Unfortunately it was not simple as that. Many of the generals were against the idea of fraternity as it was feared it would prevent men from fighting and Britain had no choice but to keep fighting as they promised to protect Belgium and before the war Germany tried to overtake Britain by creating a bigger navy and having more industries.
I truly wish that the soldiers had turned on the generals ordering them to stop the ceasefire, and fighting instead to put up a permanent truce with each other, talking through complications caused by the war.
rstein926 Yeah but there’s also a consciousness that could arise say after a whole day of general ceasefire. A namely example being, “You’re German I’m British. Why am I shooting at you in the middle of France and Belgium because some Serb shot an Austrian prince.” I feel like that would be a commonly adopted sentiment and the whole thing would be over. A few generals or even a government are nothing without their troops. And if the majority don’t want to fight then you can’t do anything to stop them.
rstein926 Yes but Germany( a relatively new country compared to others) wanted over seas colonies like France, England, and others had. The only way to protect these colonies and to project power ( like America's great white fleet) was a large navy.

They called an armistice to clear bodies and ended up shaking hands, exchanging cigarettes, photos, etc. These stories are well known in New Zealand and Turkey.
Harry Wakatipu you guys had seen all the good action, while us Americans had to worry about some Mexican bandits, but I can understand that it wasn't our war yet.
Harry Wakatipu you got to drive tanks, fly in the sky, and get some humanity in war, when we just get less than a year to understand. Britain never had much of a choice. They had the largest Navy at the time and they feared Germany were trying to overtake them. Furthermore the Germans attacked Belgium and the British promised since 1839 they would step in and fight.
The story of the 1914 Christmas Truce will never fail to bring tears to my eyes. The last gleaming light of decency and human kindness in one of the world's darkest times. World War I truly was the first, the last, and the only "decent" war. Bless all of those men.
The use of gas and the conditions of the trenches were horrible, but the humanity and respect for life exhibited by those on the ground: the soldiers, were incredible. In fact, the truces were not spontaneous pacifism at all; many trenches had decided to adopt a live-and-let-live attitude towards each other, firing only when mandated and usually to no effect; sometimes they'd even trade tabacco! The point is that even if the forces of the world made the war horrible, the soldiers did every thing they could to preserve their humanity and respect for life. I think that's what Tasy meant when he called it a decent war.
I doubt people choking on chemical weapons, shitting in trenches, and running headlong into machine guns and artillery would agree with your statement. Anyone that suggests WW1 was "decent" is ridiculously misinformed.
DeathByBlunderbuss really it is. These are your enemies and you stand up randomly and walk over to them, and they follow suite. That is quite a risk, and it was possibly the saddest moment in military history. Damn old men, thinking all your enemies are the bad guys, when most of them have other reasons for their service. If I met any of those officers who order their own to be shot, I'd tell to hold a court martial, and I would kick their shit for being uncivilized and unhuman.
+Jacob Furrow it has been tried several times after but superior officers stopped it, though france and germany were lucky to share similar religious beliefs of christmas to have peace for awhile.
its cause its no longer warfare between professional military and a war of attrition, a war against. terrorists who disguises with civilians and use fear
Correct, high commands on both sides were worried that their soldiers could just show them the smelly finger and keep fraternize with the enemy and just go back home to their families. May they rot in hell forever
WW1 was actually a very "polite" war, people did many similar things to this. after running out of ammo or fuel fighter pilots from different sides would often land and talk to eachother. At the end of the war everyone got out and shook eachother's hands. Some pilots even gave wreaths to fallen enemies' families. Unfortunately, war might never have that amount if respect for the opposing side ever again.
+Jacob Furrow i wouldnt consider it a "polite" war. after they started using mustard gases and trench bombings it became very deadly very quickly. however, in the starting of the war most trenches didnt see any action. very rare to take over an enemy trench in the starting
I didn't say it was a very humane war, if you stepped out of your trench you'd get sawed in half by machine guns. It was one of the bloodiest wars ever, it was miserable. BUT the individuals were respectful and understanding of eachother, it was mainly the politicians who were filled with hate.
Jacob Furrow thats with all wars. most people dont want to fight. sure, they want to serve their country but they dont want to brutally kill other humans that have never wronged them.
One of the single most beautiful moments in humanity. No force could stop these men from coming together and celebrating a common holiday. It's absolutely amazing.

I saw this movie in 1970 as a college girl...there's no blood in it. It's a masterpiece of ironical contrast and lovely music...the emotional tension is so overwhelming I threw up all night! I'll never forget it. Please don't miss this. But like "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" you won't be the same...a religious experience.
This was a very touching video of World War 1 with the soldiers. Instead of them fighting, they sang Silent Night Holy Night to make them commemorate their loved ones.
Ive wanted to tell this story in Hollywood for a long time. Sadly this won't generate $400,000,000 in profit for the studios, but ill keep trying. Studios are not the only ones making movies these days.

I really found this touching because both factions just wanted to celebrate one of the longest and well-kept traditions and they know that a war isn't something that should hinder them of sharing even a brief moment of companionship.
My Grandfather was in France during WWI, in the trenches. A similar event actually happened where he was at although they didn't actually go out and meet in the middle of "No Man's Land" each side took turns singing Christmas carols that Christmas eve102 years ago.

1915 on Christmas Day On the Western Front, the guns all died away And lying in the mud on bags of sand We heard a German sing from No-Man's-Land He had a tenor voice so pure and true The words were strange but every note we knew Soaring over the living, dead, and damned The German sang of peace from No-Man's-Land They left their trenches, and we left ours Beneath tin hats, the smiles bloomed like wildflowers With photos, cigarettes, and pots of wine We built a soldiers' truce on the frontline Their singer was a lad of twenty-one We begged another song before the dawn And sitting in the mud and blood and fear He sang again the song all longed to hear "Stille nacht", no cannon's roar Our King is born to peace forever more All's calm, all's bright, all brothers hand in hand In 1915 in No-Man's-Land And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain And we killed them and they killed us again At night they charged, we fought them hand to hand And I killed the boy that sang in No-Man's-Land In 1915 in No-Man's-Land
My Grandfather, John Patience was with the Seaforth Highlanders fighting in the Somme. He survived but never told me about the War. I found out when I was about 16 years old when my Grandmother and my Mum came to visit me on my 16th birthday at Fort George, Scotland (I was a Junior Soldier then, in the Queens Own Highlanders).
According to the Gordon Highlander museum in Aberdeen, my Great-grandad George Alexander Strachan (1890-1982), 2nd Batt Gordons, 20th Bge, (British) 7th Division, (who died when I was 8), was one of the 100,000 British and German troops who took part in the most famous Christmas truce in history
Thank you. I have to tell you a story about my grandfather who was a soldier in WWI in the horrible battle of Verdun. My grandfather spoke fluent French. He told us (grandchildren) while a ceasefire German and French soldiers left their trenches and shakes hands, smoke a cigarette. After that the ceasefire was over they shaked again hands and wished good luck. My grandfather and a French soldier exchanged their addresses. Luckely in the late fifties the French soldier came to Germany to visit my grandfather. My grandfather kept always telling us this experience to show how absurd and divergent a war is. I still have a great friendship with the grandchildren of those French soldier. We see us once or twice a year and it is always a pleasure when they are coming home to their German home or we go to our French home. All the best to the French Grand Nation and the people.
If that was me about to get out of the trench to walk towards the enemys I would definitely not go first. If this was how the Christmas truce really happened then I am amazed how they went back to their trenchs the next day and started shooting again.
This is an incredibly moving piece of film, what is more remarkable that it is actually based on real life events. Imagine if the soldiers had chosen to turn on there officers as happened in Russia and just gone home would n't that have been amazing
i just sat here and cried. to think of such a gesture. it only goes to show, that LOVE conquers evil, and there can be peace on earth--if we truly strive for it. i pray, that -soon- everyone will lay down their weapons of hatred , jealousy, and selfishness--and replace them with love, patience and tolerance, for one another. To everyone--Merry Christmas!

There’s a saying “Never trust an old man in a profession where young men die” I think this a truth in every war. War rarely just between men and almost always between nations.
i am still watching again and again...i sheed my tears ...man,this is for real?yeah...it's real...christmas spirit make feel comfort anybody in anger...peace be unto you, like jesus said to His apostle and us...
The Christmas truce is the prime example and reminder that no matter who you are, what nation or religion you come from, we are all human. The fact that on Christmas, a festive day, the troops not only acknowledged it but took the opportunity to take a risk and share the day with their enemy reveals so much about humanity. On this day the soldiers put their differences aside and proved that peace is possible. If we take the chance we learn that we have more in common with people than we think.
I dont think moment like that happens any longer in wars. 😔 I also gave seem an old movie clip from a Gettysburg reunion in the late 30ths. Veterans from both sides shook hands and embracef each other..
very touching.put a tear in my eye..good men killing good men for reasons not known to them. but, at the end of the day, the beguiled, uncertain and emotionally wrung man will identify with his supposed "enemy". in our hearts, we just want to get along. but as soldiers (pawns) in a grand game of chess..we are easily played. and very expendable.
Knowing that there is God helps me to not give in to satans thoughts for me which is to sacrifice my family and murder people. I didn't not acknowledge God yet but his Love is beyond describing. It's more than unconditional by what I experienced so far. Draw close to him and make your own experiences. We as humanity are able to feed all of mankind. Just share and don't eat meat and don't drink milk and such. It requires so much resources. Albert pike planned on three world wars. Before the third he wants Hans to bece atheits. For believe in God makes people loving and merciful. If you are not able to use your brain then use your heart. Scientist who get deep into the laws of this existence know that there is God. Most won't tell you tho.
History books also state that in 1917, after the news broke in the trenches that the armistice had been signed, soldiers from both sides got out of the trenches and cheered. They ran towards each other and embraced in No Man's Land, glad that they didn't have to kill each other anymore. Simply shows that in a real war, there are no winners. I guess what's truly terrifying about this Christmas truce is that after Christmas they had to go back to killing each other.
It was at this moment both sides realised "Why are we fighting? Just because some guy in Sarajevo gets murdered and the other countries see it as an excuse for war?"
would have been great if the war ended right when this happened
Unfortunately it was not simple as that. Many of the generals were against the idea of fraternity as it was feared it would prevent men from fighting and Britain had no choice but to keep fighting as they promised to protect Belgium and before the war Germany tried to overtake Britain by creating a bigger navy and having more industries.

They left their trenches, and we left ours
Beneath tin hats, the smiles bloomed like wildflowers
With photos, cigarettes, and pots of wine
We built a soldiers' truce on the frontline
Their singer was a lad of twenty-one
We begged another song before the dawn
And sitting in the mud and blood and fear
He sang again the song all longed to hear
"Stille nacht", no cannon's roar
Our King is born to peace forever more
All's calm, all's bright, all brothers hand in hand
In 1915 in No-Man's-Land
And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
And we killed them and they killed us again
At night they charged, we fought them hand to hand
And I killed the boy that sang in No-Man's-Land
In 1915 in No-Man's-Land
1 it happened in 1914
2 they didn't attack eachother the next day it was peaceful up until they were swapped
I just want to say, men have very, VERY high pitched voices for those songs.
Jeez! That brought a lump to my throat when I saw the first German
That's such a touching scene. Wow.
2:09 one of the most beautiful shots ive ever seen in cinema
Thank you recommendation. For bring me to the old souls who’s been here for a long time. And for the lovely video.
There are brave moments in the history of war...this was probably by far the bravest...
Merry Christmas Germany !
From france.
😂 + 😪 = 👍🏼✌🏼
“The historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence”
― T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets
That's beautiful it wants to make me cry
Thank you for adding this video to share. I share it will my junior high students every year at Christmas.
Great film and this is one of its most memorable scenes,
Buetiful act during a horrible time.#RESPECT
This has to be the most saddest yet, wholesome thing to see.
I wish this movie had been available to watch back when it came out in 1969.
happy christmas fritz happy christmas tommy
This would never happen now. :(
Happy Christmas in advance!
Isaac Reed never say never. If anything, we are more likely to do it than they did in ww1
This is an incredibly moving piece of film, what is more remarkable that it is actually based on real life events. Imagine if the soldiers had chosen to turn on there officers as happened in Russia and just gone home would n't that have been amazing
Why would they have turned on their officers?
Peace and love emerge for a brief moment amidst the sheer awfulness of war.
Those soliders , show us than mankind can be on peace ...forever
This is one of the most beautiful times in history
i just sat here and cried. to think of such a gesture. it only goes to show, that LOVE conquers evil, and there can be peace on earth--if we truly strive for it. i pray, that -soon- everyone will lay down their weapons of hatred , jealousy, and selfishness--and replace them with love, patience and tolerance, for one another. To everyone--Merry Christmas!
Bellissimo......STRACOMMOVENTE........😢😢😢😢😢LA GUERRA È SEMPRE STATA FATTA DA POCHISSIME PERSONE CHE SI CONOSCO FIN TROPPO BENE 😢😢😢😢........E COMBATTUTA DA MILIONI DI PERSONE CHE NON SI CONOSCONO PER NULLA😢😢😢😢😢
Was für ein geiler Trailer...
Da kann einem das Herz erweichen...
So, nur so kann es gewesen sein..
Merry Christmas.
The Day in history we will never forget
"Hello Tommy." Truly moving.
I dont think moment like that happens any longer in wars. 😔 I also gave seem an old movie clip from a Gettysburg reunion in the late 30ths. Veterans from both sides shook hands and embracef each other..
This is very beautiful! :')
Beautiful video.
I think both sides advanced more in one christmas of peace than in the next 4 years of war.
very touching.put a tear in my eye..good men killing good men for reasons not known to them. but, at the end of the day, the beguiled, uncertain and emotionally wrung man will identify with his supposed "enemy".
in our hearts, we just want to get along. but as soldiers (pawns) in a grand game of chess..we are easily played.
and very expendable.
I heard many years ago from an old man that Angelic forms actually appeared in the heavens above them.
Been drinking, had he?
The best christmas i have ever seen
It,s make me crying
When the Christmas spirit win any war out there all the people come together like one ..
.
Nádherné video.....toto video má dušu . Thanks for sharing , friends.
Lovely just lovely.I love it when 2 nations who are at war meet togeather as 1 to end all this sufering and have 1 moment of peace
Petion to have this as a chirstmas ad
If only the war really did stop at this.
If only "The War to end all wars" truly would end all wars.
2:10 what a beautiful scene. its just looks like how it must have happened. makes you travel on time. i must watch this movie.
This just makes me think, wow, how powerful is my Lord Christ to bring peace in hate. Here, even with this holiday, you can see the power of the Lord.
@Dracul If people want to be believe in god they can. It’s not your job to tell them they can’t.
He wants humans to become atheists*
The world needs something like this today.
This made be cry due to the fact my great grandfather was in that war
...An amazing moment 100 years ago.
man, those german trenches have an amazing soprano section.
Filmed opposite my house watching this in bed looking out of window at location
" The blessed are the pacemakers: for they are called the children of God"
wow, what an example to us all, no matter what nationality you are or country you come from. From a German Canadian ......
This is a true moment of humanity
History books also state that in 1917, after the news broke in the trenches that the armistice had been signed, soldiers from both sides got out of the trenches and cheered. They ran towards each other and embraced in No Man's Land, glad that they didn't have to kill each other anymore. Simply shows that in a real war, there are no winners.
I guess what's truly terrifying about this Christmas truce is that after Christmas they had to go back to killing each other.
It was at this moment both sides realised "Why are we fighting? Just because some guy in Sarajevo gets murdered and the other countries see it as an excuse for war?"
to think, that two forces that absolutely hate each other, have the will to call a truce for Christmas, amazing.
