    I rarely comment on videos but I figured out this exact same thing last year and it was life changing. I putt very well (at least I though I did) except I would never get the perfect line over line putt an could never really understand why and would miss a lot of easy straight putts. So I decided to start opening and closing the face on the practice green one day thinking I have to be putting crooked and as I started opening the putter the line got tighter and tighter until it was perfect. Sure enough I’ve been putting with a closed face for years and still managed a 6 handicap lol. After figuring this out last summer I went from a 6 to a 1.3 handicap and started shooting rounds under par as well and it gave me the confidence to feel like I can make everything.

    A friend taught me this move years ago. Changed my putting stats ever since. His tip was " line the face up square, the open it very slightly until you can just begin to see the face". Never knew why this works until your explanation here. Try it folks. It works.

    Amazing tip! I was stroking the ball on the toe consistently. By opening the club head a touch, I now stroke the middle of the face every time. Making more putts, and getting very close to my target. Thank you, Matt!

    Exactly the same issue! I have a Klemm Stand-Up Putter and discovered this exact same issue last winter. If I open the club face up just a tiny bit... the line on my ball rolls perfect. If I try and square it up, the line wobbles. Crazy! Glad you are able to help so many with this great tip!

    No wonder I keep missing putts left when I use the line. Was beginning to think my eyes are gone. Huge relief, thanks buddy.

    This was the biggest discovery in my own putting. I thought it was the way i was seeing the ball, coupled with the misunderstanding of the Square to Square stroke, versus a slightly arcing Toe Flow stroke.
    Different putters, different ball markings, different stroke, stance and grip adjustments.
    Using Blast Motion i was able to discover my problem. I was setting up "perfectly" and making my 6' putts when i kept an open face angle of .6 to 1.2 Open. When i would hit it with a 0.0 face angle I would pull it left severely. In fact, I would rarely get below 0.0 with a closed face.
    For a few days I would open the clubface slightly at address, and "release" the putter head. BAMMO! Impact face angle average for 200 putt sessions at 0.0, and making an extremely high percentage of putts into a 3" cup.
    Thanks for the reminder in the video.

    • @jonathanlawson5812
      @jonathanlawson5812 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BH-gh6qm Do you have a blast motion?
      For me;
      1. I line up the ball to the target.
      2. Set up a putting mirror.
      As I move my eyes towards the ball. I stop when I see "the line" going into the center of the cup.
      4. I take notice where my eyes are on the putting mirror.
      5. From that point I putt.
      6. Dial in my stroke to have a 0.0 face angle.
      Then i can take note of the degree the putter opens and closes.

    I tried using a line on my ball years ago but discarded the method because you have to mess around too much trying to get the ball to lay right if you’re on a hill or bumpy green. That adds doubt and is disaster. However, I’d like to share a technique that seems to help my speed that combines mechanics and feel. What I do is use my right foot for a calibration point for my back stroke. Slightly inside for 3 footers, middle for 10 footers, outside foot for 20 footers, say. Then use swing effort to fine tune the distance. For long ones I will guess outside of foot backswing and then easy, medium, hard effort. So, estimate backswing distance and swing effort, make a practice stroke, then putt. It takes a lot doubt out of putting because you know exactly what you want to do over the putt. I feel this has improved my lag putting. Also, I’d like to add that I putt by rocking my shoulders, no wrists. Not sure it matters for this technique, but that’s what I do.

      I use the very same method you describe and have used it for a long, long time. I’m generally a very solid lag putter. Been struggling with short ones lately, missing a lot left just as many of the commenters described. Will want to try this slightly open putter face and see how it goes. BTW I play to a 6 - 8 hdcp most courses these days. Thanks.

    Hm…. This is absolutely amazing. Diagnosed my problem exactly AND makes sense to allow for the natural arc of putter swing. Makes me wonder if when lines up target to line on ball to line on putter seems the window of perfect strike at impact is very small. Slightly Opening putter face seems to make the required correction to allow a smoother on target putter path swing. Amazing. Thank you Matt!

    Honest truth: Tried this technique today for the first time -- dropped par putts on first two attempts and both on punched greens. Rolled accurately all day. The only problem is that here in Colorado, it might be my last round of the season. Good way to finish -- but it's going to be a while before I get to try it again. Thanks for yet another great tip, Matt!

    I don’t normally try and align my ball lines but when I picked up a mallet putter I noticed this trend as well. Could just be stroke habit, but by opening the face slightly and almost aiming just off center I would end up hitting a purer center putt that would go smoother and straighter vs aiming dead center and unopened.

    I had that exact same problem when I tried to use the “Line” method on the ball, but it never worked for me bc I was always aimed to the left. It drove me crazy! In theory, that method should be flawless, but it’s not unless you can figure out how to get your eyes to trust that look of the putter being slightly open. I’m going to practice what you just showed me today and see if I can figure it out. Thank you.

    I try to pick the angle I'm going to strike my putt by reading the slope and then imagine the line pretty much the same way as you see when you are using your trak monitor on your sim. I do have my ball marked also but only use the line to help me point in the right direction, makes sense to me but maybe not others. Keep up the great content and have a great weekend!

    Okay Matt; You touched on you’re aim which I’m going to try. I use a copper two ball odyssey. Here is what blows my game. I play a course with thicker greens that haven’t been rolled so it takes me about five holes to get zeroed in, then I play a course with extremely fast greens, well you can figure the outcome. I end up three putting a lot of the greens. Yes I do get to the course early and practice but sometimes the practice green isn’t the same speed. Golf, it’s a four letter word anyway you cut it. Love ya brother.

    Toe weighted vs center weighted might be worth mentioning too. I see some golfers putting straight back and through with toe weighted putters and vice-versa.
    I'm right eye dominant, so my LOS is mostly with my right eye. I'm right handed and I open my stance ever slightly. I use a center weighted mallet putter. Straight back and hopefully straight through!

    This was/is my exact problem as well!! Confirmed by playing partners and video! Standing over the ball, it appears lined up correctly. From behind, I’m clearly aligned left of target. When I simply open the face a little bit it appears right of target and my subconscious shuts the face down during the stroke. My solution: I got rid of the line on my putter. Use a sight dot now.

    Fitter at club champion showed me this the other day during my putter fitting. It's the lie angle of the head and the curvature of the ball and the angle with which your eyes are over the ball. They're typically not directly over it, so what looks directly in line to you is actually aligned left (or right for a lefty putter).

    Retired eye doctor here. If you are a player who uses line to set up the direction of your putt (like this video), you should know your dominant eye. Shut the non dominant eye and align the putter and golf ball line with one eye. You will be a lot more accurate with the alignment.

    I find it best to pick out a mark to aim at somewhere near the ball and putt over that to a distance I think is where the break is to the hole. Pre-putt, I look down the line and practice swing a bit to get an idea of how far I need to roll the ball, then stand over the ball aiming over the mark, look at the hole, look at the mark and stoke the putt.

    I guess that everyone is concerned with how they see the line of the putt. I thought to control my backstroke of my putt and gain confidence about the putter being straight back that I should follow the putter head with my eyes. I’m beginning to develop a routine before hitting my putt. Maybe a retractable ruler can be placed on the green, creating a line that’s parallel to the putting line.

    You might benefit from a straight hosel putter (good for opening the club face) or even a slanted hosel putter (neutral club face) as opposed to the plumber’s hosel you have (good for closing the club face).
    Making this one change could transform your putting. You would then be able to line up “straight” when you have the correct hosel for your putting stroke.

    • @aaronh.917
      @aaronh.917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plumbers neck is good if you tend to leave the putter face open at impact? Vs double bend would be for someone that is too closed with their putter at impact?

    • @JosephPingleton
      @JosephPingleton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronh.917
      Hi Aaron,
      Yes. If you tend to leave the face open at impact, get a Plumber’s hosel putter, like the Newport 2. If you tend to be too closed at impact, get a straight hosel putter. If you have a very balanced stroke, get a slanted hosel putter like the Newport 2.5.
      Most people struggle closing the club face, so a Plumber’s hosel is most common to compensate for this.
      If you have a good stroke, you may find you’ll pull putts or aim too far left if you have a Plumber’s hosel putter.

    Grabbed a bloodline after your video. I'm never going back.

    Wanna hear something funny? I had the exact same problem. So I stopped using the line on the ball altogether and when I respot the ball, I am looking at the whitest, no markings part of the ball as possible. I have to say though that I'm going to try your method.

    This is why I use a Ping 1-A the lines mess me up big time because of how my brain works if I hear the right ping I know I'm on line I'm not the greatest putter but I can get pretty darn close

    This has me wondering if this is the reason my natural miss putting is a pull.

    The day I started putting with a line was the day my putting shot through the roof. My ball goes where the line is pointing, no more leaving my body up to aiming.

    I thought those standing putters were considered illegal equipment according to USGA & PGA Rules???

    just the opposite for me. I always was scared to death with those little two-footers then I closed the face just a fraction and started making a higher percentage of putts. The longer putts started falling also.

    This seems crazy, but I'm willing to try it. Really scared it will build a bad habit though.

    It does not make any sense to play a put with a locked up lower body. A put is a stroke like any other stroke. Learn how to use the centrifugal effect from the body rotation e.g. pivot and keep your arms and hands still. Once learned, you have perfect distance control. From distance control comes directional control. Read Percy Boomer if you need more info.

    this is why i can't have a line on the ball. i feel most comfortable with lining the putter up with the line i like.

    Don't laugh, Matt, but what you were doing is too technical for me...within reason, I look and line up by the lay of the green as it relates to where the hole is with my Odyssey 7 (which I've seen you use the putter I use).

    So wouldn't this be the same problems with all of your clubs then?
