  • Raisina Dialogue 2023 | New Frontiers: Linking India, Europe, and the World
Trading patterns are being reworked between countries and groupings on the basis of both trust and economic opportunities. India has already signed new-age agreements with Australia and the United Arab Emirates; has existing agreements with Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN; and is engaged in wide-ranging discussions with, among others, Canada and the European Union.
What are the parameters of new-age trade agreements, and can they deepen existing strategic partnerships? Can they incorporate national and regional aspirations on sustainability, services trade, and digitalisation? How can geopolitical trust and geo-economic strategy create momentum for new-age trade agreements? Can trade and technology councils assist in modernising economies and deepening their shared autonomy?
    In Conversation:
Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, India
Scott Moe, Premier, Government of Saskatchewan, Canada
Andreas Scheuer, President, Asia Bridge; Member of Bundestag, Germany
Heungchong Kim, President, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, Republic of Korea
Anna Stellinger, Deputy Director General, Confederation of Swedish Enterprise, Head of International and EU Affairs, Sweden
    Moderator:
Alicia García Herrero, Chief Economist Asia Pacific, Natixis, France
    About Raisina Dialogue:
The Raisina Dialogue is India’s premier conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics committed to addressing the most challenging issues facing the global community. Every year, leaders in politics, business, media, and civil society converge in New Delhi to discuss the state of the world and explore opportunities for cooperation on a wide range of contemporary matters. The Dialogue is structured as a multi-stakeholder, cross-sectoral discussion, involving heads of state, cabinet ministers, and local government officials, who are joined by thought leaders from the private sector, media, and academia.
The conference is hosted by the Observer Research Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. This effort is supported by a number of institutions, organisations and individuals, who are committed to the mission of the conference.

Yes that is correct especially in terms of agricultural products and this is because there is a societal difference and they want to protect their own products but expect others to not do so. There still exists NAZI party ideology in Europe like in the Czech Republic. Understandably small country but dangerous as well. The Indian government really needs to see which societies or the citizens will to work with Indian companies and people. Otherwise it simply will be a waste of time and India needs to keep an eye on the 10 Trillion dollar GDP nominal economy. But well said

Self sustainability is always important in dynamic uncertain times like this.. However, FTA can be made to some percentage but with very carefully drafted specially learning from history and right rules for dealing with any abuse if it starts. Again pushing our currency is important to strengthen it. Dynamism special connect to nature and working along with nature is something which is not understood by others need to be addressed this might go in basic value systems. The end product should be more encouraged rather than raw materials. Patents are another thing that need to be discussed. Again building a weak bridge is always good or it just costly.

It was interesting to see the Europeans getting annoyed because they couldn't continue to buy cheap and sell their expensive products in China as much as they did before and make huge profits regardless of labour laws and other rules they conveniently ignored. And now they say it is all India's fault for being too slow in laying the red carpet for the European companies. And in their playbook, self-reliance does not make good business sense. India will eat more than just potatoes even with 2 % trade with Europe

Some Europeans still live by the Nazi ideology as is the case with countries like the Czech Republic where some people look up to the Germans and especially the Nazi's and this is a reflection of that even today in 2023. India has to focus on dealing with people and societies that get along with India and most importantly Indians in order to get the most from the trade deals

All of the EU is unfortunately not the same as Sweden. There are societies and countries in EU that would have a race and societal problem with India. This is the reason why FTA may not work with all of the EU. For example even in the EU there are countries where the societies do not get along and even with a common currency, common capital in Brussels it does it work. South Korea as was said is unfortunately very nazi like nationalist in terms of steel trade and do not buy any Stella from Indian firms. The Indian government needs to also understand the society which is ready and acceptable to the Indians and those that can accept the Indian society as well. This will help in a better execution of the FTA. Therefore, Indian government and Indians need to do their homework before committing to something with someone. EU as a society is not uniform unfortunately there still exists NAZI in some of their hearts and minds

All Indians should listen very closely to what this lady says about the disparities between India & China- especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP & Congress Party. India needs to use China as the touchstone to its progress- it is far behind China in practically every measure except Individual Freedom & Democracy- the most important measure.
India got its Independence in 1947 & Mao’s China PRC came into power 2 years later - 1949 with about equal GDP’s - Today India’s is approx US $3Trillion (hoping to go to 6 trillion in next 5 years) China GDP is $ 17 trillion & the U.S. $ 26 trillion-
India is way behind China even though the people have the brains, ability of hard work & many other characteristics of the Indian people. Admittedly, ruthless dictatorship can achieve more than a persuasive Democracy.
But Modi & Indians need to use China as a yardstick to judge Indias progress in the last 75 years. Narendra Modi is a good Manager & has a good team ( especially EAM Jaishanker- an exception guy). So the Indian Govt & Modi should judge itself by this yardstick instead of all the undeserved publicity given by the Govt TV & News Media & Private TV stations to Modi & team

    1. We have the largest Consumer market and growing aspiring middle-class population.
    2. We have required raw materials.
    3. We have large no of employable young population.
Just we don't have the scale and skill to take on china as a manufacturing hub. We need to focus on that. Recently with govt efforts we are moving in the right direction. But we need to speed it up further. Every successful nation has indigenous manufacturing in its root of success.

India should not do any trade agreement with any and trend its own path and lets have organic growth which is already apparent. Arrogance from the European is self-evident, they have several restriction for Indian companies which they know but want India to accept their restrictions but lift Indian restrictions for the EU. In what fancy world are they living in? On Human right issue in China question, the guest dodged it and implied that, they don't care about human right if they will have access to the market in an oppressive regime. It is all about money then, human right are backbenchers then why lecture other countries about human rights if yourself has no ground on it and will happily trade for money? Self reliance is most important and Indian companies can cater to the huge domestic market. The foreign trade agreement is pushing because they can see the Indian companies are growing on their own and would like to restrict domestic Indian companies as soon as possible. @@Raptor-22 Tata and Mahindra cars, in 95% of their cars are not using European engines, they are inhouse development. It is your opinion, and your ignorance because third world always meant non-aligned countries. Many Europeans countries have higher debt than India and they are so-called developed because of the money their industries got after centuries of loot in Asia and Africa. France still collect colonial taxes from former colonies. Also, from time to time, they invade other countries along with their master, the US and loot other countries. EU has no moral ground to lecture India or any other country. We don't want to be rich by staining our hands in blood of innocent and oppression. Our culture have been non-materialistic and organic growth is the best. Moreover, FTA means looting developing countries resources and exploiting their citizen and polluting their environment. Europe is green and clean because most of the poisonous and polluting industries have been moved to developing countries. So, no thanks for FTA.

    • @aravindsanjeev4150
      @aravindsanjeev4150 ปีที่แล้ว

The source is Trust me bro? Indian cars are not in EU because EU cars are much better than Indian ones. Just look at the safety ratings and engine durability of Volkswagen car and compare it to Indian ones.
Many Indian companies are using European engines. By shielding off Indian companies from foreign brands, Indian companies will never innovate and remain second-rate companies. Which they are currently.
This actually has been proven in the financial sector where India opened the markets for US companies. This forced companies like HDFC and ICICI to innovate their banking system and are now the biggest banks in India by market capitalization. And their indirect impact of loaning and funding startups had dramatic benefits to Indian IT sector.
Talking about market access, India already enjoys bigger access to EU market than EU does to India. We have a trade surplus. The only reason Tata or Mahindra is not being bought in EU is because they are not worthy of buying for the Europeans. Not because they're restricted from selling.
