@@JohnAltenburg yeah such a project can be seriously deadly in the "wrong" hands. The other thing is, it thakes soooo much time, to get it into perfection. Sometimes it is almost depressing😅 i still after almost 400 hours of working on that thing, search and find problems in the configurations.. its like a never ending Story...but that is also the nice thing at such a project🙂

I would recommend a GU81M the version without the M have a internal capacitor and i heard sometimes about, that these can fail pretty quick in such really hard VTTC applications, when something goes wrong... but i have really little knowledge about the gu81. but the GU81 and GU81M are absolute Tanks, and can be pushed really hard when the circuit is good tuned😁
@@Jonodrew1286 yeah in this application, the anode peak voltage can reach about 8 Kv thats more than the double rating😅 In this case the circuit has to be really good in tune, because when something goes wrong, the tubes grids can get damaged or destroyed by internal arcing in the tube. Yes in my beginnings i had 2 or 3 arcovers betwen the primary and secondary because i was really off with the tuning (the primary was tuned way to high) That arcing can happen also when the tuning gets off to much by secondary loaddown of the big arcs. Its good to tune the primary frequency (over the humb) 10% lower than the secondary.. so its getting in tune by itself when the arcs getting bigger and loading down the secondary.

Nice beautiful coil, Just get some ventilation going in a enclosed space as Ozone and Nitrogen Dioxide might build up. I would love to make my own coil one day. Would also be neat with some sound modulation. Kinda looks like a burning bush.

Now like you said, i have to open all my Windows, before i power this thing up, because even my big room fills up instantly with the gasses. Yeah try it!😀 it takes really some time, but it is a really nice project! Im absolute addictet to it since the last 2 months😄 Sound Modulation would be really cool! But in that powerrating it is impossible to do that with these tubes, because they running on their edge of overheating, even with one way rectifier...when i imagine, they would get that power with smoothed DC, i think they would melt in seconds😅
really very cool the gu-81m never disappoints with these specifications you could try replacing the gu-81m with a gu-5b making some slight modifications and you would have even more power

But i think when i tune my setup really good and squeeze everything out of the two gu81m i will get enough 😅 i only have 3phase 16A Power avaiable and im a littlebit limited of my eighbours living under me...i think they will not really like me by crashing their Internet while doing 1,5Meter arcs at home😆

@antoniocannizzaro7032 yeah these big old Transmitter tubes are getting more and more rare. I can find many on eBay, but they have to get send from ukraine or romania... im not Sure about to try it. Yeah i could run 6 MOT's on 2 phases, or winding a custom transformer for 2 phase application.. install a bigger cable to my workbench and get 25A breakers 😄 then i could easily push the gu-5b to its Limits.. but i think its a littlebit risky with my neighbours...and its not my house😅

@@JulianMakes good question🙂 At first. NEVER Touch it!! Especially when its ab big tesla coil. But you can Touch the arcs of a coil, that is build like that schematic.. Direct to the skin, it would burn you a bit.. when you do it too long, your nerves might be damaged over time and you got really deep RF burns. It should not shock you badly, because the frequency is so high, your nerve system will not react to that. But... when you Touch the arc, you will load down the secondary coil. When you have a badly tuned System, this can throw it completely out of tune and the possibility is high, that you get arcing over from the secondary to the primary coil. This would allow to get you in contact with the (in my case 8KV) powersupply at low frequency.. This would shock you really badly or in Bad case, deadly.
Just curious, what would be the results if you put a coreless coil above and near the ark, could you transmit the power to another receiver or loop back the power to source?
@@andrewthuku2638 yes for sure this will work🙂 but it will be extremely inefficient... also looping it back to the source would not doing anything. The "pickup" coil has to have the exact resonance frequency of my tesla coil🙂
I have 2 MOTs series in, series out, no ballast, pulls close to 30A at 240VAC using 10Ga wire. Massive arch welding static gap, but coil only has 5 inch sparks. :(
@@solarsynapse what did you mean with "series in and series out"? 30A on average or is this the current at switching it on? When your MOT's draw that much current on average, they are just almost like shorted out. You definitely need a Ballast, and need to solve other problems in the circuit. Maybe not tuned right? I got around 1 Meter arcs with my SGTC 7 years ago. I used a 4 MOT powersupply
@@marvswelt2587 120VAC primaries in series connected to 240VAC. Secondaries in series for roughly 46KV out. Close to 30A when arching. Gets hot fairly quick.

What capacitors with what capacitance do you use? 2 MOT setup in a static spark gap teslacoil delivers not enough voltage. It might working, but the short high current arc is not ideal, especially for a static gap
@@solarsynapse at first, it is much easier with sparkgap coils, to have around 8 to 15kv (or even more) and using multiple spark gaps, with a fan, that blows off the arc and cooling down the sparkgap.
@MichelleRichards-f7t It is actually not that loud, but yeah also not quiet😄 It depends how good it is in tune and how hard i drive the tubes. But its more like you Hit hard with your hand on a pillow.. when out of tune, its can be like a clap. 😊
Be aware of objects picking up the field and arcing. My camera tripod was about six feet away and I didn't notice there was an arc from the legs which burnt the carpet. It could be bad if that happened inside a wall or ceiling.
@@IanDarley yes, thats actually a thing not many people care about! I always stay for a while, after Tests with my VTTC Because im really afraid about that. I have seen that first some months ago in an video, someone had a toroid leaning against a Radiator, and it arced over.

@janno288 yes exactly. First i tought i had 4uF but that was a brainfart😅 its actually just 2uF Or 2,5 now, because i found some old microwave ovens on eBay for 5€ But yeah... have to invest for much more... 8 caps are on their way now, so i get it up to 4,5uF in 2 weeks when they arrive.

There are some people out there, touching these arcs with their hands... i personally dont like to do it (and never done it) because, when something goes technically wrong at that moment, this of course can shock you really bad and can be deadly. But in normal cases, the frequency is too high and our nerve system and muscles are not able to react/contract at these frequencies. But you can overheat your outer and inner tissue by getting the arcs for too long on your body parts. It is known as RF burning and also can damage the nerve System. So yes this stuff is extremely dangerous in the wrong hands... The power supply at otherhand will kill people instantly. This is no joke.

But the way to get there is really long and is a really good practise in experimenting. This is nothing you can just build off a circuit diagram and it will work perfectly... this is something you need to understand complex connections and interactions.

@ I have seen their plate and grid power pushed beyond their ratings - have you ever had to contend with arcs between primary and secondary 🤔
