      Ken Bird it is amazing. I hope the store can continue in operation with the covid virus doing so much damage to business and life in general. Hello from the uk. God bless the USA.

      @@geraldashton8589 The problem now is that the Lord & Taylor Company has declared bankruptcy and is closing all their stores. NO word yet on the fate of the organ.

    Thanks so much for posting this DocBower. I was bumming that I wasn't able to change my SD card fast enough when it ran out of space just before this performance began. An awesome conclusion to the 2013 Wanamaker Organ Day! This organ truly has to be experienced in person to appreciate the incredible dimensionality of the tonal pallet in the Grand Court, and I highly recommend hearing it live. The after hours concert was fabulous, as the sometimes annoying store noises were completely absent.

      I plan to attend personally some day. Given that the venue is not a true concert hall, the accoustics appear to be quite good! A grand sound in a grand building! Phiily - you are blessed to have such a great musical tradition.

    All retail stores should have a colossal seven-stories-tall pipe organ, symphonic orchestra and chorus.

    Why on earth is it necessary to have an orchestra performing when this organ can make any and nearly every sound necessary to perform this piece. It says - Organ Day - not Orchestra day.

      If I may respectfully disagree. Having played pipe organ for a small brass ensemble & choral group for a number of years 35-40 years ago, I can attest to the power & the grace of the combination.of organ, brass, tympany & chorus. When properly conducted by a skilled conductor, the "voices" can play off one another & combine to create a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. While any good pipe organ (much less this grande dame in Philadelphia) can comfortably stand alone, aa can any ensemble great or small, combining their respective voices creates something magical. I personally love to hear these wonderful ensembles of fine musicians create this amazing sound. This performance at Wanamaker is breathtaking! Bravo to them!

      It goes back to John & Rodman Wanamaker’s association with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, the zimbolists and Bach’s, and Curtis....of Curtis Institute. It is an orchestral organ, and they do sound great together and they have to fill up a huge 9 story room.

    Bill Martin. Don't tell me how to tune a pipe organ. I know how to tune a pipe organ. I've done it for 15 years and very well thank you.

      +Steven Middleton Mr. Middleton, with all due respect, surely you know from your experience that tuning 400+ stops takes a lot longer that adjusting 10 brass instruments. I think those who understand tuning were shocked that you would suggest the organ be tuned instead of the instruments. To be honest I don't know why they use an orchestra at all. That organs has enough reeds to do any job.

      Coming back to this - Why would you tune 26,000 pipes instead of 10 brass instruments. Besides, this organ in never in tune perfectly. It is too big and you can't keep up with it

    organ should have been tuned to the brass band be for the performance.

      +Steven Middleton One does not simply 'tune' a pipe organ. rofl

    • @WCM1945
      @WCM1945 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Steven Middleton You are kidding, of course... But just in case you aren't, you should know that "tuning" any pipe organ - especially the Wannamaker - is a herculean task, and is usually an on - going operation. If anything, any discrepancy in tuning can be much more easily remedied within the orchestra.

    • @wljmrbill
      @wljmrbill 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Steven Middleton you tune the orchestra/band to the organ...only an electronic with modern boards/transposer could you reasonably tune the organ to a band..but all usually play a=440 in USA anyway.

    • @sstroh08
      @sstroh08 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Steven Middleton good luck with that.... this thing has 34000 pipes that all individually need tuned lol
