    I love this concept for a DIY corner cabinet solution. I know that slides that work like that are hard to find/expensive if there is anything even off the shelf. But it would be so cool to see a working solution of this. Great idea.

    I was so hopeful you'd get it worked out, I have four blind corner cabinets in my small galley kitchen (can't imagine what that builder was thinking!) that are practically useless. :(

    Hi Sandra,
    I see what you're trying to do to access that blind spot. If I was building my cabinets from the ground up as you I would drop all those drawer glides and piano hinges. Instead, delete all together the typical bottom shelf at the toe kick and just make two carts on castors that roll on the floor (inside the base cabinet). The cart at the door could be rolled completely out giving you access to roll the "blind cart" to the door or completely out of the cabinet. Furthermore, why not build all base cabinets open to a rolling cart hidden by the base cabinet doors.
    Bob The Builder.

      sometimes the best thing to do is just go around the side of the wall or bar and access that space from the other side... or install a wine fridge or something.

      mark d My strategy is to put cabinets on either side and forget about it. When you look at all of the wasted space in a house overall, this small bit doesn't warrant the time, effort and expense it takes to use it effectively.

      +John Heisz It's a funny conundrum. I knew it would be a time suck but as a "creator" I knew it would be REALLY cool if I could make it work. And It worked ok but not to my standards for part of my cabinetry in my home. Ya know what I mean...

      +Frank Graffagnino I have a wine fridge on the other side of the pantry and I don't want to access it from my bedroom. Ha. I really don't need the storage I am just really stubborn about giving up on something I've started.

    This gives me an idea to put a garbage compactor in the blind corner. You could throw your trash in, then a hydraulic garbage truck style compactor could press your trash into the blind space. Every month the super compact block of garbage (or perhaps recycling) could be removed.
    Blind corners are seriously hilarious. The best solution is to open the wall into the next room and put drawers in there. I was lucky that my blind corner was in a peninsula so I could just put my wine fridge in the space, facing the other side of the peninsula of course. My parents solved the blind corner problem by ignoring the space - putting NOTHING in it - because they had a big old farmhouse on 100 acres of land - as Canadians in the 2nd largest country in the world it makes me wonder why we just don't build slightly bigger houses and forget about the blind corners. Leave them for the spiders. But that's a cop-out. I admire your attempt.

    Mount the pull out cabinet slides onto the side of the drawer cabinet ( that's normally hidden inside ) so the first cabinet can be pulled out completely like before except its mounted onto the drawer cabinet, this will allow you to fully extend the first cabinet out then move the whole thing to the right to give you access to the drawers, you will have to stabilize the drawers because of the weight of the pull out cabinet attached to it, some blind corner optimisers do this except they use wire baskets instead of drawers which I prefer because pull out swing is not robust

    As a 15 year cabinet maker/installer, this is super well done! I was thinking a pocket door hardware might work? It’s a set of door hinges attached to a set of drawer slides. So when you swing the door open, you can push it back into the cabinet. This might work in reverse for a drawer box like yours.

    Sandra don’t give up. I’m a professional truck tech and have been for around 45 years. I’m occasionally faced with those kind of problems that doesn’t right away present a straight forward solution. There is a logical solution you just need to think on it; it’ll come to you in the middle of the night 😂. This is an excellent approach and I’m going to work on it because I have the same problem.

    I know how to handle the engineering.
    The trick with the 'first component' is to prevent the vertical 5" cleat from racking on it's slides. This is accomplished with a cable and two pulleys. You still need slides and you can use regular heavy duty ones like you've already tried with all the ball bearings. The cable will force the sliding 5" cleat to stay perfectly plumb without the weight of the cabinet making the top slide open farther than the bottom one. Once you figure this out you can probably even make that vertical cleat that slides horizontally only a couple inches wide.
    Here goes:
    You know those stranded wire curtain 'rods' they sell at IKEA? (You might be able to use one of those or you might have to just buy some 1/8" wire rope and cobble something together.)
    One end of the cable needs to be securely fastened at the rear of the right cabinet wall by the back end of the top slider. The cable then goes horizontally to the vertical sliding part where there is a pulley attached to the top end of it. The cable goes over the pulley then descends vertically along the cleat, then under another pulley mounted at the bottom end of the cleat. From there the cable continues horizontally toward the front again along the bottom slider to the lower right corner of the cabinet. With this Z arrangement, the steel cable would have to stretch to allow the cabinet to tilt, but the vertical cleat with the cable attached can still slide easily. You'll need some sort of turn buckle arrangement at the lower right corner of the cabinet that adjusts the length of the cable. Loosen the cable and the cabinet tilts toward the floor. Tighten it and the cabinet lifts up.

    I know this is an old video but couldn’t resist commenting as this is still a problem for many. The problem with the pull out section is it is able to swing whist you’re trying to pull it out, which makes it clunky and unstable - hinge being on the back right corner. Wondered if you tried but it would work. -stabilising whilst in transit out of the cupboard. Put roller guides along the base of the cupboard and then a 4mm (or so) wide alloy or polished steel strip fixed underneath the moving unit. The strip would fit into the roller guides when going in and out. This would keep the base unit fixed until free of the cupboard. To make it super sturdy use two strips, one either side of the base. Obviously you would need Y shaped guides for the strips so that they centre out and enter roller guides perfectly. The drawer unit would need to be modified so that it rolls over the top of the roller guides. Looking at your workshop should be too hard to do.

    You have a great design, and it just needs a tweek to make it work. You will have to make both your storage units 3" shorter. The plywood on the right side with a slide on the top and bottom is a great idea now convert that into a 2" tall drawer by adding 3 more 2" high pieces this will allow you to add a slide to the bottom on the left side. Add a 2" tall rail on the left attached to the bottom of the cabinet to mount the left slide to. You will have to make your other pullout drawer unit 3" shorter and raise them up to clear the 2" drawer slides on the bottom. Hope this makes sense. You had a great idea don't give up..

    Did mine a few years back and even though the hardware was a bit expensive it works well. My upper and lower slides are connected with a very wide (as wide as the vehicle backboard) metal piece. If you can't find one (the other commenter identified) make your own with thick sheet metal. Good luck.

      +Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} Mine was from accuride www.accuride.com/en-us/products/1234 (this model but your slide measurements may need a different size). Ordered mine through local Woodcraft store.I think this is the one I got and I used an oak wood piece as a connector. Also built one for a neighbor after they saw mine and used a thick piece of aluminum as the connector instead of the wood like on mine. Hope the link came through above. Would like to hear back on what you end up doing.

    • @MRrwmac
      @MRrwmac 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} Don't put any more space between the two slides than is necessary and that will reduce or eliminate the forward back tilting. Remember the weight is at the bottom anyway. My connector plates and the one for neighbor had only an inch or two between the closest points of the metal slide plates that the connectors screwed onto.

    So I'm gonna pick up where you left off with the blind corner. Instead of hinging the 1st pull out I'm gonna have the 1st one pull out to me; then, while pushing it out of the way it ends up pulling the other "2nd" pull out (that's nested in the blind corner). A double "box" where 1 pulls the other. The 2nd one is a box in a box, because the "outer" box has the floor drawer slides and the inner box has the side slides. Can you picture it?

    Hi Sandra, I'm good at figuring things out but not good at doing them. I'm also not good at explaining what I mean but I'm going to do my best here. There are 2 cabinets facing us and 1 hidden. The cabinet to the right we'll call no.1, the one you fought with is no.2, and the hidden one is no.3. Build no.1 to slide forward by using the top and right side as its guide (or however). Open up the wall between no.1 and 2, then build tracks on the bottom for no.2 to slide forward and to slide over behind no.1 just like the tracks you built for no.3 to slide over into no.2s space. Picture it.

    • @Sawdustgirl
      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SandiRose27 But then there would still be wasted space. Because you have to have room for any of the cabinets to slide. ??

    • @SandiRose2008
      @SandiRose2008 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} No, no, no. :) Maybe 2 or 3 inches. Configure no.1 to pull out as far as possible. Make the face of drawer no.2 a couple of inches shorter so that it fits in behind no.1 when it slides over. It looks to me like you could get those 2 inches back by making no.2 one inch taller and one inch wider. And you'll gain back the couple of inches lost because of the drawer pulls or hinges or whatever they're called. :) Maybe you lose a couple of inches on the bottom of no.2 and 3 because of the casters, but won't it be worth it!

    • @Sawdustgirl
      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL I can't visualize what you are describing at all. It's a mute point though because my cabinets are already in place under the countertop with additional cabinets built on top of the countertop. So I won't be demoing the cabinet. I can't just cut the walls out of cabinets. :-)

  • @craigscott7760
    @craigscott7760 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably too late, but what if you mounted a full sheet of plywood to the drawer slides on the right side vs a narrower piece. The problem seems to be that the smaller piece racks as you are trying to pull out the drawer. With the larger piece, it cannot move as much and might make for a smoother pull.

  • @right.howdoimakethat6519
    @right.howdoimakethat6519 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think I'd just piano hinge that first cabinet and curve its back left corner so it can make room for the second set of drawers. Still a little lost space, but better than that entire blind corner going to waste.

    • @Sawdustgirl
      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. How do I do that? So not have it slide out at all... hmmm...that's an idea. Problem is all my drawers are inset and I don't want that one to be different than the rest but I will give that idea some thought as I hadn't considered it at all. Great thought. Thanks for throwing it out there!

    • @Joe-hv4xr
      @Joe-hv4xr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} If you wanted to go this route - the shelves would mount right to the inset doors. This would allow the inset hinging mechanism (cup, knife or knuckle) to kick the door out with the shelves attached to it. If you went with cup hinges, you would probably want to double the quantity you normally use in order to support the load of the shelves. The shelves themselves would be a quarter circle with the radius of the width of the door.

  • @Joe-hv4xr
    @Joe-hv4xr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a tough design to crack.
    The issue that you are having with the pullout is the top and bottom guides are binding because the top tries to come out faster than the bottom (pull force, friction on the bearings, phase of the moon...).
    If you have a loot at something like a pocket door hardware set (the type for the big armoire entertainment centers - not between rooms) you will see that they normally have a balance cable or rod that links the top slide with the bottom slide in order to force both to move at the same time.
    The smaller ones for regular doors are normally just a couple of slides, but a heavy duty system like the KV 8092 or Accuride 1432 should be able to do it without racking.

    • @Sawdustgirl
      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe and Liz I actually tried a cabinet pocket door hardware set with the metal rod between the two glides but needed to remove and weld the hinges back on backwards to see if it would work in my situation - and I don't have welding skills so decided to keep the $80 glide set for an actual pocket door. haha
      I ended up with heavy duty slides (150lb). I tried mounting the slides closer together. I tried flipper door hardware. I started out with a pocket door track and rollers (wall type) which is what I had in at the beginning and after all my experimenting that original set up wracked the least. sigh... oh well. LOL

    • @HeavyboxesDIYMaster
      @HeavyboxesDIYMaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} I thought a pocket door hardware would work too but that makes sense, the hinges would be on backwards.

    • @Joe-hv4xr
      @Joe-hv4xr 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sandra Powell aka {Sawdust Girl} Unfortunately was watching the video from the other side of the room while making coffee this morning.Looks as though you used the KV style with the connecting rod on one of your tests. Also seem to have wanted to use the Euro style cup hinges. If I had to guess, you probably had more issues with the hinges as opposed to the slide mechanism - but without being there and all that... Those hinges would not work too well for this. They are really weak to start with, and you would be asking a whole lot more out of them than what they could do. For the hinge - it will be hard to beat the piano hinge for this application.The slide mechanism you started with is pretty good idea. They have a lot of slop though. Not a big issue when the only thing they are working against is gravity and you have a 30" door to spread the slop over.If you wanted to have another go with the KV8092 (not sure if it is still in one piece - saw some slides getting cut), I could maybe toss together a quick drawing of how I do them.Something that might be more comfortable for you though would be Accuride 115RC linear motion guides. They were really designed for exactly this sort of movement, a lot like your original concept but with a lot tighter fit and finish.

    • @Sawdustgirl
      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe and Liz Those look cool. I think I'd still get wracking issues because the 5" cleat would still be the only thing attached to the glides and the weight of the cabinet attached with the piano hinge would push the bottom back. BUT I think I have found a really good solution...stay tuned!

    • @Joe-hv4xr
      @Joe-hv4xr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally I will use the linear slides at both top and bottom. Generally I use them for things like hidden wall openings with just a single cassette on top and one on the bottom.
      Most the racking will come from slop as opposed to actual torsion, up to the point of failure of course. The linear guides fit more tightly than your average slides which prevent them from shifting.
      There are a lot of different ways to handle the problem though. Even just taking a single heavy duty slide and cutting the slide down to the same length as your cleat while using the full length track as the guide. This will prevent racking as you don't have the second track setup which will get out of alignment to cause it to bind.

    How about foregoing the drawers, make it just a sliding shelf (one above the other maybe), and the part that hinges out of the way, instead just make it a pull out shelf. It's a little reaching, but workable, and no where near the reaching caused by having nothing. or this www.rockler.com/blind-corner-half-moon-wood-2-shelf-lazy-susans-rev-a-shelf-4wls-series or this, which is 'almost' like what you built. www.rockler.com/blind-corner-wire-pullouts-rev-a-shelf-5psp-series

    We're in the same situation but not nearly as handy as you are. But is it feasible to ditch the piano hinge and have the first section on 2 sets of gliders? The first set would be to pull it forward, the second to pull it to the side. The problem is you'd have to reinforce the heck out of it and only keep lightweight items in the first unit. The second unit would only need to slide to the side but you could have it slide forward as well. I hope this inspires you!

      If you don't move the first section out of the way, you wouldn't be able to reach in to access the second section. That's why I used a piano hinge. There is (very expensive) hardware out there that will slide out and over. I didn't want to spend $300 on hardward.

    Maybe two additional slides would help deal with these forces. One on the top and one on the bottom as if the drawer were actually rotated 90 deg counterclockwise.

      +Matthew Obley Top and bottom wouldn't attach to that 3/4" cleat which is what has to hold the load because the cabinet has to hinge over out of the way.

    how about a glide on the top and one on the bottom for stability, on the first chunk you pull out, or maybe stiffer hinges, ?

    Hi, great idea!!! I know you've moved away from it, but I think with a little modification you could make it work. You should look at the blind corner unit from Knape & Vogt, and modify yours to something similar. I would use two full extension slides on the side of your rolling drawer unit to mount your swing out box to. You would have to modify the swing out unit slightly to work with the new configuration as it would no longer swing out, but pull out and then move to the side when you roll the drawer unit over. The slides should handle the weight of the unit so it slides in and out better. I think it would be a shame to give up on such a good thing after so much effort...

    You have moved on from this almost 2 years ago and probably don't want to touch this again but that wasted space in the corner of your cabinet is now bothering me (thanks btw). I had a similar situation - short depth spice rack cabinet on slides. It was built with solid maple and it was heavy. The slides could be aligned within a mm or two and they would function but they were not smooth. To function smoothly without any binding the alignment of the slides needs to be exact for a short throw slide. Tighten one set of slides (top) so there is no movement but leave the bottom slides a tad looser so the screws will allow natural alignment. Block up the bottom of the cabinet so the weight of the cabinet does not throw the alignment off when fully extended, then tighten the crap out of the bottom slide screws. And drill more anchor points if needed.
    You might also want to try 3 slides mounted to the sides of the cabinet vs. the two slides you had mounted to the top and bottom of the cabinet. (the slides aren't designed to function properly in the up and down (facing each other) vertical alignment.
    There is a way of doing what you want to do - keep at it.

    Would something like the BLUM Tandem stabilizer work? Might stop the racking motion.

    I Realise I'm late to this party, how about setting the pull out on bottom running drawer slides with an extra supporting one at the top. Then the concealed box raised higher so that it will slide across over the top of the bottom slides? Just looked at the publish date, you've probably moved house by now!

    A wise person once told me, "sometimes it helps to walk away from a problem and clear your head and then go back when you're refreshed". I've taken that advice in lots of areas. Maybe that's all you need to do, cuz it looks to me like you're on to something there. I see this was from 5yrs ago, did you ever get it worked out?

    Hello,
    I think the problem is that your first component is in free rotation which make it unstable, so what you need is to make it slide too and not only the 5" part and to do so, you have to block the rotation when sliding it in. What I suggest for you to do:
    * First, you could use some kind of magnetised system or the invisible hinges you used at the beginning of this video, in order to block the rotation before rolling the component inside the cabinet .
    * Besides, the 5" part is not suffcient to support all the weight, so for the sliding system, you could use a rail inside the cabinet and bearings in the component 1 and the 5" part like this one (www.pbclinear.com/Images/Items/prod_crt_Hevi-Rail_Profile_Rail.jpg), but be carefull the measerment should be as precise as possible.
    Finally, I hope that will do the work for your nice system and good luck ;)

    I'd recommend befriending a good metal fabricator. They might be able to whip up something that would work great and be more sturdy compared to wood.

    Drawer slides are usually on either side of a drawer, so there designed to take vertical forces only. Your slides are on one side of the drawer, so they need to deal with the torque created by the drawer. The bottom drawer slide is in compression and the top drawer slide is in in tension.

      @Sawdustgirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Obley I've used drawer glides on one side only many many times. They work great! Just in this instance, they are holding the weight on a 5" wide strip of wood that is itself holding a cabinet on a piano hinge. It's a difficult job to ask of a pair of hinges.

    hey there, just found your channel great stuff, dont know if you already worked out this dreadfull issue, but im currently in similar position and hate to waste space as well, im currently trying something similar with your first configuration but instead of sliders ill be using ball bearings, hardwood and book hinges, if you are interest ill let you know how it turned out and send you some images. Again, great stuff

    Have you thought of putting the components on wheels and hinged onto the cabinet? So it looks like the rest of boxes. Put the door on to fit like the others. Please dont walk away we are watching.

    I know how you could have done this with relative ease .. I literally just watched the lady on this video /watch?v=_IoBHKV7o-A put the inside draw on a board so that it rolls out and leaves a gap beneath it. That gap would allow you to put a roller on the bottom on the front draw. just line it up accurately and adjust the hardware to slide in smoothly
