Bloody video games.
They've caused their fair share of drama over the years, with violent action and gory killing attributed to all kinds of societal harm.
These days, a certain amount of bloodshed is tolerated - but not so long ago a splash of red pixels was all it took to start a fuss.
Join me as I prepare to dive knee deep into blood, guts, and video games.
Covered are classic horror titles such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the Atari 2600 and torture-themed light gun game Chiller: action shooters such as the digital rendition of Charles Bronson in Death Wish 3, Ikari Warriors; Decapitation in Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, demon slaying in Splatterhouse and exploding drug barons in the 32-bit Narc.
Tecmo Knight was a decapitation-laden beat-em up, Space Gun and Beast Busters rail shooters with liberal dismemberment and copious blood.
The dawn of Full Motion Video spawned games like Night Trap, and the realistic digitised sprites of Mortal Kombat: with the violent fatalities courting controversy - and leading to the formation of the ESRB.
MK also spawned a number of clones, including Blood Warrior, Time Killers and Eternal Champions on the Mega Drive and Mega CD.
The rise of the FPS genre in the 90s followed in the footsteps of the violent shooters of the late 80s - such titles would cement the word 'gib' into the gaming lexicon.
Doom saw enemies explode into a red paste, Rise of The Triad flung eyeballs at the screen with its ludicrous gibs - and Quake features the first seen polygonal gibs.
Gibbing became the hallmark of the genre, with most later examples permitting the reduction of your opponents into fleshy chunks - at least until ragdoll physics took hold.
Meanwhile horror adventure games such as Phantasmagoria and Harvester took advantage of CD-ROM's storage to use realistic death scenes - and survival horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill saw bloody scenes to ramp up tension.
Both Carmageddon and Thrill Kill found controversy in the late 90s, with the former featuring reckless driving and pedestrian slaughter, and the latter with sadistic thrill kill finishing moves.
Meanwhile, FPS games had matured to the point where a little gore was accepted: the cerebral bore in Turok 2, the intagib rifle of Unreal Tournament and the dismemberment of Soldier of Fortune.
Games in which you play a psychopath proved more disruptive: such as the Grand Theft Auto series, Postal 2, or murder-em-up Manhunt and its sequel.
Post Manhunt, there's been little outrage: Half-Life 2 is very gory in places, as is Resident Evil 4 - but only the more gruesome deaths such as a chainsaw decapitation caused a stir.
Recently, mainstream games such as Gears of War, Dead Space and Fallout 3 have all featured gory violence, but such bloodshed is now deemed acceptable.
As with the revived Fallout series, we've also seen the return of a few other gory classics, such as the 2010 remake of Splatterhouse, the return of brutal fatalities in Mortal Kombat 9, and yet more ludicrous gibs in ROTT 2013.
Some games use violent scenes as part of their story, such as No Russian in Modern Warfare 2 - or in the key moments of Spec Ops: The Line.
Hotline Miami is a top-down exercise in hyper-violence, that sometimes gives the player pause for their actions, asking: 'do you like hurting other people?'
The God of War series is a prime example of a spectacle fighter: in which you brutally slay, decapitate or gouge out organs from an entire bestiary of mythological beings.
Similarly stylish is 2009's Madworld: with comic-book visuals inspired by Sin City, the monochrome combat is liberally splashed with huge amounts of crimson as you perform sadistic finishing moves.
Gore is par for the course in the horror genre - Left 4 Dead features hordes of zombies and a host of ways to despatch them: Killing Floor offers similarly gory co-op, Call of Duty: World At War introduced Nazi Zombies was the goriest COD, and the one which introduced zombies to the series - and every detail of your gory destruction is captured in Sniper Elite 2, and its Nazi Zombie Army variant: with the awesome slow-motion terminal arc of bullets, paired with gratuitous X-Ray vision: tearing flesh, piercing organs and smashing bone.
No doubt, rent flesh and rivers of claret are an arousing visual - appealing to human instinct at a very basic level, and acting as an effective way to communicate injury.
Taken to extremes, flinging gore at a player is a caricature of carnage - reassuring the concious mind that it's all just a game. - เกม
Is Australia banned in Australia?
+s0nnyburnett No, because banning Australia is banned in Australia.
bj0rn
Thanks for the clarification.
Nah mate
we have R rated games now as of 2014 i think
+gwald In 2013, the first R-rated game in austrailia was Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
All these older games look tame by today's standards.... except for Chiller... wtf Chiller?
Yea that one looks really out of place. I can't believe it was an arcade game.. it looks more like an early 2000s internet flash game, the sort of thing which can be infinitely offensive because they don't have to worry about sales.
indeed. chiller reminds me of the macromedia flash games that where on newgrounds in the early 2000's.
I actually recoiled at that. What the Hell?
Cryptosporidum Psychosis crazymonkeygames isnt either hidden or secret
I wouldnt say so, you can kill children in Fallout 1 and 2, and hear their screams of death.
And then DOOM 2016 came along...
i more like doom 2 or brutal doom
2016 version is too sci fi
the original is supposed to be sci fi. it is set on mars and the main character is a space marine.
Um, no? The original Doom 1 is set on Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars but not Mars itself, Doom 2 is set on Earth, Doom 3 was the first game in the series to actually take place on Mars. But yeah, Doom has always been sci-fi.
+Drekloe lol ikr
DOOM 2016 doesn't have anywhere near the amount of gore some older games do. I'm not trying to shit on DOOM 2016, but it wasn't original in terms of gore at all. Most of DOOM 2016's gore is inspired by Brutal Doom anyway.
2:08 "the idea of shooting unarmed innocents deemed distasteful by some"
HMM I WONDER WHY
i did a big think there, but i couldn't come up with anything
Probably the only gory game(s) I like are the new DOOM games, because you are not killing innocent people or any people at all, you're killing goddamn demons, so it feels good.
@@shrekogreson7580 well, in gta for example it's up to you if you wanna kill innocent people... but steering onto the sidewalk to mow the lawn is just so much fun :D
but to each their own ^^
Wait some? Who knew I would be the some

I remember that was also possible in CS 1.6 on one map. If you put as much as one bullet into a chicken, it would *explode into feathers* with funny chicken noise to it :D Or at least I remember it that way.
These are like documentaries, theyre great!
Yea, he truly is a master of creating little very informative documentaries on subjects i'd never think to have one. The information is great never mind the presentation and voice of his makes it all engaging as hell.

Patrik Ugrin Except without all the Moonshiner crap and whatnot.
The most gory game that I played was Dwarf Fortress. In that game, you can sever limbs, punch out teeth, chop off heads, and then pick them all up and put them in your bag. It's ASCII graphics aren't revolutionary, but it's the implication of violence that makes it an extremely gory. It's the only game I know where you can blind a man using in-game fighting mechanics.
Fallout 1 and 2
Pinkiepyro1
Yeah, but the gore has no impact on gameplay like Dwarf Fortress does.
Elaxter Yeah I wouldn't know since I never played DF but it seems really intriguing. Just never got into it, but I'll probs get into it some day
Pinkiepyro1
You'll be in for a wild ride, mate.
***** Those were only set pieces. The only thing "gory" was the red paint. In Dwarf Fortress, you can knock people's teeth out and collect them off the ground for your own personal collection (or ammo for throwing).
I'm disappointed, I thought this was about Al Gore
I'm super serial
superpenguin77664 Same. lol
I'm pretty sure this qualifies as that if you put it in a lockbox
edit: necessary citation: www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/cold-opening-gore--bush-first-debate/n11360
superpenguin77664 Tbh, he could talk about anything and I'd still watch it. His voice and the visual presentations are great.
Just read his book: 'Rational Thinking, Reasonable Future'.
Gore was 'killed' in the Bush.
you know, now that i think about it... the ESRB is a wonderful thing, without it we probably would not even be able to play violent games because of government regulation.
+Nameless Exactly. I am glad the video pointed that out. It's easy to look at any form of authority casting judgment onto entertainment as bad, but it was a worthwhile compromise for the industry. Imagine all those years after Mortal Kombat until now with government regulation. It would be a different medium entirely.
The ESRB still has the AO rating to tell people they can't play the game, on consoles at least.
Nameless But still there's the chance that games will shy away from Gore to prevent a loss in sales. Not saying that putting what's in the game on the cover is a bad thing though.
"Can't play" as in "we forgot that the internet is a thing, and didn't know that people can hack consoles to play unsigned games. Woops"
ESRB only has a ceremonial control over PC games anyway...tons of games release without ratings...apparently they're not actually required.
Only on consoles are they required.
Phantasmogoria is horrific by today's standards. That face being torn about is awfully realistic and I can see why that caused a stir.
I was watching on TV some documentary or something about other animals doing horrifying shit to people a while ago, and one of them was about a monkey mauling a woman's face, they even showed picture of her face "fixed", and it looked pretty similar to that.
@@analanus3131 Charla Nash?
"... flinging gore at a player is a caricature of carnage, reassuring the conscious mind that it's all just a game."
Good line.
And good video in general.
Remember Hatred back when it was first shown? I was honestly surprised how many people from the gaming community were against it
MrGamer1992 It was violent for the sake of being violent, which would be fine if it weren't extremely edgy and was actually good
There's a reason for that, the blood and gore in most games is just a means to an end in the story-line. Not Hatred, the player doesn't eviscerate someone in order to save his family. Violence is the endgame.
Not only games like Hatred create parental butt-hurt and fuel for FOX NEWS' propaganda machine, the semi-indie gaming industry (not talking about you, EA, YOU PIECE OF SHIT !) doesn't want heat like that on their future work because it limits what they can do in games they're developing and the sales they're able to rake in.
But then again, Destructive Creations (it's Creator) made this game as an art piece a la Damien Hirst (the guy who put a cow's head in a glass box full of flies and called it art). In a way they're saying:"If this game offends you, then it's not for you."
I feel like if Hatred were better made, then more people would like it. The execution animations were nice, if a little tame, and the way the movement and shooting works may be fun. It's just that the game is ruined by the fact that it looks like it was written by an angsty teenager who worships the Columbine shooters
That, and the player wears a trench coat. Go figure.
I think that the guys from Extra Credit summed the matter brilliantly.
The point isn't that Hatred was violent..infact it wasn't that violent. The fact is that it was sadistic, without a purpose, a message or being silly. It was sadistic, which is different than being gorey
It's not like in GTA, where you do what you do because you want to earn money, it's the objective of the mission or simply because it's fun to have the police chase you; and it's not like in Spec Ops, where there is a story-telling purpose behind the violence.
The whole premise of hatred is: you're a "normal" guy who hates people, and you like to see them suffer. That's it. And it was played out as 100% serious, no silly or humorous stuff in it.
I personally think that it makes a huge difference.
Seriously Chiller and Phantasmorgia are worse and more upsetting than some of todays games violence.
Yeah it's interesting. I think it's all about the context of violence, rather than the actual violence itself. Even graphically realistic displays of violence seem tolerable as long as there is a justifiable context behind them.
In contrast, graphically subpar games displaying violence can ruffle feathers if the context is unsettling enough, such as being a torturer, mass shootings, or terrorism.
reggiardito Same here. I can't believe that existed so far back.
And Harvester. I personally think Harvester is one of the most twisted and disturbing games ever made. Not just because of its gore (although it certainly is a gory game), but also because of the level of depravity and all-out "wrongness" that pervades every part of the game. I still feel sick every time I think of the wasp-spawning baby :P
BlackAera Is it Gibs or Jibs ??
SiliconBong Gib. Why?
"Banned in Australia" the three words I was waiting for him to say the whole video. Everything gets banned here. Next thing you know we wont be allowed to have vegemite or kangaroos here. XD
Ye even imagine not having hentai what if they ban that
yeah i am living in australia and when he said that mortal kombat was banned in australia i was like wait WTF no i played it at my friends house
Are shrimps on the barbie still allowed?
I'm a little surprised OG Fallout didn't get mentioned. Those pre-rendered death animations were brutal. Also, Diablo II which was gruesome for the time.
yea fr they were brutal
You hadn't lived until you made a guy do the Burning Man Fire Dance!
Ah! the burst execution blowing chunks of chest, arms and head. Best one. And every one of them.
Even the game had a perk just to watch always the most brutal deaths. I love fallout. Hard af
@Seamus Chase damn right, he deserved that shit. good thing I had the bloody mess perk.
Props for mentioning Hotline miami and Killing floor!!! Two of my favorite games.
Sharky McShark I was glad Hotline Miami was mentioned. Very, very good game, and I haven't even played it.
Creature Plays Games Play it man! 1&2 are both fantastic!!
Sharky McShark Yep, just haven't gotten around to playing it recently. Coincidentally, I'm actually listening to Miami by Jasper Byrne right now.
Two very good games indeed.
Creature Plays Games If you have a P.C or Ps3/4 you can get both cheap. I suggest getting it for P.C simply because you get a level editor in 2
You should make more of this and less of CoD. You're really good at presenting this kind of stuff.
Well whaddaya know
I'd love to see this featured on Elders React...
hello there, chris :)
Oh no, don't let any of these videos get featured in these shit react videos.
And now we have Killing Floor 2.
(ಠ ͜ʖಠ)
and Mortal Kombat X
Not as good as the original.
Ya' bloody toss.
And DOOM
Better than the original, by the way.
So happy to see Thrill Kill on the list :)
Was that game really never released?
PikaLink91 It got cancelled. But there are near-final ROMs available pretty much everywhere. Back then everybody in my class had it for the PSX and it was the most fun 4 player fighting game ever. If you think Mario Kart ruins friendships, play this game.
@@donnerschwein ohhh Thrill Kill was awesome sick shit almost as good as Man Hunt
Cleft in twain!
Can you do 'A Breif History of Aiming'
You could start with Wolfenstein and Doom where you had to use the cursor keys to aim.
Perhaps then go on to mouse-aiming and why it was so hard to program up-down aiming as well as right-left aiming.
Why do some games have crosshairs while some don't?
Maybe even go into the evolution of hit-scan and projectile detection.
wolfenstein 3d and doom both always had mouse aiming from day 1, and were intended to be played that way. cursor key aiming was a secondary way to aim, but that became what most people used
The Punisher would have been a good one to mention as it received the same cut treatment Manhunt did.
a version of punisher had the censor removed right?
Jacob Glaze No, the UK is b/w for death scenes. There is a fan patch to download that brings it back into full colour.
I know. I still play it.

It's interesting how even though Spec ops:The line had probably the least gore in the game out of any named in this video it is by far the most disturbing, even though its more tame than most games gore-wise it had this feeling to it which really drove the point home.
UNACCEPTABLE!
Dylan Briggs 100 years dungeon!
maybe because blood and guts aren't everything to a video game? because tone and feeling are more important and do much more for the feeling of impact and violence than blood and guts and limbs flying off everywhere?
honestly i can play the old classics and get a better feel of me destroying opponents mercilessly than most of todays bloodbaths. even god of war is just meh after awhile. the enemies crowd around you and theres finishing moves and such but its all… just… not important. if theres gore in a video game it should be the extras because thats all they are in games, visual effects, cut scenes, quick time events.
i don't mind gore but when games try to out gore each other it gets unsettling but not disturbing.
What games aren't banned in Australia, bet even the Telletubbies was banned...
EHMERGHERD THOSE PROMOTE HOMOSEXUALITY! BAN!
We didn't have an 18+ rating until quite recently. Since it has been added, bans on games such as MK9 have been lifted, however ID must be presented upon purchase.
Most the games I've played aren't released in Australia... Is it just 18s?
***** I think he means that some 18+/M games are being allow not every single game that was slap with 18+ or M rating game on the face of the earth
: ) That makes more sense. : )
Ghost of Tsushima is an absolutely amazing game that has one of the most violent juxtapositions I’ve ever seen.
The entire game is BEAUTIFUL. The combat is GRUESOME. You’re cutting your enemies to ribbons, poisoning them and making them puke up their own blood, your character will literally get SHOWERED in enemy viscera. And yet, once the fight is over, you clean your sword, stow it, pull out your flute, and go back to making calming music.
I love it.
After seeing actual real world gore on the internet these seem really tame in comparison

Can you sign my petition to force critics of video game violence to watch this documentary?
So glad I happened across this channel. Gotta be the most professionally made - also one of the most interesting - series I've seen on YT.
Those Half Life 2 graphics are still amazing to this day IMO. And this game came out in 2004.
Indeed, played it twice through and I was just as impressed the second time as I was the first ;).
I was blown away by the Metal Gear Solid 2 on PS2! I still love that game! 😀

Ahoy - thank you for making these videos. They are very entertaining.
I just want to say how great Spec Ops The Line is.
Like most people I didn't even give that game a second glance as from the surface just looked like some generic Gears of War game with a modern military shooter aesthetic. I kept hearing this game pop up in discussions and finally pulled the trigger last year when I seen it on a Steam sale, and defied all expectations.
I got it for free on Steam. Is it good? Fun? I already got spoiled...
Damn it, I fell asleep again while watching your video again. The wonderful quality combined with your calm voice really makes for a great video... and a lullaby
"Bloody video games."
Hey, you watch your mouth, Ahoy!
I miss the gore from world at war
Indeed, it was a great part of the game!
And it fit it. But I don't know if I'd like it to return; I can't see how gore would fit into something like Call of Duty Ghosts.
***** What about tripping a Bouncing Betty which blow away your bottom part of the body completely, leaving only a torso?
***** one time i believe my head was shot off and i feel like the gore in multiplayer was kinda nerfed early in it's life.
There was always the kid at school who's brother had a copy of thrillkill
The stroggification part on QUAKE 4 is one of the most disturbing as well. Im in love with your videos. Great work!
Conker's Bad Fur Day was quite impressive for its time when the N64 was at the end of its life. If Conker fell from too great of a height, he exploded into a gib gore fest where you can get to see his still beating heart before using one of his squirrel tails. There is a game over sequence where his entrails are in a bag discovered by the Panther King's minions. Also don't forget the bazooka and chainsaw kills in multiplayer.
Top notch work, as always

Mighty late to the party, but I just rewatched this for the gazillionth time (I'm a huge fan of yours Stuart, your stuff is unmatched in quality, and your topics are always a great pick as well!) and I thought I might share:
The engine for Thrill Kill was used for Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style (Or Wu-Tang Clan: Taste the Pain as it says on my disc), and a lot of the finishers and whatnot are kept in that game. Good fun game, and a very interesting one at that. Not many 4-way 3D fighters that I know of, and especially none with such intricate combat as it has. It's actually a bit surprising how deep it is, and how high the skill-ceiling is.
Worth a try, if you ever have time for videogames outside research!
Blood, blood, blood... the video game "Blood" I mean.
One of the best FPSs of the mid 90s, that's for sure.
Although it's not without it's issues. Probably the most polarized of the Build Engine games. Some parts are incredibly good (the level design is among the best), some parts are incredibly bad (the difficulty curve is effectively backwards).
And Blood 2 The Chosen
Fuck Bood 2, nothing gory abbout that. (Gibbing humans with dual pistols, the fuck???)
Quite surprised that that Duke Nukem 3d didn't show up.
Maybe he's saving it for A Brief History of Sexism. Oh, the games that are gonna be on that one!

Even So, DN3D is rather tame by today's standards.

Thank you! I've been trying to remember the name of Chiller for a while and my Google skills were lacking. My parents (understandably) forbid me from playing so, of course, I had to sneak onto it every chance I got. I also don't know why I haven't seen this sooner because I know I've been subbed to you for a while.

1:53 to 1:56
That went from "oh that's pretty brutal" to "JESUS CHRIS WHAT DID I JUST WITNESSED"
How is violence in a game going to force someone to be violent? If you can't handle playing a video game, don't play it. Just like cigarettes or booze. Can't handle it? Don't do it.
who cares about violence? that would be absurd! though games do make you sexist... and also violent.
what are you talking about? anita said they did, as did the german mainstream press, so it must be true.
You know there were actual studies that supported the notion that games could induce violence. Of course, those were all bollocks but in the 90s and very early 2000's people bought it. That aside I don't think people care about films as much, because films are utterly passive. You park your ass somewhere and you watch violence happen. But films don't put the choice of who, or if someone dies in your hands. So the public got up in arms about it.
Yeah but cigarettes and booze are legitimately bad for you
Devil's Advocate how do games make you sexist and violent that's the most bullshit I've heard in a while
I'm surprised Max Payne 3 and No More Heroes weren't mentioned here.
I didn't find Max Payne 3 to be gory.
This is a very informative and surprisingly unbiased video. I like it.

Fallout: Tactics, Ripper and combat shotgun kills. So satisfying...
Nah, Fallout 2, Bozar and the Vindicator. The sound when killing the Enclave soldiers... That powered casing led me to believe that they get DESTROYED in it c;

Am I the only one that thinks fps games should bring back a certain amount of dismemberment? As much as I love rag doll effects I kinda miss how in certain games like cod world at war allowed you to dismember people with explosives or a shotgun
I wish they could still do that in cod games now. I hate the same stupid death animations

Keep in mind this video is 2 years old, likely shortly before both Countries (Germany AND Australia) Loosened up Video Game Restrictions
Well, Punisher The TPS video game is one of my all time bloody favorites. Just can't deny all those brutal executions and interrogations! :D
Awesome video bro 👍
that no Russian mission was so fucking fun
I know it can't really be classified as "gore", but the scariest video game weapon I've ever used was the Particle Cannon from Wolfenstein '09. Just... poof. Nobody complained since you're killing Nazis but I remember just feeling shocked. That's also why I'm psyched for The New Order as well, can't wait to see what they did with that.
With "poof" you mean the same effect of the gluon gun from Half-Life (it interacts with the object's inner stability by firing gluons [really existent particles that interact with one of the four forces of the universe, strong interaction, the one that holds the nulceus of every atom togheter], killing the target by dissolving all the connections between its very ATOMS. This means vaporizing the target, and the guy that gives the gun to you, a fellow scientist, can't even bring him with using the weapon, so he gives Gordon the gun because he has no problem using it) ?
tyrrarius In the words of the classic games...
GET PHYSCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved your video on graphics! I'm really interested in the proliferation of gore in video games and what, if any, effect that's had from a sociological standpoint; unfortunately my PTSD told me to nope right out of this video within the first 30 seconds 😅
How are you this awesome so consistently.
