If EVERYONE hit the thanks and donated A FEW BUCKS we could quit our day jobs and restore lighthouses full time! 😃
Hello friends! We are working on huge and expensive projects for these 3 lighthouses including a dock that will cost about $200k but will be AMAZING when complete and we will show it all here! Please consider sending supporting our mission by hitting the THANKS button on TH-cam or donating at our website thelighthousecenters.org Let’s “Restore the Lighthouse, Restore the Bay!” 😊
Looks like you need to upgrade the anchoring of your "crane" base before you try lifting any weight.
@@dallasarnold8615definitely will before lifting anything heavy. Need to anchor at the bottom and add a winch. Thanks
@@thelighthousecenters if it's not any inconvenience could we see a loose blueprint of what the dock will look like? either way i'm sure it will respect and match the original design. Great work so excited to see a 20min long vid posted 👍👍👍
Looks like a big challenge but for a worthy cause, I’m all about adventures & would love to do this for living!
Yep. I guess that is a valid statement. If everyone did that. If you want people to do that, maybe you should ASK....?
One of the best things about being miles out on the water at night is the lack of light pollution. This is probably the reason why the light doesn't need to be blinding to be seen from miles away.
Yes! It is beautiful at night. Also (I realized later) that the reason it doesn’t look bright is that it focuses the light on a flat plane and I am taller than the light so when I go up there it is firing at my chest, not my eyes. Every video we make has a few misunderstandings like this. But we are learning together! 😀

Great research places I'm sure
Just a couple of tips haviing worked over the water in the Navy. Tie a string to the tools you use over the water and attached the other end to something secure or even a belt loop, just in case your wrench slips out of your hand. Second, the line you put through the pulley tie a simple knot after the area of the longest area of line your using. This way you don't loose your line to the water since the weight will act as an anchor.
At night, a match light will travel for miles depending on the altitude over the water, we were taught in the Navy as well.
Light is much like sound when its completely quiet. Dont need to speak very loudly for your voice to carry. Waves of any kind can travel quite far when unimpeded.
They have called tool buddy’s so if u drop tools .
Yes always have ropes and tools tied off... Good rule of thumb, if you do not want to lose it then tie it down/off.... Holds true when trimming trees to... LOL
Its cool you got to interview one of the coast guard guys.
I imagine there isn't too many interviews on the modern job of caring for these (its a bit boring as its just checking wires) but it is nice seeing how they do this job.
Also I bet if you went diving by the lighthouse, I bet you find countless tools people have lost.
Matt was great on camera too! We got lucky there 😀
I was thinking you should drill a hole through the neutral axis of that tool and attach a safety wire so if you drop it it doesn’t fall into the bay.

ANT (Aids To Navigation) units are an often overlooked but essential unit in the Coast Guard. Most of these units have an average of maybe 20 people but they do quite a lot despite the small unit size. MK1 (the guy in the white hard hat) did an awesome job explaining what they do. Being from Maryland, love what you guys are doing with the old lighthouses and restoring them!
Thanks! We couldn’t have asked for a better ATON team than these guys!
Fascinating.. And thanks to you and the Coast Guard for keeping this history alive...
Those guys really cared about what they do!
Glad you guys are saving these old pieces of history .The sooner they are painted and made weather tight the sooner more vistors can be brought out to see the progress.
An old seaplane mechanic told me that he dropped a wrench, in a Pacific lagoon, and he could see it on the bottom. Over 100 feet out of his reach. After that, he learned to use a cord on every one of his tools, because you can't just run and in the middle of the Pacific to get a new tool.
Those holes in tool handles are not just for hanging them on pegboard.
That’s some serious water clarity! We get about 3-5 feet of vision max in the Chesapeake Bay
Greetings from India 🇮🇳
All the best for this restoration project 👍
Hello and thank you for watching from India! 😊
Haha love the editing and Rich cracking jokes 🦗. Very nice solution. USCG was very helpful. Well done. Great video. Looking forward to your next upload.
Thanks Barry! Yeah Thomas made bad jokes funny 😂
The Admiral of the USCG believes in cross training.
The Admiral of the Navy believes in cross dressing. 🤣
The ball-busting between branches of the service is real 😂
Crickets! lol, love it ( me at every party)
Incredible work you are doing. Enjoy seeing the updates
At least Thomas (the editor) got big laughs 🤨
Navigation aids are one of the greatest tools mankind has. Without it thousands of lives and billions of dollars would be lost every year. Shout out to the coasties for risking their lives everyday to make sure we stay safe.
Nice videos on lighthouse restoration. Something not a lot of people knows. How about showing the lighthouse at night with the lights working? Keep up the good work!
Great suggestion! Thanks!
If ww3 jumps off , Analog is going to be a thing again , I fully support manned lighthouses
Just for fun I think you should try magnet fishing around the lighthouse to see what you could pull up.
Yes! We will do that and I guarantee we will pull up something interesting!
That could probably be a whole video series, and id watch it all 😎
@@thelighthousecenters Possibly a few wrenches...
You were talking about using tools while you're working over the side of the rail and trying not to drop something into the drink. In another lifetime (11 years in the Navy) I spent a lot of time on three different ships. Much of that time was above the 100' level working on equipment. I really didn't look forward to dropping a wrench or something and having to go down after it. I had a small line tied to the tools and to my safety harness. Sometimes the hookup was inconvenient but it served its purpose adequately. It really annoys your shipmates when a metal tool makes that peculiar "clinking" sound when it hits the deck. The bigger the tool is, the more impressive the "clinking" sound!! 😂🤣
its cool to see the non-rescue side of the coast guard. The Nav Aid side doesnt get all the media attention and such...but they still play a huge critical role. Its good to see them getting some exposure and explaining their knowledge
When I saw the new episode I was super stoked to get home to watch this with my 4 year old daughter who loves this show and you guys! Keep it up! She says she “loves you guys and can’t wait to see more lighthouse shows!”
That’s great! We know lots of kids who enjoy the channel. When my kids were little I always loved the shows that were entertaining for the parents and the kids. I hope that is what we created here 😊
What is her name? Tell her Thomas and Rich said hello from the lighthouse!
Fun video, you guys are going some great work! I think your day, the coasties day, and my day got better from these interactions.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Beautiful just beautiful TY for starting this vlog ❤
Your videos make my day! We boat on the Chesapeake and it's so great to see the lighthouses in this new way. Also fun to see a Coastie really enjoying his job.
Thanks! And thank you for the support. It means a lot!
Cool lighthouse! I am a commercial clammer in NJ. We use a 12 volt electric pot hauler to pick up our clam rakes full of clams. I have an electra-dyne pot hauler that uses a Boston Gear box attached to a 12 volt motor. Hamilton Marine also sells them. I have a 30 to 1 gear box on mine and it will pick up 25 to 40 pound anchors with no problem, would work well to lift stuff off of the boat..
100 000 subscribers - congratulations and well done....
Thanks! We are about to go buck wild on the channel with content! Stay tuned 😀
Thank goodness the algorithm decided to suggest this vid today! I have so many questions, but I'll hold onto them for now and go watch your other vids first.
Keep up the great work!
This comment made my day! Please subscribe 😀
Another great video!👍Looking forward to future projects on the lighthouse!
Thank you friend! We have some huge projects that we are starting now!
As an ex-Coastie, I helped maintained Brant Point, Great Point, and Sankaty Head Lighthouses (Nantucket Island, MA). Always an exciting time to go into one of these awesome relics from the past. And the views....yeah. 😎
Did you throw used batteries into the water?
That is so awesome and sweet that you guys are saving lighthouses❤
Thank you!!!
Those guys were super nice, great experience!
Awesome dudes!
I've been waiting for a new post. I can't wait to see what you complete this summer.
Thank you for following. The big project is a dock! You won’t believe it when you see it 🤩
Yes, me too ❤😊!! Make more videos 😊
On it! Keep watching and we will keep making 😁
Good to see you back!
Glad to see your comment 😊
This will be a great watch!
You couldn't have asked for a more beautiful sky background, when you were up in the lamp room. ☁🌤☁ The crickets cracked me up. 😀
One thing about offshore lighthouses. There is always a great background. And yes, I intentionally told bad jokes to set Thomas up for the cricket gag 😉
Rodney “Rod” Farva is in the Coast Guard? Can I get a liter of chum!
😂
Thanks for the update!
Thanks for the comment! 😀
These videos are so good, thank you for refreshing content. The editing has something about it that is perfect. Can't put my finger on one individual thing but the over all language of the videos (not English lol) is so entertaining while also being interesting.
Thanks for making non-brain rot
Your comment inspires us to make more and ever better videos! Thank you! ❤️
Yes another lighthouse video!
Yesssss!
Loving your channel chaps, doing good work. Would love more regular updates, but know time an money is a restraint for you. You leave more cliffhangers than Dallas sometimes lol
Yeah we do lol We plan to produce more content faster. We just brought in another person to help 😊
Love what your doing.
great and interesting video's.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I grew up fishing all those waters from norfolk, hampton, eastern shore, guinea love yalls work
Thanks. It’s a beautiful area!
Summertime is work time! Glad to see you again! That crane will make things a lot easier, but the base seems to be a bit loose ...
Thanks to the coast guard for their service and for explaining all those things.
Are you planning on working at Wolf trap any time soon, or will you finish Hooper Island first?
Love your videos, thanks for sharing. Surprised it has a simple pulley instead of something with mechanical advantage
We could add a snatch block but this will do for now. I think we just hook up a 12V, 3000 lb. winch and be done. Thanks for the comment!
YAY! New Video! 😃😄
YAY! Inspiring comment! Thank you ❤️
Thomas does such a great job with the editing! 😂
Another Starbucks for him ☕️ 😮
Doing a great job. Love from India
🇮🇳
Thank you for watching from India! ❤️
Thanks for all your work!
Thank you for supporting! ❤️
Great work team. 👍
Great video again Cant wait to see more!
Thanks! Stay tuned 😊
YOU SHOULD have some Ham Radio gear out there and put that place on the Light House on the air Contest each year. [Idont mean C.B.] sure be fun to operate from one of those lights. Dave, W4GSM
You all need more videos make more money. We like it.
Thanks! We have so much to share but we are still doing our regular jobs. We are in a weird place because we know we are onto something great but we can’t quite afford to do it full time. If the channel really blows up or we get a bunch of donations then we could just go crazy with content. Things that are worth doing are not easy. I think things are going to change very soon so please keep following!
Outstanding video again. Always wondered how the guard maintains the lighthouse’s after they are removed from service. Very interesting and enjoyed the crickets.
“Enjoyed the crickets” 😂 now there’s something you don’t hear every day 😀
The idea of a davit is that it can rotate so you dont have to lean out. It may need greasing, but once the cargo is lifted above the railings you should be able to rotate it over the floor and lower. It helps to bolt or wield a short bar to help turn it. If you have a few things to lift a simple thing like that can really save an aching back.
Not coasties, Try green water navy.🤣 Yer welcome, from the blue water navy.
I just discovered your channel. I immediately knew I wanted to spend a night out there. It's be just so very quiet.
That coast guardsman was in one of Peter Santellenos videos!
Love your videos.
Regards from the Republic of Ireland.
Thank you my friend! 🍀
Great video, I'm enjoying watching your progress and wish you all the best, these old lighthouses deserve to be preserved. Looking at the weight you had at the end, I think it looks more like the weight from an old lead and line, used to measure water depth in the age of sail, if it has a domed bottom, that would be to take a tallow pellet which would indicate the type of sea bottom, that's a cool find if it is!
Technology so cool that little LED light does all the work of a huge 400 volt light bulb.. not only 1000 w@ 12 volts
I think LED light is one of the most significant advancements in recent years. It takes about 5% of the energy to make an equal amount of light compared with incandescent lighting. Amazing!
Love the crickets and other editing “inserts”. Adds some fun.
Thanks! Is this Dan O from Dan O’s seasoning?
@@thelighthousecenters No, but I'll have to look them up though.
That was fun!
Great episode. All the best from Australia.
A long distance THANK YOU for supporting our mission!
Wow this is really cool, also currently at 99.9k subscribers. So close to 100k :D
Yessss! Thanks for noticing 😊 we are super excited and inspired to bring you more videos!!
Great video. Give our regards to the Coast Guard next time you see 'em.
Will do!
4:50 I know you guys are fixing up the place, but still seems mighty brave to be climbing up that railing and trusting it with your full body weight here. ( Also TH-cam is being TH-cam again, I never got the notification for this, so happy coincidence I stopped by to see if I missed any uploads! )
Get that fresh paint going first! Scrape/paint!😅 Yellow black strips around the floor eyelet(that cone will blow off).
Production value on these videos is stellar
Thank you my friend! We try. Thomas does an amazing job! 😊
I just found this cool channel! It would be neat if you made playlists for each Lighthouse, that way it is easier to follow each one without having to try and guess!
Thanks, I enjoy your content
Thank you for watching! Yes we are going to hire more people and organize all the videos as you suggested 😊
Good to.see the first mate is well fed . I always love a good boat pooch
That’s Finn the waterman’s water dog! Scott’s family dog. He loves being on Scott’s work boat although he eats a bit of the profits 😀
Very interesting, Thanks!,
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
@thelighthousecenters in theatre when working on rigging, lighting, or other elevated areas we tie our tools to a leash. The leash is then connected to your belt or belt loop by a carabiner. Might be a good not to loose your wrenches in the bay.
This is so cool, well done guys ❤
Thanks! ❤️
if you get a bigger diameter pully for that lifting frame you can more easily pull up heavier objects.
Subbed. Greetings from Finland.
So cool to see! You did tie off your crane line at the end, right?
Same coast guard guys as the Peter Santinello video on Smith island. Seem cool
Get a tool belt with an extendable cord like the old school builders used so they'd never lose tools when working from a great height.
effinm hilarious subscribed. is there a west cost chapter of The Lighthouse Center?
No yet 😊 Thanks for subscribing and commenting!
Wicket video guys.
You should do some magnet fishing around the lighthouse, see what others have dropped.
These lighthouses are 125 to 150 years old so there definitely is some stuff down there. We will do some magnet fishing and show you what we find! We also have an underwater robot and will post some video of that too!
Very informative vid.
Thanks. We try to mix education with our brand of silliness 😊
Wow what great guys! Greeting from Germany
I agree. They were awesome! Guten Tag!
They finally uploaded again :D
Thanks for waiting! More will be coming including some heavy duty dock construction and restoration 😀
need recessed plate hooks, even weld flushed mount bar across a hole to hook for lifting
You might look into a capstan for that jib. Depending on how it is set up, it will hold the rope if you let go, and it can make lifting things pretty easy. I bet there is a yacht surplus store somewhere around, you can pick up a used capstan for cheap, depending on size
Will do. Thanks for the suggestion!
Very nice.
Noticed the bullet hole in the glass when you were looking at the light!
Yeah it was like that when we took over the lighthouse. We have security cameras now so if anyone gets close at least we will have video
Randomly suggested this video o o
just an odd random suggestion than turned out to be pretty interesting.
Thanks! Please subscribe for more 😊
thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Everyone knows that's a 9 mile light! Duh!
The Internet will let you know LOL
I brought shame upon my family 😔
Go, Coast Guard! My father was a Coast Guardsman in WW 2, serving in the Southwest Pacific.
We thank him for his service! 😊
I had to look up how much nine miles was in kilometers 🤭
Nice channel, greetings from the Netherlands
Sorry! We forgot to convert to metric on that one! Greetings and thanks for following from the Netherlands! ❤️
the lead weights probably a sounding weight, if it has a small indentation at the bottom that would be filled with tallow or grease to sample the bottom
Good to see a new video. Do the coast guard have a statutory right of entry into the lighthouse to maintain the light ?
Yes. We had to sign an agreement when we bought the lighthouse, granting access to them whenever they needed. We also have to provide them with keys to the locks in case we are not there. It really is super reliable and low maintenance though
New sub here.... Hey you guys need to do the light house from New York City all the way up the Hudson River and Connecticut's lighthouse they are all run down and we need people like you to bring back the lighthouses not only for landmarks to visit but to educate as well about these from the past bring into the future....
Hopefully we will get there eventually. Thanks for subbing!
your editor is having fun
He’s out of control! 😂
1 was watching this channel/series the first time. And already an new video 18 minutes ago🎉🎉
Actually we need to put out more content faster but thanks! 😀

tools over water....you know it, drill a hole for a lanyard. Or tape the lanyard to the tool...1/4 inch, nylon line, tape it securely to the tool. Adjustable wrench, you have a whole to use....make a loop for the other end , slide over your wrist. Take the time....cause it ALWAYS that one tool you need that slips and gets away from you.....Working on ships 34 years is how I know.
As cool as the old pully looks, you can pick up a new block and tackle with much more mechanical advantage pretty cheap.
As an old Navy guy I would love a weekend as it is
... Thanks, I'm here all week. 🦗
