I just became a Patreon supporter because I am loving the work you are doing. I can't wait for more coming up, I have been watching a lot of these videos lately. I would like to request Ettins if they haven't been done yet.
Going back to previous editions and planar creatures, I am curious about your take on hordlings. Also, there have been a lot of variants on manscorpions, which are particularly iconic, yet underused foe.
Hi AJ. I love goblins but never used Norkers as I cannot stop associating them with the hideous original art in the Fiend Folio. Fortunately, your videos continue to inspire, and I may be soon using a swarm of these little bastards. "Like a rolling tide they came over the hil screetching and roaring, the shadowy forest collapsing in thier wake".
Your video just inspired me to homebrew my own 5E Thoul (after considerable digging for their nonexistent lore), closely followed by a half-thoul (half-hobgoblin) playable race.
Norker! Haven't seen them in forever (I don't recall the 4e version). Gonna use these in a 13th age game, thank you for the inspiration. I know you dislike the Nilbog, but picture a single one with levels of warlock or sorcerer, possibly with a group it controls, more of a leader/named enemy than just a pack of the little weirdos. Also Magic Man from Adventure Time came to mind as an inspiration, too, if that reference means anything to you.
heh, I hope it doesn't bother people that I am not fond of the Nilbog, I don't hate them, in fact, I think I will have to use one in my home game, just to get an informed opinion.
Hey I didn't create them!; no offense taken, I just had a thought or two to use them in a (possibly?) less annoying haha gotcha kind of way, since it's more forgivable when big bads have those weirder defenses. Bottom line is that your in-depth creature analyses are thought provoking/inspiring.
I want to see you do deites, no specific individuals, just the lore of what and why they are. Norkers are great take on goblins, but they are rarely used. love ALL of these vids.
Keep in mind that these variants come from a diverse set of background settings, so some are Eberron, some are Forgotten Realms, some are Greyhawk.. they don't all roam around on the one world, basically, however they are goblinoids, and I thought it was fitting to give them a mention to round off the goblinoids as a group.
since there are so many kinds of goblins would it be possible for there to be goblins that while still green resemble halflings and could be defined as sexy looking the females at least?
Well I did mention the Grodd goblins as being civilised, so, maybe, but you don't see a lot of half goblinoids, so perhaps they are not that compatible, biologically? In any event, I use female goblins from time to time as excellent NPC's in my campaigns, one notable Female goblin was Krandy, a hard nosed, provocative and take no shit bar maid who basically ran the tavern the player characters managed to come into possession of, and within a few weeks, the place was a very lucrative, but chaotic establishment of questionable legality. In the basement was a permanent young wizard student's rave party, the tap room saw a roaring trade in highly addictive onion dip (see video on Oozes for details on the Pink Delicious Ooze) and upstairs was an elite bordello and fledgeling thieves guild. Krandy was not entirely unattractive, but yeah, a very dangerous individual.
Why are bakemono being confused with goblins here? They are two vastly different kinds of creatures from different parts of the world, they don't even line up with the Korean Goblins. Is it really that hard to make them their own creatures?
Been binging on these vids, used to rifle through my AD&D monster manual all the time (way back when). I'm learning a ton about the more obscure lore and ways that monsters think, live and fight. Appreciated the overview of the different subspecies besides the Norker. Was kind of missing that with the Intellect Devourer video, I always thought there was just the one kind until I saw the image of the variants. Anyhow, subbed with all notifications enabled & looking forward to whatever comes next. Are you planning to do some Spelljammer critters eventually?
If you have specific requests, just ask away, I add requested monsters and subjects to a list I work my way through.. it is fairly large, and will take a long time, but eventually I get them done.
AJ Pickett The Zodar have always intrigued me. A big question mark to me whenever I think about D&D races. You mentioned wanting to discuss Neogi at some point. A hearty"yes plz" to that.
probably cover Korobakuru in the explores series, as they are exclusive to Kara-Tur. Wilden, hmmm, pity they were not included in Volo's guide (I mean, Firbolg, really?), perhaps they were not deemed to be popular enough as a player character race? Anyway, a clue to who is next.. a race that is quite literally broken. :)
Could you provide a list of the various types in this presentation. I have poor hearing so enunciation of uncommon names sometimes gives me problems in audio playback. I'd like you to include "subtitles" in the pictures that you display if possible that names the picture you've presented (were possible). I'm enjoying all of the collective videos you've made and am looking forward to viewing all of them. I use your concepts/descriptive narratives and gaming advice frequently in my 5E games as the DM. I definitely appreciate your support in the community.
Amitok: White-furred Arctic hobgoblins. Bakemono: (Originally a shape-shifting Obake from Japanese folklore.) Bakemonos are the “goblins” of the Shadowlands-small, powerfully muscled humanoids with the intelligence and the temperament of vicious attack dogs. Bhuka: Good-aligned consummate survivors, with many physical adaptations to help them thrive in the deserts.D&D Monsters Blue: A subrace of goblins with an innate knack for psionics. Their bluish skin sets them apart from other goblins. Bugbear: The biggest and strongest of the goblinoids, bugbears are more aggressive than their smaller relatives. Dekanter Goblin: Dekanter goblins are vicious, cunning opponents with large, rhinolike horns. Forestkith Goblin: Nocturnal hunters, also known as kith. Goblin: The smallest, most common of the goblinoids. Goblyn: Goblyns are created by curses, powerful evil magic items, and certain spells. The transformation causes them to forget their former lives, turn evil, and become slavishly devoted to their master. Grodd Goblin: Offshoot goblins trapped in a demiplane who gained civilized ways and built a great city with the help of a dragon. Hobgoblin: Larger, far more aggressive than goblins, they wage a perpetual war with other humanoids, particularly elves. Koalinth: A marine species of hobgoblin, similar to the land dwelling one in many respects, but having gills and able to live in fresh or salt water. Nilbogs: A race of magical goblinoids that are healed by receiving damage and are damaged by healing spells. The name is “goblin” spelled backward, a reference to this reversal of effects. The exact connection between the nilbog and the llort, which shares its power to heal by receiving damage, is unknown. Norker: Short, gruff goblinoids who possess a thick segmented hide and long canine teeth. Snow Goblin: Shaggy humanoids with large throat sacs that they use to call to one another over long distances. Thoul: A strange merging of a hobgoblin, a troll, and a ghoul. Varag: Faster, considerably stronger, and more primitive than typical goblins, these have merely a predatory cunning. They often find work as mercenary scouts and raiders for hobgoblin warbands. They stand about seven feet tall when fighting, but typically move and run on all fours. Vril: A race bred by drow to act as soldiers. They have violet skin with tiger stripes and can produce and are immune to sonic attacks.
Awesome. Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm enjoying your videos and taking lots of notes. I'm an avid wiki researcher but you come up with some very good details in your presentation. I especially like the parts where you make suggestions of usage of creatures and possible scenarios. Very helpful and much appreciated.
Are norkers closer to goblins or hobgoblins. I'm porting a number of goblinoids from 3e (Worghest, Dekanter, Goblin, Varag) and creating a couple new goblinoids (Norker Worghest called Norghest) and wanted to know if they could be made into Dekanter Norkers like Goblins or varags like hobgoblins
Hey hey, Nilbog is perfectly fine, if you are playing a Elf who's father gave her that nickname as a child for her pranks. 😝 oh Teresa was great as a character. Need to play with the group again was fun.
What if a norker became a murder hobo I'd love to see a murder hobo video.they get pickpocket skills deals on tavern drinks.sticky fingers means extra coin.
Aha, thanks for that, perhaps they are like the Hyosube.. running around and stealing eggplants. Japanese yokai could easily have a whole youtube lore channel completely devoted to them.
I don't like using a lot of the minor goblinoids. Using goblins but they live in cold place or under water seems lazy, why not use it as an opportunity to create new monsters. For example I made my own race of amphibious humanoids who have a unique culture, societal structure and nature which I think are much more interesting that goblins but they have gills.
I fully endorse this, in fact, I would go further and say never use a monster listing without adding some individual quirk to it. Unless it is a modron of course.
So the nilbog being CR 1 is a LIE, IT'S A DAMN LIE, mostly because I remember how a bunch of us in AL (all levels 5-6) kept failing our saves and having to praise that fucker while a bunch of little kids it had mind controlled kept beating the shit out of us (and we couldn't do much about it, because none of us wanted to beat up a kid.) The dice were not with us that night. I distinctly remember my cleric calling the nilbog a "valuable member of the community" when he failed his save. That is a damn lie and I regret every minute of it.
I'm pretty sure the reason Nilbog's are "stupid" to you is probably because they're likely a joke race. They're probably based upon the goblins from the "Nilbog" village from the infamous B-movie "Troll 2." You might not dislike them so much after watching this movie...it's hillarious!
Actually, the first time I saw them was in White Dwarf magazine issue 6 (1978), but Roger More was merely commenting on Nick Best's creation from some earlier appearance. Troll 2 was created in 1990. Originally, Nilbogs were not explained at all, they were just a nasty trick to spring on the players, but the modern listing and explanation of them are vastly improved.
Even after 4 years this seems to be the only video on Norkers on TH-cam.
Thank you for your many valuable contributions.
Whenever I watch these before work, which is most mornings, I envy the lifestyle of these types.
I'm glad that WotC didn't get a chance to screw up the goblinoid offshoots listed. But will admit to curiosity about 5e stat blocks and player options
I just became a Patreon supporter because I am loving the work you are doing. I can't wait for more coming up, I have been watching a lot of these videos lately. I would like to request Ettins if they haven't been done yet.
ETTINS! I totally forgot to do Ettins, thank you!
AJ Pickett Role-playing two arguing heads is an opportunity that is way too good to pass up.
i'd love to see two players try to play "one" Ettin
I like the new story to nilbog as normal goblin posest by spiritual entity or shard of dead goblin god.
I suppose they have their comedic value.
Thats mostly the reason trow one in the bunch and fun chaos and moment of confusion from the payers front but never in large groups, only one if ever.
Going back to previous editions and planar creatures, I am curious about your take on hordlings. Also, there have been a lot of variants on manscorpions, which are particularly iconic, yet underused foe.
I am interested in the good desert goblins. Can you tell me more about them?

Ecology of Gods, is in the works.. it's part of a larger project that will be kicking off soon.
A Thool would be my pick to bring into a edge lord DnD session. if I had to deal with metagaming Mary sues. thanks for telling me about them.
The Thool is a creature of Mystara.
With that little healing factor and raspy voice , if you gave the norkers natural bone claws they would be little wolverines.
Can you please do a video over more goblinoeds
What is the song in the beginning of the video, please and thank you
Hmm. How many goblinoids are there?
Do you have a mug with the channel logo on it? Not to dive into merchandise quandaries but...
Was not aware that there was this amount of variations, Volos guide that had a part with them did not really express this.

what is the Into song
I put all the intro music stuff on a playlist called "The music used" just so you can listen to the original songs ;)
Is the Barghest goblinoid?
No, it's a fiend, a devil, created specifically to do nasty things to goblinoids.
ohhhhhhhh
Norker cross breed with a goblin from Mirrodin would be interesting
