Doing the exercises with you my neck kept popping and cracking a bit.... the price of eight decades, I'm sure. But great advice as I go on another cross-continent ride in a few weeks.
Yeah. Kinda like rolling a bag of walnuts :) My chiropractor suggested a version of these exercises as well. He also suggested doing them in the shower with warm water hitting the back of one's neck. Works!
I have arthritis in my neck I think these exercises will help. I ride a naked bike, unfortunately it is too easy to hang on with a death grip at speed. Thanks Kevin.
Motorcycle dealerships should give a free subscription for MCrider when you buy a motorcycle because the advice and training found here makes it safer and more enjoyable to ride. Happy motorcycle riders will keep returning to the dealership and MCrider. Love these exercises. Thank you.
Just tried the exercises, worked great but my wife thought I was eating Rice Crispy cereal , all she heard was snap, crackle and pop! Thanks for the video
I’m in the middle of a 3,000 mile ride through the Southwest 🌞back to my home town in the Northwest☔️. Great tips. I performed all the neck exercises for 60 seconds, I’m ready to tackle the remaining 1500 miles! 👍
I remember my very first proper motorcycle trip. I'm used to riding smaller windier roads, but then I had to ride several hundred km on a highway, the first day. Fenced off straight road. Just staring at the traffic ahead. When I had to turn my head, because the road ended with an intersection, I suddenly had sparks in front of my eyes from the pain my neck caused. Never thought something so flexible like neck, could get so stiff with just few hours of not moving. I stopped and did that looking left and right motion and rolled my head around and moved my shoulders and all that helped in just a little while, but made me very cautious and I kept looking left and right with my head, instead of my eyes, the whole trip.
Learning to be loose totally changed my riding. I soon found I could change lanes just using my knees or putting more weight on the peg in the direction I want.
I am ( sort of) a new rider. I rode a lot in the late 70s & early 80s. I went all this time without a motorcycle. Just six months ago I got a bike. A 2004 Honda Shadow 750. I thought I would just hop on and continue like a prow. LOL @ myself about thinking that! I dropped it on the second day. Too much front brake. Rucky mistake. I know. Now I am learning all over again. Thank you so very much for your help. Your channel has been a refresher course from heaven. Why I haven't subscribed until now, I do not know.
Gr8 vid, kevin. Riding a m/c is a sport; and as in any sport, muscle control and recovery is very important. Preparing and proper training of the body goes a long way to further success and enjoyment of any sport. Anyway, ride safe, god bless u.
Thanks. Good reminder. I like to do few exercizes on red light when I'm sure there is no danger from behind. Even during ride on long flat stretches that we have plenty of in Texas.
I have a chronic tight neck that restricts my range of motion to the right. When you cannot turn your head far enough I find it limits ones ability to properly execute tight U turns. I actually have to change my seating position in order to get my eyes far enough in the direction I want to turn. A loose neck and shoulders certainly facilitates slow speed U turns.
My first ride I had such a death grip on the handlebars I actually broke the glue loose on the left hand grip and it came right off in my hand. (Luckily I was already home at that point!) A few rides later and a lot of conscious effort I'm getting better at relaxing (and riding). Thanks for these! I'm sure they'll help!
Thanks Kevin, great training as always! I have a suggestion/request for training....."Tips for the 2-up rider". I recently had someone ride behind me who hadn't ridden much and WOW.... a somewhat alarming experience....I finally asked them to lean with me and it helped some but I felt like the whole ride was a struggle to ride smoothly.
An exercise you might want to before doing yours is stand in a corner of a room. Put your hands head high on each wall. Push your body into the corner and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat for a total of 5 times. It's a great stretch to set up your exercises.
Great video. I use similar exercises called "Isometrics". I use my hands for resistance when doing some of these exercises to stregnthen my neck muscles. Helps to have a strong neck in case of accidents.
Great video MC. I also ride a bicycle..as much as i can with no hands. You can really feel the balance issue when you stop pedaling. Then if i have to touch the handlebars it's a lightest touch. Super video 👍
Good advice, as always. I will have to work on doing that over the weekend. I have another big ride coming up and I will see if it makes a difference on a guy in his mid 60s.
Great vid!! Motorcycle Guru, Safety Instructor, Long Distance Master, and now Motorcycle Rider Chriopracter, Man of Many Hats😁 I needed those exercises, I get really tense when riding my new Road King (new to me anyways, lol). For some reason my 2007 HD Sportster fit like a glove, but, the extra weight of the Road King intimidated me when I first got on it. So to say I was tense was a understatement. Anyway, you have helped me a lot.......And I've rode for 35 years (smaller bikes mainly, why I don't know, I'm 6ft and 200 pounds) Anyway, God speed and GOD BLESS!!
...my neck feels better already. I sit at a desk for most of the day at work and also ride to work most days. These are great exercises for me. Thanks again brother God Bless.
Great exercises for neck and shoulders. I need to still focus on reducing my hand grip pressure. What do you recommend to help eliminate left forearm cramps left arm mostly on longer rides and frequent clutch use.
You have answered one of my on going problems thanks. I also get cramps in my hips. Any ideas. I’m riding a F6B. It’s comfortable and now with your help more maneuverable. Keep up the good work
Great topic. As a returning rider I find myself way too tight on the motorcycle. I do work on it but it is a conscious effort at this point. Trying to get to the point where it's a subconscious habit. Hopefully these tips help me get closer to that goal.
Thanks Kevin... I needed that. Although the creeks, cracks and crunching that I hear during all that is tough to hear 😋 I actually had to see a chiropractor for my neck at one point when I first got back into riding. Figured it might have had to do with the added helmet weight. Either way, I often take the time to swing my head around a bit when I'm out riding to loosen up a bit. Btw- you might want to call the exercise @8:00 the pigeon neck exercise 😂
2.5 minutes...+10 for the video. ;) Thanks for the exercises! Maybe will help some with my >10 hours/day sitting and staring at a screen. Neck and back hurt every day. (Side-note: I really need to get a super-ergonomic desk chair, but sooo pricey.)
Also, riding with a relaxed upper body and loose arms will help reduce the possibility of a head wobble and a potential resulting tank slapper event, as you won't be transferring the vibrational energy along the length of the bike.
Kevin: THese tips will help make things smoother and stop those aches and pains. Me: Wow, they worked! It is smoother so those aches will go away soon My Body: Ha ha, yeah... no. You still screwed old man.
Yes! To Obi-Wan you listen! If you feel you are coming in too hot to a corner, grip with your knees, point your nose where you want to go. Do not hold on tighter with your hands or you will end up going wide.
I was promised info in two and a half minutes. I want my seven and a half minutes back! 😤😡😠 Lol, but seriously thanks again for all you do, Kevin. I'll give the exercises a shot. Got a cross country ride coming up here pretty soon.
Unfortunately Kevin, squeezing the gas tank doesn't work on a Maxi-Scooter. Also, it isn't a common enough subject that anyone considers. So, it leaves us at a disadvantage.Great video, as always.
Yesterday I was on a 130 mile loop ride in the Ozarks. About 80 miles in I stopped for a break at a Sporting goods store to walk a bit. When I went back to my bike I noticed a puddle of oil under the motor. I checked the dip stick and could not see any oil on it. Bright sunshine, stainless steel dip stick , had just had the oil changed within 100 miles ago. I thought it was low so I stopped at a DG and got a qt. Surely that would get me home. I put in half a qt. Thought I could see it at the bottom of the stick. I took off and within 10 miles smelled something burning. I started pulling a big hill and noticed heavy smoke behind me. I thought I had burned her up. I stopped and noticed oil puking out of the air box. Lots of it. 2 hrs later my recovery team arrived with a trailer. It was hot. I think it just had too much oil. Seems to run okay. I’m glad I didn’t loose a drain plug. 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤷🏼♂️. Now I’m going to start that ride all over again. I’m still learning. Only had her about 5 months.
Dipstick on a motorcycle? Mine has a glass site, though the trick is the bike must be off and level (not on a kickstand) to be accurate. Owner's manual should have the details for your ride.

Just tried it as I'm super tense on the bike since I'm a noob, definitely a relaxing 2.5 minutes! Thanks! 💪💪
This channel has changed my learning so much In the last few weeks ... so much help
Your exercises are the same ones I learned to do after a neck injury
Truer words were never spoken. "Relax" should be the first word in every motorcycle riding lesson.
I was told similar stretching, but hands behind my back to make shoulders and back straight.
I also do back and legs. Has helped all areas of my life.

I was taught similar exercises by a physical therapist and do this regular. I totally can testify that they help.

hey kevin, would you have some arm exercises? i just cant get them relaxed while riding, it seems
Don’t lock your elbows, keep some flex in your arms.
I hold my bars like I hold a newborn. Relax, softly
Also, riding with a relaxed upper body and loose arms will help reduce the possibility of a head wobble and a potential resulting tank slapper event, as you won't be transferring the vibrational energy along the length of the bike.

Kevin - how can i carry these tips on to my Burgman 400 - I do strive to have relaxed shoulders, arms and hands - We can't grip the tank
