    Have the CF Elite version of this, love it. Easily one of my favorite bigger folders.
    One issue I take with your video though is frankly I never ever remember a time when spyderco was considered a distant second to BM. It's frankly a borderline fan boy comment. If anything among fishermen particularly the salt series has been a long standing must own.
    Benchmade definitely still has some QC issues even in 2020 as shown in many reviews. However I think it's improved and I've bought four more BM's in the last year.

      I do like the current G10 Griptilians, but I'm torn between that and spending a bit more for the 940. I've held the G10 Contego in hand and loved the blade shape but the handle shape wasn't right for my hand. I like the Barrage as well but have never held one. I'll check it out, thanks.

      I like my 940-1501, the blue and black Knifeworks version. It's my go-to EDC knife. If the coloration's a bit too much for you then I'd say pick the 940-2, which is very similar.

    one of the first knives i became obsessed with when i started buying good ones....lots of us remember Nutnfancy's matched Limited Edition Red and Purple Presidios......i have a plain 520, a large blk/blk tanto , a serr hollow ground model with the zytel scales and the 5000 auto .....the satin, M/A 520 is still my fave..a tank of a knife...buy 2

    I was _so_ hoping to hear you say you hadn't taken it to the sharpening bench yet - because my credit card would have been coming out! Still, this is what I expect from Benchmade, looks like a bit of a return to form. Straightforward, no weird soft-touch 2-part scales and strange textures. Easy to hold, _easy to clean._ Love the blade shape. Amazing what you can do with bronze bushings if they're done correctly. Thanks for the review!

    My personal opinion. I have a few 520's and this new 570. I EDC the 520, and was hoping this would replace it. It has not. When you put both knives up to each other, they are very similar in overall size, but the 570 feels much bulkier in hand. Most of the bulk is on the scales without the more intricate milling of the 520 (to cut down manufacturing costs?). I was much more impressed with the overall handling of the Boost than the 570 when I want a blade slightly longer than the old 520. I also don't pay attention to what the saber grip feels like, as I only use a saber grip for light cutting tasks. The 570's scale jimping on the spine (thumb rest) is less comfortable for me than the 520 for hard tasks with a hammer grip. I prefer the hammer grip on the 520 and the Boost. The 570 overall is a good knife, but if I'm rushing out the door I'll chose the 520 every time.

    Big knife, what I call an Indian style blade, I watch far to many old Westerns, I personally have enough working blades, and that is what this is. My 710 is saying she wants a FAT sister, so if fortune smiles in the near future expect a drop ship for the special finish to any knife an ApostleP edge. Love all my Benchmades, every one. God bless all

  • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
    @holdernewtshesrearin5471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    thats a handsome knife, son!
    But i still think my 581 barrage still gets my vote as most handsome BM with its sexy aluminum bolsters, gorgeous G-10 grip scales and awesome Bohler M390 blade with that wicked style that goes from mild mannered spear point shape to an extremely rakish and aggressive clip point as the swedge dissapears in the right light.
    Its a shame it comes as an assisted opener. I fixed mine up just right though by deactivating the assist mechanism easy peasy.
    now its a super slick manual as smooth and functional as any manual from birth.
    Of this class and style of BM that i think the barrage, griptillian and presidio etc belong to, i still think the 581 reigns supreme, but this presidio is speaking to me!
    i might have to have one. thanks for bringing it Rob.

    While the construction seems solid, personally, I can't get past the looks. that's just me.
    I am really happy to see the Benchmade is back with better fit and finish. I don't want to say it was lacking, but it's nice to see they are more consistent.
    as far as Spyderco vs Benchmade... idk rob... Taiwan Spydercos are pretty sick. the slysz bowie has got to be one of my favorite productions.

      JDubKnives Clearly Spyderco has been in the way up in design and quality while Benchmade was on the way down. I view them today as different (vive la difference!) but equal in quality, for the most part.

    That new Presidio looks great. I don't know what to make of Benchmade. I think they are trying to improve. Im sick of getting the results of poor QC (not just BM)..A recent 940 had to go back to BM. They acknowledged problems, fixed and returned in 12 days. Spyderco W&R wasn't so good..

    Great review as always Rob! I'm happy to hear you love it as much as I do! I was always a fan of the original Presidio and felt it was a very underrated knife. This new version however is leaps and bounds better, which is saying a lot. It's just like you said, this is a knife that's meant to be used and put to work. I personally can't wait for mine to start showing character marks just like my old one does.

    I wonder if the aluminum is too soft for the axis mechanism? It would be nice if they could get rid of the steel liners to make it a tad thinner. The new BM Anthem shows they can do the axis without liners.

    Poser is a strong word. I don't think either category of knife lovers deserves criticism. I've bought benchmade because of their edge holding capability, but also because the 940 Is a looker. I bought a zt 0920 yesterday because that recurve cpm 20cv (that i am incapable of sharpening btw)was gorgeous, but also because larger edc knives make me feel a bit more secure in day to day life. Couch enthusiasts (me) buy knives for their practicality and or style. Am I a poser because I work in a cubicle and only use my knives for food prep/cutting down boxes?

    The freek I just got isn't any better than my older benchmades. Centering was way off. Sharpening was really bad. I'd love to show you the blade grind on my 940-2 I got a few months ago. Looking at that blade from the top drives me nuts it's so uneven and ugly. I'm a lefty and I do love the axis lock so i keep getting sucked in and keep having bad luck.

  • @agger732
    @agger732 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always wanted to get the Original Presidio but the texture always turned me off. Great for gripping not so great on the pockets with shredding. When I saw the II coming out I knew I had to get it. Went to my brick and mortar benchmade dealer the other day and picked one up for $157 plus tax.
    I have a benchmade griptilian, cla, grizzly creek, 940, and a few HK knives and this Presidio II is by far my favorite out of them all!
    Going without the steel liners would have saved on weight but it still isn't bad.

    The only weak link with Benchmade (in my very limited experience) is the feeble Axis lock spring. My 940 spring broke within under a year of very light (pencil sharpening, fruit slicing etc) use. In fairness though, Benchmade covered this under their excellent lifetime warrranty (no mean feat with me living in the UK) and it's now as good as new. I'm sure a 'beefed up' pair of lock springs would entice more buyers into the Benchmade fold. As ever Rob, excellent review and thanks for posting.

      @ogenmatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      paul greenwood
      I've never thought about the impact of their warranty on non-US customers. While it's great that they fixed it, it'd be much simpler to have simply sent you a pair of springs if you were willing to install them. You can't simply buy the springs from them which is silly in my opinion.
      Glad yours is back in working order!

    • @knowyourhistory
      @knowyourhistory 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that was a fluke. I have a 710 that's almost 8 years old and it's working fine. I bet if they beefed up the springs that people would whine about it being hard to close. It's just too fun to constantly flick the axis lock.

    • @KingdomOfDimensions
      @KingdomOfDimensions 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible to make springs yourself for them out of steel music wire. Does require a bit of work bending them into the right shape and then tempering them but it's an option. I do think your broken spring was a fluke as I've never had one break, but it's certainly a concern I have that's not present in other companies' knives I use.

      @sputumtube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your response. Sounds like an excellent idea for someone with a modicum DIY talent. However I do not fit into that category and struggle to even empty the ashtray on my motorbike!

    • @KingdomOfDimensions
      @KingdomOfDimensions 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, I certainly haven't done much "omega spring" making. It's quite a bit of effort by hand, I'm sure BM uses a mechanical device to shape the springs and trying to reverse-engineer and build one would be beyond my capabilities. I wonder if someone will start selling springs, maybe in different gauges even, once the Axis lock patent has expired.

    Thank you for your review!! I've been eyeballing this knife and after watching your video decided to buy it. It's exactly what I've been looking for! It feels great, love the blade shape, that handle feels comfortable, I personally think its not too big and fits in my pocket just fine. Just a great knife! Sadly though I've been cutting all kinds of things with it (nothing that would be bad) enjoying it, and later ran a sharpening stone on it and somehow got a tiny burr or nick on the edge. I need a quality sharpener that this knife deserves, got any suggestions?

    @Cooldibs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Rob, I just wanted to give you my input on 3 knives that I have from benchmade with a 2018 build date. Compared to my other benchmade knifes with a build date of 2017 and below, the blade grinds are much more consistent and they seem to be getting better at centering. As far as blade play goes, 4 out of 5 have blade play in sacrifice for a free dropping blade. My 940-1 has zero blade play and a free dropping blade. The fit and finish seems the same or a little worse. Thee CF scales on my 940 have a lot of small grind marks, and my crooked river has some burrs on the liners. One thing I did notice is that benchmade no longer polishes the liners on the 940's. They leave the machine marks on them.

      Brandon Maples For a real daily user, definitely this one. It's much lighter and easier to carry, and still a very strong knife.

    I'm happy you said that about benchmade and Zero tolerance is more appealing to the eye that doesn't really use knives had the 0200 and 0300 fold up on me doing small chores never had a plastic grip close on my hand with half liners beat up and chipped

    Really excited to now own the presidio. The spear point blade is definitely sexy however the knife is quite butch. The only negative on this knife is due to the handles thickness it causes a hot spot where the pocket clip meets the inside of my palm. I also wish the thumb stud was a little larger. Still an excellent knife.

    Most ZT knives these days are for couch users. The hardest use they get is flipping them open and closed. And, it seems that most everything from ZT is just another flipper. Tiring quickly of those.

    Kinda disappointing the handles aren't solid Aluminum. A folding knife doesn't need steel liners in the handle to be strong, and all it does is add cost and weight. Reference the Cold Steel Code 4, or Polished Espada. Very handsome tactical knife regardless.

    I would love to see this blade compared to the Spartan Blades Pallas. They are both button lock folders with an aluminum construction for roughly (I think?) the same price.

      I was curious too, so I watched some of his videos. He seems like the "hipster" type of enthusiast. Mostly concerned with trendy mechanisms, materials, and name-dropping frequently so you know he's one of the cool guys.

    I had a good look at this. A really really nice knife - but I came to the conclusion that it really didn't offer anything more than my Cold Steel Swift (which is AO). Great blade (CTS XHP) and a very similar profile. Who knows though - I could talk myself out of being sensible yet :)

    Man benchmade second rate?? I respect u apostle what what are u smoking? I've owned all the brands and benchmade is the most useful while being and staying beautiful thru use

  • @ogenmatic
    @ogenmatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now if only Benchmade would fix their idiotic warranty. Disassembled = no warranty.
    90% of the fun of owning a Benchmade is taking it apart & tweaking it! (To me anyway)

    • @ogenmatic
      @ogenmatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plus they need to allow the sale of spare parts! Yes - they'll absolutely send you for free everything that can be screwed onto one without taking that pivot out or a scale completely off, but you can't have an omega spring or a phosphor bronze washer for any price from Benchmade. Silly.

    • @brianwhitlock3888
      @brianwhitlock3888 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ogenmatic what are you talking about? Benchmade couldn't care less if you take their knives apart and then send them in for warranty work. It's Spyderco that has that problem.

    no offense but I think you kinda took what he said to the extreme. Ive been in the military for years and law enforcement. Both areas where you see a lot of benchmade knives. Why because they are either given to them (military) or sold as the top knives in gun stores. If you go into the gun store or even something like cabelas the benchmade are pretty much the only high end knives sold there. Benchmade caters to that type of crowd. I think what he meant is like zt and spyderco cater to what little idiosyncrasies the knife nuts want ie crazy steels, flippers, bearings, steel lock bars etc. Where as the other group like he said in his video aren't going to care what high end new steel is, as an example. I don't think he was trying to say benchmades are not for knife nuts or as good. Personally though I like some benchmades but as far as design I think they are bit behind the times. I mean it wasn't till last year they put g10 on the griptillian. But I still think they make quality well built useful knives. This one is attractive wish they would have made it G10 though little bit of a heavy one.
