      Since my machine is quite basic, I'm probably going to do a lot by hand still, but it's so freeing to knit on some lace here and there and colour work here and there then pass off the plain bit to my machine 😅 I love it haha
      Thank you 😊 it's such a lovely green isn't it 🤩

    I adore your new summer tees😍 Now I really want to cast on and try to knit one too. But there are all of these other knitting plans as well😅
    I can't find myself to use my 80/90 grams of leftover sockyarn for socks either. When they can be combined with something else and become a garment😂 But now I have so many of them... 🤷‍♀️
    .. Come to Norway in May and I promise you can wear your wonderful peer gynt victory jumper😁 Welcome🇧🇻

      Thank you ☺️ you are such a fast knitter, you could get one of them cast on and off in a heartbeat 😉☀️
      Yes... Too much garment potential to be wasted on a sock haha although I don't think I need many more garments either haha
      Ah good to know... It is Norwegian wool after all.. it would be rude not to 😆

    I'm so glad you've found a way to use your gorgeous hand dyed yarn! Also, the problem often is that patterns for bottom up jumpers don't give you a measurement for yoke depth. That means you don't know where the jumper will sit around your armpit. You could calculate the yoke depth by counting the rows but who has time for that 😂 bottom up jumpers with a correct yoke depth are no problem (in my opinion).

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah ha.. that makes sense.. I suppose everything I have been making recently has either had a schematic or I've just used my measurements for yoke depth/length so I worked it out from there... Good to know!
      I'm so happy I'm finally using it too 👏👏

    • @petramanos
      @petramanos 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you try on garment for yoke depth rather than calculate the rows, doesn't that get frustrating having to block the garment every time you try it on? Or are you trying it on unblocked and then hoping that it doesn't change by much? I find that when knitting bottom up you can calculate the stitches per 10cm pretty easily by swatching or washing the first part of the garment and taking an accurate gauge before reaching the yoke.

    • @ninamariaknitting
      @ninamariaknitting 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@petramanos if I’m knitting top down then I know what my gauge is before and after blocking from my swatch. When I try the garment on I can then take that potential extra length/width into consideration. With bottom up when there isn’t a measurement for yoke depth then you’re either playing a guessing game or have to count the number of rows you have to work for the yoke to figure out the measurement. It’s just frustrating.
      Bottom up garments with a proper schematic aren’t a problem.

    I have been trying to use stash wherever possible over the last few years too, but when I'm making projects for my Husband and son I don't feel guilty about buying yarn if I need it for those projects, they feel more like I'm making a gift for them, rather than using up stash.

    Hurrah ! Someone has said exactly what I often think ! Why is there this epidemic of top down sweaters ? As you say, measure a favourite garment take a note of your arm hole to hem measurement and repeat.
    Also so many knitters say they don't like sewing or purl stitch That is fine, each to their own, but why ,oh why are most new and lovely patterns designed top down with a labyrinth of complicated increases.
    The famous Roxanne Richardson still prefers knitting bottom up so it's not just Emily and me.
    You have done well wth your knitting machine. I understand they can be very tricky to use. Clever you !

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hahaha I'm in good company I see :)
      I don't mind top down, but I find the complete outrage against bottom up very confusing.. but of course, each to their own. If one doesn't like the process and there's an alternative way, I guess it's all ok really :)
      But I'm very happy to be ok with knitting either way. I must try sideways sometime!

    Emily, you are giving me such hope. I am doing a bit of a binge watch because I am at the stage of your first video (the blood, sweat and tears one, lol) As I see you doing more projects and being so successful I feel like there is hope for me too 🫣 Can you tell me about how long you need for the basic tee that you make (like the adorable striped one?) I think I need to know where this „reise“ is going aka: yes, it is worth it?!? Are you at the „cranking out a sweater in 2 hours“ phase we all think exists after finally learning how to operate the machine? (Only half joking here 🤩)

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh there is always hope :) I would say it depends on your machine, since mine is worked all by hand, as in, I have to lay the wool over the needles by hand rather than it going through the carriage like most of them it takes longer. And I have to hook it under the black hooks so it's a little more fiddly than some others.
      For me, if I made a basic tee today, I could knit the first panel, in a day and then the next one tomorrow. But that's also because I get sore elbows from using the machine for longer than an hour haha
      SO... it depends haha but I know some people can definitely do it in 2 hours ;) I just don't have elbow strength or enough wardrobe space ;)
      If you're struggling, make sure you've checked it all over, so you know you're not fighting an uneven battle. Cleaning up the machine, oiling it, replacing dodgy parts or needles and knowing how your machine works is going to help you a lot :)

    • @lynnemarie7885
      @lynnemarie7885 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@emilykatemadethis okay cool! The lovely lady I bought my machine from kept her machine in PRISTINE condition, so I am really lucky. On day one though, I learned a valuable lesson about forcing the carriage and broke a needle (user mistake 100%) Things run fairly smoothly with the machine in general though, and I have one more needle to spare, *gulp*. I think I am just overwhelmed with all the manual adjustments for everything and the fiddling around. Just letting you know, I am (fingers crossed) picking up a double bedded in my area FOR FREE. There was another offer around for under 15€ in my area as well, that was even in better condition. The free one will need replacement needles (I can already tell) and a good clean. So I will have to scout out new needles... You see, I am in VERY dangerous waters here. My husband ist getting concerned tehee.

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lynnemarie7885 oh wow what a lovely find! I also made that same mistake of forcing the carriage and then made some awful chips on the bakelite needle board 🫣 I can't find new needles anywhere for my machine so I hope the spares I have will keep me going for years haha
      I admit I looked through all the manuals trying to learn everything at once but in reality, it does make more sense to just do one thing slowly and correctly until you're comfortable. I was doing increases and decreases "wrong" for at least half of my projects haha it's a big learning curve but equally it's just knitting. It's meant to be fun.. you can try something smaller like making squares and then seaming them up later to make a blanket. Then you just have a small project each time where you practice the techniques.

    Love watching your videos and keeping up with your endeavours, you seem to become quite resourceful, good for your! This video made me wonder: how many knitted clothes you want to HAVE and OWN, or is it just for pure love of knitting and making? You have about 25 kg of yarn, if I remember it correctly - so over the thumb to assess this amount of yarn, this is equivalent to about 50 jumpers or 100 tees? So I guess unless you want to hoard all this yarn in the form of finished projects, you will have to figure out a way how to gift or sell your knitted projects. Blankets or hats or whatever for people you love and care for, or simply for unknown people in need?
    So I wonder what are your thoughts on this issue: consumerism and even hoarding in the name of hobby creativity?!? I am asking this myself, and I am trying to knit more for people in my life (however, not everyone likes and appreciates knitted items) and I try to go more into high quality instead of quantity: one tee that is close to ideal for my taste and needs instead of three or five or even more that are fine and cute and all - but I do not REALLY need more than one or two...

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The short answer would be no, I do not feel guilty or like I'm overconsuming.
      The longer answer would be:
      Knitting brings me immense joy, and the connections and friendships I have made and will make are worth a lot more to me than worrying that I own 2 of the same tee.
      The amount I will knit in a lifetime will never equate to even half the amount of clothes that are currently sitting in a clothes shop right now, so I don't feel bad or like I'm hoarding.
      I enjoy the process of knitting, from planning, to buying to knitting to wearing. I love that I'm bringing history back to life by knitting from old patterns and I love supporting people who are bringing out beautiful designs and wool that are alive today.
      My wardrobe is filled with clothes that are 15-20 years old.. I wear everything and I rotate it all regularly. I barely throw anything out, and it has to have been mended several times before I will. Even then, I feed it to my compost worms ha
      My stash isn't jumper quantity laden. I couldn't make 50 jumpers even if I tried haha It's the cones that bring up the number, and they will easily be turned into delightful things.
      Of course things will be made for family and friends, and eventually I might sell or frog and remake some things. I don't just buy to hoard.
      Knitting and this TH-cam channel bring me immense joy, so I will be knitting up anything and everything that brings me joy :)

      @@emilykatemadethis great, sounds like you have your priorities straight. I did not want to attack or criticise you, I am just wondering in general and about myself and thinking aloud. I do understand the joy of knitting and learning new knitting tricks and skills, and just producing and owning items we are proud of. However, it seems so many knitters are worried about their stash quantity as long as it is in form of unknitted yarn, but I never/rarely hear much about "the problem" of the stash of knitted items.
      I guess with time and passion, each new knitted item could (strive to) be great, well made or fit great to the evolving body or to the evolving personal needs and evolving wardrobe and style, or just bring joy by making it and owning it and wearing it...
      In this podcast it stroked me that you are busy busy knitted the yarn up primarily to allow yourself to buy more yarn, and not because you need more or better tees. I might have understood it wrong or too literally. Cheers :-)

    I'm feeling soooooooooo jealous of your lovely knitting machine! I really must get my broken one out of storage and get it serviced somehow. I understand your relief about finally being able to knit with your stash. I have yarn that is more than 11 years old sitting on cones and I would love to machine knit it. I simply cannot knit fast enough to knit my stash either and it's enjoyable to buy yarn and plan with it. My cupboard is full so no more yarn for me.
    I take it none of your cones are enough for a man's jumper and he won't wear stripes? He'll keep - just let him know you want to get through some of your little bits before you buy more and I'm sure he'll be understanding.

      @emilykatemadethis  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am so behind on replying - woops!
      No, the issue isn't actually that there isn't enough yarn on the cone, it's that my machine doesn't have enough needles to knit a man sized jumper on that gauge. I believe it'll work using a fingering weight yarn but not the light fingering weight that I have. But I have plans for the cones already ;)
      I am excited to hear how your machine gets on at the 'doctor' ;)
