- The Catholic Church has renewed a deal it made two years ago with China - which is an officially atheist Communist state - concerning bishops there. The agreement now gives the Pope the final say over the appointment of them. But Beijing is the one who gets to come up with the choices. Chinese authorities had previously selected bishops without the say of the Vatican. And a division formed between state-sanctioned clergy -- and underground bishops who operated outside state control. The former bishop of Hong Kong, Cardinal Joseph Zen, has spoken up about this. A pro-democrat, he has expressed concern over the Church's engagement with China. DW's Joyce Lee interviewed Cardinal Zen.

At the same time people are people and in GENERAL ... have the ability to act in good manner. Don't know about the sect thing. @@TheRomanCatholicChurch You have to openly proclaim wrong ideas to become an apostate. So, he is not. It's the same as I would say that we had had some good communist who had fought for democracy in 60th in my country and were silenced by the bad communist from other country.
I'm not much convinced by these theories about secret sects especially in the age of conspirations but I found pretty alarming that pope Francis has been negotiating and made deal with Chinese communist party.

So, I think it is quite unfair to put words or intentions in his mouth and call him apostate. Btw: The situation in South Amercia is much more chaotic in comparison to our societies where you can discern good from bad.

These days Bishops and Cardinals are easily bought by their political masters. These religious leaders have moved away from serving Jesus and the flock. They only serve their political masters who give them more money and power.

The Eastern Catholics in Ukraine, Slovakia etc which endured Soviet and the Russian Orthodox Church oppression had similar fate with the Vatican's response, a sort of politicking to either let the Church die out or put it more at risk. But we know now the results of that move.

Beyond heartbreaking. Cardinal Zen is a saint and all those being persecuted in China. Mike Pompeo went to Rome to meet with the pope but the pope refused him as he did precious Cardinal Zen. So sad. Pro Memoria: the Holy Sea had a similar agreement with the former Warsaw Pact countries: the Commies had to approve from a roster of names for the bishoprics, submitted by the Vatican. The Poles even outraged this: they chose for the sea of Cracow, one who wasn't even on the Vatican's list, a certain Karol Wojtyla. The rest, of course, is history! The Chinese think they can browbeat the house of God, not knowing that their battle is not with flesh & blood, but with the Holy Spirit himself!

Well, the Catholic Church has been around a long time, and has had to cut deals with a lot of political regimes. I should point out most of these regimes are now found only in history books. The Church is still here. Such arrangements for nomination of bishops were common place in Europe at one point or the other. Things move back and forth. The Church has to endure.
Is God not enough to sustain the Catholic Church? Deals like this (like the one with musolini which created the the Holy See in the first place) do not protect the Catholic Church. Rather, they hamstring the Catholic Church’s capacity to truly help those who need it most.
So millions should die because the church doesn't want to stand up to bullies! The church is not enduring. The church is dying because of its compromises!

At this point it is not only probable but likeky that the Catholic Church in China will be wasted space puppet for the CCP that actually turns social dissidents over to the government (based on who the CCP would actually allow to be bishops in the first place) but that the agreement itself might silence the Catholic Church on China’s human rights abuses.
