I got lucky a few years ago and found a place on the river not far from my normal fishing spots, about 200yds long that for the last few years at least, almost always has perfect bait size bluegill, 30-45 minutes and I am good for a day or two.
I always take frozen skipjack, chicken breast, and commercial cured carp just in case I can't find any fresh skipjack, whitebass, or bluegill when I get on the river. The frozen stuff doesn't work as well but I have caught decent cats on all of them.
Fresh skipjack has been my best producer, with blugill a close second, but chicken breast also works very well for me.
I haven't been able to fish at all yet this year due to surgeries but when I can get on the river again I want to get some skipjack and try salt curing it. Dave had some good success with that earlier in the year.
