    My small rucksack was in fact virtually empty, and I could have managed quite well without it. I incline to the view, never before expressed, that a rucksack is not at all necessary on a walking tour. How some can enjoy themselves beneath the weight of their huge, fifty-pound burdens completely passes my comprehension.
    I have had expeditions in the Lake District without a pack, and gone short of nothing. I take a light raincoat or a cape, always; but never a change of clothes, nor an extra shirt, nor pyjamas. The clothes I wear when I set off must suffice: if they get wet, it is unfortunate for walking in wet raiment is unpleasant, but they have never failed to get dry afterwards. Pyjamas are, of course, a nuisance at all times and have no saving grace. A pair of slippers is a comfort, and additional socks are essential, but these will slip easily into a pocket.

    Decided to go a walk with my friend today at the pentlands. Being a complete novice I stupidly made a massive mistake only wearing jeans trainers and what I thought was a waterproof jacket. Needless to say it was a disaster the heavens opened and I got drenched also slipped a few times due to poor footware. Very lucky I didn't get hypothermia which I would have got if I didn't get out quicker I was completely drenched and had to complete journey in just a t shirt as was only thing that was barley dry.

    Where do you normally shop to get your gear? I've recently bought some things from Mountain Warehouse but it doesn't look like they're going to arrive and I really want to try out some hiking

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I shop in various places; Tiso, Cotswold and GoOutdoors. Online shopping Webtogs, OutdoorGB, Decathlon and Ultralightoutdoorgear to name a few.
      I'd avoid Mountain Warehouse if possible, it's the cheaper end of the scale and their stuff doesn't last long.

      Definitely want a good waterproof jacket and over trousers that are Goretex lined. Make sure your spare clothes and electronics in your pack are in a waterproof dry sack.
      Gaiters help prevent water getting in over your ankle too.
      Dry clothes in the car to get changed into are a bonus too. 👌🏼

    Super video Robin. Loads of good ideas. A question. What were those non cotton boxers specifically. Are they Nylon? It was a good point you made about quick drying gear then wearing cotton. I was on a long hike recently and my cotton boxers were obviously sweaty. Any way, good going. Mark

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mark. The boxers are predominantly polyester with some elastane. They are fitted and work really well. Merino boxers are obviously better for keeping odours down, but I only got 1 season out of a £30 pair of pants before a hole appeared, so never again.

    Did you buy the new version of the Firefly rain shell? What do you think of it? I’m planning on doing part of the CWT hopefully next summer, and am trying to figure out which rain shell to use. I have an Arc’teryx Beta - but it’s kind of heavy (and it’s old so it wets out), and a Marmot Precip, which is great for day hikes, but not sure it’s beefy enough for the western highlands. Would love to know your thoughts on this.

      Hey Amie, I've had the Firefly for a good few years now, so it must be the older version, in fact I thought it was discontinued. It's served me well. Not got much knowledge of the Marmot jacket to be honest, but it does look a bit light weight for the rigours of the CWT. 🤔
