When I heard this song for the first time, tears were coming out like raindrops in a storm. My dad showed it to me, and it means more than i can ever tell. Thank you Joe Jackson for your amazing talent, i am so glad that you were brave enough to give it to the world, so it can be judged. I Will love it with all my heart. Inez.
this is a fantastic medley. its not often joe sings hometown slowly like this. imo its way better then the fast version. this guy is is so awesome and without a doubt the best songwriter england has ever produced. unbelieveable how underrated he is. ive loved joe since the late 70's and will be going to see him in concert later this year, cant wait.
Listen to Joe's words. They're something that everyone can relate to unlike the other songwriters you mentioned. Every one of his songs tells a story where its of everyday life and not fictional
This man is godlike in his perfect understanding of melody and pitch.I've seen him 5 times over the years and every incarnation of his talent is better then the last.I rather like when its just Joe on a piano which is why I like this vid so much.
I remember when he opened the Night Music show in San Francisco with this one ( a much better version than in this video). The response at the end was silence... and then a long standing ovation. The man really sings with feeling. Thanks Joe.
I usually pick Hometown every time I'm in a bar with an internet jukebox. But I have never been moved by the song like I am with this version. And Big World (which I still have on its wonderful 3 sided vinyl version) will always be one of my favorites.
Joe Jackson is, and always has been, an incredibly talented composer / musician. I love alot of his earlier works and also the more recent (especially Rain) U R like fine wine, Joe!
I'm Pretty Thankful That I Saw Joe's Jackson First USA Performance April 1979 Asbury Park And He's Raised The Bar With Every Record And Your Since! Plus Some Pretty Much Needed Fashion Tips Too!
Heard this driving home to Portsmouth & like a lightning bolt it hit me, JJ was singing about our hometown. This will live with me forever. Play up Pompey.
I saw Joe tonight at the Keswick Theater in Glenside, PA. He did both of these songs, and was amazing,. he was a real, genuine, humble person...not the guy I remember from1985 who used to yell screw you to the audience when they made requests....it was his show, and he let us know it. We didn't care, we loved to yell back at him. Anyway, it was a great concert tonight. Got to hear some old songs, especially rearranged, and to see Graham Maby on bass, where he should be. Joe, I left you my CD with one of your crew, ,,,,No Time for Hate and Other Songs for Schools. if you want to record a song when you are through the northeast tour, we doing more social activist songs and you would sound great with a kids choir behind you. Peace, Annie Lynn
Even after seeing this live many times and hearing it from CD much many more times never get bored by this song. A great artist. Thank you for this video.
I've been following JJ since 1979 and have pretty much everything he's ever done and seen him a fair few times. I don't like everything he's turned his hand to - but this stuff from the mid-80's is fantastic. To see him at the Hammersmith Odeon playing this stuff in '89 was awesome. Genius.
I do, and you're correct in implying that this is mislabeled. My attempt at the time of titling this was to concisely state that there were 2 songs performed within the entirety of the video.
I love this two songs, especially the solo arrangements and intimate performances of them, but honestly I wish he would vary the songs in his solo performances a bit more - or even better, now that he's with a band again, move in a direction similar to "steppin' out" - a song that Joe has been playing unaccompanied for the past 2 decades. I would LOVE to see "Number Two" erupt into a finale reminiscent of the original. Your thoughts?
The lack of variation made me skip the last tour. He is a great writer, composer and singer but I can't hear "Is she.." and "Different .." in the same live version for the 20nd time :) Wish he did another tour in the Night and Day II setting. That give a lot more oppurtunities like the ending you were talking about. And then play every song that wasn't in the last 5 tours. That will be a long concert every night.
More of an homage I think. I don't think he needs to steal from the classics, he has enough genius to make fantastic compositions. @@francescodalnegro3833

He re‐invents himself constantly, pure genius.
Easily two of his most underrated songs as it's best. Excellent performance.
Joe Jackson is an awfully fine artist. Just wonderful.
two of the most beautiful songs ever written
wish i could like this multiple times

A truly sublime songwriter and performer
I can't get over how talented this guy is !
Brilliant underrated and overlooked artist. His music holds up as well today as when it was released..Well I think so.

What about Lennon/McCartney, Ray Davies, Elton John, David Bowie to name a few.

Best Joe Jackson song ever in my opinion
This is music, so raw und pure, yet also so sublime. I love the expressed emotions.
Iconic
Thank you so much.
Hometown is a special song for me. I don't know why, it just is.
You're still the greatest pianist I 've heard in my life...❤️

ONE OF MOST UNDER RATED AND OR UNDISCOVERED TALENTS OF THE 8O'S AND 9O,S BRAVO JOE

Joe and his piano... What more can you ask for?
Albums used to define our years as they came out. I remember this year by this album. Now...?
totally agree with Warren on this point
so you only buy one album a year then
Joe’s hometown is my hometown. This song engraved on my heart. Forever Portsmouth.
I love this song so much. Thank you Joe for your gift.
this is stuff to fall in love with, Quality, no-one can do this , 'cept , Joe ,at 6'20,,,classic , version ,
I enjoyed Joe immensely. Thanks!

what didnt you like
I saw him that year in Colorado! 💙
Geweldig....Mooiste ooit.....Dankjewel
WOW...Awesome addition to TH-cam.
Nothin' wrong with a little nostalgia!!!
Fabulous Joe! Amazing voice at his age...and he can still play the keyboards a bit aswell !
I love when he busts out the linus piano ..one of the better versions I can find ...good stuff..
Love it...linus piano : ) made my day.
Still in love with Joes world music!!!
First Class Under Rated Musician. Music World Sucks Sometimes. (increasingly)
Beautiful....it sounded even better in Ann Arbor live - if that is possible. So much better than the studio version.
Evolution!!
Maravillosa canción

Fabulous
Second song, Number 2, begins at about 6:21.
Genius
pachabels canon...yes Joe says that...its not a ripoff that he is trying to pull over on people, its something he purposefully did with the chords.
Tu es une sorte de J.S.Bach pop Joe
in concert joe admitted that he stole it from pachelbel, but said he did it unknowingly
The lack of variation made me skip the last tour. He is a great writer, composer and singer but I can't hear "Is she.." and "Different .." in the same live version for the 20nd time :)

Yep.
If anyone has the chops to do some brilliant rearranging it's Joe. Not sure why he's so rigid when touring.
I can't believe the morons who down voted this musical prodigy. Haha. Tone deaf, they are. 💙
All the the stupid. i start to believe. A strong love affair, but not gay, more than a folks love affair. Joe, you are our One-World-Embassador!!
Deal ,for me
good performance, though the albumversion is much more vulnerable and thus more moving, in my opinion.
the pianopart is imho stolen from johann pachelbel - canon.
still a great song!
I agree

a very poignant homage to Portsmouth......
"Hometown/Number Two Medley"
You know what a medley is? Ok, obviously you do not.
Okay song, but a total rip off of Pachebel's Canon in D.
Superb ta Joe for thts great song keep them comlng
Homage not rip off 😮
