Mick Taylor is based on Ivan Milat. From what I’ve read and watched about him… this film is pretty close. One of my fave movies, John Jarret is crazy scary.
The realism and the time/effort taken to paint fuller pictures of the characters make the payoff/horror even more intense. Most Australian films and TV that find their way to my viewing seem well produced, better on average than Hollywood stuff. An interesting Australian series that focuses on a combat vet turned criminal-for-hire is "Mr. Inbetween," whose main character Ray provides a more complex portrait of someone who has killed for a fee.
I completely forgot this movie existed until this video popped up in my feed. I remember now I watched it as a kid along with Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw, stuff like that. I remember being so angry at this movie for not getting rid of Mick
I remember watching this movie with my Aunt, my Uncle, and my cousins when I was sleeping over and I swear this movie hella traumatized me as a kid 😨 I would tell my mom and sisters and anyone I know not to travel out of state on they’re own and literally I would pray everyday to get this movie image out of my head only because it was to scary for me. Now that I’m all grown I recently watch “Wolf Creek” again after 16 years and all I could say is that damn, it’s a good ass movie plus the sequel 👌
I also really recommend watching and doing one of these videos on the second instalment. To this day it remains is one of the only horror films I’ve watched that’s made me genuinely uncomfortable..
Nice video, and it is one of my favourite horror movies. I love the way they treated Mick and didn’t spend any time on giving him any unnecessary “reasons” for why he became what he is. It makes it so much more real and scary. I strongly recommend the film Snowtown. This is a well shot movie which tells the real story of the Snowtown murders. The film makers shot the scenes in the same kind of area in which the murders occurred and got nearly all the actors from the local population.
Exactly. The writing and especially the acting gave Mick a great 'personality', for lack of a better term. Perfect "Is this guy just awkward, or a psycho?" vibe without going over the top like Freddy Krueger became.
Wolf Creek is now one of my favorite movies of all time! The cinematography by the late Will Gibson is gorgeous to look at, the Australian outback essentially becomes a character In and of itself, and best of all, this particular horror movie takes most of the standard slasher cliches and throws them in the garbage! No cheap jumpscares, no final girl, no sex-or-drugs-gets-you-killed trope, no unlikable protagonists, and for once, the villain wins! The only survivor doesn't have a last-minute showdown. All he can do is escape.
As an Aussie myself Yeah I can agree with that statement but there's one underrated Aussie Horror Movie that's called Cargo I highly recommend it if you love zombie movies in my opinion it's a classic in my books
@@casscade_3379 Yes I agree with you 100% but "Wolf Creek" is a realistic suspense thriller slasher movie, and the "Cargo" is supernatural Zombie horror......
You want an interesting exercise, analyze this against the sequel. They don't turn it INTO American horror, they set up a sequel to the story already told, place it firmly in the same UNIVERSE-- then shine a thin, yet obvious Americanized filter over the entire thing-- right down to what is very CLEARLY a European/Australian style police cruiser painted in American colors-- it's a trippy thing they did, it kinda throws you off.
Did anyone notice the quick look of concern or worry on the bully's face immediately after the trio walked out the front door of the restaurant? I took it to mean that he may have sensed something very bad could happen to them. As a local, he may have had some knowledge of Mick and/or of people disappearing. The restaurant was far away from Mick's camp though, so who knows.
Both films and the series (at least the 2nd, never caught the 1st) were great. Definitely a lot of "wtf are you doing?!" moments in all of them. What makes Mick so scary as a villain is that at first, he comes off friendly and a little whacky, someone you can just run into anywhere. He's not a Michael Meyers or an Art the clown that gives you an immediate "got to gtfo of here vibe". By the time the vibe shows up, it's too late.
Apparently John Jarratt is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet! He played the heroic farmhand in 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', who finds the missing girl. He's superb.
@@sabinea3144 I can't remember who killed Peter Falconio he was shot roadside out in the middle of nowhere and killed. His girlfriend Joanna then ran into the scrub and luckily evaded the man that killed her partner and was picked up by a trucker many hours later. She was outright accused initially of making the whole thing up and killing Peter until Darwin police started piecing some things together that lead to the eventual arrest and conviction. Ivan Milat was one of Australias most infamous and prolific serial killers in Australia. His MO was picking up backpackers before making an excuse to pull over where he would go to the back of his vehicle and retrieve a revolver pistol and make shift restraints. From this point he would abduct his victims and drive them to remote bushland where he would execute any males immediately before torturing the female victims. He would routinely stab them in the spinal cord causing instant paralysis and then after hours of abuse would kill his victims by means of using a rifle on them as target practice or slitting their throats. He was convicted of 12 murders but some say it could be as high as 30. It is also rumoured that his brothers may have assisted in some or all of the murders but this has never been able to be proved due to a stiff wall of silence from the Milat family.

When mick takes them to his place the sign on the gate says navi talim, then at the end when the fella is found the couple in the red combi are direct tribute to the falconio mystery
Did you know, Mick is actually a wholly unique character with no basis in reality whatsoever? It’s a little known fact that there has never been any person remotely like Mick- Honestly though, the video explains where the idea for Mick comes from and yet every fifth post in this comment section is “Mick was actually based on serial killer Ivan Milat…”. 🤨
I mean, it's a fair comparison because Greg Mclean even said it's loosely based around the Ivan Milat case. He's also said that it's more of a loose interpretation, but definitely was inspired by learning about this case and wanted to build off the basis of preying on helpless people traveling through the outback. Plus, from what I've seen, it's been said that a lot of the personality of Mick was drawn from your basic Australian stereotypes, even referencing Crocodile Dundee within the movie itself. A lot of Mick's creation was an amalgamation of different influences, so it's not entirely fair to say he's a completely unique character.
I remember from my grandpa and his THICK Australian accent saying "heyyyy I know that dude..." (John jarrat/Mick) and as the guy bellow me said, he remembered him because he was a kids show host. 😅
Just realized I had watched this movie years ago when I was younger, but I only realized because I remember the one scene where she's hiding and he's looking for her above.
You should watch the Wolf Creek Series that I watched on Stan {Australian streaming service). It was even better than the movies. It seemed realistic with smart main characters. That will help you explore the Australian outback even more

My friend’s brother was murdered by Ivan Milat. This film is extremely hard to watch, but somehow being John Jarrett in the lead, l can watch it, as l know he’s a truly lovely man. Every country has someone like Mick hiding in the trees. That’s unfortunately true. Big Will is just the BEST.
If you liked the vibe of Wolf Creek, there's a great aussie indie horror called The Loved Ones that's worth a watch. It's not huge or anything, but I think you'd enjoy it!
This movie is based on Ivan Milat who is a very real person. He was a serial killer who murdered two men and five women who were all backpackers. When I gave birth to my daughter in 2019, Ivan Milat was at the same hospital (we were at RHW and he was in the Prince of Wales hospital which is technically two separate hospitals but are in the same big building). This movie was great because instead of having like 20 cannon fodder characters for killer to kill, this movie had only three main character + Mick to build up and it took it's time to build each character before Mick finally starts killing them, so you actually do want to see them survive because they seem like good people. Shame that not whole lot of movies do this, instead they just give us cannon fodder, most obnoxious characters that you can't wait to see die, however thing with characters like that is that you actually have to sit through first hour of the movie watching them be obnoxious.
so remember kids, always remember to double, triple tap your would be killers if you get a chance. Don't assume they're dead. Make sure they are anyways. Avoid being in a horror movie. This has been a psa
After going through the list of serial killers by the number of victims, I noticed a pattern: most target women, children, elderly women, homosexuals, teenage boys, and prostitutes. Usually killing with strangling. If this tells you anything, it's that serial killers are really weak and pathetic. They only target those they feel they can overpower, and likely result from some form of sexual insecurity - getting rejected or being ashamed of their sexuality. They probably only do it because they're weak, miserable creatures with no worth who want to feel "empowered" by attacking the weakest, most vulnerable members of society.

Scary show. Doesnt need any silly clown faces or skin suit crap. The guy who played "Mick" nailed it. Freaky character. Liked it. Seriously chilling movie.
No, it’s much safer than you think. We don’t have tornadoes every year, bears, coyotes, rattlesnakes, and there’s waaaaaay less guns. Just be aware when you’re advised to watch out for something. All good. You’d be very welcome here.
The "found footage" on the camcorder trope circa 9:48 kind of loses impact when you realise that there has to be a camera man holding the camcorder. (Mick definitely isn't)
It would have been a cool reveal to find out that one of the friends was an accomplice that leads people out there and films everything. But then I guess that's just Hostel. Maybe he has a very long selfie stick attached to his car Mad Max-style?
The film was loosely based on Australian serial killer Ivan milat & kidnapping of a British couple. He shot the guy and the woman was found alive. She faced a lot accusations that she was responsible which she wasn't.

I remember watching this movie with my Aunt, my Uncle, and my cousins when I was sleeping over and I swear this movie hella traumatized me as a kid 😨
I would tell my mom and sisters and anyone I know not to travel out of state on they’re own and literally I would pray everyday to get this movie image out of my head only because it was to scary for me.
That was actually a tough movie to sit through.
"Wolf Creek"(2005) is an excellent suspense thriller movie! This is probably the best Australian thriller movie of all time!
The TV series wasn't terrible either.
@@BengalCatChilli Wouldn't know about that.
I thought this movie was just okay when I watched it, but that knife scene has stuck with me since 2005.
Same
Both films and the series (at least the 2nd, never caught the 1st) were great. By the time the vibe shows up, it's too late.
damn I just watched 1 & 2 last night lol.. Mick is the best serial killer imo. If you could cover the TV series that would be dope as well!
The build up to the torture scene in the second film always gets my adrenaline going
I just realized that the actor who played Mick was also in another movie setting in Australia, which is Rogue.
Can proudly say I've been following for awhile, and I'm happy for your progress and your success. Here's to your journey 🍷
Apparently John Jarratt is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet!
He played the heroic farmhand in 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', who finds the missing girl.
He's superb.
One of the best horror movies I’ve seen
It just stays with you
Loosely based off the Peter Falconio and Ivan Milat cases. Both of them are darker than this movie ever could have been.
Can you elaborate?
@@sabinea3144 if you can comment here, then you have internet and can easily search it your self.
As a disclaimer this was all off the top of my head and some things may not be accurate. I think I got the overall of both but as always google is your friend and doing your own research is better than any second hand information could ever be
@@sabinea3144 What is there to elaborate???? You were just given all the info you need. Just write "Ivan Milat" to TH-cam or something.....
I've got good news.
A 3rd wolf creek is schedueled to come out this year (sometime in september) and it's written and directed by Mclean again
Bens character really confuses me as a half Maori who lives in Australia because his tattoo of the flag has a red star on it like on the NZ flag but its the shape of the stars from the Aussie flag aswell as the hei matau (bone or greenstone necklace he wears) makes me think hes more of a kiwi 🤷
u know many many kiwis live in both countries multiple times throughout their lives right? theres so many of us that are citizens of both. none of that is weird
@@cameronlamb1869 i meant the movie portrays him to be an Aussie but the aesthetic of his character looks to be a kiwi. And i never once said any of it was weird mate only that it confused me 🙂
Little known fact about Australia- down under, the sun rises from the west and sets in the east. And waves form on the beach and roll out to sea. And the final girl is always a dude.
Love this film and who better to review it! Keep up the great work. 🤗
The actor for the killer is often at Aussie convention and my god he’s the most lovely guy and is just there to have a good time with people and fans
Yet another great video! Keep it up man. Would love to see part 2 of the reddit iceberg tho.
Easily the most charismatic bad guy, iv ever watched.
Such a good film! Thank you for reviewing this, love to see it
that subtle and masterly placed "mick drugs them all" got me ... really bad ;D 5:23
When mick takes them to his place the sign on the gate says navi talim, then at the end when the fella is found the couple in the red combi are direct tribute to the falconio mystery
Did you know, Mick is actually a wholly unique character with no basis in reality whatsoever? It’s a little known fact that there has never been any person remotely like Mick-
Honestly though, the video explains where the idea for Mick comes from and yet every fifth post in this comment section is “Mick was actually based on serial killer Ivan Milat…”.
I loved the long silent part before he shoots
The background music in ur videos is just a walk down memory lane, literally reinstalling bully right now to play it just because I heard the music
wow what an honour to arrive early for the big man big will's video
I met Ivan Milat and I’ve never told anyone about it. It was very strange, but I thought nothing of it. Until I saw the news unfold.
Big Will, a man truly unimpressed by craters
Thanks for the upload bro
The bully music in the background was so good, the nostalgia
As an Aussie this just can’t be scary for me because of how funny mick is
I remember from my grandpa and his THICK Australian accent saying "heyyyy I know that dude..." (John jarrat/Mick) and as the guy bellow me said, he remembered him because he was a kids show host. 😅
"open wide, come inside, it's playyyy schooooool"
Man I literally just watched the two movies again a day before you made this video. Crazy!
It’s funny that the actor for Mick was on an Aussie tv show called better homes and gardens
I’m so glad I was one of the people to suggest this film to you!
Australian classic, my favourite scene is in one of the Wold Creek series is where Mick deals with the Highway Patrol police very efficiently...
You're a fan of a brutal serial killer??
@ Daniel: please don't be that guy
@@svenjansen2134 What guy??
Wolf Creek is one of the most chilling horror movies I've ever seen.
Just realized I had watched this movie years ago when I was younger, but I only realized because I remember the one scene where she's hiding and he's looking for her above.
Love the Bully/Canis Canem Edit soundtrack in the background...
You should watch the Wolf Creek Series that I watched on Stan {Australian streaming service). It was even better than the movies. It seemed realistic with smart main characters. That will help you explore the Australian outback even more
Doesnt the majority of the population live along the coastlines?
@@richardbutton1179 If you are extremely rich
I love this channel and I can rewatch ur vids over and over!! good job
The worst thing about the 'based on' part of this story, is that the real events are even scarier 😱
It’s great videos like this that made me become a Patreon member. Great breakdown of a great film. Keep up the good work!
If you want more Australian horror movies… PLEASE check out Body Melt (1993). It’s an especially brutal and disgusting movie that definitely deserves cult classic status.
Can I also recommend The Loved Ones!!
@@scottneil1187 Razorback is insane and has an insane backstory too lol. I need to revisit that one.
Where can I find any of those?
My daughter had to stay in hospital for about 2 months, so we were at the hospital all day every day for quite a while. It was so creepy to think he is literally next door. He was in his 70s at the time but it still creeped me out to know he was so close.
I found this movie years ago by accident. I think the fact that I had no idea of what it was about, it really affected me.
Mick’s snickering laugh makes the movie
this movie gave me nightmares as a child! his big ass searchlights looking for them!! Ahhhh so glad you covered this 😀
So happy you got round to this one
After going through the list of serial killers by the number of victims, I noticed a pattern: most target women, children, elderly women, homosexuals, teenage boys, and prostitutes. Usually killing with strangling.
If this tells you anything, it's that serial killers are really weak and pathetic. They only target those they feel they can overpower, and likely result from some form of sexual insecurity - getting rejected or being ashamed of their sexuality. They probably only do it because they're weak, miserable creatures with no worth who want to feel "empowered" by attacking the weakest, most vulnerable members of society.
Big fan of Wolf Creek. It's not something I'm in a hurry to watch often but it made an impression. 00:00 The Belko Experiement on tv. Also a great flick.
watched know almost all of your vidz, so great, you are doing an awesome job
i would love to see your take on I Saw The Devil
:)
Finally!!! I'm so glad you covered this awesome movie. mate!
I love hearing the Bully music playing in the background
Scary show. Doesnt need any silly clown faces or skin suit crap.
The guy who played "Mick" nailed it. Freaky character.
Liked it. Seriously chilling movie.
I haven't seen the first Wolf Creek so thanks for making this video :D Woot!
Australia is scary. Everything there will kill you; heat, wildfires, snakes, spiders, sharks, and humans. I’m terrified to visit there.
I always assumed one of the family members was holding it.
@@stevem.o.1185 and that would have made it similar to some real life serial killers - such as Dean Corll.
I absolutely love this film. I’d love to see the crater.
For me the most brutal and horrible moment in this movie was when Liz looks at recordings of previous victims and on one tape is a child!!!
The film was loosely based on Australian serial killer Ivan milat & kidnapping of a British couple. He shot the guy and the woman was found alive. She faced a lot accusations that she was responsible which she wasn't.
This was actually one of my favorite movies honestly. It is very bleak. John did so good at being creepy
In the intro, going off of the instruments, I thought that Duel from ULTRAKILL was playing 💀💀
Wolf Creek stuck with me for a few days after watching it - and that's saying something, because I've seen a lot of horror movies.
Hey Big Will, big fan of your videos. Could you perhaps cover the Hatchet Movies? One of my favourite Horror-Comedy Series.
Two good movies, a good TV series, and two good prequel novels. It's a nice little series.
I started choking on my chips when you paused and then said ‘Mik drugs them all’
