@@MusicMattersGB The most important thing about learning is you must enjoy it... My first real lesson, (60 years ago) I arrived at my teachers with my little Spanish acoustic guitar under my arm and was greeted with "Why did you bring that"?... "Well next time bring a pencil and paper"!

"Inessential notes" is perhaps itself a misnomer, since a piece a music could be very dull indeed if the melody contained only chord tones. "Inessential notes" are often an essential ingredient in the "Tension" component of the "Tension and Release" concept. Great video, as always.

I agree that it’s an unfortunate accepted term but it really means that they are not essential to the harmony. Thanks for your positive comment.

In my opinion a better term would be non-chord tones instead of inessential notes.

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That is a term that is sometimes used - or non-harmony notes

@@MusicMattersGB I much prefer non-chord tone over non-harmonic tone, because especially with the tonic and dominant chords, non-chord tones can be and often are harmonic. Like for example, CM7 would be viewed from a Classical Music context as C major with the B being a suspension of G7 over it, that then resolves to an octave. That's a harmonic non-chord tone.

I'm going to rename my sessions at the piano "Gareth Time" since you give me so many ideas about how to practice. I tend to be a technique junky since an inner ear problem has made me allergic to some rhythm patterns. I started this week practicing sequences in every key, and it helps to develop my finger memory. Now I can throw in an échappée de temps en temps. And I should also think about the beat.

Hi Gareth. Is it possible to have an accidental, say F not F# or is it according to the key signature. You say it is always unaccented, but below in the comments you are asked if it can be accented and you say yes. Have I read that correctly or is it a typo. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for giving formal terms..becuase I play all 12 notes and im not always formal.
it'll make even more sense if you play the guitar...in the Key of D MAJOR/Bmin
becuase the NOTES at the NUT are in E min pentatonic or E min7 add4
I'll simple see the E min as the ii or dorian ( as a guide).....
In other words...I can play ANY NOTE at the nut or let it RING OPEN...
I'll simply make D Maj chord shape....against the Open G and high E string..
    The 5th is in suspens ( ommited or not) D, F#, G, D, E....D Maj add 4/9.
Then Im simply going to pick the open A...the 5th is below the D
It's a pretty sounding chord.. FOLLOW directions....apply the lessons.
Im simply going to play the D#/Eb note..with my pinky into the D note.
    or Eb/D# Major dyad...then D maj dyad....
Then im going to apply it to OTHER CHORDS...such as the A MAJOR..
play into the A mix or V chord...
I already know I can play C Maj or C Maj7 or C maj add2...as the N6 an Intserted chord...
But this sounds so much prettier. :-P
Im going to play an In complete F MAJOR chord against the open B and E
    5, 1, 3 ( inverted) 5, 1, 3, #11, 7.....or C 4, 6, 7, 5...
Then im going to simply reach over with my pinky play the G# note on the low E string
    BEFORE I play the A Maj or A Maj add 4 ( it's just the Open G string...it sounds softer )
    Then simply resolve it into the D MAJOR ( R, 5, R, 3)
There's other ways I can play into the A chord.
    Bb into the A Chord,
    A mix b2....is the V of D Harmonic MAJOR.
Thats....D#/Eb......G#......F.....C notes are NOT in D MAJOR
    I could play A# into B min...but that's typical B Harmonic min stuff.
Apply different LESSONs to make different cool/Beautiful music...
    I used all 12 NOTES....

@@MusicMattersGB Im going to apply the other lessons too
      In D MAJOR/B min........work the D min or B maj7 into it. :-P
There's different ways im going to do it...
this isnt a popular chord to make on the Fretboard.
      Inverted A Maj chord...
( but my index is going to barr the D and G note) A7 add 4
      5, 1,3, 4, b7
Then im simply going play the G as 5, 3,1 too..but bar the C# and F#
      G Maj7 add9
Then Im going to play the inverted D min chord or F Maj dyiad
      ( F, 3, 6, 7 ) or b3, 5, 1, 2 ( D min add 9)
before I play the A add4 into the D MAJOR
      or F Maj7 add #4....E min A Maj D maj ( ii, V. I)
      or from the D Maj ( with open G and E) ..
Im simply to play the inverted D minor or B maj7 after
or Against the Open A note....
Or/and Play the D note with my Pinky on the A string
      1. b3, 5. 8, 9
Then simply Play the G Maj traid ) G Maj add6...
Then Im simply going to play the F ....Before I play
      E min A Maj D MAJOR ( ii, V, I)
That's why i said Im going to use E dorian as a guide..
it's just different ways Im going to play into the ii , V, I progression
