  • In Santu Lussurgiu an equestrian carnival is held, characterized by a horseback race, one of the most daring of the island, called "Sa Carrela‘ e Nanti "(the road in front).
The equestrian traditions, such as "Sa Carrela 'e Nanti", are very ancient, dating back to the past centuries when, first the Judges of Arborea and the Spanish viceroys, had implanted and favored the breeding of horses, so as to obtain special breeds for the racing. A certain reference is found in the "Historical statistical commercial geographic dictionary of the States of S.M. the King of Sardinia "by Goffredo Casalis and Vittorio Angius (Turin, 1833-1856) who speaks of" sa carrela "starting from 1840.
In the two-part races, which are currently held for the carnival in Santu Lussurgiu, the knights must be true acrobats as they impose the rules of this kind of event that has origins in the exercises and traditions of light cavalry.
Sa Carrela ‘e Nanti is the synthesis of the Santu Lussurgiu carnival featuring knights, horses and the public. The crowd is also an integral part of the event, creating a particular effect: the thick mass opens up a moment before the arrival of the running horses to close again immediately after their passage.
Sa Carrela "e Nanti (the current Via Roma) is a dirt road about 350 meters long downhill.
Knights, strictly Luxurgese, must wear, according to tradition, a mask or have a painted face.
The event takes place over three days. On carnival Sunday, the riders come to s'iscappadorzu, the point at which the race begins, and to "pareza" (pair) the riders launch themselves at full speed with the aim of descending the whole race "together", with the arm of one on the other's arm, as if to symbolize unity, harmony, friendship and solidarity.
In ancient times it went down to parishes of three and sometimes four riders.
On Monday, called "Su Lunisi de sa pudda" (hen's Monday), the galloping knight must throw a puppet on the ground, called "su fuste 'e ortzastru", which looks like a hen, which replaces the true hen from the 70s.
On Tuesday the show ends with the awarding of the knights who have thrown down more chickens, the three best pairs and all the other participants.
Sa Carrela "and Nanti represents a unique moment of authentic recognition of the local community, it is an opportunity for exchange, mutual knowledge, a unique opportunity to bring visitors closer to the history of the community and its deepest soul.
Sa Carrela "and Nanti fulfills the desire to live an authentic experience, embodies a very strong charm and represents the journey of fantasy, lightness, transgression.
