After more than 15 years of playing music, Dean Johnson's debut album "Nothing for Me, Please" is releasing the first week of May.
It took us planning the first-ever Western AF Showcase to finally get Dean to Wyoming. Getting this man from Seattle, which people had heard little about, was our top priority. Dean entranced the audience with his transcendental voice and impossibly clever lyrics. Now that we finally had him in Wyoming we took full advantage and captured this performance that we had been waiting on for years.
The song, "Faraway Skies" felt like our white whale. As much as we toiled in the planning of this vid, a lot of it came down to improv - embracing what the day will bring for light, the weather, and Dean’s performance itself.It was hard to commit to one concept for how to capture this video. Do we shoot it in Seattle? Does he come to Wyoming and surround himself with buffalo? The lyrics take you in and out of both urban and rural settings. It’s hard to pick what’s best. At the end of the day, it felt right to have Dean with just the sky behind him. It was all we really needed, the song would work its magic.
It is hard to let go after all the sweating we did to make this a video worthy of the song itself. After the sun went down we had the realization that it had been a beautiful day. We were surrounded by friends. In our hearts, whenever we hear "Faraway Skies," we’ll forever be transported to that day of making art with friends.
With that, we bow out, and announce to you all, Dean Johnson’s, "Faraway Skies" is one of the greatest songs to be released in 2023. Fight us.

I praise you sir, a savant of tieing words into a quilt the way you'd watch your grandmother furiously do in the late fall as a young man, amazed by the precision and pattern but so overcome by the Synchronicity of your elders fluidity in a theme. Every now and then, I stumble upon a song that's perfect in my opinion, and this is one of those songs.
This song will forever stick with me. I found it in the midst of an awful situation. When I hear it, everything lays out in front of me. The friends I've gained and lost. The abuse I lived through and escaped. Every good and bad. My scars, physical or not. It brings me a gut-twisting comfort.

I vividly remember the first time I ever heard this song. It was at a Sons of Rainer show at The Firefly in early summer 2018. The song came out toward the end of the set and it was the first time I had ever heard Dean sing lead vocals. It blew my mind.
