I went looking online to help discover the answer to this mystery. According to the National Wildlife Federation article I found, it said that underdeveloped Moms sometimes will drop a leg if she feels threatened by the slings & will sometimes eat the egg sack because either the eggs went bad OR the Mom lacked nutrients she needs.
Yes, I just made a similar comment.... they can sometimes either feed on it, or their slimgs can... being a young spider, she may not have known the sack was bad till it was too late
Hey Petko, so sorry about that poor girl. Yeah, it looks like her "hydraulic system" is failing ... something must have caused her so much stress that she probably felt the need to drop a leg (and maybe even distroy her Eggsac). I can´t even imagine what could have caused her so much stress, but just to make sure ... check for left over pray items that could potentially hide out in her enclosure and/or external parasites or " intruders" (like a fly or something?)??? Or maybe the Eggsac itself caused her stress, or she was not that mature after all ...!? Wishing your girl the best and i hope she can recover ... 🥺❤🙏
Since he said he didn't think she was mature, could it have been the equivalent of a pre-teen pregnancy? As in she was just barely mature enough to breed, but needed another molt for full maturity.
I ask because that happened to one of my roommate's cats. When he got Juno, the vet said she most likely already had a litter, although she was only around 6 months old, it stunted her growth, and at 7+ years old is around half the size of his other cats. I know mammals and arthropods are very different, but could something similar have happened?
@@Lightman0359 I think it could be very possible, altough i´m no expert ... there are far weirder things that are happening in the animal kingdom than "stress reaction because of prematurity" so it might be ... 🧐🤔
The very first tarantula I got was from a small breeder. The tarantula already looked a bit wird, but the breeder said it might be due to stress, because it was a exponat on a small convention.
I took it home and it refused to eat and aslo dragged a leg. It dropped parts of the leg the next couple days and also started to drag other legs. It was generaly not moving much and also didnt respond well to touch.
The breeder took it back and replaced it with another - this one I have for over 10 years now.
The breeder said he very rarely encounter something like this but has no idea what the cause is. Could be anything from stress to falling to ingesting germs. The last bit was werid for me back then, because I couldnt feed it. but in your case I would not be surprised, if the metallica had a invested eggsack days prior and the bacteria infected the tarantula aswell.
But I really just encountered this weird dropping once and so far I have really no reliable information... google gives all sorts of answers, but none is really consistent.
i am no specialist but my first thought is that maybe she poisoned herself by eating from the bad eggsack
Most likely she was insanely stressed and it caused her to amputate and eat the sack. Having an egg sack on some tarantula species alone cost them a lot of energy and is stressful for them to guard and keep the sack in good condition, she probably noticed some mold happening inside from rotten eggs and the stress spike caused her to destroy it and remove some limbs
I can’t believe I’m saying this about an arachnid, but I hope she gets better asap! Poor girl! My heart hurts watching her being so stressed out.
It's not too outlandish to hope a tarantula gets better, they're an animal like anything else, I have over 20, great pets.
At 2:50 of the video in the bottom right corner you can see the substrate "move". Is it possible an uneaten roach has been living in the tank, stressing her out during care of the egg sack and caused some of these issues? It's very quick, hard to notice the movement. Could have been a cut in footage though, maybe you tried to open the tank during that split second.

Oh poor girl, she doesn’t look good at all. When she rolled coming down off the bark and lost her leg at the same time, I thought to myself she’s not gonna make it much longer. I pray that I’m wrong and she makes a quick, pain free recovery. On a more positive note though, it made me so happy to see your video in my feed! I swear I was starting to get withdrawals!
Sorry Petko, how disappointing. Are you certain there isn’t a beetle. or other potentially dangerous insect in her enclosure? I had to stop using superworms because of that problem. My Avic-Avic was doing all sorts of weird behaviors including not eating and never going into her den. One morning I found a very fat Superworm beetle out terrorizing her! In any case, poor Metallica Mama! 🙏
Sorry you lost the eggs petko and two legs hope she recovers! I just ordered 5 more tarantulas my collection is up to 7 T's one jumper, and two scorpions 😊 just heading home to feed them and check on them now.
I am so sorry Petko! It was hard for me to watch that poor tarantula. I hate when any creature suffers. Hopefully she isn't. I hope she gets well soon!
I'm thinking something spooked her. Pocei's are flighty, anxious critters so it could have been a shadow on the wall or a crack of thunder, and felt the need to self-amputate and discard her egg sack at the same time. And since she lost two legs in a short period of time, it's causing the hydrolic pressure in her body to not work effectively. Just make sure she is hydrated and let her be and hopefully she recovers well in her next molt.
Man that suxs. The only thing I can think of would be she sucked up some of the black goo by accident. My uneducated guess is that the poisons from the black goo collected at the end of the toes so she tore them off. I've seen a doc that showed a wolf spider ripping off it's leg after getting stung.

I hope your spidy is ok, it is so weird to see a tarantula lose a complete leg! Never seen or heard about that before. Keep a close eye on her,maybe its some kind of disease? I know nothing about spiders
I hope she recovers. I lost 3 of my slings yesterday due to the heat wave here drying out their water dishes too fast
@@Christinas_creatures Aww I’m sorry for your losses. I had a similar experience at the beginning of summer. I started keeping tarantulas last fall, so this is my first summer with them, and I did lose a couple when it started to get hot. I didn’t realize that it would dry out the enclosures so much faster. especially since it’s so dry here in the winter, and somewhere humid in the summer, I thought the season change would have the opposite effect. I did end up losing a couple of slings because of it. I hope the heat wave eases up soon where you are and the rest of your slings stay healthy! 🩷
@jennfursketeer2323 yeah I thought the humidity would be a good thing too here but definitely not for the little ones. I'm suspecting that's what got my mm C versicolor 2 weeks ago too 😢. I've moved all off the top shelves now do hopefully it'll help. That seems to be where I'm getting most losses. Also watering every other day and considering doing it every day.
@@Christinas_creatures Stop giving water altogether when its exceptionally hot, it just evaporates too fast and causes humidity spikes which can kill them. You can get water into them with good quality gutloaded food for a few days. They wont dehydrate that fast, but humidity will kill them

i dont think there is enough room in the enclosure for her to fall and get it hurt most likely she somehow got it stuck or pinched somewhere
I have heard somewhere that Sometimes a T can drop a leg when they have an egg sack, for the purpose of eating it.... it is weird she has lost or damaged multiple tho

I think she got sick from eating her eggsack. And thats why she is behaving so wierd and losing her leggs.
I had a jumping spider do the same thing, minus the eggsack. I thought she was doing well, then noticed one leg missing, then another, and another... for seemingly no reason at all. A week later, she was in a death curl. :( No idea what caused it. She was still pretty young and shouldn't have died that early.

My T. gigas bend her leg somehow on molt so leg was on her back. Poked leg into right position, and when she could reach it, grab it and pulled off like thinking "finally got rid off this annoying piece of ***!" Leg grow back almost full size on next molt, pretty amazing :O
my metallica tore off a leg and a pedipal when she molted I was really sad. but she is fine

Please learn from it, keeping the egg sac with the mother almost always isnt worth it, always pick it up, for the tarantula sake the slings and your sake. I had stuff like that happen with pokiez and gbb's. If they dont eat the sack picking up the slings is just a mess and a risk for them, making an incubator is super simple easy and quick, there are proper diy methods i believe jon3800 and rob had some guides.
Im sorry this has happened to you, dont take it too hard stuff like this happen all the time in the hobby.
Edit: would recommend spiking up the humidity, keep temp stable maybe place the terrarium somewhere dark and quiet for a few days, she lost a lot of fluid and need to recover from the stress slowly if she gets worse than robc's icu can be an option or if bleeding happen and dont stop than superglue can be viable
Could it possibly be the result of imbreeding? I don’t remember if the communal you had was from the same eggsac but that could be something.
Unfortunately, keeping any pet comes with random, tragic occurences. She definitely is one of the better cared for tarantulas, but sometimes nature does funny things

Honestly shoulda probably covered her up and left her in the dark, although I can’t speak for how your caring for her/ the sac outside of the video but they tend to start acting pretty weird when ya mess with it and keep lights on and likewise interactions around the enclosure in general the decline in condition after the fact is something I wouldn’t be able to speak on though even tho i can take a wild guess in saying she might have fallen while destroying her egg sac leading to an internal injury and now she’s shedding possibly more legs in that scenario after watching her role around it seriously almost seems like she may have the starting symptoms of dks?

I have been a long time fan of this channel but often see things that make me cringe. Today was one of those days. I am a long time keeper (20+ years) and watching you HARRAS this spider after it just lost its leg. Putting it through stress is the last thing you want to do. Leave it alone completely if its hurt. Animals are like humans, if you just lost your leg you dont want someone making you run around pulling your legs and making you do stuff you should not do. This is not a question of you being a good keeper but a basic way of thinking. Your T's are often in way to small enclosures you wait to long to rehouse them and having as many as you do is not a excuse. rather get rid of some of them if you cant keep up. But you want to make videos and have many T's the ending in you neglecting some of them which as a animal lover is not right.
I am sorry but no T lover or animal lover should support this it is animal cruelty and the loss of the 2nd limb could be your fault because of that harassment.

@@snakekidJD First he pulled out the bad egg sack and then waited 5 days to check up and see if she will eat. He then used the straw and was pretty gentle when getting her out of her hide, I wouldn't call it "harassment" She then dropped the other bad leg that he pointed out before. As other comments have pointed out, she probably got sick from eating the bad egg sack. If you think this is bad, then you must hate every other Tarantula youtuber
@@matowakan Using the straw after she had lost her leg is my point. What reason did he have to do it. He was poking her way to much gentle or not all that T wanted was to be left alone.
Yes eating a bad egsac may or may not have caused the leggs to fall off. But that does not excuse him to Harrass her while she is already stressed out.
Maybe just maybe if she was calm and not bothered with extra stress she could have recovered and not lost the extra leg.
He could also have put her in ICU so that he could easily take care of her and inspect her without to much disturbance.
All im saying is what he did was Stupid you want that spider as relaxed as possible and poking her making her move exurting energy and fluids from the legg was not what you should do.

He was literally using a plastic straw to get her out in the open, how did you come to that conclusion? He didn’t grab the tweezers until he went to pick up the second dropped leg.
