Canon have really ticked the box here and with a number of other affordable RF lenses coming, this will give amateur photographers who are never going to spend the big bucks on L series lenses a fantastic high quality option for the new more affordable bodies which are bound to be introduced over the next 12 months. Exciting times for canon shooters.

Hi Justin, I have not shot with the 35mm F1.8 yet, but I’m considering adding this as a travel lens in my bag when I want to have a lighter set up which is quite often!. I am a canon shooter who has invested significant in the RF line up for my work and play! I like the fact that Canon are starting to make very high quality lighter lenses now more available for more people to enjoy their amazing glass and new bodies as they come out. I am however a professional and have the RF85mm f1.2, RF 28-70mm f2, RF 16-35mm f2.8 and RF 70-200mm f2.8 on EOS R5 and R bodies. I am looking forward to getting the 35mm f1.2 when it gets released as this fits with my work, but small and light has an important place relative to theses lenses as its like carrying bricks in your camera bag when f1.2 is really not needed when you are out and about. So its more about the right lens for the job isn’t it, and if the quality is there and you are not needing to shoot as extremely shallow DOF the difference is only noticeable if you’re a pixel peeper....and we all find it difficult to love those guys!!!! 😁

I actually love having aperture on the lens, and was one reason I gravitated towards Fuji when I got back into photography. I could care less about macro and I don't shoot much video, but I love small, fast, and versatile. The current lens on my R6 is then 24-105 f/4 and this is on my radar. Holding off until I see what Sigma brings to the RF mount.

    • @dps6198

Sigma and Tamron dont have any plans to offer lenses compatible with RF mount.
Either you buy this lens or you buy the EF-RF adapter for $100 and the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM for $600, $700 plus shipping and tax...so closer to $800?
Unless your a professional photographer a real pro. A person who pays all of their bills from photography clients it won't make much difference.

Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? The price is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work and photo shoots?

hi Justin, thank you for presenting an alternative, I will look into that. I don't like big cameras, and I don't like big lenses no matter how good quality they are. think about leica lenses. that means small lenses are possible. I was thinking about canon r5 but then I changed my mind. I don't know videographers but that will definitely satisfy photographers. thank you.

Maybe I didn’t understand your point about IS in a photography lens: I shoot a lot of fast moving things like birds and wildlife and I totally appreciate having IS! And i never try to slow my shutter speed because of IS, so where did you get that? I do slow my shutter speed to drive ISO down to beat noise in my images and IS can help, but you have to take, generally, a lot of shots to freeze action for moving subjects, so IS does help in this regard. So which part of this do you not buy?

While the title is a little bit "clickbaity" (which I do to a little bit on my videos) I liked your conclusions because these were the thoughts I had while I decided to buy the RP with just that lens:
Photo: High aperture + IS: avoid a tripod in many situations
large aperture for thin DOF (also for video)
compact, versatile lens (see above) + an image field close up of ~50x75mm
    light, compact
Video: RP has no IS so lens has to do it
good focal length (found out that after using the lens)
    organic focusing with STM motor
While I could buy those RF L lenses they lack in terms of versatility if you want to use only one lens - and for special tasks there are some trusty EF lenses in my drawer :)
It was just the best overall package for me one year ago and still is!

@@JustinMyersPhoto I have a jewelry business and use the Rf 35mm for closeup shots and the macro capabilities on this lens is fantastic. In regards to the R6 overheating issue I don't think it's been overblown not for the price of this camera. Again I don't shoot in 4k but would have bought the R6 to future proof but you can't use those high end specs without worrying about the time limits. DPReview’s tests found that any usage of the camera before you intend to start shooting, including time spent warming up a shot, setting the white balance, setting focus, shooting stills, or just waiting on a subject to get ready all cut into your total recording time. The longer you spend carrying out these activities, the less time you’ll have to shoot. I have the Sony a7s3 as well as the lumix GH5 and can shoot 4k all day with no issues. As a Canon fan I was expecting way better performance for the high end specs I'm paying for. Just my two cents.

With the overheat protection mode, you can shoot stills without subtracting from overheating limits and it even regenerates time from overheating in between clips in video mode without even turning the camera off. It’s much different now than at the time.
I actually did a pretty thorough review of the R6 with a test of the overheating with current firmware as well as a comparison with the R if you’re interested, but again I still think the R is a great camera

I had the a7S III to test for a while, the video footage is great, no doubt. But it’s not for me. But it’s all about finding what works best for you. I shoot a lot of 24 and 60fps and since the R6 downsamples from 5.1K, that looks better than on the a7S III. I actually haven’t had a chances to test the 14-35mm yet, so I haven’t done any comparison. Seeing as that is an L series lens though and this 35mm is not, I would not expect this prime lens to be noticeably sharper.

hi with my r6 and 35mm, the focus in photo mode is so fast but in video it becomes too slow, (sound of focus motor doesnt matter to me i just want it to be fast),
(moving servo af speed at + 2)
to switch focus bewtweeen 2 subjects it takes so much time in video mode whereas in photo mode it does that instantly why so?

    • @JustinMyersPhoto
      @JustinMyersPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

Two things I would suggest you look at:
      1. “Movie Servo AF Track sens.” in the AF menu. Set it closer to responsive and see what works best for you. I think your issue is less of AF speed and more of responsiveness in switching between subjects.
      2. Make sure you aren’t underexposed. Use histograms and exposure tools. Especially if you’re in C-Log3, if your histogram is crushed to the left, the camera will struggle to focus properly. Exposing properly can make a huge difference in AF performance

IS is important in so many situations for photography. It really helps expecially if it's just a bit too dark, shooting indoors or want to keep iso down. It's certainly very very useful for videographers, but it's also important for photographers.

    • @JustinMyersPhoto
      @JustinMyersPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Ya, that’s actually my point. If we go by the double focal length rule, a typical photographer with a 35mm lens would be able to get reasonably sharp images without IS at a shutter speed of 1/80. So, in order for IS to help shoot in lowlight by lowering shutter speed with a 35mm lens, one would need to use a shutter speed of less than 1/80. Unless the subject is completely stationary, meaning no humans, no animals, nothing being blown by wind or even air conditioning, shutter speeds that slow would have motion blur from the subject itself moving. So, while you could technically shoot a slower shutter speed with the IS, it is not helpful to most photographers for the purpose of lowlight because shutter speeds that slow can’t capture sharp images of anything that is even capable of moving.
Now, that’s not say it’s not useful. Especially with the macro capabilities of this lens, the IS is very helpful, but that’s not for the purposes of lowlight. Movement from shooting handheld shows up, even at higher shutter speeds, when shooting at macro distances, and the IS helps counter that.

Thank you for doing this. The current talk of the town is Canon has abandoned the community because they are not supporting the third parties, but no one seems to be talking about the fact that Canon has developed both the highest RF, which is expensive, but they developed this lower-end STM glass for those who can't afford the regular RF. Videos like yours should be the norm.
The RF STM line goes overlooked because a ton of TH-camrs have people believing the lie, because it's not fashionable, to tell the truth, which is Canon hasn't abandoned anyone, and this STM line, especially when it's on sale is cheaper than what Sigma and Tamron offer to Sony, Nikon-Tamron, and Fuji in some cases.
So, Canon wants to recoup their R&D, well they have earned that right and this is coming from a Sony Shooter, who owned Nikon and Fuji and shot Canon for film. I do think Canon might change its mind in the future, sure, but overall, the camera market isn't in a great place during this recession and I don't fault them for this decision, once you understand the whole story.

I’ll be honest, I do have mixed feelings on the issue as well. On one hand, the reason I got into the RF system was because I loved the lenses. On the other hand, having some choice between lenses is rarely a bad thing for the consumer, and I’m not a fan of how Canon has shut out third party lens manufacturers and has specifically gone after smaller 3rd party lens and even accessory manufacturers and forced them to stop sell RF mount products. I have had one instance (after having made this video) where, also shooting a group outdoors, when focusing close to infinity, the autofocus actually back-focused into the background across the whole series of shots with that group (the camera was on a tripod). As soon as I moved to the next shot, the back-focusing stopped and I’ve never ran into the problem again. My best advice: make sure the lens firmware is up to date, and I would be cautious to double check that you got correct focus when focusing near infinity.

I would also suggest you have a bit more respect for others coming to your channel and engaging in your community, as you are not Peter McKinnon, Jared Polin, or Tony Northup.
