  • Jon sat down for a conversation with Leslie Rutledge, the Attorney General of Arkansas - the first state to pass a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. He asked her to explain why the state took this health care decision out of parents’ hands, and why they’ve overridden the guidelines issued by every major medical organization.

    “I wasn’t prepared to have a Supreme Court argument today”
    This sentence really says a lot about how other interviewers have treated her. She sees asking “what doctors recommend the policy you’ve enacted” as an unfairly high bar to have to meet in an interview, but it should be the norm.

    How freaking awesome is to watch an interview, where the interviewer just doesn’t let the bullshitter get away with their bullshit, and is very constructive and surprisingly polite at the same time! This is a Masterclass in interviewing and should be studied like that:)

      It's unfortunately an interviewing style that burns bridges. You get to have a few interviews where people are grilled, but then the next person you attempt to interview says, "We saw that last one, we don't want that to happen to us." But your reputation or your organization's reputation follows you.
      In general in an interview you have to let people spew their bullshit allowing the person to feel like they got something out the interview and hope that the audience can form their own thoughts about the ideas, maybe framing the piece with a meta narrative, talking and informing the viewer with real informed statistics and the interview is only part of the story.
      Interviews are done the way they are to let the interview prove their ideas are dumb by saying them out loud. The standard styles exist because they're repeatable.
      ** Edit to clarify. I agree with Jon's point of view, AG of Arkansas is clearly cherry picking and being a weasel to pass whatever she already believed and wanted to pass. This response was only related to the style of combative interviews vs let them say bullshit.

    One of the greatest things about Jon is that he doesn't just let the people he interviews slide on their BS. He calls them out and holds them accountable. 1) The article talks on the massive increase in kids identifying as Trans with the highest numbers in CA and NY. It also shows the total number of surgeries teens under 18 received as of 2021. That number is now higher in 2023, and those numbers are only those that health insurance paid for. It does not account for out of pocket surgeries.
      2) Associated press: June 2022. Talks about how a leading transgender health association lowered the age for minors to 15 to have surgery.
      3) Article talks about the fact that puberty blockers have unknown risks and are still to this day, not FDA approved, and have no actual measurements of how much or for how long. Plus, there is a potential increase in osteoporosis because bone loss density, loss of bone growth, cancer, and infertility, and worst still, unknown neurological effects that only take place during natural puberty years.

    There is something my dad (a seasoned litigator) taught me from a very young age. Something Jon exemplifies right here. It's the idea that you are not obligated to take someone at their word. And the idea that if someone is going to present something with confidence, they should know how to back it with confidence. The great thing about telling the truth is that you can also say where you get your truth from. I love that Jon is so good at this.

      Comparing gender confusion to cancer is kind of a terrible way to argue a point though. They are in no way the same thing or on the same level. I love Jon Stewart, but this was a weak arguing point. Jon even helped me personally when he fought for the pact act recently, but I still don't thing he's got a very good argument on this point. I don't support the mutilation of children, physical or hormonal. The human brain isn't fully developed until around age 25. This lady is trying to prevent children from mutilating themselves who may later change their minds. If you're confused about your gender you for sure shouldn't be making decisions that permanently affect your health and wellbeing for the rest of your life. Once someone is an adult they then have the freedom to go on hormones or get whatever surgery they want. I support the prevention of child genital mutilation.

    • @theresa7328
      @theresa7328 ปีที่แล้ว +153

      @@nh251 Why is it a terrible comparison? Kids can't have surgery until they are over 18. Before 18, we are ALL on hormones. That's where we get breasts and beards and periods and deeper voices from. Some people are just on the wrong hormones. And it is somewhat reversible. After puberty, some trans women will have to have surgery in adulthood if their voices are too deep, so the deep voice is not reversible for some, but is for others. I've had cancer and I have friends who are trans. Cancer is a cakewalk in comparison, and people bring you casseroles.

    • @DrHemroid
      @DrHemroid ปีที่แล้ว +153

      @@nh251 A simple misunderstanding. Doctors aren't recommending genital surgery, they are recommending hormone blockers and hormone replacement. Also, the cancer comparison makes more sense if you understand gender dysphoria is life altering and potentially fatal. But you shouldn't believe a stranger on the internet, you should believe the doctors who have spent years researching this topic and have had every argument you can imagine already.

    • @DrTssha
      @DrTssha ปีที่แล้ว +74

      @@theresa7328 Slight addendum here: the surgeries for voice aren't always effective, or have as good results as the patient might like. Honestly, it's all the more reason to make puberty blockers more accessible because puberty is permanent.
      Those who argue "wait for adulthood" are leaving out the fact that the changes puberty inflicts are also permanent! We can't unwiden hips, we can't reliably undeepen voices. Breast removal costs thousands of dollars. We could prevent all of this, and cheaply too. But these people don't care, because they don't understand us and don't want to understand us. They are confident they know the truth, but their ignorance is obvious the minute they open their mouths.

      “In light of available evidence, gender reassignment of minors is an expenmental practice. Based on the studies examining gender identity in minors, hormonal interventions may be considered
      before reaching adulthood in those with firmly established transgender identities, but it must be done with a great deal of caution, and no irreversible treatment should be initiated. Information about the potential harms of hormone therapies is accumulating slowly and is not
      systematically reported. It is critical to obtain information on the benefits and risks of these treatments in rigorous research settings.”

Did you know the Swedes conducted their own systematic review and concluded the risks outweigh the benefits for the use of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones to treat gender dysphoria in minors? @@skumflum3768 certainly there can be medical "fads" where over prescription of medicine or treatments will be over done. The way over prescription of Ritalin and other amphetamine salts during the 1990s for example, and the over prescription of opioids. More than anything this stems from financial kickbacks doctors receive for prescribing as much as possible. This is solely a problem in the structure of our Healthcare systems. And do doctors make the wrong choices sometimes? Absolutely. But to say there is an epidemic of children being pressured into treatments that they choose to do and later regret is a lie. They are the exception and not the rule. But this minority is used as a tool to push the ultimately religious agenda to do away completely with a young persons access to important care. On the political level they are throwing out the baby with the bathwater, when, as Jon says, these decisions are solely between children and their doctors. The science is in, doing away with all treatment until adulthood will do far more damage than the minority that jump the gun being confused teenagers. But again, the confused child or teenagers business is not the states business.
      Why aren't they passing the same laws to prohibit circumcision? Circumcision is genital mutilation that children don't agree to and is put upon them. Many of which come to regret, and claim to have their sex lives ruined by the procedure. But MOST don't. I myself wasn't circumcised till I was 6. It was horrible, don't regret it one bit! But if I did regret it and you can certainly find "experts" to speak out against it, does that give the state the right to ban the practice all together until you turn 18? Or does circumcision have special protection having Judeu-christian roots?
      No, people will kid themselves that it's "to protect the children!", but the motivation is religious. And these people haven't the faintest idea what they're talking about. You can tell they've never knowingly met a single passing trans person in their lives! They make it obvious when they pass incredibly stupid things like "bathroom bills"! 😂 do you realize what extreme uproar there will be by these fearful bigots when fully bearded manly people, born female, start walking into women's bathrooms looking more like men than their own husbands. And how many fully passing females, born men, with a rack larger than your mothers will be taking a dump next to you!? It becomes so obvious, all these people know of these other humans lives is fed to them through the sick mouth of their pastors, and conservative talking heads.
      Its not about the children...
      Over 10,000 children die A DAY, due to easily preventable causes world wide. But no, the real tragedy is a few money grubbing doctors going along with a confused kids wishes, and later on regretting it. Boo hoo, let's just make it all illegal!!! As for kids who it saves? Ignore them, they're sinners! But precede to chop off the tip of that new born baby! Millions of whom will come to resent you for it, but hey, hygiene and Abraham yo!

      @@curtisowen3233 There is much to discuss in this context. It is evident that individuals, including politicians, may be driven by personal motives and religious beliefs. However, the only viable approach to organizing our society is through the exercise of free speech. Freedom of speech is not a mere philosophical notion; instead, it is a crucial instrument for preserving the cohesion and stability of our thoughts and societies. Currently, there is a trend towards restricting the questioning of transgender ideology, which itself is an ideology, resulting in conflicts.
      Regarding the medical facts, there are no long-term studies available on the effects of puberty blockers in transgender adolescents. While there have been studies on hormones, they are not without significant and potentially permanent side effects.
      It is worth noting the existence of psychogenic contagions, which have a documented history spanning 400 years. Several recent examples include the Satanic daycare ritual panic in the 1980s, as well as the spread of cutting and bulimia among white teenage girls in schools.
      Considering the statistics on rapid-onset gender dysphoria, there has been a 1500% increase, primarily among white teenage girls. As teenage girls have historically been most susceptible to psychogenic contagion, this could be a plausible explanation.
      Research, as previously mentioned, shows that 80% of individuals experiencing gender dysphoria eventually desist without intervention, which is why Sweden has ceased medical treatment for minors. This topic undoubtedly warrants further discussion.
      It is not fair to label people as hypocritical for prioritizing this issue over the deaths of thousands of children due to other causes. Human nature does not allow us to empathize equally with every issue. As Stalin allegedly remarked, "One death is a tragedy, but a million is just a statistic."

The countries that have (Finland, Sweden, and the UK) have concluded that the risk factors for these interventions remain largely unknown and are not being systematically reported. These reviews have also highlight the lack of data collection when it comes to patient outcomes, including rates of detransition and regret.
      These are not fringe and/or right wing political groups expressing concerns.
      Are you familiar with what happened in what was once the world’s largest pediatric gender clinic? The NHS commissioned an independent review following a 4000% increase in referrals to the clinic (i.e., the Tavistock’s GIDS) and in light of the concerns of several whistleblowers. The whistleblowers’ concerns regarding the managing of the clinic and its “affirmative model” (rushed assessments, lack of data collection, lack of safeguards, diagnostic overshadowing) were then corroborated by an independent panel of experts. Further, the review’s interim report (which also bases its information on two systematic reviews on pediatric gender affirmation) concluded that there is at the moment no way for professionals and clinicians to distinguish which patients will benefit from these interventions versus those who will not.
      Bear in mind the crucial fact that the original Dutch study (which introduced the use of blockers for the treatment of GD), used a very small and selective sample of minors without any preexisting MH comorbidities and whose Sx began prior to the onset of puberty. These sample is not at all representative of many of the patients currently being prescribed PB. Not only that, the Cass interim report also asserts that the benefits of these interventions remain uncertain even for patients whose profile closely resembles the Dutch cohort (i.e., childhood onset, no coexisting psychopathology). The NHS no longer prescribes PB outside of clinical research settings.
      Why do you think people do not hear about this part of the story? After all, this pertains to the NHS and to what used to be the largest pediatric gender clinic.

They make serious thought out choices. These extremists are politicizing what’s already a difficult private choice.

      Yeah it's dumb. She's an idiot for not having studies on hand. The real figure is something like 80-90%. The other 10% that don't desist continue to have problems even if they do get surgeries etc. But they are generally adults at that stage and this bill is about children.

      You can fact check it yourself. I got the number from a pediatric medical book. They have known about people growing out of gender dysphoria since the 70s. Maybe you should do some research on John Money and what puberty blockers can do to children. Judith Butler said herself that queer theory is about breaking down sex boundaries including the boundaries between adult and child. Even the trans flag was designed by a pedophile.

      @@Bareq_99 And yet, when it comes to minors, all systematic reviews-the gold standard of scientific evidence for guiding medical recommendations-have concluded that the evidence for pediatric gender affirmation is lacking (of “low to very low” certainty/quality as concluded in these reviews). As far as children/adolescents go, the scientific literature does not actually show, with any reasonable degree of certainty, that the use of puberty blockers or cross sex hormones decreases rates of negative mental health outcomes; the risk factors associated with these are not properly reported; and data on the long-term outcomes for this population is not accurately tracked. Not only do we have the findings of the systematic reviews (look at the Nice reviews linked in the Cass Interim report website or Ludvingsson et al., 2021) we also have the WHO coming out just a few weeks ago with a Q&A addressing their upcoming guideline for transgender people: question no. 5 “Q. Why will the guideline only cover adults and not also children or adolescents? A. The scope will cover adults only and not address the needs of children and adolescents, because on review, the evidence base for children and adolescents is limited and variable regarding the longer-term outcomes of gender affirming care for children and adolescents.” The WPATH itself failed to commission a systematic review to back its recommendations for minors citing a lack of studies. My question to you is, if the evidence for pediatric gender affirmation remains lacking/limited/uncertain, why is it that some media sources call it “life saving” (when the benefits remain unclear), “medically necessary” (when the risk factors and long term outcomes of patients remain unknown), or “settled science” (when the most empirically rigorous studies on the topic directly contradict this claim)?
      Things are no adding up.
