In this video, I take the viewer on a tour of a recently added "food desert" in west Knox County, Tennessee. This one has a Sam's Club, Walmart Superstore, Far East Asian Market, El Mercado, and a Dollar General Store, plus several reasonably priced convenience stores. The thing is, unless they do $2 million in business per year, they don't count and the communities closest to them are declared "food deserts." The new definition drops drops the proximity requirement from 1 mile to .5 mile. So even though there is a Walmart that meets zoning requirements for a massive parking lot, nobody can live within .5 miles of the place anyway.
Recently I did a "ground truth" examination of a Knoxville, TN "food desert" that meets the original definition, yet it contained FIVE grocers.
The Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission even created a website that includes that "food desert," but they called it KnoxFood.Org and they don't tell anybody that it is an MPC website, focused on bringing in big business supermarkets and ignoring the food access that residents already have. More on that here:

This episode of Modern Marvels, "Supermarkets" defines a supermarket as more than $2 million in business too www.imdb.com/ti...
