rejected, at the suggestion of his children Hopper nominates local hero Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), leader of the state's Boy Rangers group. Smith is an innocent, wide-eyed idealist who quotes Jefferson and Lincoln and idolizes Paine, who had known his crusading editor father. In Washington, after a humiliating introduction to the press corps, Smith threatens to resign, but Paine encourages him to stay and work on a bill for a national boy's camp. With the help of his cynical secretary Clarissa Sanders (Jean Arthur), Smith prepares to introduce his boy's camp bill to the Senate. But when he proposes to build the camp on the Willets Creek site, Taylor and Paine force him to drop the measure. Smith discovers Taylor and Paine want the Willets Creek site for graft and he attempts to expose them, but Paine deflects Smith's charges by accusing Smith of stealing money from the boy rangers. Defeated, Smith is ready to depart Washington, but Saunders, whose patriotic zeal has been renewed by Smith, exhorts him to stay and fight. Smith returns to the Senate chamber and, while Taylor musters the media forces in his state to destroy him, Smith engages in a climactic filibuster to speak his piece: "I've got a few things I want to say to this body. I tried to say them once before and I got stopped colder than a mackerel. Well, I'd like to get them said this time, sir. And as a matter of fact, I'm not gonna leave this body until I do get them said."

I love how this scene was completely out of no where. You expect him to confront them verbally, and then he just tracks each one of them down and socks them in the face. Damn.

I love how they portray the media in this movie. The bad side where one man controls all the newspapers in his state and the good side. "Honest? Why we're the only ones that can afford to be honest in what we tell the voters. We don't have to be elected like politicians!"

It's all that love energy channeled thru Frank Capra.
This is great character-defining moment. Smith is naive and idealistic, but he is far from stupid and isn’t above letting raw emotion control him.
Truly one of the best protagonists of all time.
Frank Capra and the people he worked with were an amazing bunch So were the movies. So was Capra's "Why We Fight" series, one of the best introductions to WWI (designed as such). But just watch how they use film...

Ah, they cut the clip a little too soon. The reporter holding out the glass says, "Have a drink, Senator? It'll taste better than the truth." And with that, a chastened James Stewart finally calms down, realizing that what they've been telling him is, in fact, the truth - that he's not truly fit to serve in the Senate. (But, of course, that will change.)
I got in trouble in my government class because I kept laughing at this scene

I love this movie because of this one scene. Saw this as a kid (when it was on one of those classic movie channels, as I am not 90+ years old) and cracked tf up
So many people in the comments completely missing the point of the scene. Press deliberately made a fool out of Smith to make a point about shady political appointments. After his initial violent outburst, he actually listens to them, takes their criticism to heart, and becomes a better senator and a better man. Maybe watch a movie before you go off.
That's exactly why this has always been my favorite scene in the film. It just somehow reflects through rose-tinted glasses this past Americana code of honor. He's furious, but is he going postal on them? No, just a single strong punch to the face. And when he bursts into their home territory, do they collectively kick him senseless and then toss him out? No, they sit him down and TALK to him. And he LISTENS. Did it often happen like that back in the day? I don't know, I was still thirty years away from being born. But it doesn't seem to often happen like that now.
You hit the nail on the head. Too bad it's not like this in today's world.
I can't believe this made it into the movie. It's just so out of character, and the fact that it's never addressed again that he immaturely goes around punching people just make it feel like it doesn't fit. Mr. Smith is outspoken, yes, but he never again indicates that he's a violent personality. This scene could also have been used to further evidence that Mr. Smith is invalid for his position, but it's just overlooked.
It teaches him that he actually is invalid, up until they snap him into reality that he can’t be so easily wounded if he is going to be a member of the senate.
Corruption in government is nothing new, or in the Media. It also shows there are still people with integrity and honor, just not enough of them.
