- Israel's Supreme Court has ruled the country must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men. The move puts an end to a decades old system that gave the group broad exemptions from military service. The ruling sparked protests today among members of the ultra Orthodox community.
Critics in Israel's secular Jewish majority have long been calling for the exemptions to end, saying it was discriminatory. The calls have only grown louder during the eight-month Gaza War as Israel has called up tens of thousands of soldiers.

Israel has universal conscription. All men and women must serve in the armed forces. Except the Haredim (Ultra Orthodox).
Since the Haredim are the source of most of Israel’s problems, it’s really messed up that they are the only ones who don’t serve.

It's not even remotely fair that all of the Ultra Orthodox students get to spend all their time studying Torah while the only people defending Israel are the secular youth. How many Torah students does it take to keep Israel holy? If I was a more secular student 's parents I think I'd find an alternative type of Torah study school to send my kids to so they could be exempt too. Something that ALL secular youth in Israel need to do as soon as they can is get married and take a sacred vow to have at least 6-8 kids each even if they have to adopt or have IVF. Otherwise the next generation is going to be living in a country where 90% of the population is Ultra Orthodox and living under their rules.

I agree. At the same time, the Haredim (Ultra Orthodox) are the primary drivers of expansion, Arab expulsion, and the removal of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In the very long list of Israeli military operations against Arabs since 1948, the Haredim have been the ones pushing it.
They expect every Israeli man and woman to serve in the military, and die for their political position, but they do not allow themselves to serve. Everyone except them are expected not to send their sons and daughters to fight and die.

I notice several conflating Zionism with the Chasidim. Ultra Orthos are not in most cases Zionists. They believe in the tenets of the Torah and the ten commandments are at the top of the list.
