I don't look at her life as pain filled. I look at her as one of those song writers that write when they are heartbroken more often than not. But I don't think she has a pain filled existence.
I opened my eyes While you were kissing me once more than once And you looked as sincere as a dog Just as sincere as a dog does, When it's the food on your lips with which it's in love I bet you could never tell That I knew you didn't know me that well It is my fault you see You never learned that much from me Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine You were always good for a rhyme And from the first, to the last time, the signs Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started They said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started I took off my glasses While you were yelling at me once more than once So as not to see you see me react Should've put 'em, should've put 'em on again So I could see you see me sincerely yelling back I bet your fortressed face Belied your fort of lace It is by the grace of me You never learned what I could see Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine You were always good for a rhyme And from the first to all the last times, all the signs Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started They said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted It ended bad, but I love what we started
+Troy Anderson The fact that not every single person on earth responds immediately to the question of who is your favorite artist with Fiona Apple means she is the most under rated artist of all time.
Taylor Swift released two "indie" albums last year 2020 - the worst year in the 21s century and it's getting excellent reviews and it has like a Fiona Apple-esque vibe to it. Let's hope Taylor goes the same way as Fiona
She's got that rare ability to express emotion like nobody else. No matter where you are or who you are, when this song comes on you feel what Fiona was feeling.
She thinks about every word she writes. And then she feels every word she wrote. No one does that in popular music anymore. Not many artists have done that period. There's either too much thinking and not enough feels or a lot of feeling but not enough thought. She's mastered both.
so Def in my basement balling my eyes out. when my boyfriend died I used to sing this and the cat we had together would always come lay on me. I think he liked to hear me sing it so when I was sad we lay together and I'd sing it. anyway I had to put my cat down about a year ago . I haven't sang the song since .my hands are shaking typing this . shit. I miss them both. it ended bad but I love what we started.thankyou fiona
I feel like her music speaks to the highly intelligent and deeply but quietly emotional ppl of the world. There's just always been something just so about her music that I imagine flies past the grunts and plebs lol.
"I bet you could never tell that I knew you didn't know me that well It is my fault you see, you never learned that much from me" It's such beautiful writing.
There are no words to properly express my love for her music. I seriously feel it flowing through my whole body. Overwhelming surges of emotion where I don't know whether to laugh or cry, and sometimes I find my self doing both. I get adrenaline rushes when she hits certain notes with such passion, and when the music has certain transitions. It's always a constant series of goosebumps. Nobody else I've found can affect me in this way. I wish I could explain it better. It's really intense.
She’s one of the most talented musical artists ever … great prose, great music, fantastically performed. A true talent! She hooked me and I’m stuck. Can’t get enough. Listen to her for hours. Never gets old. Her passion is painful and it’s visceral … goes to my core … paints it on my soul like Picasso.
I have listened to this song so many times before today, but for some reason today it just leapt right out at me.... THIS is why we love Fiona Apple. It doesn't matter how old a song is or how many you've heard it, you can still always find something new in art.
Wow!!! This song hurts me sooo bad every time I hear it, that I can't control the fountain of tears flowing down my face. She is just such an amazing artist; 'Love her to pieces!!!!
Completely timeless this takes me back to 1920's or maybe even 1740's so good but takes it to 2100 modern progression. Takes the carnival and then the voice melts my heart. Thank for being you! The world is a better place!
listening to this on Valentine's day is some sort time capsule experience. so many mixed feelings hearing her sing those words with those chords. it's like heartache on tap.
Dear Fiona, I'll be 25 by the end of next month and all I want is to see you in concert. I'm in the army so I can't get up and go when I feel like it but I'm your #1 fan and it would be super cool to get to meet your and pick apart your beautiful thoughts and talk song lyrics with you. I'm done being creepy lol but it's worth a shot :)
it took me several listens to really appreciate this song, but now i think it is one of the most interesting pieces of song-writing i have ever heard..
from the first to the last time, The signs said stop. But we went on wholehearted, it ended bad, But I love what we started. I took off my glasses while you were yelling at me once, more than once, so as not to see you see me react Should've put em, should've put em on again So I could see you see me... Sincerely yelling back.
I put this on repeat for 7 hours today. It needs a final verse , then this would be my favorite Fiona Apple song of all time, nothing can beat it, for me personally, I feel like it's missing an ending, one which I believe in my heart that she wrote, she just didn't add it. Please write another verse for this and take it home. I believe in you and I know you can do it. I'm sure all of your fans would love it. It will stay on repeat until tomorrow, I'm going to cover this. But I'll always wonder where it was finally going in the message. Please at least read this and consider it. TY, much love, fan until I die.
@@laurenmartinmccraw245 I posted that 3 years ago, didn't think it would ever get a response. Fiona for me is like my parents loving Dolly. Without her and the grunge movement I wouldn't have made it. I value your opinion after all its just a song but that's a haunting end. I just wish she had put 1 more verse on it because that's a minute and a half se could have heard her sing.
I love the comments on Fiona videos - her fans are the best! I saw her perform and the venue didn't sell all that great, they moved all of us to the front at her request.
I rank this as my favorite song ever... Just perfect in every possible way. I'm learning to play it right now but can't stop getting distracted by just listening to it.
I'll keep dreaming of the day that Edward Severson III, sits down with Maggie Margaret and sings a duet about love and happiness. Two of the greatest voices of all time. It most likely won't happen in my lifetime, but it would be awesome., I'll just keep dreaming of what it would sound like.
Nia Radford I agree with it alll 😧I'm sorry though could never stand Alanis ? Just hate Canadian accents lol I never missed a Fiona show.🦄she is my unicorn
what a wonderful songwriter.i think fiona is completely underrated.she has one of the most unique and original voices iv'e ever heard.she is in my top ten favorite artists.she should get more credit than she does.not to mention, she's fockin gorgeous.i will always love your work fiona.you are such a talent, more ppl need to take note of it.
I love her genius I hate that I know it comes from such pain.
Mental
plus she was raped.
At TWELVE!
I don't look at her life as pain filled. I look at her as one of those song writers that write when they are heartbroken more often than not. But I don't think she has a pain filled existence.
Isn't it ironic that greatest art born from such ugly life disasters?
This is therapy right now.
Yes it is!
Jeremy Watson yes it is
Fiona is therapy ALWAYS!!!!
I'm your 100th 'YUP'
I listen self care.
She said this song was a love letter to all her old flames but this seems so personal, so intensely focused on one love .
It’s always personal baby
I opened my eyes
While you were kissing me once more than once
And you looked as sincere as a dog
Just as sincere as a dog does,
When it's the food on your lips with which it's in love
I bet you could never tell
That I knew you didn't know me that well
It is my fault you see
You never learned that much from me
Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine
You were always good for a rhyme
And from the first, to the last time, the signs
Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started
They said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started
I took off my glasses
While you were yelling at me once more than once
So as not to see you see me react
Should've put 'em, should've put 'em on again
So I could see you see me sincerely yelling back
I bet your fortressed face
Belied your fort of lace
It is by the grace of me
You never learned what I could see
Oh you silly stupid pastime of mine
You were always good for a rhyme
And from the first to all the last times, all the signs
Said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started
They said 'Stop' - but we went on whole-hearted
It ended bad, but I love what we started
Awesome of you 😀 much gratitude!
Omg that was my favorite part of the song!
Fiona is one of the most under rated artists of all time by far, love you girl!
+Troy Anderson in as much as she doesn't sell as many records as Taylor Swift. She's pretty well rated by critics and those who know better.
+Troy Anderson The fact that not every single person on earth responds immediately to the question of who is your favorite artist with Fiona Apple means she is the most under rated artist of all time.
She has changed the music industry, a lot of singer are inspired by her
Truer words there may not be

There isn't anyone whose facial expressions are as angrily beautiful as Fiona. Her gazes PIERCE and there has been nothing like it to walk the earth.
the other lady, Sinead O"Connor, fills those shoes.. My other Love.
No
wouldn’t want her angry at u or me tho
She is such a exquisite song writer, her songs make me contemplate, you don't hear that enough.
Nathan Spencer well said, she's a thinker's song writer for sure
Pretty much her lyrics describes people's thoughts and experiences. She is awesome!
Agree
@@elagace03 Thats one of the draws of her songs, it makes you stop and really listen and think about her words beyond the surface layer.
I have loved Fiona Apple's music since her first album, Tidal, to present. I am in awe of her musical genius, lyrics, and voice.
She's got that rare ability to express emotion like nobody else. No matter where you are or who you are, when this song comes on you feel what Fiona was feeling.

what about beyonce?
@@amgm1996 While beyonce writes very good pop tunes, in my opinion, there isn't as much depth in her lyrics as there is in Fiona's.
I agree that FA's lyrics and art of performing are astoundingly great; but I think the best thing about her work is the musical composition.
@@amgm1996You’re kidding me, right??😆😂🤣

Hope you're doing better, stranger friend. Much love from over here.
Everyone brings me joy. Some when they come into my life. Some when they exit. A minor key. I like prospecting.
She has a style all her own, with talent unmatched. She’s also one the most beautiful women that I’ve ever seen!
you complete and utter legend.
Brilliance.
that gaze at 2:15 pierces the soul
yeah it kinda freaked me out
IKR She did it till the chorus but they changed cameras smh
she is one of the best lyricists ever, not to mention a brilliant pianist. She is perfect!
she ranks along with the best
Her smile at the end is absolutely everything.
this song brings me some kind of comfort through the heartbreak I’m dealing right now. fiona just knows how to write feelings.
I hope you feel better now

How it feels to need reality testing and have it be treated as addiction.
I am going to say the most intiment song from a crushingly honest artist.
It is by the grace of me...
Disappointed (let's say) Kantians point precision missiles at the heart, when the missiles are in the air, have a moment of emotional reprieve.
I'm so in love with her writing since my teen years. Until now. God I love this woman.
man, this is maybe one of my favorite fiona songs.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I CANT BELIEVE I NEVER HEARD HER TILL LAST NIGHT! I AM NOW A FAN!
only fiona is able to put into words what i'm feeling in an exact moment...she's perfect. i just love'er so much.

This is such a devastatingly beautiful song. Love it.
She ended her EM tour with this song in an amphitheater and it was the most bone chilling experience
