There may or may not be an objective meaning in life, but there’s a subjective meaning and that is what I personally love. I love my family, I love my friends, I love people, I love nature, I love music, which means I love this world. Doesn’t mean there isn’t despair and cruelty but it’s still beautiful cruel world. And I rather experience the beauty and love even with the cruelty, than to never see and feel the beauty at all. But the individual has to accept the love and beauty into their hearts.

This is a great story because it parallels in several ways to our own lives. For example, we are told from a young age that you need to go to school, get good grades, go to college, get a good job, make money, etc., but we never stop to think about "why?". In the story, the turtles continue on their routine, with the eldest teaching the youngest how to think and what to do, but only one questioned the system. Overall, I really like the message of the story, as it's great food for thought.

The true essence of Buddhism is not that existence is punishment, but that holding onto illusions will lead to desire which will lead to suffering. One doesn't overcome existence, one overcomes suffering. No Buddhist tenant is based on an actual existence of reincarnation, but that the concept of self is itself a ghost that we keep trying to make real, or incarnate. If one lets go of this concept of self, they see that life is indeed an enigma; not a punishment, not a gift, but a mystery. We keep trying to place a fixed description and a set aim for the self, not realizing that is a bad way to approach a mystery. Buddhism aims to reset the psyche to that of a child. A child has so many disadvantages and still must pull itself from the muck to becoming a functioning human being. A child is born with limited mobility and communication skills in a society built around communication and speed. Children are born to parents who at best will give their all to protect them and stand a good statistical chance of still failing, and at worst will abandon them to forces of the world. Yet still, even in cases of neglect, abuse and exposure to the harshest of lives environments, we still observe people who as the turtle put it, seem delusional and seem to fully appreciate the reward system of their society. However, this is a natural process of mathematics. A system could not arise from a context within which no one stood to perceive some advantage. In other words, value is a way to get from point A to B, but not a system for guaranteeing we will enjoy what we find at point B. In this way the enigmatic nature of life is less obstructive. If we value something, it doesn't mean we like it, love it, or it fulfills us in some way. Instead, to value something means we are going to spend resources on investigating a specific idea. Values when used without the illusions which are associated with ego attachment are completely different from the way we use it now. Without ego attachment, we can still value objects, people, ideas and all without becoming too attached or being too aloof. It doesn't happen overnight, but it is about valuing things in an honest way. Being honest with what you can do, and then by being honest about what you are doing. Taking time to put these things into perspective won't solve every problem, but will over time, encourage a way of thinking where value is defined through honesty with self, rather than using what we value redefining
Reducing human life to some sort of science experiment is not the aim of Buddhism, but there is a way in which we are encouraged to cultivate a more scientific approach to looking at the inner world. This is so that the outer world can be experienced in a more artistic way. If we reduce our outer world to equations and symbols we are doomed. As the emotional aspect of our world would be in control of how we respond to these preconceived "objective perspectives on nature". While many things in the world can be quantified, the beauty of the world is not found in counting the rain drops at they fall, but in simply listening to the music of the taps of water droplets. The scientific in this view point, enhances the artistic. To take a scientific approach to the mind means studying the mind, and in a systematic way. Work with a therapist, a guru, a psychiatrist, a mentor; anyone to help the mind overcome the numerous blocks it will inevitably have. The mind cannot be too different from the environment which it is simulating. Hence, our various psychological flaws are to be expected as hills and valleys which define our landscape. The world is not smooth, uniform, homogenous. The world is fraught with strange oddities, chaos and ridiculous extremes. So too the mind is a delicate package of all these things.

Stacking the burden of pain on their shoulders and moving on. Consciousness/self awareness is the greatest horror of all. We have evolved to be able to understand we are suffering. Now with nothing to rail against. Nothing to fight. Nothing to suffer for and enough bread and cake to hardly do more than go forth with the continuation of the species all we can think is that none of its worth it.

I just think that the reason why humans can’t solve big problems like poverty, illnesses, or wars is because they’re too busy caring about themselves and their own kids. Unfortunately, there is no go back button and if there was then I would choose to go back to not existing. I would feel no joy but no pain either and I wouldn't miss joy because I wouldn't exist to know it but this in itself creates a paradox because if you could go back to not existing then because you wouldn't exist you wouldn't know if you wanted to exist or not until you were born so unless you could take your knowledge and experiences with you back to none existences then you couldn't make that decision and even to have that knowledge and those experiences you have to exist to have them but you can't have them unless you exist. It would solve one problem with no children to come into the world to suffer but would make humans feel empty and dead inside because we wouldn't be able to fill our natural desire to have children to take care of. You could say it's selfish to bring kids into this world as messed up as it is now and days and they would have a miserable life if you did but then you'd have the misery and longing for yourself and that emptiness inside, unfortunately one person's happiness is another person's misery. Schopenhauer's expression is more concise: "After copulation, man hears the Devil's laughter."

      Can u explain this quote?

    • @tonbridgeroy
      @tonbridgeroy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +211

@@dumplinglover8042 Arthur Schopenhauer was a philospher who believed that life itself was ultimately nothing more than pointless suffering and therefore advocated that the best course of action for human beings was not to reproduce themselves. Therfore in this context the quote "Directly after copulation the devil's laughter is heard" would mean that directly after a person's conception, (which follows soon after the male orgasm) the suffering begins for another human being in the form of a fertilised egg because, (according to Schopenhaur) life equates with pointless suffering. Therefore "The Devil", (who supposedly delights in the suffering of man) laughs because as one man reaches a futile and fleeting ecstasy of pleasure, (male orgasm) has also inadvertantly created another life of suffering in the form of another human being, (which causes "The Devil" to laugh because man's suffering is his pleasure). I assume Schopenhaur meant "The Devil" in his quote to be taken figuratively and not literally as I believe he was himself an atheist - therefore would not literally believe in the actual existence of "The Devil".
I guess ultimately only the individual can decide whether their individual suffering was worth their existence or whether given a choice they would have preferred not to have been born but for obvious reasons it is an entirely academic discussion but one that might inform the individual as to the wisdom of having their own children or whether to decide not to have any children.
I guess that this is the ulitimate paradox - in so much only the individual concerned can decide whether on balance they feel their life was worth the suffering but they themselves cannot chose not to be born however an individual might decide not to have children themselves based on their own subjective view of their life alone not on any informed knowledge of the life / lives of their potential offspring - which for obvious reasons is largely unknowable to the individual.
In this context this from the Bible is also relevant from Luke chapter 23 verses 26 to 31
      The Crucifixion of Jesus
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then
“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’[b]
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Here Jesus appears to be suggesting that suffering of man will increase in the future to such an extent that then women will regard the childless enviously as not having children means you never have to endure the agonies of watching your children suffer and be powerless to stop it. Many parents have endured this agony and are enduring this agony every day as a consequence of illness, war and poverty.
Therfore in conclusion whether or not you believe your life to be not worth the suffering or not and whether you decide it is better not to have children of your own or not the fact is we are here now whether we like it or not and therefore the best we can do is to try the make the most of our life, (during the relatively short time we are in existence here on earth) appreciate what we can and to treat both ourselves and others with the utmost compassion as whether you believe life to be ultimately pointless or not we are ALL, (by definition) both here living our individual lives right now and many of us are suffering. So let's try and alleviate suffering on all fronts and then maybe this will provide us with a reason to endure until such time as we inevitably die.
Maybe future generations will find ultimate freedom and happiness, (like the turtles in the video who escape the pit). Or maybe the freedom and illusion they crave is just an allusion and in fact the turtles outside the pit are still suffering but just in different unforseen ways. Who can know? One thing is for sure - in probably less than 30 years I will be dead, (I'm 55 years old now and my Dad died when he was 84) so all I am concerned with is today - be kind, do your best to live your life - what more can anyone do. Ahhh turtles schmurtles what do I care!? (PS I'm not Jewish and I don't have any kids)

This story may seem odd, but maybe someone could benefit from what I have to say. Over the years I've come to escape stressful periods of my life by daydreaming. I've come up with characters, worlds, and scenes to play in my mind on repeat. It felt amazing to have such control and certainty over something, and it may sound silly, but my characters were almost like a second family who lived solely for me.
I daydreamed for years until I realized I had enough of an idea to plot out a book. So that's what I did. Nothing particularly groundbreaking or original, just stories I found entertaining. During times where I've felt worthless and/or hopelsss I've reminded myself
"You can't die, no one else could ever write your stories like you."
My characters wouldn't want me to die, and I wouldn't want to kill them with me. I want to see the day where readers come to love them just as much as I have. It may not help everyone, but finding just one reason to stay alive has gotten me through the darkest parts of my life.

If a monster came for you then stick a gun in it's mouth and blow it up. If a monster with 10 brains came for you then you stick 10 guns in it's mouth and blow it up. lol
Sometimes I daydream I am a pretty girl even though I'm male. And I would spend all time with those who accepted me, those who need love.
I know all these are childish and stupid as heck, but they are all simple, straightforward wishes and pleasure that few can enjoy.

Even if they claim to have had children or plan to have children to give them the best lives that they can, that’s still selfish since by creating them you’re exposing them, vulnerable people, to so, so much suffering since this world is such a dangerous place… there’s pain, sadness, anger, guilt, frustration, fear, anxiety, phobias, trauma, thermal discomfort, urinary/ bowel distention (when those organs become full, and it is very unpleasant), depression, disease, disability, sickness, chances to be abused, chances to be assaulted, chances to be tortured, chances to be suicidal and upon attempting suicide landing themselves into a much much worse situation, etc etc etc… and at the end of it, death…

This is exactly why I'll never have my own children. At most maybe I would adopt someone that's already here. I don't feel it's fair or that I have the right to play God and force someone into existence without their permission. I know how much pain, hardship, and struggle I've had to endure due to the family I was born into and my genetics being highly susceptible to mental health issues. Knowing all this I could never pontentinally put someone through the pain I've had to endure. It would be imoral and selfish. I've wish so many times that I would have never been born and honestly... if I had a gun or another good suicide method easily accessible, I probably would have been dead by now. I've never really felt the inate desire some people seem to have to reproduce. I don't really see the point other than it's a way to pass the time and something to focus your life around. Natural selection doesn't really do it's thing with us humans very well anymore with how easy survival has become in most places so I guess I just gotta take responsibility myself to take over and not curse or burden someone with mental health issues. But hey maybe in the future we'll actually have full proof treatments instead of the stone age shit we mostly use now to treat people. Pump um full of shitty drugs and numb their pain so they can be a zombie but hey at least they wont want to hurt themselves anymore! If you ask me you're better off dead at that point

Never really thought of it like that. I think for many being a child is a fairly positive experience since you dont have as much conditioning muddying your experience of life and you don't really have any worries. I remember it being magical compared to the depressive anxious haze I've been stuck in now. Granted some kids definitely have it awful from the start and I feel terrible for them. Its really unfortunate you can't choose your the circumstances you're born into that shape and make you into who you are. Then regardless of those circumstances you're expected to fit the mold society and nature requires of you regardless of if you were given the proper tools to do so.

There are way too many problems that are not even worth mentioning that need fixing, and all of them are a consequence of humanity existing. So, telling us that “we need fixing” is inconsiderate to the amount of problems that are in this world and to the fact that all they’re doing is dragging other vulnerable beings into this DANGEROUS world full of problems…
The only thing that meeds fixing is the issue of humanity existing, and the only way to do so is extinction, obviously.
But normies believe human extinction would be a “tragedy” but they’re missing a very important and basic point when it comes to determining whether or not something is a tragedy.
For something to be tragic, there has to be someone to mourn it but in the case of human extinction, anyone who could potentially mourn it won’t exist. The world is better off without humans anyways.
And honestly it’s incredibly offensive when I’m told that I need fixing, or therapy, because I’m the one who took some time to really think about the world a bit, while all they’re doing is believing and devoting themselves to anything positive that they hear like sheep, even if it’s all lies.
And this is way offtopic here but I think therapy is only a result of the greedy nature of the government, or whoever benefits from their walking wallet/ tax payers/ working machines. The benefactors from this shitshow just want to drain as much money as they can out of people… So in order to do that… create a system that tells people that they’re mentally sick and not normal if their beliefs even slightly deviate from what is considered as normal, and prescribe them heavy medication to blunt their emotions so they are fine with the prospect of working for possibly a lifetime.
And to pressure people into going to therapy… first brainwash others into believing their lives are great (when they’re not… the reasons are obvious), and then order them to spread their peaceful and naive platitudes about how wonderful life is and if you don’t think so then you’re unfit to decide for yourself and mentally ill… crazy. And since everyone thinks life is so great (or just ignores the problems), they throw even more vulnerable souls into this hellhole.

It's not just you - this is called 'isolation'. It's one of the many defense mechanisms humans use to stave off existential dread identified by Peter Wessel Zapffe, the Norwegian pessimist philospher. He defines it as "a fully arbitrary dismissal from consciousness of all disturbing and destructive thought and feeling". He cites "One should not think, it is just confusing" as a common example of this behaviour. It also manifests in the silent agreement most of society seems to have to never mention or talk about the most dire facts of our existence while going about their business, as you mentioned. In his essay 'The Last Messiah' he explores how humans deal with existential dread or 'cosmic panic' as he puts it. He believed the development of consciousness entails a tragedy - humans have spiritual and existential needs that reality cannot satisfy, and so most people learn to save themselves from this fact by 'artificially limiting the contents of their consciousness'. He thought that the sooner humanity recognises our situation for what it is, the better, and we can forever end suffering with his proposed solution - 'Know yourselves, be infertile, and let the earth be silent after you.'

Everything we do in life is to momentarily reduce suffering. We eat so we aren't hungry, we form relationships so we don't feel alone, we work so we aren't homeless, we watch movies/tv to avoid boredom, etc.
But all this is in vain because we are simply delaying the inevitable given that the suffering we try so desperately to avoid always comes back and rears its ugly head.
At this point it's hard to even enjoy what limited pleasure I experience because of how fleeting and pointless it is.

Im glad this video happened upon me as ive never seen so many people who share the same rough take on life as i do, and the video itself is a great representation of our social system and "accepted lifecycle", and its extremely flawed nature. It also sheds light on how i and many others within these comments seemingly see it and feel, i myself have had troubles in the past of life feeling pointless, a cycle of pain for a reward i have to spend near 16 years of my life to decide on and the rest of it to work towards said reward, all with the high chance i wont ever be given what i choose, but that is in the past and i can only hope anyone going through the same finds their take on life, and at least leaves happy. Optimistic nihilism is what ive adopted as my ideology, its simple yet seemingly flawless: just do what makes you happy, for nothing truly matters in the end. When i shared these thoughts to my friends they seemed more shocked than anything and so until now, i thought i was relatively alone with my take. Its nice, to see so many people that have "awakened" as i have. Whoever may find this in the sea of shared theories and ideologies, i can only give you my highest hopes you find what it is that calms you and allows you to take up your existence willingly and live it happily until you see fit. That is, if you havent already lol.

I think that right now you might feel like your happiness underwhelms your suffering and you would thus rather not be born.
But I am sure that there is something that you want. Something that you feel would be nice to have like your dream job whatever it might be. I am sure that you have something like that. What if in the future you get what you wanted and it makes you feel, "it was a worth it" and it outweighs all your sufferings. If you were told in the present that this would happen in the future then would you still choose to never be born?

This is an altered version of the question. If, before being born, your were shown everything that would happen in your life, your birth, death and everything in middle but from a third person's perspective.
You wouldn't understand how you will feel as those thing actually happen nut you will know they will happen. Kinda like if Dumbledore told Harry that he was going to kill Voldemort in 7 years and everything that leads up to it but Harry wouldn't have felt any of it. He would know that Cedric Diggory was going to die but since he didn't get to know him personally, he wouldn't feel anything for it until he actually lives through it.
